Jennie Philips1

F, b. 9 January 1881, d. 11 March 1963
FatherDavid Evan Philips b. 17 Jul 1855, d. 13 Feb 1925
MotherJohanna Ernestina Hecker1 b. 15 Jan 1855, d. 4 Aug 1891
Her first name (forename) Jennie Philips to her death certificate was Jennie. Several variations appear in various records generated during her lifetime. Her original "real" name was probably something like Mary Jennifer or Mary Jeanette.1 She was born on 9 January 1881 at Lopez, Sullivan County, Pennsylvania.1

Jennie Philips (listed as Mary J Phillips) appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of German Township, of Fayette County, Pennsylvania in the household of her father, David Evan Philips, enumerated 22 June 1900. The official date of that census was 01 June 1900. She was listed as age 19, single, born in January 1881 in Pennsylvania. This census is unique (up to that time) in that month and year of birth were requested for each individual, in addition to age at the official census date. Her father and mother were listed as born in Pennsylvania. Her occupation was listed as Housekeeper. She was listed as able to read and write and speak English.2

Jennie Philips married Chauncey George Deffenbaugh, son of Christopher Deffenbaugh and Catherine Johnson, on 12 September 1900.1,3

Chauncey George Deffenbaugh (listed as Chauncey Deffenbaugh) and Jennie Philips (listed as Jennie Deffenbaugh) appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of German Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, enumerated 20 April 1910. The official date of that census was 15 April 1910. The home was listed as owned, not mortgaged, and not on a farm. Chauncey George Deffenbaugh and Jennie Philips were both listed as age 30, both born in Pennsylvania, both married for 9 years, both in first marriage, both able to speak English, and both able to read and write. Chauncey’s occupation was listed as a water well driller (apparently on his own account, self-employed—although the information in that block on the form is messily written). No occupation was listed for Jennie. Jennie Philips was reported to have given birth to four children, only one of whom was still living. All four of their parents were listed as born in Pennsylvania.

Their son, Chauncey Lloyd Deffenbaugh (age 4), was listed as living with them as was Jennie‘s sister, Lela Mae Philips (listed as Lilie Philips, age 24). No one in the household was listed as a veteran of the Union or Confederate Army or Navy. No severe vision, hearing, or speaking disabilities were listed.4

Chauncey George Deffenbaugh (listed as Chauncey G Deffenbaugh( and Jennie Philips (listed as Mary J Deffenbaugh) appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of German Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania at Masontown, enumerated 23 January 1920. The official date of that census was 01 January 1920. The home was listed owned with no mortgage. Chauncey George Deffenbaugh and Jennie Philips were listed as ages 39 and 38, both born in Pennsylvania, both married, both able to speak English, and both able to read and write. Chauncey’s occupation was listed as a retail merchant (hardware) and as an employer of others. No occupation was listed for Jennie. The fathers and mothers of both were listed as born in Pennsylvania.

Their children, Chauncey Lloyd Deffenbaugh, Juanita K Deffenbaugh and Mabel E Deffenbaugh (ages 14, 9, and 1) were listed as living with them, along with Teresa Shultz (age 19), listed as a servant. All of the members of the household age 10 and over were listed as being able to read and write. The two older children were listed as attending school after September 1, 1919.5

Chauncey George Deffenbaugh (listed as Chauncey G Deffenbaugh) and Jennie Philips (listed as Jennie M Deffenbaugh) appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of German Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, enumerated 11 April 1930. The official date of that census was 02 April 1930. The home was listed as rented for $32/month and not on a farm. A radio was present in the home. No street address number is listed for the residence, but it is stated to be on Leckrone Road, which runs roughly north northeast from Masontown, with the residences apparently listed in that order they were encountered by the census enumerator as he traveled away from the Masontown Borough limit. Leckrone Road is (according to MapQuest) called Leckrone-Masontown Road in June 2020 (and is apparently County Road 3013); it goes from Masontown to the unincorporated community of Leckrone, which is about 1.3 miles from Masontown.

The ages of Chauncey and Jennie were listed as 50 and 49, respectively, both born in Pennsylvania, ages at first marriage were 21 and 20, respectively, both did not attend school the previous year. His father and mother were both listed as born in Pennsylvania. Her father and mother were listed as born in Wales and Pennsylvania, respectively. This birth location for her father differs from what she had listed for him in most prior censuses. Chauncey’s occupation was listed as Merchant (hardware), apparently self-employed. No occupation is listed for Jennie.

Their children, Chauncey Lloyd Deffenbaugh, Juanita K Deffenbaugh and Mabel E Deffenbaugh (ages 24, 19, and 11), were listed as living with them. All members of the household were listed as being able to read and write. All of the children were listed as attending school after September 1, 1929. No one was listed as a military veteran.6

Chauncey George Deffenbaugh (listed as Chauncey G Deffenbaugh) and Jennie Philips (listed as Jennie Deffenbaugh) appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Uniontown, Fayette County, Pennsylvania on Coolspring Street, enumerated 16 April 1940. The home was listed as rented for $35 per month and not on a farm. The official date of that census was 01 April 1940. Their daughter, Mabel E Deffenbaugh (age 21) was listed as living with them All household members were listed having lived in the same house on 1 Apr 1935. Chauncey George Deffenbaugh and Jennie Philips were both listed as age 49, both not attending school in March 1940, Chauncey having completed 8 years of schooling and Jennie having completed 6 years of schooling. Both were listed as born in Pennsylvania.

Chauncey was listed as employed, not seeking work, and had worked 25 hours the week of 24-30 March. His occupation was listed as a paperhanger in the interior repair business (self-employed, apparently). He worked 25 weeks in 1939, had no wage income, and had other income (other than wages and salary) in excess of $50. Jennie is listed as doing housework, not employed for wages, and not seeking such employment the week of 24-30 March. No 1939 wage income was reported for her and she did not have non-wage income in excess of $50 in 1939. The population schedule indicates that a farm schedule was not filed for this household. One wonders if the change from home ownership (in the 1920 census) to renter (in the 1930 and 1940 censuses) and the change from hardware store owner (in the 1920 and 1930 censuses) to paperhanger (in the 1940 census) were somehow associated with the Great Depression in the US during the 1930s.7

Her brother, John Arthur Philips, listed her (as Mrs C G Deffenbaugh) as someone who would always know his address when her registered under the World War II Selective Service Act on 27 April 1942. The address he listed for her at that time was 170 Coolspring Street, Uniontown, Fayette County, Pennsylvania.8

Jennie Philips died on 11 March 1963 at Hopwood, South Union Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvnia, at age 82. Death was from venticular fibullation.1

Jennie Philips was buried at Greendale Cemetery, Masontown, Fayette County, Pennsylvania. Her death certificate indicates her usual occupation was housewife and her address was R. D. #1, Hopwood, Pennsylvania, at the time of here death. The informant listed on her death certificate was Donald Hawthorne (RD #1, Hopwood, Pennsylvania), possibly a son-in-law or grandson.9,3

Introduction and Background for David Evan Philips and Johanna Ernestina Hecker

This narrative section is for one of two individuals, David Evan Philips and Johanna Ernestina Hecker, who were married to each other for probably 12-or-more years and had several children. However, the records concerning them (at least those that have been located as of June 2020) are fragmentary and confusing, which causes these two individuals to seem mysterious. One of several “mysteries” associated with them is: "Where were they born?" Some sources indicate both were from the US (born in Pennsylvania), while other sources suggest he was born in Wales and she was born in what is now Germany (either what was Prussia or Bavaria at the time of her birth).

Johanna Ernestina Hecker died in 1891, at about age 36, leaving behind several small children (the youngest only 3 or 4 months old). Her death (understandably) created a family crisis, after which some of the children seem to have remained with their father, some lived with another family member, and some were cared for by people who appear to have been unrelated (the children may have been “assigned” to not-family guardians by a court, as “wards”). Some of the children assumed the surnames of the families that raised them, which greatly complicates researching the family. Since some children were separated from others in their family at a young age, they would (understandably) not have known much about their biological parents. This may have contributed to the creation of later records containing inconsistent information about David Evan Philips and Johanna Ernestina Hecker (including where they were born).

The relatively common names of David Evan Philips and his parents (especially in Eastern Pennsylvania, where he first appears in public records) is another factor in making this family difficult to research. There appear to have been several people with similar names, and of a similar age, living within a few-county coal-mining region. One would think Johanna Ernestina Hecker is a relatively rare name, making her relatively easy to trace, but that has (thus far, as of June 2020) not proved to be true.

Among the many things that are uncertain are (1) if the parents of David Evan Philips ever immigrated to the United States (and, if they did, where did they reside) and (2) the identity of the biological parents of Johanna Ernestina Hecker.

The individual-person narrative for Johanna Ernestina Hecker lists a woman with a similar name (Johanna Ernestine Hecker) as her adoptive mother, but this is inferred; the older woman might have been her biological mother. In several places in this narrative, the daughter has the term "the younger" attached to her name, while the term "the elder" is attached to the mother's name in order to help distinguish one from the other.

Start of Chronological Narrative for this Individual.

Johanna Ernestina Hecker's forename was listed as Annestena in the 1880 census and as Ernestina on the death certificate of one of her daughters. The primary name used in this narrative for this woman is based on her grave marker. That grave marker calls her "Johann Ernestina Hecker Philips". This narrative takes the first three names from that marker as her maiden name.5,1,2

Johanna Ernestina Hecker was born on 15 January 1855 in Pennsylvania.2,5

A girl named Diana Hager appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Perkiomen, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania in the household of a couple listed on the census schedule as Frederick Schreyvogel and Diana Scheyvogel, enumerated 12 June 1860. She was listed as age 5, born in Prussia. She did not attend school within a year prior to the official census date. (In this census, the question about the ability to read and write applied only to persons aged 20 and over.) This girl might be Johanna Ernestina Hecker (the younger). This Frederick Schreyvogel and Diana Scheyvogel household is the one that has been found, to date (20 June 2020), in the 1860 census that seems most likely to have contained Johanna Ernestine Hecker (the elder, her apperently adoptive mother, listed using her married surname at that time) and Johanna Ernestina Hecker (the subject of this narratiive, possibly listed under perhaps a childhood nickname?). The narrative for Johanna Ernestine Hecker provides additional infomation for why this "Diana" might be Johanna Ernestina Hecker (the younger).6

A girl listed as Ann Steenhacker appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Cherry Township, Sullivan County, Pennsylvania in the household of Fredrich Schreivogel and Johanna Ernestine Hecker, at Dushore. She was listed as age 15, born in Pennsylvania, and her occupation was listed as Domestic Servant. Both of her parents were listed as of foreign birth. She did not attend school within a year prior to the official census date. She was listed as able to read and write. No disabilities or other special situations were listed for her.

The person the compiler (CCF) expected to see in this household, but who does not seem to be present, is Johanna Ernestina Hecker (the younger), the apparent daughter of Johanna Ernestine Hecker (the elder). There is a possibility that Anne Steenhacker (the younger) and Johanna Ernestina Hecker are the same person, as they are about the same age and the birth location of the younge Johanna Ernestina Hecker is listed as Pennsylvania in some source documents. In addition, there is considerable similarity between their names (for example: compare “Ann Steenhacker” and “Johanna Ernestina Hecker”). The 1870 US Census was the last one in which census takers did not record family relationships (such as wife, son, grand-daughter, mother-in-law) between the head of the household and other members of the household.

The next family on this 1870 census sheet is headed by an 39-year-old Immigrant from Prussia named Charles Steenhacker. That household contains (in addition to a 39-year-old Prussian-immigrant presumed wife) two sons, ages 10 and 11 (both born in Pennsylvania). Thus, it possible that Anne Steenhacker could be a daughter from this nearby household who was working as a live-in domestic servant at the Scheyvogle hotel. However, it is also possible that the census enumerator (named something like T A Dent) somehow became confused and erroneously “renamed” Johanna Ernestina Hecker (the younger) to Anne Steenhacker, if so, they are the same individual.

One can envision possible confusion of this type, if the census enumerator initially took “rough notes” in the field, which were later recopied so that neater, more legible records could be submitted to the federal government. For now, in this narrative, CCF presumes they are different people. “Conveniently” assuming census takers made multiple errors is “too easy.” With enough (assumed) errors, a family history researcher can convince himself that any person is “really” any other person. Thus, for now, Johanna Ernestina Hecker (the younger) is considered missing in the 1870 US census.

One other possibility that has been considered is that Johanna Ernestina Hecker (the younger) was married at the time of the 1870 census (and thus could appear somewhere in the census under a different surname). However, no Pennsylvania marriage record has yet been found for any marriage involving a person with a name similar to Johanna Ernestina Hecker (either before or after the time of the 1870 census – including any record of the presumed marriage, at some point, to David E Philips-- see below). In addition, several searches using Ancestry did not yield any obvious candidates to be a married version of Johanna Ernestina Hecker (the younger) in the 1870 census. Information available on Ancestry for Sullivan County Pennsylvania marriages includes surprisingly few marriages prior to around 1900, so records could be incomlete.4

Johanna Ernestina Hecker married David Evan Philips, son of John Philips and Mary (--?--).7

David Evan Philips (listed as David Phillips) and Johanna Ernestina Hecker (listed as Annestena Phillips) appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Cherry Township, Sullivan County, Pennsylvania, enumerated 28 June 1880. The official date of that census was 01 June 1870. David’s age was listed as 26. Johanna’s age was listed as 24. They were both listed as having been born in Pennsylvania and as being husband and wife. The two adults in the household were listed as being able to read and write. David’s occupation was listed as Miner. Johanna’s occupation was listed as keeping house. His parents were both listed as born in Pennsylvania. Her parents were both listed as born in Bavaria. Their daughter, Anne Philips (age 6 months, born January 1880), was listed as living with them. No one was listed as attending school. The two parents were listed as being able to read and write. In the census, the surname for all members of the family is spelled with two “L’s”.5

Johanna Ernestina Hecker died on 4 August 1891 at age 36. She left behind 6 young children. The age of each child and where each appears on some later censuses (that is, who is caring forthem following their mother's death) are described in the Notes and Observatons Section, below.2

Johanna Ernestina Hecker was buried at Old Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Dushore, Sullivan County, Pennsylvania. The grave marker indicates she is the wife of David Philips. The marker also indicates it was erected by Mrs John Seemann, which was her (possibly adoptive) mother's married name at this time (that is, Seemann was the name of the mother's most recent deceased husband at that time).2

Notes and Observations:

The research on the family history of David Evan Philips and Johanna Ernestina Hecker (and their descendants) has been complicated by the family seeming to “shatter” following the death of Johanna Ernestina Hecker in August 1891 (probably in Sullivan County in Eastern Pennsylvania). The following table attempts to provide a brief summary of “what happened” to their children (to the limited extent that it is known in June 2020) by listing (1) their birth dates, (2) their ages at the time of their mother's death, and (3) their locations at the time of the 1900 census, and (4) providing certain additional information in the Comments column.

Her grandmother died 28 Dec 1901. She might have had some type of not-yet-located “ward” relationship for a time after her grandmother’s death, similar to her younger brother Arthur (see Comment below). At time of 1910 census, she lived in household of her then-married sister Jennie in German Township, Fayette County PA (using Philips as her surname on that census). She appears to have sometimes used Seeman as surname until her marriage in 1913. Two children reached adulthood.

Additional Comments on Above Table:

1. German Township is in Southwest Pennsylvania.

2. Jefferson County is in Western Pennsylvania, somewhat northeast of the Pittsburgh area, and almost due north of Fayette County.

3. The elder Ernestine (Seeman was her married surname after about 1875) is listed as (maternal) grandmother in this table. Some evidence suggests she might have been an adoptive parent to the younger Ernestina (Johanna Ernestina Hecker), not a biological parent. “Seeman” is the spelling of the surname used in the 1901 census and also the spelling that shows up in later records (after the grandmother’s death) relating to Lela and Arthur. However, the original “Germanic” spelling seems to have more likely been “Seemann”. The younger Ernestina apparently never used Seeman (or Seemann) as a surname, at least not in the few records that have been found for her.

4. Family folklore is that Lela Mae Philips was unable to get married until some type of financial obligation had been satisfied. This might be somehow connected with debts stemming from a ward-type relationship (similar to the relationships her two younger brothers had), if she was placed in a relationship of that type following the death of her grandmother in 1891.

5. There is a lot of variation in how “Philip” and “Philips” are spelled in various records. Sometimes one “L” used and other times two “L’s”are used in the names.

6. David E Philips had one known child (a daughter) by a later wife (not listed in the above table). She had one known child who reached adulthood.

The two older children were listed as attending school after September 1, 1919.7

No one was listed as a military veteran.8

One wonders if the change from home ownership (in the 1920 census) to renter (in the 1930 and 1940 censuses) and the change from hardware store owner (in the 1920 and 1930 censuses) to paperhanger (in the 1940 census) were somehow associated with the Great Depression in the US during the 1930s.9

Chauncey George Deffenbaugh died on 21 March 1952 at 1 Lucile Avenue, Homewood Terrace, North Union Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, at age 71.3,10

Chauncey George Deffenbaugh was buried at Greendale (Mennonite) Cemetery, German Township (near Masontown), Fayette County, Pennsylvania. Death certificate indicates cause of death was coronary thrombosis, with arteriosclerotic heart disease as a contribuing factor. He died at home. His normal occupation at the time of his death (or closest to the time of his death) was paint contractor. His social security number was 169-05-6230. The informant was Mrs Mabel Botts of Uniontown PA (daughter?). Greendale Cemetery is referred to as "Mennonite Cemetery" on his death certificate.1,3

Miles Baldwin1

M, b. May 1857, d. 27 September 1912
FatherMiles Baldwin1 b. 11 Jan 1826, d. 19 Nov 1887
MotherRachel Clark1
Miles Baldwin was born in May 1857 at Bridgeport, Connecticut.1

Miles Baldwin died on 27 September 1912 at Clinton Township, Douglas County, Missouri, at age 55.1 He was buried at Mount Ararat Cemetery, Douglas County, Missouri. His death certificate indicates he died of kidney trouble (Bright's disease). His occupation was listed as farmer and his marital status as widowed. The informant on the death certificate was listed as John Baldwin, possibly a son.1

Notes and Observatons: As of 11 July 2021, this individual is quite problematic. The only real information about him is from a Missouri death certiicate where John Baldwin was the informant. John however, seems to have been the son of Wallace Baldwin (born 1849)-- and Wallace was living with him at the time of the 1910 census (and for whom CCF has not found a death certificate). Things would seem to fit together better iif Miles and Wallace were the same indiidual -- or if this 1857 Miles was known by some other name for much of his life, At this time, CCF has Wallace's year of birth as 1849. However, an 1847 birth can be inferred from some earlier census returns (such as the 1850 census). Thus, incorrect placement of a digit in a birth year (1857 instead of 1847) is not impossible. However, CCF is reluctant to assume two errors (name and birth year) in the same document (the death certificate). In addition, the 1912 death certificate for this "1857" Miles Baldwin has his wife's name listed as Rachel Clark as his mother's maiden name. The name of the wife of the Miiles born in 1826 seems to have been Julia Clark. The death certificate indiicates "Miles" was a widower. This runs counter to theory that "Miiles" was really "Wallace," since Wallaces wife, Lousie Pierce, survived him and was recorded in the 1920 census.

There is a Find-a-Grave memorial for Miles Baldwin, in a Douglas County Missouri Cemetery. However, that entry seems to have been based on the death certificate, NOT an actual cemetery (graveyard) survey (walkdown).

Added later (8/16/2021):

The 1912 death certificate for this “Miles Baldwin” indicated he was buried in Mt Ararat Cemetery in Douglas County Missouri. The compiler of this narrative-biography (CCF) had hoped that the transcribed “readings” of the names and other information on grave makers in that cemetery would indicate one or the other of these individuals (Miles or Wallace) had been interred there that year. However, that was not the case, as described below.

CCF obtained a copy of the 2020 edition of the “cemetery book” published by the Douglas County Missouri Historical Society. It turns out that neither name (Miles Baldwin or Wallace Baldwin) is listed as buried in that cemetery (in 1912 or any other year).

Three Baldwin graves do exist in a cluster in Row 36 of that cemetery: Sara J (died 1910), Elmer L (died 1903), and Gladys (died 1897) – the last two were young children. The “cemetery book” indicates six other “blank” markers exist in that row: four “fieldstones” and two unengraved concrete markers. Thus, it is possible that “Miles” or “Wallace” is buried at one of those blank marker locations (or both are, assuming they are indeed two different people).

Some “rows” in this cemetery tend to meander. The cemetery does not seem to have been surveyed with burial plots laid out well in advance. CCF is not aware that groups of burial plots were ever sold to families in that cemetery, but (however it was done) groups of family members do seem to be buried together. Examples are the Browns in Row 26 and the Hafners in Row 28.
The “rows” and “row numbers” in the “cemetery book” were apparently “deduced” by the people who “read” the cemetery for this Douglas County Historical Society Publication (or possibly one or more earlier publications listing grave marker “readings” for this cemetery).
There is a grave marker in the Mt Ararat Cemetery marked with the initials “M. B.” (with no full name and no dates engraved on it). It is in Row 30. It is near (possibly adjacent to) grave markers for three members of the Bowen family (and might have originally been a “foot marker” for either Malisee Bowen or Merdon Bowen). All three members of the Bowen family members interred in Row 30 died between April and July 1900).1,2

Drewey William Smith was born on 1 October 1846 in Butler County, Missouri. Late in his life, he maintained that his birth year was 1844. However, the Civil War pension office came to believe he had actually been born in 1846.2,4,5,6

His residence was Phelps County, Missouri, between 1865 and 1866.7

Drewey William Smith enrolled in Company M of the 13th Missouri Volunteer Cavalry (Union side) on 11 March 1865 as a private at St James, Phelps County, Missouri. This unit was also known as Captain Fred W. Becker’s Company. Personal information relating to him at about the time of his enrollment (enlistment) included: age: 18; complexion: dark; eye color: dark; born: Butler County, Missouri; and occupation: farmer.8

A standard reference book provides the following brief history of ths regiment:

Regiment lost during service 11 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 28 Enlisted men by disease. Total 39.

Note that the list of duty locations and engagements given above begins prior to Smith's enlistment and end after his discharge.

Drewey William Smith was honorably discharged from the US army at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, on 11 January 1866. He may have reached the grade of corporal.9,10,11

He lived in Douglas County, Missouri, between 1866 and 1869.7

Drewey William Smith married Emily Jane Fields, daughter of William Charles Fields and Eira Keziah Jarman, on 11 October 1868 in Douglas County, Missouri. The marriage was performed by J. H. Pierce, Justice of the Peace.1,2,4

He lived in Saline County, Missouri, between 1869 and 1970.7

Drewey William Smith and Emily Jane Fields appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Wood and Richland Townships, Texas County, Missouri at Houston (Post Office), enumerated July 1870. The household was listed as having real estate valued at $200 and personal property valued at $100. The official date of that census was 01 June 1870. Their son James W Smith was listed as living with them. Drewey William Smith and Emily Jane Fields were listed as ages 23 and 17, respectively, born in Missouri and Tennessee, respectively, both married, both could read and write and neither attended school. Drewey's occupation was listed as farmer. Emily's occupation was listed as housekeeper. Emily's parents were apparently listed as the immediately preceding household on this census. Drewey's parents were apparently listed as the immediately following household.1

He lived in the vicinity of Springfield, Greene County, Missouri, from 1870 until the 1920s.7

Drewey William Smith applied for (or, in the language of the era, declared for) a pension based on his 10 months of military service during the US Civil War and a weakened physical condition, including “general debility,” which reduced his ability to support himself by manual labor. The application form was filled out at Springfield, Greene County, Missouri, on 12 July 1890. Thomas Dodson (listed as Thomas Dadson) and William Charles Fields (listed as W C Fields) certified his identity as part of the initial application. Both Smith and Dodson were sons-in-law of Fields.12

A medical examination related to his Civil War pension on 2 April 1891 lists his height as 5 ft 11 in and his weight as 160 pounds.13

Drewey William Smith requested an increased pension on 22 November 1892. Christopher C. Dodson (listed as C C Dodson) and G H Bradley confirmed his identity for this pension increase request (or declaration). C C Dodson was a nephew by marriage. Over the years, Smith requested pension increases many times (and was granted several). Most of these subsequent pension increase requests are not listed in this narrative.

The basic pension law changed from time to time over the course of the almost four decades that Smith drew a Civil War pension. At certain times (i.e., when certain versions of the basic pension law were in effect), veterans could receive pensions only if they had physical ailments which limited their ability to work (the amount of their pension was apparently based, in part, on the extent of their physical limitations – and possibly on whether the limitation was somehow connected to their military service). The file kept on Smith at the pension office (which is now a record open to the public in the US National Archives) contains several instances where Smith requested a higher pension based on various physical complaints. These requests generally caused him to undergo a medical examination. The written reports from these medical examinations are also contained in “his” file at the National Archives.

Similarly, at some times, the amount of a pension that was received depended on the veteran’s age, with the older pensioners receiving higher monthly pensions. There was apparently some uncertainty as to Smith’s year of birth. The pension office file at the National Archives contains several documents related to that issue.14

A medical examination related to his Civil War pension on 2 March 1898 lists his height as 6 ft and his weight as 158 pounds.15

Drewey William Smith and Emily Jane Fields appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Jackson Township, Greene County, Missouri, enumerated 21 June 1900. The home was owned with a mortgage and was on a farm. An agricultural census schedule was filed for this household. The official date of that census was 01 June 1900. This census is unique in that month and year of birth were requested for each individual, in addition to age at the official census date. Their children Margaret Smith, Jessie Columbus Smith, Ellen J Smith and Florence Millie Smith were listed as living with them, Drewey William Smith was listed as age 55 born in Missouri, married 31 years, and employed as a farmer (both his parents were listed as born in Tennessee). Emily Jane Fields was listed as age 47, born in Tennessee, and married 31 years (both her parents were listed as born in Tennessee, which is probably incorrect -- both are believed to have been born in North Carolina). She reported giving birth to 10 children, 7 of whom were still living. All members of the household age 10 and over could read, write, and speak English. No members of the household attended school within the past year. Millie I Smith is listed in the census as a daughter. In this compilation "Millie" is assumed to be an alternative name for Florence. However, it is possible "Millie" is actually a granddaughter approximately the same age as Florence. A son, Adam Smith, lived with his wife on the next household listed in this census schedule page. A note on the census schedule page appears to indicate these households were in the southern portion of Jackson Township.5

A medical examination related to his Civil War pension on 22 January 1902 lists his height as 6 ft and his weight as 150 pounds.16

A medical examination related to his Civil War pension on 18 May 1904 lists his height as 5 ft 11 in and his weight as 138 pounds.17

A medical examination related to his Civil War pension on 26 February 1906 lists his height as 5 ft 11.5 inches and his weight as 136 pounds.18

His Civil War army pension was increased to a rate of $12 per month on 12 December 1908, with the effective date of the increase apparently being retroactive to 14 Nov 1908.19 Drewey William Smith lived circa 1908 at Fairgrove, Missouri.20

Drewey William Smith and Emily Jane Fields appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Springfield, North Campbell Township, Greene County, Missouri at Grant Street, enumerated 20 April 1910. The home was listed as owned, mortgaged, and was not on a farm. The official date of that census was 15 April 1910. Their children Jessie Columbus Smith and Florence Millie Smith were listed as living with them. Drewey William Smith (listed in this census as William Smith) and Emily Jane Fields (listed in this census as Emley Smith) were listed as ages 64 and 57, respectively, born in Missouri and Tennessee, respectively, both married for 42 years, both in first marriage, and both able to read, write, and speak English. Drewey was listed as being retired. No occupation was listed for Emily. Emily Jane Fields was reported to have given birth to 10 children, 7 of whom were still living.21

His Civil War army pension was increased to a rate of $13.50 per month on 25 October 1912, with the effective date of the increase apparently being retroactive to 22 May 1912.22

His Civil War army pension appears to have been increased to a rate of $15.50 per month on 1 April 1915. The pension office document for this date is especially confusing because it seems to indicate the increase may have been retroactive to 1 Oct 1912 (to a date even earlier than the previous increase, which was to a lower rate, $13.50 per month). This 1915 increase was made around the time where the file contains a good bit of documentation concerning the actual year of his birth (he maintained it was 1844, but the pension office had some evidence he was younger and tended to believe he had been born in 1846). It is possible that the 1 Oct 1912 start date for a $15.50 rate is what would have been in effect if he has been born in 1844 (in which case, if they treated him as born in 1846, the retroactive start date for $15.50 was probably 1 Oct 1914).23

His Civil War army pension was apparently increased to a rate of $30.00 per month on 10 June 1918.23

His Civil War army pension was apparently increased to a rate of $32.00 per month on 1 October 1918.23

Drewey William Smith and Emily Jane Fields appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of North Campbell Township, Greene County, Missouri at Springfield, enumerated 8 January 1920. The home was listed as owned and mortgaged, and not on a farm. The official date of that census was 01 January 1920. A roomer, Henry C Wood, was also listed as living in the household. Drewey William Smith (listed as "Drury") and Emily Jane Fields (listed as "Emily J") were listed as ages 74 and 67, respectively, born in Missouri, and Tennessee, respectively, both married, and both able to read and write and to speak English. Occupation was listed as "None" for each of them.24

Drewey William Smith requested an increased pension on 19 May 1921 under the (then-relatively-new) May 1920 pension act. Daniel M Smith (a son, of RR 1, Springfield, Missouri) and Martha Smith, (as Martha Fields, a married daughter, of Cherryvale, Kansas) confirmed his identity for this pension increase request (or declaration). Drewry Smith’s address was listed as General Delivery, Springfield, Missouri, at this time.25

On 20 May 1921 and again on 7 Oct 1922, Emily Jane Fields submitted affidavits providing information about her husband's declining health in support of his efforts to obtain an increased pension. In the first of these, she lists her address as RR1, Box 609, Springfield, Missouri.26

His Civil War army pension was apparently increased to a rate of $72.00 per month on 21 July 1921.27

At some point, possibly as early as 1922, Drewey William Smith moved to Cherryvale, Kansas. His wife, Emily Jane Fields died on 19 Jan 1924, and is buried there. It is likely that they moved to Cherryvale, Kansas, together, ending their residence in Springfield. However, this is speculation. As this is written (July 2016), little is known about their place of abode during that time period. Cherryvale, Kansas, was apparently the residence of their daughter Martha at this time.28

Drewey William Smith married Jennie Clotfelter between 1924 and 1926 in Kansas.29

Drewey William Smith married Adelphia (--?--) between 1924 and 1928 probably in Kansas.30

Drewey William Smith died on 11 October 1928 at Iola, Allen County, Kansas, at age 82.2,11,29 He was buried at Fairview Cemetery, Cherryvale, Montgomery County, Kansas. The headstone for his grave was furnished by the US War Department for his military service during the US Civil War (union side) as a corporal in the 13th Missouri Cavalry. The headstone was shipped on 19 Mar 1931.

At the time of his death, he was receiving his pension checks at 217 S 1st St, Iola, Kansas. It is not known when his address changed from Cherryvale, Kansas to Iola, Kansas. The two towns are about 50 miles apart. Cherryvale is approximately 140 miles northwest of Springfield, Missouri. The obituary indicates his funeral was held on 12 Oct 1928, with Rev. J. F. Wilson, pastor of the First Baptist Church, in charge. Funeral was at the home of Mr and Mrs Elmer Fields, his grandchildren, 800 West Main Street, Cherryvale. Pallbearers were Paul Carl, Ralph Blades, Jack Rogers, Walter Heins, James Tolan, and W. H. Hite. Music was sung by "Mrs. J. F. Wilson, Mrs J. P. Clemens, and Miss Mildred Clemens, as accompanist" (the group is referred to as a quartet, but only three names are listed). In charge of flowers were Mrs High Hill, Mrs Frank Plunkett, Mrs F J Straub, and Mrs Grant Helm.

At the time of his death, he was a member of the Hackleman Post of the Grand Army of the Republic (G. A. R.), No. 142. Members of that post and the Daughters of Union Veterans conducted graveside ceremonies (members of both organizations also attended the funeral -- the G. A. R. members would have been fellow veterans of the Union Army).

He was survived by three living children: Mrs. Herbert Miller, Coyville, Kansas; A. C. Smith, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and J.C. Smith, St. Louis, Missouri.2,11,29

In March 1929, Drewey William Smith’s apparent widow, Adelphia (--?--) applied for a payment from the pension office. What she received appears to have been only the amount of his pension that accrued between the time of the last payment that he received and the time of his death. There is very little in the file concerning Adelphia (--?--). She does not appear to have received (or applied for) a continuing regular monthly payment based on Drewey William Smith’s army service (and may not have been eligible for one, following a relatively short marriage entered into late in his life). But, she does seem to have resumed receiving a Civil War widow's pension based on the service of her first husband. Her address was listed as 217 So. First Street, Iola, Kansas.31

This family has an oddity that might be due to one person having two different grave markers, which resulted in two different Find-a-Grave memorials being generated for one person (with non-identical information on them). In particular, the family appears to include two individuals who seem to be brothers (perhaps twins) who died as infants. They are Leon (listed as born 26 Jan 1833, died 6 Feb 1933) and Ceon (born 1 Jan 1933, died 20 Sept 1933) -- these dates are from their Find-a-Grave memorials (the 20 Sept 1933 date is from a photograph of a grave maker on the Find-a-Grave page, the date -- the text -- on the actual memorial, i.e., on the web page, is 29 Sept, but that is probably a typo).

Each of these two Find-a-Grave memorials has a grave marker photograph, and the two photos are different. The one for "Leon" is older (clearly more weathered, based on photos appearing on the site in 2014) and has only a single date on it: 1933. The one for "Ceon" is newer. It is possible that (1) both of these grave markers are for one individual and (2) at some point a newer grave marker was added (but the older one was not removed) and errors were made on the newer marker.

Since there are other possible explanations (many of which involve certain combinations of errors), both names have been inlcuded in this compilation (as of July 2014). This is an area that needs additional research (but that is not considered a high priority by CCF, as of July 2014).5,6,1,2

This is an area that needs additional research (but that is not considered a high priority by CCF, as of July 2014).2,1,3,4
