Blanche Jonkler was also known as Blanche Jenkler in at least one source document.4 She was born circa 1901 in New York (an alternative source indicates she was born in 1891 in Plainfield, New Jersey).4

Blanche Jonkler married Jacob Slobodien, son of Joseph Slobodien and Fannie Ziegelnietski, circa 1921.5,6,2,3,7

Between c1927 and c1935 Blanche Jonkler lived at 109 Market Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey, (at-home spouses were not listed in earlier Perth Amboy city directories; she likely began living at this address earlier than 1927).

Blanche Jonkler and Jacob Slobodien appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of at Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey at 109 Market Street, enumerated 2 April 1930. Their ages were listed as 35 and 29, respectively, born in New Jersey and New York, respectively, both married, ages at first marriage were 26 and 20, respectively, both did not attend school the previous year, and both could read, write, and speak English. The home was listed as owned, valued at $11,000, and not on a farm. A radio was listed as being present in the home. The official date of that census was 02 April 1930. Their children Adele J Slobodien and Ira Sheldon Slobodien were listed as living with them, along with Blanche Jonkler's's mother, Lena (--?--), (listed as Lena Jenkler), and a servant Lena (--?--). Jacob was listed as employed as the proprietor of a shoe store (working for his own account) and as a veteran of the World War (what was later called World War I). No occupation was listed for Blanche. Jacob’s uncle, Morris Slobodien, and several members of his family lived next door (Household 5 on the same census schedule page). The home was one unit of a two-family home. Since Jacob was listed as an owner, and his uncle’s household was listed a renter, Jacob was probably his uncle’s family’s landlord.8

Blanche Jonkler and Jacob Slobodien appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Nachez, Adams County, Mississippi at 621 Washington Street, enumerated 13 April 1940.The home was listed rented for $20 per month and not on a farm. It appears to have been a two-family home. The official date of that census was 01 April 1940. Their children Adele J Slobodien and Ira Sheldon Slobodien were listed as living with them. The suname for the members of this family was recorded as Stabodion in this census. All members of the household except Blanche were listed as having lived in Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey on 1 Apr 1935. Blanche was listed as having lived in New York on that date. Jacob was listed as age 44, married, born in New Jersey, not attending school in March 1940, and having completed one year of college. Blanche was listed as age 38, married, born in New York, not attending school in March 1940, and having completed 2 years of high school. Jacob was listed as employed, not seeking work, but with no entry recorded for the number of hours worked during the week of 24-30 March. His occupation was listed as a supervisor in a tire plant as a private industry worker. He reported 52 weeks worked in 1939, $2340 wage income, and no other income (other than wages and salary) in excess of $50. Blanche was listed as employed, not seeking work, and having worked 48 hours worked during the week of 24-30 March. Her occupation was listed as a saleslady in a department store as a private industry worker. She reported 12 weeks worked in 1939, wage income of $130, and no other income (other than wages and salary) in excess of $50. The population schedule indicates a farm schedule was not filed for this household.9

Blanche Jonkler lived for a time in New Orleans, Lousiana.3

Blanche Jonkler died on 27 December 1967 at New Jersey.3,10 At the time of her death, she lived at 630 West 7th Street, Plainfield, New Jersey.3 She was buried at Mount Lebanon Cemetery, Long Island, New York, (one source gives the location of Mount Lebabon Cemetery as Glendale, Queens, New York).3,10

Jurdine Blankenship's forename has been spelled various ways, including Jardiene, Gearldine, and (apparetly almost exclusively by her between approximately 1942 and the end of her life, Jurldyne).3,4,5,2 She was born on 23 August 1923 in Arkansas. One source on Ancestry.com gives the location of her birth as "Pindell Boon" (this same source lists the year of her birth as 1922). An Ancestry user has annotated this location to indicate it is in Stone County, Arkansas. However, it is possible that "Boon" is intended to signify Boone County, which is in the northern portion of the state, as is Stone County.1,4,5,2

Jurdine Blankenship appeared on the census of 1930 at Okemah, Okfuskee County, Oklahoma.1

Jurdine Blankenship appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Econtuchka Township, Seminole County, Oklahoma in the household of her uncle and aunt, Linus Henry Baldwin and Ida May Fields. The official date of that census was 01 April 1940. She was listed as: age 18, single, attended school during March 1940, had completed two years of high school, born in Arkansas, and lived in the same house on 1 Apr 1935.6

Jurdine Blankenship married E.A. Barnard.7

Jurdine Blankenship died on 13 September 1977 (at 11:10 PM) at Dominican Santa Cruz Hospital, 1555 Soquel Dr., Santa Cruz County, California, at age 54. She died of massive acute hemolytic anemia, due to portal cirrhosis and acute liver failure. Her remains were cremated. Her occupation was housewife and her usual residence was 2546 Capitola Road, Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz County, California. She had lived in California for 17 years at the time of her death.4,5,7

Her Social Security Number was 441-82-566, issued in Oklahoma, apparently issued prior to 1942, possibly in March 1940 at Oklahoma.5,2,7

There is a record indicating that a Gearldene Blankenship may have married a Nobel Morris in 1946 at Washington County, Arkansas. As of August 2016, this record is believed to refer to someone other than the Gearldine Blankenship of interest here (for reasons outlined in the next paragraph). Both the bride and groom in this 1946 marriage are listed as residing in Soringdale, Washington County, Arkansas. His age is listed as 28 and hers is listed as 21. A previous Washington County marriage is listed for Nobel Morris on 7 Mar 1940 to Lucelie McConaughy (he is listed as age 22 in that earlier marriage, consistent with an age of 28 in 1946). Yet another marriage is listed for a Nobel Morris, on 9 Nov 1946, to a Catherine Holland in Clay County Arkansas, which is on the opposite (eastern) part of the state from Washington County. No age is listed for this other 1946 Nobel Morris marriage (which is likely a different individual).

In 1942, "Geraldine" (using the spelling "Jurldyne") notified the US Social Security Administration that her surname had changed to Barnard. She was apparently still using the name Barnard at the time of her death in California in 1977. Thus it is unlikely that she would have married in Arkansas in 1946 (presumabely changing her name to Morris at that time -- and at that time use a spelling of ther first name that was different from what was used in both 1942 and 1977), and then somehow changed the surname back to Barnard by 1977.8

His military "army enlistment record" is dated 2 October 1942. His enlistment location is given as Little Rock, Arkansas. His residence is listed as Arkansas. He was honorably discharged from the US Army on 9 September 1943 at Camp Chafee, Arkansas. He was serving in the Headquarters Company of the 1850th "SU" (likely Support Unit) at that base at the time of his discharge. His final pay papers also mention he was in the 8th "SC" (possibly something like Service Company). Around that time, Camp Chafee seems to have been a training base for armored divisions (one after another) and also housed prisoners of war (eventually holding around 3000 POWs by the end of the war). It is possible the "Support Unit" had "housekeeping" and/or maintence functions for the post's operations. His army serial number was 38 290 803.9

In 1939 he worked 40 weeks, earned $200, and did not have income in excess of $50 from sources other than wages or salary.6

His military "army enlistment record" is dated 29 August 1942. His enlistment location is given as Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. In his military records (the brief summary available on Ancestry.com), his residence is listed as Howell County, Missouri. He is listed as entering as a private, entering the service from civil life to serve for (essentially) the duration of the war. He is listed as born in 1914 in Arkansas. His education was given as "grammar school", civilian occupation: "Unskilled sawmill occupations", and he was listed as single, with dependents. His height was listed as 69 inches and his weight as 152 pounds. His serial number was 37 382 154. Family folklore is that he was a driver for General MacArthur while he was in the military.

The only WW2-era documentation relating to his service that seems to have survived a major 1973 fire in the St Louis records center are (1) a brief summary of his final pay ($286.63, $50 taken in cash, the rest by check) at discharge on 2 Nov 1945 at the Separation Center at Fort Mac Arthur, California and (2) a later (January 1946) payment by check of savings deposits made while he was in the army ($402.03). The records indicate he was a private, first class, and had arrived in the US from overseas duty on 25 Oct 1945. The record does not seem to identify the unit he served in or where he had arrived from on 25 Oct 1945. The record lists his home address as "Box 203, Sibnger, Calif" (correct name of the town is "Sanger"). The location where he had enlisted or had been inducted given as West Plains, Missouri (with two other Missouri locations crossed out: Willow Springs and Howell). It is likely that his parents had moved from Missouri to California while he was in the military. Interestingly, the travel pay component in his final settlement seems to have based on the mileage between California and Missouri.7,8,9

Ruth May Fields was born on 26 August 1917 in Arkansas, although the 1920 census suggests the year could have been 1918.1,5

Ruth Fields appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Rock Creek Township, Searcy County, Arkansas in the household of her parents, Charles Anson Fields and Zona Collins.3

Ruth May Fields appeared on the census of 1930 at McKinley Township, Douglas County, Missouri.6

Ruth May Fields lived circa 1938 at Willow Springs, Missouri.7

Ruth May Fields married Lee Scott on 25 May 1938, possibly in Howell County, Missouri. The marriage license was issued in Howell County, which is adjacent to Douglas County. One source (based on memories long after the wedding) gives the location as near a community called Possum Trot, probably in south-central Missouri, where Henry C (Bill) Fields had a store and lumber yard. This is almost certainly a different "Possum Trot" than the apparently-better-known former community in Southwest, Missouri, near Springfield.8,2

Ruth May Fields and Lee Scott appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of at Clinton Township, at Douglas County, Missouri, enumerated 22 April 1940. The home was listed as rented for one dollar per month, and on a farm. The official date of that census was 01 April 1940. Their daughter Glenn Scott was listed as living with them, Both adult household members were listed having lived in the same house on 1 Apr 1935 (although they did not marry until 1938). Lee Scott and Ruth May Fields were listed as ages 23 and 22, respectively, both married, born in Colorado and Missouri, respectively, with 8 and 9 years of schooling, respectively, and neither attended school in March 1940. Lee was listed as employed in emergency work (W.P.A), with a period of unemployment listed as 38 weeks. His occupation was listed as laborer on road construction and doing government work. He reported no weeks worked in 1939, no wage income, and no other income (other than wages and salary) in excess of $50. Ruth is listed as doing housework, not employed for wages, and not seeking such employment. No occupation was listed for her. No 1939 wage income was reported for her and she did not have non-wage income in excess of $50 in 1939. The population schedule indicates a farm schedule was not filed for this household.9

Ruth May Fields seems to have married Willard L. King, possibly during the 1950s. They were divorced at the time of Ruth's death in 1983. It is possible the divorce was in November 1980, based on the record of a divorce action ending the marriage of a Ruth M King and a Willard L King in Fresno County, California, at that time.10,7,4,11

Ruth May Fields lived at RR1, Box 64, Summerville, Oregon, at some time, probably in the 1970s.12

Ruth May Fields lived in August 1977 in Oregon.10

Ruth May Fields lived on 29 July 1982 at 222 Morton, Sanger, Fresno County, California.13

Ruth May Fields lived in August 1982 at Sanger, Fresno County, Califronia.14

Ruth May Fields died on 21 July 1983 at 3:10 a. m. At Valley Medical Center, 445 South Cedar Avenue, Fresno, Fresno County, California, at age 65 (it is likely that she was pronounced dead upon arrival at this hospital). She died from cardiopulmonary arrest caused by ovarian cancer which had spread to other organs.1,4,15 She was buried at Sanger Cemetery, Sanger, Fresno County, California. Her death certificate indicates she was divorced at the time of her death. She had lived at 222 Morton Street, Fresno, California and had been employed as a maintenance worker at (probably) Sanger Convalescent Home, a nursing home, for about 3 years. (She had also been mentioned as living in Sanger in the obituary of her brother Marvin J Fields, who died just a few weeks before her.) She was said to have eight grandchildren. As this is written in Dec 2014, it is as yet unclear what the maiden surnames of her daughters were.4

Ruth May Fields's Social Security Number was 549-40-5962, issued in California before 1951 (last residence Sanger, Fresno County, California).1,5

Charles Ivy Fields appeared on the census of 1930 at McKinley Township, Douglas County, Missouri.3 In the 1930 census, Charles Ivy Fields seems to have been listed as Linus Fields, which is the name of a cousin. On 28 October 1900 Philip Levine married Sarah Isenberg, daughter of Lazarus Isenberg and Millie Borovsky. Philip's occupation was listed as merchant.22,28,29,23

Philip Levine was a founding member (circa 1903) of B'nai Zion Camp No. 20, "the first organization in Perth Amboy that supported both education and Zionism. Their first project was a Hebrew school that would teach children the Hebrew language exclusively -- rather than Hebrew translated into Yiddish, as was customary in those days." This school was named the Hebrew Institute of Perth Amboy, located in a former Baptist church on Fayette and Mechanic Streets.30

From between 6 June 1903 and 9 June 1903, Phillip Slobodien, Philip Levine, and A. Beckhoff attended the sixth annual convention of the Federation of American Zionists as delegates from Perth Amboy, New Jersey. This convention was held at Turners Hall, Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, (with Pittsburg apparently spelled without the letter "h" at the end, at that time). Turners is a set of German-ethnic meeting halls that normally include athletic facilities. Many urban areas in the northern US had Turners (or Turner's) Halls around the beginning of the 1900s.31

In 1907 Philip Levine lived at 331 State Street, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.32 Between c1907 and c1918 Philip Levine's occupation was listed as operating a clothing store (initially) at 88 Smith Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey, (between c 1915 and c1917 the address was listed as 90 Smith Street -- possibly indicating an expansion into an adjacent building -- and c1918 the address was listed as 163 Smith Street). The store was most often listed as specializing in "cloaks," but was also (at times) described as a ladies apparel store. Between c1912 and c1914, he was also listed as Secretary-Treasurer of "Philip Levine Co., Dry Goods" (he was listed only as the Secretary c1912) at 90 Smith Street, Perth Amboy (suggesting that he may have continued to own the dry goods store from the from the time of the 1900 census until at least 1914). Adolph M. Wetzendorf (or sometimes Metzendorf) was listed as the president of the Philip Levine Company.

Philip Levine appeared on the census of 1910 at 378 Park Avenue, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.28 He was listed as a merchant, ladies apparal, in the 1910 census.28

Circa 1919 Philip Levine was secretary (corporate officer) of the Perth Amboy Coal and Ice Company at 501 Division Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey. Samuel Polensky was president of this company and and Dr. John E. Polensky was treasurer.34 Between c1919 and c1922 Philip Levine lived at 113 State Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.

Between c1920 and c1923 Philip Levine's occupation was most often listed as corporate secretary of the Raritan Invenstment Company, which appears to have primarily been a real estate and insurance brokeage (but his occupation in association with this business was sometimes described in other ways, such as real estate broker). The offices of this company were located at the Raritan Building, which occupies 171-175 Smith Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.

Philip Levine and Sarah Isenberg appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey at 113 State Street, enumerated 13 January 1920. The home was listed as owned and mortgaged. The official date of that census was 01 January 1920. Their children Esther Levine, Eleanor Levine, Grace Levine and Theodore H Levine were listed as living with them. All members of the household age 11 and over were listed as being able to read and write. All children except Theodore (who was age 1 year) were listed as attending school after September 1, 1919.23 Philip Levine was listed as a broker in the real estate and insurance business (on his own account) in the 1920 census.23

In 1921 Philip Levine listed commerical phonograph sales/export (to Palestine) on a passport application as his purpose for needing the passport. This might have been a for-profit business the Raritan Investment Company was involved in at that time (the passport application listed his occupation as insurance sales). However, this also could have been a subterfuge adopted to faciliate obtaining a visa to enter British Palestine in conjunction with his activity with the Zionist movement. His brother-in-law (his wife's brother), David Isenberg, was in the phonograph business at this time.35

Philip Levine was described as as being of height: 5' 6", with brown hair and blue eyes in 1921.35

On 10 June 1921 Philip Levine arrived back in the United States (New York) aboard the Aquitania from Southampton. Home address listed as Perth Amboy, New Jersey.36

Philip Levine appears in an Isenberg Family photo that is included in the Perth Amboy Jewish History book. The photo was taken circa 1920.37

A relatively large amount of information exists for this individual. Several source documents are slightly inconsistent with respect to his birth date and other details (which is not unexpected). Specific items in three sources appear to contain larger (probably typographical errors): his birth year in the 1900 census and his immigration year in the 1915 New Jersey state census and the 1920 United States federal census.

An essay-type endnote provides additional background information about certain European locations associated with this individual.46

His immigration date is from this document. As of Jan 2017, Carl Fields has been unable to locate him on an ship manifest landing in the United States on or near this date. Several variations of "Philip" and "Levine" were considered (since the family name might have been revised after entering the United States). Also, searches were performed based on the family structure (although it is not know for certain that the family members arrived on the same ship). Several other potential immigration years can be inferred from information entered on other documents, such as the forms used for some censuses. The 1891 date is before the US federal govenment began keeping these records (in 1892, prior to that, they were state or city records). Also, he was naturalized before the federal government took over control of naturalization (in 1906, prior to that, it is doubtful that the immigration date would have been confirmed from records as part of the naturalization process).
