An alternative possiblity for his name is Grish Tsigelnitsky.2 Harry Ziegelneitski was probably born in Lithuania (then part of the Russian Empire). Most members of the immigrant generation seemed to usually refer to all portions of the Russian Empire as simply Russia.1,3

Harry Ziegelneitski lived at (possibly) Lida, Lithuania.2

Harry Ziegelneitski married Doba Rosumski.

Notes and Observations: "Harry Ziegelneitsky" is listed as the name of Moses Segal's father on his (Moses's) death certificate. The name "Harry" sounds suspiciously like it has been "Americanized," but no information suggests this individual ever immigrated to the United States. An alternative candidate for this individual's name is Grish Tsigelnitsky.

This Grish Tsigelnitsky and his wife resided in the city of Lida at one time. Lida is now in Belarus, but was part of Imperial Russia from 1795 until World War I. It was inside Lithuania (or at least inside the empire controlled by Lithuania some years prior to about 1795 -- "Greater Lithuania" was once much larger than the small country bearing that name that exists in 2017)). Since World War I, Lida has been (at times) within Russia, Lithuania, Poland, the USSR, and Belarus.4

Fannie Ziegelnietski entered the United States at New York, New York, on 6 June 1888 together with Joseph Slobodien, Jacob Slobodien and Sadye Slobodien. They traveled (under a surname Ancestry.com transcribed as Stobogen) on board the SS State of Nevada, which was operated by the State line. They had sailed from Glasgow, Scotland. The State of Nevada passenger list indicates: (1) the group traveled as steerage passengers; (2) they planned to settle permanently in the United States; and (3) they had one piece of luggage among them (this may have referred to something like “checked” luggage that traveled in the ship’s hold). Joseph and Jacob both seem to be listed as merchants. They arrived before the US federal government began to control immigration (and opened Ellis Island to facilitate control). Fewer items of information were recorded about each person entering the US under this older system of state (or possibly city) immigration control.

They had left Hamburg, Germany for Scotland (traveling under a surname Ancestry.com transcribed as Slabogen) aboard a ship called Cumberland on 18 May 1888, going to Leith, on the east coast of Scotland (near Edinburgh). Cumberland apparently did not have cabin classes (and may not have had cabins at all; it may have been more like a an overnight or perhaps multiple-night ferry. They probably crossed Scotland by train, but this is not certain. The passenger list (written in German) for the trip outbound from Germany listed their previous residence as “Bobrausk, Russland” and the occupations of Joseph and Jacob as “Händler” (which can mean merchant –- among other related meanings).10

The residence was listed as a home (not a farm) and was rented. The official date of that census was 01 June 1900. This census is unique in that month and year of birth were requested for each individual, in additon to age at the official census date. Their children Sadie Slobodien, John Slobodien, Rose Slobodien, Jacob Slobodien and Albert Leon Slobodien were listed as living with them, as well as the elder Jacob Slobodien, Joseph's brother. Everyone in the household age 11 and over was listed as being able to read, write, and speak English. Sadie/Sadye, John, and Rose were the only members of the household who attended school (for 9 months each). Fannie Ziegelnietski was listed as the mother of eight children, with five of them living as of the date of the census.5

Joseph Slobodien married Fannie Ziegelnietski, daughter of Harry Ziegelneitski and Doba Rosumski, circa 1883 in Russia.27,25,28

Joseph Slobodien was a blacksmith in Russia before entering the US (and possibly worked as a blacksmith for at time after entering the US).29

Joseph Slobodien entered the United States at New York, New York, on 6 June 1888 together with Fannie Ziegelnietski, Jacob Slobodien and Sadye Slobodien. Joseph Slobodien is listed as one of the "newly arrived Jewish men" who "formed the First Perth Amboy Hebrew Mutual Aid Society. This group was a fraternal association that provided varous mutual benefits to its members. Its first meetings were held in the home of Morris Slobodien at 79 Smith Street." This organization apparently evolved into the Shaarey Telfioh congregation, although the congregation seems to have met at private homes for some years until the first building with that name was constructed in 1891.31

Joseph Slobodien appeared on the census of 1895 at 2nd Ward, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.17

Joseph Slobodien owned and operated a shoe store at Perth Amboy, New Jersey, from (at least) the mid-1890s until circa 1922 (his ownership of the store may date from the late 1880s). The store was known as "J. Slobodien and Brother" during much of the time he owned it, but it may have had at least one other name (something like "Reliable Shoes") during a portion of that time. The original "brother" in the name of the store was Joseph's brother, Jacob Slobodien (born circa 1864). Between circa 1910 and circa 1922, the store was located at 143 Smith Street in Perth Amboy. Information from 1905 and 1907 lists the address of the shoe store as 127 Smith Street. The store probably did not actually move in the 1907-1910 time interval, but rather the address change resulted from a modification of the Perth Amboy street numbering system around that time.

Joseph Slobodien was a founding member (circa 1903) of B'nai Zion Camp No. 20, "the first organization in Perth Amboy that supported both education and Zionism. Their first project was a Hebrew school that would teach children the Hebrew language exclusively -- rather than Hebrew translated into Yiddish, as was customary in those days." This school was named the Hebrew Institute of Perth Amboy, located in a former Baptist church on Fayette and Mechanic Streets.34

Reisel Golosoff was also known as Rose.2,3 She was born on 5 August 1848 in Russia.4

Reisel Golosoff married Moshe Leib Segal, son of Harry Ziegelneitski and Doba Rosumski, circa 1867 probably in or near Berdjansk, Russia, (and probably after Moses had immigrated to the Berdjansk region).5,6

Reisel Golosoff entered the United States at New York, New York, on 3 March 1906 as part of an extended family consisting of Moses Segal, Reisel Golosoff, Harry Segal, Hannah Yowell, Constant Segal, Nathan Golosoff, Anna Segal and Jeannette Golosoff. They traveled on board the SS Chemintz, which was operated by the North German (Nord Deutsch) Lloyd line. They had sailed from Bremen, Germany on 17 February 1906. The Chemnitz passenger list indicates: (1) the group traveled as second class passengers; (2) they entered the US with $713 among them; (3) their final destination in the US was Perth Amboy, New Jersey; and (4) they intended to join a relative, Joseph Slobodien, a brother-in-law of Moses Segal, who lived in Perth Amboy, New Jersey.7

Reisel Golosoff appeared on the New Jersey state census of 1915 at Perth Amboy, 3rd Ward, Middlesex County, New Jersey.2

Moses Segal and Reisel Golosoff were apparently missed in the United States census of 1920. Records for her have not yet been located in either the 1920 or 1930 US censuses.

Reisel Golosoff died on 8 October 1930 at 272 Market Street, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey, at age 82.4,8 She lived at 272 Market Street, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey, at the time of her death.4 She was buried on 9 October 1930 at Congrgation Sharri Tefiloh Cemetery, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey. The cemetery may have actually been in Woodbridge Township at the time of her death. Her obituary indicated she was survived by four sons and two daughters, twenty grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.4,8 Her occupation was listed as a housewife at the time of her death.4

Personal recollections of Reisel Golosoff and Moses Segal are described in an end note.9

Rachel Golosoff1

F, b. 15 August 1865, d. 18 October 1942

Rachel Golosoff was also known as Rose. She was born on 15 August 1865 at Russia (the 1915 New Jersey state census gives Aug 1858 as the month and year of her birth; the 1930 census information is consistent with a birth in 1865).2

Rachel Golosoff married Pertiz Slatkoff circa 1888 in Russia (his forename was spelled Perotz on her death certificate).2

Between c1912 and 1920, Rachel Golosoff lived at 212 Hall Avenue, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey. She was listed as operating a dry goods store at this same address in several city directories published during this time period. The living quarters were likely over the store (or possibly behind it).

Rachel Golosoff entered the United States at New York, New York, on 27 August 1912 together with Rachel Golosoff, Sophia Slatkoff, Anna Slatkoff and Samuel Philip Slatkoff (the ship seems to have arrived in New York harbor one day earlier on 26 Aug 1912). They traveled (using the family surname transcribed as Zigalnitsky by ellisland.org and as Zlatkowska and Zlotkowska by Ancestry.com) on board the SS Neckar, which was operated by the North German Lloyd (Nord Deutcher Lloyd) line. They had sailed from Bremen Germany on 15 August 1912. The Neckar passenger list indicates: (1) the group traveled as steerage passengers; (2) they apparently entered the US with $5 among them (or possibly $51, the amount is difficult to read); (3) their “last permanent residence” had been Berdianski (Berdjansk); (4) their final destination in the US was Perth Amboy, New Jersey; and (5) they intended to join a relative, Moshe Leib Segal, Rose’s brother-in-law, who lived at 292 or 293 Hall Avenue (Moses was known as Moshe within the family; his first name is spelled “Moshy” in the response to the “US contact” question on the passenger manifest) and who had also apparently paid for their transatlantic passage. The listed occupation for Rose and Sophia (Yetta on the passenger list) is “seller.” The listed occupation for Sarah is apparently a laborer. The manifest mentions a person named Kaje Faraurnos (or something similar to that) as a contact back in their home country. He is apparently a brother (or possibly a brother-in-law) to Rose (Rose was also known as Rachel). Kaje is listed as living in Taurdia Guberniya, Russia in August 1912, but (as of October 2013) nothing else is known about him.3

Rachel Golosoff was primarily known by her married name, Rachel Slatkoff, after coming to the United States in 1913. Her married surname was spelled several ways, including Slatkow. Her forename was listed as Rose in several source documents.

Rachel Golosoff appeared on the New Jersey state census of 1915 at Perth Amboy, 6th Ward, Middlesex County, New Jersey.4 She was listed as a house-keeper in that 1915 census.4

This individual has not yet been located in the 1920 United States census.5

Between 1920 and 1927 Rachel Golosoff lived at 159 Hall Avenue, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.

Between 1920 and 1926 Rachel Golosoff and Samuel Philip Slatkoff lived at 159 Hall Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.

Rachel Golosoff appeared on the census of 1930 at 474 Hawthone Avenue, Newark, Essex County, New Jersey.6

Between c1940 and c1942 Rachel Golosoff lived at 175 Hall Street, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.2

Rachel Golosoff appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey at 175 Hall Avenue, enumerated 3 April 1940. The home was listed as rented for $2 per month and not on a farm. The official date of that census was 01 April 1940. Her son Saml P Slatkoff was listed as living with her. All household members were listed having lived in the same house on 1 Apr 1935. Rachel Golosoff was listed as ages 76, widowed, not attending school in March 1940, having completed 3 years of schooling, born in Russia, and an alien. Rachel Golosoff was listed as unable to work, not working, and not seeking work the week of 24-30 March. No occupation was listed for her and no 1939 income was reported.7,8

Rachel Golosoff died on 18 October 1942 at 8:45 PM at 175 Hall Avenue, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey, at age 77. She died from a cerebral embolism due to hypertension due to arteriosclerosis. Obituary indicates she died in her home, after a short illness.2,9 She was buried at Congregation Shari Tephalo/Congregation Beth Mordecai Cemeteries on Florida Grove Road, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey. Her obituary indicated she was survived by two sons, two daughters, and four grandchildren (one of her sons apparently never immigrated to the United States -- he was mentioned in her death notice in 1942 as if the members of her family in the United States believed he was living at that time).2

Mendel Golosoff was born on 5 August 1877 possibly at Krasnoselka, Yekaterinoslav Governate, Russia (a region now in Ukraine).1

Mendel Golosoff married Ethel Bruser in 1901.1

Mendel Golosoff entered the United States at New York, New York, on 20 September 1906 together with Ethel Bruser, Soria Golossow, Michel Golossow, Nathan Golosof, Anne Golosoff and Nathan Golosoff (the relationship of Michel and Soria to the others is unknown; their surname might not really have been Golosoff -- or Golossow). They traveled on board the SS Carmania, which was operated by the Cunard line. They had sailed from Liverpool, England on 11 Sept 1906. The Carmania passenger list indicates: (1) the group traveled as steerage passengers; (2) they apparently entered the US with $350 among them (but there is some uncertainty about this – notations on the list suggest that Michael -- or Michel -- may have had other funds); (3) they had lived in Mariupol (Ekaterinoslav Gubernia) prior to leaving Russia; (4) their final destination in the US was Perth Amboy, New Jersey; and (5) they apparently intended to join a relative, Nathan Golosoff, Mendel’s brother, who is identified only as “Brother Segal” on the passenger list (Segal was the Americanized version of Nathan's wife’s maiden surname). Mendel’s occupation is listed as merchant, Michel’s as locksmith, Soria’s as tailoress, Ethel’s apparently as housewife, and the other two are listed as children. Nathan's home address at that time is listed only as “365”; the street name may not have been known or was omitted from the passenger list.2

Mendel Golosoff died on 9 April 1962 at Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, at age 84.1 He was buried at Shaarey Zedek Cemetery, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.1

Nathan Golosoff's name was listed as Nissan Golossoff on the ship manifest when he entered the US.30 He once stated he was born on 23 April 1878 at "Alexandria", Katrinislovsky Governate, Russia, a region that is now (2013) in Ukraine. However, there is some evidence that he may have been born in Grofskoy, a village (shetl) in Katerana Governate (or Gubernia).27

Nathan Golosoff married Anna Segal, daughter of Moses Segal and Reisel Golosoff, circa 1902.24

Nathan Golosoff lived circa 1905 at Alexandrowsk, Russia, a location now within Ukraine. "Alexandrowsk," "Alexandrovsk," and "Alexandria" (which is mentioned above) are probably different spellings of the same name. This is probably the city now called Zaporizhia (which is now a large city, of perhaps 770,000 people, but was a town of a few tens of thousands in the early 1900s). Additional speculation about the identity of this location is in an endnote.31,32

Nathan Golosoff entered the United States at New York, New York, on 3 March 1906 as part of an extended family consisting of Moses Segal, Reisel Golosoff, Harry Segal, Hannah Yowell, Constant Segal, Nathan Golosoff, Anna Segal and Jeannette Golosoff. They traveled on board the SS Chemintz, which was operated by the North German (Nord Deutsch) Lloyd line. They had sailed from Bremen, Germany on 17 February 1906. The Chemnitz passenger list indicates: (1) the group traveled as second class passengers; (2) they entered the US with $713 among them; (3) their final destination in the US was Perth Amboy, New Jersey; and (4) they intended to join a relative, Joseph Slobodien, a brother-in-law of Moses Segal, who lived in Perth Amboy, New Jersey.30 Nathan Golosoff was listed as a merchant on the ship passenger list upon his entry to the United States.30

Nathan Golosoff was implicitly listed on a passanger list as a contact living in the United States when Mendel Golosoff, Ethel Bruser, Soria Golossow, Michel Golossow, Nathan Golosof and Anne Golosoff immigrated to the United States on 20 September 1906. Mendel Golosoff was Nathan's brother.33

Nathan Golosoff completed the initial steps in becoming a naturalized United States citizen circa 1907 at New Brunswick, New Jersey, but never followed through to complete the process.34

Circa 1907 Nathan Golosoff lived at 37 Hall Ave, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey, and operated a dry goods store at the same street address.19

Circa 1910 Nathan Golosoff lived at 207 Hall Avenue, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey, and operated a dry goods store at the same address. The Perth Amboy street address numbering system seems to have changed some time between 1907 and 1910. Thus it is possible that the change from 37 Hall Street to 207 Hall Street may not represent an actual physical location change. The information published in the 1910 city directory may have been collected some time in 1909.20

Nathan Golosoff appeared on the census of 19 April 1910 at Tottenville, Richmond County, New York, which seems to be written as "Tottersville" on on the census form. Tottensville, New York is directly across Arthur Kill from Perth Amboy, New Jersey. There was regular (and quite frequent) ferry service between the two communities at this time (the service continued until around 1963).35 He was listed as a merchant (store) in the 1910 census.28

Between 1914 and 1915 Nathan Golosoff's occupation was listed as operating a dry goods store at 276 Smith Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.

In 1914 Nathan Golosoff lived at 332 Oak Street, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.5 He lived circa 1915 at 180a Broad Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey, (this 1915 city directory information might have been collected some time in 1914).6

Nathan Golosoff appeared on the New Jersey State census of 1915 at 174 Broad Street (Ward 3), Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.17 He was listed as a dry goods merchant in the 1915 state census.17

In 1916 Nathan Golosoff was listed as living at 174 Broad Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey, and his occupation was listed as Dry Goods (with no business address given). His occupation was listed as salesman, with no business address given, in 1917.36

During 1917 and 1918 Nathan Golosoff lived at 442 Amboy Avenue, Perth Amboy, New Jersey, (this address appears to have been an apartment over the store -- or stores -- operated by Harry and Constant Segal at this time).36,29

Nathan Golosoff lived circa 1918 at 442 Amboy Avenue, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.29 He was listed in the 1918 city directory as operating a dry goods store circa 1918 at 340 New Brunswick Avenue, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.29

On 12 September 1918 Nathan Golosoff lived at 340 New Brunswick Avenue, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey, according to his World War I draft registration.37 In 1919 Nathan Golosoff lived at 340 New Brunswick Avenue, Perth Amboy, New Jersey, and operated a dry goods store at the same address.1

In 1920 Nathan Golosoff lived at 148 Madison Avenue, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.2 His occupation was listed as dry goods in 1920 at 190 Smith Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.2

Nathan Golosoff and Anna Segal and their daughters Nathan Golosoff, Jennette Golosoff, Rose Golosoff, Sadie Golosoff and Freda Golosoff were apparently not recorded in the 1920 US census. They probably lived at either 112 Madison Avenue or 148 Madison Avenue, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey, at the time of the 1920 census. The above two candidate addresses are based on addresses listed for Nathan Golosoff in the 1920 and 1921 Perth Amboy city directories (the addresses of the entire family can probably be inferred from Nathan's address listed in city directories published between 1905 and the mid-1930s).38

Between c1921 and c1923 Nathan Golosoff lived at 112 Madison Avenue, Perth Amboy, New Jersey. Between c1921 and c1926 Nathan Golosoff's occupation was listed as operating a millinery shop at 190 Smith Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.

Nathan Golosoff is said to have at least partially financed a trip by a young family member, Leon Komisaruk, who traveled to Eastern Europe to assist in the extraction of is sister, Sonya Golosoff, and several members of her family (and others) from Southern Russia circa 1922. This was during the time of famine and civil war in that area.39,40

Circa 1924 Nathan Golosoff lived at 138 Market Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.11 Between c1925 and c1926 Nathan Golosoff lived at 202 Market Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.

Circa 1927 Nathan Golosoff lived at 182 Market Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.14 His occupation was listed as millinery in 1927 at 122 Smith Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.14 Circa 1929 Nathan Golosoff lived at 384 Washington Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.15

Nathan Golosoff appeared on the census of 14 April 1930 at 287 Smith Street, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey, (this same residence address appeared in the 1930 and 1931 city directories).24 He was listed as a hatter in the 1930 census.24 His occupation was listed as a millner at 277 Smith Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey, in the 1930 and 1931 city directories.16

Circa 1935 Nathan Golosoff lived at 111 Brighton Avenue, Perth Amboy, New Jersey, and his occupation was listed as proprieter.4

Between c1935 and 1945 Nathan Golosoff lived at 272 Market Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.

Nathan Golosoff and Anna Segal appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey at 272 Market Street, enumerated 21 April 1940. The home was listed as rented for $40 per month and not on a farm. The official date of that census was 01 April 1940. Their children Jeannette Golosoff, Rose Golosoff, Sadie Golosoff and Freda Golosoff were listed as living with them. All household members were listed having lived in the same house on 1 Apr 1935. Nathan Golosoff and Anna Segal were listed as ages 61 and 57, respectively, both married, not attending school in March 1940, having completed 2 years of schooling, having been born in Russia, and having completed first papers for citizenship. Nathan Golosoff and Anna Segal were listed as not working or seeking work, both with zero hours of work the week of 24-30 March, zero weeks of unemployment immediately prior to 1 April 1940, unable to work and doing housework, respectively, no occupation was listed for them and no income was reported for them. The amount listed for rental of the home is puzzling because Jeannette Golosoff, living in the home, had apparently purchased the house in 1939. Perhaps the others (or, at least, her employed sisters) paid rent to Jeannette. The census notation that they lived in the "same house" in 1935 suggests they might have been renting the home prior to Janette purchasing it.41

Nathan Golosoff was listed as retired (usual or previous occupation was merchant) when he registered as resident alien 25 September 1940. He was also listed as retired in a 1942 World War II draft registration.27,26

Nathan Golosoff died on 4 June 1945 at Middlesex County Hospital, North Brunswick, Middlesex County, New Jersey, at age 67. The obituary listed his survivors as his wife (name given as Anna), four daughters, grandson, Carl Fields (surname incorrectly listed as "Field"), and sister, Mrs Sonia Komisaruk of New York City. His family living in New Jersey apparently did not realize he had a surviving brother, Mendel Golosoff living in Canada.23,42,43 He was buried on 5 June 1945 at Hebrew Progressive Cemetery, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.23 The usual occupation listed on his death certificate indicated he was a merchant.23 His residence at the time of his death was at 272 Market Street, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.23

Notes and Observations: In 1940 he was listed as being 5 ft 1 inch tall, 165 pounds, with gray hair and brown eyes.27

Personal recollections about Nathan Golosoff are described in an end note.44

Freidal Segal may also have been known as Fannie.2 She was born circa 1878 in Russia.1

Freidal Segal married Ezra Mehaloff, son of Freida (--?--), circa 1900 in Russia.3,2

Freidal Segal entered the United States at New York, New York, (or possibly docks in Hoboken, New Jersey, which is part of New York harbor) on 24 February 1906 together with Ezra Mehaloff, Lucy Mehaloff, Lillian Mehaloff, Theodore Herzl Mehaloff, Freidal Segal, Sophia Segal, Ester Koltinoff and Annie Koltinoff. Their names listed on the passenger manifest as: Faund, Freide, Leibon, Lesbon, and Theador Michalowski and Schino, Ester, and Chais Kohlonan (as initially transcribed by Ancestry.com). They traveled on board the S.S. Breslau, which was operated by the North German Lloyd line. They had sailed from Bremen, Germany on 10 Feb 1906. The Breslau passenger list indicates: (1) the group traveled as second class passengers; (2) they apparently entered the US with $200 among them ($100 for each family); (3) they had lived in Berdyansk (Taurdia Guberniya) prior to leaving Russia; (4) their final destination in the US was Perth Amboy, New Jersey; and (5) they apparently intended to join a relative, Joseph Slobodien, a uncle, by marriage, of Friedal and Sonia. Joseph Slobodien lived in Perth Amboy, New Jersey; his home address at that time is listed as 127 Smith Street, Perth Amboy. Ezak Mehaloff’s occupation is recorded in the passenger list as locksmith. Sonia’s husband did not enter the US with the rest of his family. There is a cryptic (crossed-out) entry near the end of one of the sheets of paper making up the passenger list that initially suggested he may have initially been scheduled to come with the others, but did not board the ship. However, it is now believed this crossed out entry was the begining of an entry for Sonia, which was crossed out in order to be able to place her name at the beginning of a later page that contained enough room on it to list her entire family on the same sheet.4,5

Freidal Segal died circa 1910 in New Jersey.1

Constant Segal was also known as Jechusial Ziegelneitsky prior to coming to the United States (this surname has been spelled several different ways in various sources, including Segalnitzky and Ziegelneitski).25 He was born on 25 December 1887 at Bertjansk, Russia. The NY City marriage index lists his birthplace as "Gabrick, Russia". This could be a transcription error.22,24

Constant Segal entered the United States at New York, New York, on 3 March 1906 as part of an extended family consisting of Moses Segal, Reisel Golosoff, Harry Segal, Hannah Yowell, Constant Segal, Nathan Golosoff, Anna Segal and Jeannette Golosoff. They traveled on board the SS Chemintz, which was operated by the North German (Nord Deutsch) Lloyd line. They had sailed from Bremen, Germany on 17 February 1906. The Chemnitz passenger list indicates: (1) the group traveled as second class passengers; (2) they entered the US with $713 among them; (3) their final destination in the US was Perth Amboy, New Jersey; and (4) they intended to join a relative, Joseph Slobodien, a brother-in-law of Moses Segal, who lived in Perth Amboy, New Jersey.26 Constant Segal was listed as a student on the ship passenger at the time of his entry to the United States.26

Constant Segal was educated circa 1912 at Cooper Union University, New York, New York, receiving the degree of B. S. in Engineering.1 Between c1912 and c1916 Constant Segal's occupation was listed as employed as an engineer by Otis Elevator company (possibly in the Newark, New Jersey area).1

Constant Segal married Anna Glass, daughter of Max Glass and Lena Weilestein, on 18 September 1915 at Manhattan, New York, New York.27

Between c1917 and c1955 Constant Segal's occupation was usually listed as the owner-operator of a dry goods store at 444 Amboy Avenue, Perth Amboy, New Jersey. The store seems to have carried the name "Segal Brothers" during at least c1917-1919 and "Segal's Store" and/or "Segal Stores" during the 1940s (the latter name perhaps implying that "it" was operated as more than one store, at least during some time periods). In some documents, his occupation was just listed as "merchant" (or a near equivalent, such as "dry goods merchant") without describing his business in more detail.

Between c1917 and c1930 Constant Segal lived on Amboy Avenue, almost certainly above the Segal dry goods store. The store occupied the ground floor of buildings on Amboy Avenue with street numbers 440, 442, and 444. Between c1917 and c1921, his residence was generally listed as 440 Amboy Avenue, Perth Amboy, New Jersey. Between 1922 and 1930, the street address of the residence was generally listed as 444 Amboy Avenue. The buildings have entrances into both the ground-level "storefronts" and into stairwells that provide access to second-floor apartments. It is unclear if the change in the street number of his residence from 440 to 444 implies a change in his residence from one second-floor apartment to another, or if sometimes a separate street number was assigned to one of the stairwell entrances. A change in apartments around 1920 is not impossible because the Harry Segal family appears to have vacated one of these apartments about this time. He was stated to have lived in 1920 at Newark, New Jersey.28

Constant Segal and Anna Glass appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey at 442 Amboy Avenue, enumerated 3 January 1920. The residence was listed as rented. They apparently lived above Constant's hardware store in one of two apartments listed for the dwelling portion of that street address. The official date of that census was 01 January 1920. Their son Robert E. Segal was listed as living with them.23 Constant Segal was listed as a self-employed hardware merchant in the 1920 census.23

Constant Segal appeared on the census of 1930 at 444 Amboy Avenue, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.21 He was listed as a retail merchant, dry goods, in the 1930 census.21

Between c1931 and c1957 Constant Segal lived at 137 Kearny Ave, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.

Constant Segal and Anna Glass appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey at 137 Kearny Avenue, enumerated 10 April 1940. The home was listed as owned, valued at $10,000, and not on a farm. The official date of that census was 01 April 1940. Their children Robert Segal, Miriam Segal and Melvin Leonard Segal were listed as living with them. All household members were listed having lived in the same house on 1 Apr 1935. Constant Segal and Anna Glass were listed as ages 52 and 46, respectively, both married, not attending school in March 1940, having completed 4 years of high school, and having been born in Russia and New York respectively, with Constant being a naturalized US citizen. Constant was listed as working, having worked 55 hours, and not seeking work the week of 24-30 March. His occupation was listed as proprietor of a retail general store working on his own account. He is listed as having worked 52 weeks in 1939, no wage income was reported for him, but he did have other income (other than wages or salary) in excess of $50. Anna was listed as working, having worked 30 hours, and not seeking work the week of 24-30 March. Her occupation was listed as saleswoman of a retail general store working as an unpaid family worker. She is listed as having worked 40 weeks in 1939, no wage income was reported for her, but she did have other income (other than wages or salary).29

Constant Segal's business was listed as Segal's Store, varieties, in the 1942 Perth Amboy city directory at 444 Amboy Avenue, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.17

Constant Segal died on 19 December 1957 probably at Roosevelt Hospital, Edison, Middlesex County, New Jersey, at age 69.1,30,31 He was buried at Beth Israel Cemetery, Woodbridge, Middlesex County, New Jersey. His obituary indicated he was survived by his wife, one daughter, two sons, six grandchildren, a sister, and a brother.31

Notes and Observations: The information in the next several paragraphs was adapted [[by Carl Fields, who has added some material, which is usually indicated by double square brackets]] from The Segal Family History book, put together in 1984. The "book" states that Melvin Siegel is the source for at least some of the "personal stories" (concerning Constant) in the Family History.

Youngest son of Moshe Leib and Reisel. Constant came to Perth Amboy, New Jersey with his family at the age of sixteen. He graduated from Perth Amboy High School and received an engineering degree from Cooper Union University in New York City. Constant was employed by the Otis Elevator Company as an engineer but left after a few years to enter the retail business back in Perth Amboy. He married Anna Glass from Carteret, New Jersey in 1915 and had three children: Robert, Miriam and Melvin. Constant was a kind, gentle man, loved and respected by his family and all who knew him.1

George Siegel was also known as Gersh Zigelneitsky and also Grisha, Gersch, and Joshua (prior to coming to the United States). The "old county" surname has been spelled several different ways, including Tseigenitzkty and Zigalnitzky.4,5 He was born on 18 January 1873 at Berdiansk, Russia.5

George Siegel married Betty Milwittsky, daughter of (--?--) Milwittsky, on 5 October 1904 in Berdiansk, Russia.4,6,5

George Siegel was a "constructing engineer" in 1920.1

George Siegel lived in 1920 in Russia (possibly in Kiev.)1,5

George Siegel entered the United States at New York, New York, on 3 August 1923 together with George Siegel, Betty Milwittsky, William Sanderson and Herbert Sanderson (some documents suggest the arrival date was 2 Aug 1923). They traveled (using the family surname transcribed as Zigalnitsky by ellisland.org and as Sigalaitsky by Ancestry.com) on board the SS Constantinople, which was operated by the Byron line. They had sailed from Constantinople Turkey on 7 July 1923. The Constantinople passenger list indicates: (1) the group traveled as second class passengers; (2) they apparently entered the US with $90 among them (George with $70 and William with $20); (3) their “last permanent residence” had been Constantinople Turkey (this might be a convention used by the steamship company, another document indicates George lived in Kiev, Russia immediately prior to coming to the United States); (4) their final destination in the US was Perth Amboy, New Jersey; and (5) they intended to join a relative, Isadore Siegel, George’s brother. Isadore Siegel lived in Perth Amboy, New Jersey at 121 Market Street. George’s occupation is listed as a civil engineer, Betty’s apparently as a housekeeper, Herbert’s as a student, and William’s as a painter.7,8

George Siegel filed a declaration of intent ("first papers") to become a naturalized citizen of the United States on 24 April 1924. At that time he lived at 940 Bergen Street, Newark, New Jersey, (presumably with his family). His occupation was listed as storekeeper. He listed his place of residence prior to coming to the United States as Kiev, Russia. His physical description was listed as 5 ft 8 inches tall, weight 168 pounds, with dark brown hair and black eyes.5

He moved to Los Angeles County, California, in December 1927.5

George Siegel submitted a petition for naturalization (his "second papers" or "final papers") at Los Angeles, Califronia on 5 August 1929. This was petition 27482 (probably a petition sequence number for that particular court). At that time he lived at 1934 Brooklyn Avenue, Los Angeles, California, (while his wife -- and the rest of his family -- resided in New York city). He listed his occupation as architectural designer. The "petition" form also contains information about other family members.5,9 He was naturalized on 13 December 1929 in Los Angeles, California. His naturalization certificate number is 3177907. His address at that time was apparently 2331 Holister Terrace, Glendale, Los Angeles County, California.5,9,10,11

George Siegel and Betty Milwittsky appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California at 1151 1/2 South Hoover Street, enumerated 11 April 1940. The home was listed as rented for $50 per month and not on a farm. The official date of that census was 01 April 1940. A lodger, Thomas A Brand, was listed as residing with them. George was listed having lived in the same place on 1 Apr 1935 (which was stated to not be on a farm). Betty was listed having lived in the New York (City), Kings County, New York on 1 Apr 1935 (also not on a farm). George and Betty were listed as ages 67 and 59, respectively, both married, born in Russia, and not attending school in March 1940. George had completed 4 years of college and Betty had completed 4 years of high school. Both were listed as not employed and not seeking work the week of 24-30 March, with the reason given as "Other". No occupation was listed for either of them. He was also, at various times, known as Isaac Siegel, Isadore M Siegel (it is unclear what the "M" stood for), Yitzhak (and/or possibly Yisroel) Ziegenelitsky, Isaac Ziegelnitzky, and "Doctor" (even family members seemed to refer to him as "Doctor", which was used more as a name than as a title). Isadore Siegel was born on 5 January 1885 in Russia.17,29,30,31

Between 1903 and 1908 Isadore Siegel studied medicine at Fridrich Wilhelm University in Berlin, Germany.32 Circa 1909 Isadore Siegel's occupation was listed as "Locum Tenans" (a doctor substituting for another, who is on leave) at Frankfurt (or possibly Nuremberg), Germany.1 In 1910 Isadore Siegel received the degree of Medizin Doktorwurde from Berlin, Germany. His dissertation was entitled Pseudobulbarparalyse de Erwachsenen.33

Isadore Siegel immigrated in 1910 to the United States.20,21,30

Between c1910 and c1911 Isadore Siegel furthered his medical training (and knowledge of English) by serving as an intern at Lying-In Hospital, New York, New York.30

Isadore Siegel was passed the state board examination as a medical doctor on 5 July 1911 (presumably the examination for New Jersey).30

Between c1912 and c1914 Isadore Siegel's occupation was listed in the Perth Amboy city directory as a physician with an office at 145 Smith Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey. His residence was listed at the same address (the office/residence was listed as 143 Smith Street in the 1914 city directory). This address suggests the residence and office may have been above the Slobodien family shoe store.

Isadore Siegel married Jeanette Kramer, daughter of Abraham Kramer and Sarah Levine, on 28 July 1913 in New Jersey.30,34

Between c1915 and c1924 Isadore Siegel lived at 121 Market Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey. From 1915 until after 1949 Isadore Siegel's occupation was listed as a physician with an office at 121 Market Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey, (with two minor exceptions: the 1925 city directory listed his office location as the corner of Market and State Streets, and the 1927 city directory listed his office address as 245 State Street). For many of these years (perhaps all of them) the office was in a two-story building on the southwest corner of the intersection of Market Street and State Street (a building that still existed in 2006, although somewhat altered from its original configuration).

The lower floor of the building had an entrance at 121 Market Street, while a separate entrance at 245 State Street led to a stairwell to the upper story. When the building (with the basic configuration existing in 2006) was first constructed, the lower story held professional offices (more than one suite), while the upper story held the living quarters of the Isadore Siegel family. Later (possibly in the mid- or late-1940s), the space on the second floor was also converted to professional offices. It is unclear when the building existing on the site in 2006 was constructed. Isadore Siegel may have first (circa 1915) had an office/residence in an earlier building at the 121 Market Street address (or the building may have been remodeled to the basic configuration that existed in 2006 at some time after he first established offices there). A guess at when the building at the southwest corner of Market and State Streets might possibly have been reconstructed or remodeled is that around 1925 when the city directory indicates his residence was on High Street.

Isadore Siegel appeared on the New Jesey state census of 1915 at Perth Amboy, 1st Ward, Middlesex County, New Jersey.21 He was was listed as a physician in the 1915 state census.21

As of circa 1920, Isadore Siegel held memberships in American Medical Association, Free and Accepted Masons, and the Perth Amboy Hebrew Synagogue. At that time he also listed an interest in music, especially opera.30

Isadore Siegel (under the name Isaac Siegel) was listed as president of the American Drug and Food Company at 294 Market Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey, for a few years around 1925. This seems to have been a medical supply wholesale distribution company of some type. Harry Segal, Isadore's brother, was also an officer in this business.35

Isadore Siegel was identified to US immigration officials as a US resident contact when his brother, George Siegel entered the US with his (George's) family on 3 August 1923.36,37

Circa 1925 Isadore Siegel lived at 419 High Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.18

Between c1926 and c1945 Isadore Siegel lived at 245 State Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey. He was listed as a physican, in the medical profession, in the 1930 census.20,38

Isadore Siegel appeared on the census of 1930 at 121 Market Street, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.20

Isadore Siegel married Esther A. Kramer, daughter of Abraham Kramer and Sarah Levine, circa 1939.32

Isadore Siegel and Esther A. Kramer appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey at 121 Market Street, enumerated 12 April 1940. The home was listed as owned, valued at $7000, and not on a farm. The official date of that census was 01 April 1940. His children Shirley Eleanor Siegel and Natalie Siegel were listed as living with them. All household members were listed having lived in the same house on 1 Apr 1935. Isadore Siegel and Esther A. Kramer were listed as ages 55 and 44, respectively, both married, and both not attending school in March 1940. Isadore was listed as having completed 6 years of college, having been born in Russia, and being a naturalized citizen. Isadore was listed as employed and had worked 50 hours of work the week of 24-30 March. His occupation was listed as a medical doctor in private practice for his own account (self-employed). He worked 32 weeks in 1939, had no wage income, and had other (non-wage) income in excess of $50. Esther was listed as having completed 4 years of college and born in New Jersey. Esther was listed as doing housework, not working for wages, and not seeking such work the week of 24-30 March. No occupation was listed for her, no 1939 wage income was reported, and she had no 1939 other (non-wage) income in excess of $50.39

Circa 1949 Isadore Siegel lived at 241 State Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.40

Isadore Siegel died on 28 April 1968 at Perth Amboy General Hospital, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey, at age 83.24,31,41 He was buried at the Congregation Shari Tephalo/Congregation Beth Mordecai Cemeteries on Florida Grove Road, Perth Amboy, New Jersey, (he was buried in the Beth Mordicai section). HIs obituary indicated he has practiced in Perth Amboy for 58 years, was a former member of the staff at Perth Amboy General Hospital, and was a member of the American Medical Association and the Middlesex County Medical Society. The obituary listed his two daughters, his son, and mentioned that he had six grandchildren. It mentioned his late wife, Jeanette Kramer Siegel, but not her sister, his surviving wife.24,41 Isadore Siegel lived in Metuchen, New Jersey, at the time of his death.31

Isadore Siegel's Social Security Number was 143-38-6498 (card issued in New Jersey).31

Notes and Observations: The information in the next several paragraphs was adapted ((by Carl Fields, who has added some material, which is usually indicated by double parens)) from The Segal Family History book, put together in 1984. The "book" states that Ralph Siegel is the source for at least some of the "personal stories" (concerning Isadore) in the Family History.

Sixth child of Moshe Lieb and Reisel. Isadore (Hebrew name "Ylsroel" ((or possibly Yitzhak))) was born in Berdjonsk, Russia. He was a good student and after completing Gymnasium attended the Friedrich Wilhelm University of Berlin for medical studies ((starting)) in 1903. As a student he also involved himself with the music and culture of Russian émigrés there.

In 1906, Berlin was a stopping place for the Ziegelnietski ((Segal)) family as they waited for visas to sail ((to the United States)). As many of the group as possible stayed with Isadore in his small one-room apartment. Luckily, they were able to leave before the landlord evicted them.

Upon arriving to the United States, the name "Ziegelnietski" was shortened to "Segal". Moshe Leib wrote to his son in Berlin about the name change, but since the German spelling was "Siegel", that became Isadore's (and later Grisha's) new last name.

Isadore graduated from his five-year medical course after completing his thesis on neurology of the brain. To earn enough money to travel to the States, he spent a year as a "Locum Tenans" (a doctor substituting for another on leave) in either Frankfurt or Nuremburg. House calls were traditionally made at that time on bicycles, so young doctor Isadore was forced to learn how to ride.

In 1910, Isadore came to Perth Amboy, USA. The story goes that he was so disappointed when the train pulled into the run-down station, that he almost turned back. But, he didn't.
Isadore needed to learn English before he opened up his own practice, so he got a job in New York City at the Lying-in Hospital delivering babies. There he became an expert in obstetrics. He finally joined the rest of the family in Perth Amboy, opened up his own general practice, and became widely known by his family and friends as "The Doctor".

There, it didn't take him long to get married, and in 1913 chose a local Jewish girl of eighteen, Jeanette Kramer. She taught piano, and also happened to be his second cousin ((actually, they appear to have been first cousins, once removed)), the ((grand))daughter of Moshe Leib's sister, Mrs. Epstein ((Rose Ziegelneitsky Levine Epstein)). Jeanette died in 1934, and five years later Isadore married her sister Esther. ((Family (hearsay) folklore is that his second marriage was less happy than his first marriage had been.)1)

Samuel Koltunoff was born circa 1865.2

Samuel Koltunoff married Sonia Segal, daughter of Moses Segal and Reisel Golosoff, circa 1890 in Russia.3,4

Samuel Koltunoff seems to have been listed in the city directory as residing and operating a dry goods store in 1910 at 681 State Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey. However, there is some question as to whether he actually ever entered the United States. This one city directory listing is the only record as yet uncovered that he ever lived in the United States. His wife (or former wife) is listed in the 1910 census as being married to Harry Goldstein (but it is likely that information for the 1910 city directory was collected some time in 1909, or possiibly even earlier, so that 1910 marital status could be consistent with him living in the US -- and in Perth Amboy -- for a time between 1906 and 1910).1

Samuel Koltunoff may have died possibly between 1906 and 191 (possibly before his wife and children immigrated to the US), although his wife was listed as married at the time of her immigration, not as a widow.5

Harry Goldstein and Sonia Segal appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of at Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey at 99 Madison Avenue, enumerated 12 January 1920. The home was listed as owned and mortgaged. The official date of that census was 01 Janurary 1920. Their daughter Dorothy Goldstein was listed as living with them, along with Ester Koltinoff and Annie Koltinoff, Sonia's daughters from her first marriage, both listed as single and as step-daughters of the head of household. All of the members of the household were listed as being able to read and write. Dorothy was listed as attending school after September 1, 1919.12 His occupation was listed as real estate (self employed -- "own account") in the 1920 census.12

Harry Goldstein lived in 1921 at 99 Madison Ave, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.7 He was a salesman in 1921.7

Harry Goldstein died on 1 June 1928 at South Amboy, New Jersey, at age 61 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. A news article provides some additional details about this accident. The accident apparently took place in Morgan, New Jersey. Morgan is a political subdivision of the Borough of Sayerville, on the west shore of Raritan Bay, immediately south of South Amboy (http://www.morgan-nj.org/blog : accessed 17 June 2014). The article indicates "Goldstein was driving a truck of the Middlesex Tobacco and Confectionery Company of Perth Amboy. He had left the truck at the roadside opposite Rea's store and upon crossing the road to return to the machine was struck." He was rushed to the South Amboy hospital, but died shortly afterwards. The driver of the car that hit him was Miss Mary Mulder of Keansburg. She was taken into custody by a state trooper after the accident (but the article did not any additional information about possible charges against her). The article indicates Goldstein was a resident of Newark at the time of his death (which conflicts with information on his death certificate).11,10,15 He was buried at Hebrew Fraternity Cemetery, Fords, New Jersey. One source document apparently incorrectly identifies the burial location as the Hebrew Progressive Cemetery.11,10 He lived at 210 New Brunswick Avenue, Perth Amboy, New Jersey, at the time of his death.11 His usual occupation was listed on his death certificate as wholesale confectionary.11

Personal recollections about Harry Goldstein are described in an end note.16

Both Ester Koltinoff's forename and her maiden surname were spelled several different ways in various source documents. Her stepfather's surname, Goldstein, was used as hers in some documents. She was born in July 1893 in Russia.4

Ester Koltinoff immigrated in 1906 to the United States.5,3

Ester Koltinoff entered the United States at New York, New York, (or possibly docks in Hoboken, New Jersey, which is part of New York harbor) on 24 February 1906 together with Ezra Mehaloff, Lucy Mehaloff, Lillian Mehaloff, Theodore Herzl Mehaloff, Freidal Segal, Sophia Segal, Ester Koltinoff and Annie Koltinoff. However, it is now believed this crossed out entry was the begining of an entry for Sonia, which was crossed out in order to be able to place her name at the beginning of a later page that contained enough room on it to list her entire family on the same sheet.6,7

The 1920 census indicates she was naturalized in June 1906, but that year is probably incorrect (she had not been in the US long enough).3

Ester Koltinoff appeared on the census of 1910 at Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.2

Ester Koltinoff lived in 1912 at 100 Commerce Street, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.8 Between 1912 and 1915 Ester Koltinoff's occupation was listed as bookkeeper.

Ester Koltinoff lived in 1913 at 462 Compton Avenue, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.9 She lived in 1914 and 1915 at 343 Smith Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.10

Ester Koltinoff lived between 1915 and 1917 at 679 State Street, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.11 Between 1916 and 1919 Ester Koltinoff's occupation was listed as stenographer. She lived between 1918 and 1919 at 164 Broad Street, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.12,13,14

Ester Koltinoff appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey in the household of Harry Goldstein and Sonia Segal, at 99 Madison Avenue.3 She was listed as a stenographer working for a store in the 1920 census (a similar occupation was listed for her in the 1920 Perth Amboy city directory) on 15 January 1920.15,3

Ester Koltinoff lived in 1921 at 99 Madison Avenue, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.16 She was listed as a secretary in 1921.16

Ester Koltinoff appeared on the census of 1930 at 11 Yates Avenue, Newark, Essex County, New Jersey.5 She was listed as a saleslady, department store, in the 1930 census.5

William Sanderson entered the US as William Zigalnitzky. He initially used the surname Siegel (an americanized and shorted version of the original surname, with some German influence). Later, he had his surname legally changed to Sanderson. There is some indication his original first name may have been Wilhelm.2,3 He was born in 1905 at Dubbeln, Latvia, (Dubbeln is near Riga; at least one source gives alternative information: that he was born 22 Aug 1905 in Berdiansk, Russia.)4,2

William Sanderson entered the United States at New York, New York, on 3 August 1923 together with George Siegel, Betty Milwittsky, William Sanderson and Herbert Sanderson (some documents suggest the arrival date was 2 Aug 1923). George’s occupation is listed as a civil engineer, Betty’s apparently as a housekeeper, Herbert’s as a student, and William’s as a painter.5,6

William Sanderson graduated from at the National Academy of Design, New York, New York, in 1927. He had also had training at the Art Students League in New York.4

William Sanderson lived in August 1929 at New York, New York.2

He held a one-man show at Contemporary American Artists Gallery, New York, New York, in 1931 (at least one source indicates this show might have been in 1937).4

He worked as a book and magazine illustrator. His illustratons (and apparently some cartoons) are said to have appeared in "The New Yorker," "Esquire," and "The New Masses."4

William Sanderson and Herbert Sanderson legally changed their surnames from Siegel to Sanderson in the 1940s. William (a professional artist-cartoonist-illustrator) had apparently been using the surname Sanderson professionally for some time before he petitioned for a legal name change.3

His military "army enlistment record" is dated 3 April 1942. His enlistment location is given as Fort Jay Governors Island, New York. His residence is listed as Queens County, New York. He is listed as entering as a private, entering the service from civil life to serve for (essentially) the duration of the war. He is listed as born in 1905 in Russia. His education was given as "4 years of high school", civilian occupation: "commerical artist", and he was listed as single, without dependents. His height was listed as 69 inches and his weight as 190 pounds. During a portion of his military service he was stated at Lowry Field in Denver, Colorado (he may have been in the Army Air Corps -- the US Air Force did not exist as a separate branch of the military until about 1947). In 1945 he served in post-war Berlin as an interpreter.7,4

William Sanderson married Ruth Lambertson.4

William Sanderson was hired by Vance Kirkland to teach commercial art (and/or advertising design) at the University of Denver. He held this position for over 25 years, retiring in 1972. He continued to paint until 1985.4

His paintings are said to be appreciated for their composition and precise use of color. He exhibited paintings and other art work in over 200 group shows throughout Colorado and the West between 1945 and 1985. He exhibited with a group called the Fifteen Colorado Artists (he was a co-founder of this group).4

He is said to have illustrated several books. The US edition (in English) of The Cold Stone Heart (published in 1965) is an example ot this type of artwork.8

William Sanderson died in 1990.

A show featuring the exhibition of several of his paintings was held at Kirkland Museum of Fine and Decorative Art, Denver, Colorado, in 2005 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of his birth.4

Personal recollections about William Sanderson are described in an end note.4

Herbert Sanderson was also known as Herbert Siegel.4 He was born on 4 May 1909 in Russia.2,3

Herbert Sanderson immigrated in 1923 to the United States.1

Herbert Sanderson entered the United States at New York, New York, on 3 August 1923 together with George Siegel, Betty Milwittsky, William Sanderson and Herbert Sanderson (some documents suggest the arrival date was 2 Aug 1923). George’s occupation is listed as a civil engineer, Betty’s apparently as a housekeeper, Herbert’s as a student, and William’s as a painter.5,6 Herbert Sanderson lived in August 1929 at New York, New York.7

Herbert Sanderson married Rose (--?--).

Herbert Sanderson and Rose (--?--) appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Bronx Borough (New York City), Bronx County, New York at 2244 Morris Avenue, enumerated 8 April 1940. The home was listed as rented for $35 per month and (of course) not on a farm. The official date of that census was 01 April 1940. All household members were listed having lived in the same place (Bronx) on 1 Apr 1935. Herbert Sanderson and Rose (--?--) were listed as ages 30 and 27, respectively, both married, and not attending school in March 1940. Their family surname was listed as Siegel at the time of this census. Herbert Sanderson was listed as having completed 4 years of college, born in Russia, and a naturalized citizen. Rose was listed as having completed 3 years of college and born in New York. Herbert was listed as unemployed and seeking work the week of 24-30 March. He was listed as having been unemployed for 13 weeks as of 1 April 1940. His occupation was listed as social "syntist" (scientist, almost certainly) for "W. P. A. problem cases" (no "class of worker" was listed, possibly because this appears to have been a previous job). He reported 39 weeks worked in 1939, but no wage income, although he did have other income (other than wages and salary) in excess of $50 (suggesting he might have been paid "by the case," rather than receiving a salary or hourly wage). Rose is listed as doing housework, not employed for wages, and not seeking such employment. No 1939 wage income was reported for her and she did not have other (non-wage) income in excess of $50 in 1939. She reported working 52 weeks in 1939, which might refer to housework.4

William Sanderson and Herbert Sanderson legally changed their surnames from Siegel to Sanderson in the 1940s. William (a professional artist-cartoonist-illustrator) had apparently been using the surname Sanderson professionally for some time before he petitioned for a legal name change.1

Herbert Sanderson died in October 1974 at San Francisco, California, at age 65.2,3

Herbert Sanderson's Social Security Number was 114-26-4798, issued in New York.2,3

Variations of the forename that appear to relate to this individual include Ezak, Erza, Isidor, and Israel. An alternaive spelling for his surname is Meholoff.7 Ezra Mehaloff was born on 17 November 1871 at Sinferopil, Taurdia Guberniya, Russia, (an alternative birth date, from his death certificate, is 15 Nov 1872).8,7

Ezra Mehaloff apparently served in the Russian army at some time prior to coming to the United States.9

Ezra Mehaloff married Freidal Segal, daughter of Moses Segal and Reisel Golosoff, circa 1900 in Russia.10,7

Ezra Mehaloff entered the United States at New York, New York, (or possibly docks in Hoboken, New Jersey, which is part of New York harbor) on 24 February 1906 together with Ezra Mehaloff, Lucy Mehaloff, Lillian Mehaloff, Theodore Herzl Mehaloff, Freidal Segal, Sophia Segal, Ester Koltinoff and Annie Koltinoff. However, it is now believed this crossed out entry was the begining of an entry for Sonia, which was crossed out in order to be able to place her name at the beginning of a later page that contained enough room on it to list her entire family on the same sheet.11,9

Ezra Mehaloff lived in 1912 at 270 Washington Street, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.12 He sold meat in 1912 at 270 Washington Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.12 He was may have been an insurance agent at times circa 1913-1923. However, it is also possible that this "insurance agent" Ezra Mehaloff, who "appears" in only a few Perth Amboy city directories in the 1913-1923 era, was a different individual.13

Ezra Mehaloff apparently lived in 1913 at 177 Fayette Street, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.13

Ezra Mehaloff lived in 1915 at 332 Oak Street, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.14 He was an insurance agent in 1915.14

Ezra Mehaloff lived in 1923 at 292 Market Street, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.15 He was a partner at Braines & Mehaloff (possibly an insurance agency) in 1923.15

Between c1926 and c1931, Ezra Mehaloff operated a grocery store at 284 Smith Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.

Between c1926 and c1935, Ezra Mehaloff lived at 272 Market Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey. This was the residence of the Harry Segal family (Harry was the brother of Izak's or Ezra's late wife). He apparently effectively lived with the Harry Segal family as a boarder, not in a separate apartment. The house was a single-family home at that time.16

Ezra Mehaloff was a grocer in 1935 at 288 Smith Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.6

Ezra Mehaloff lived in 1940 at 287 Smith Street, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey. Tthis address appears to be directly across the street from his grocery listed as at 288 Smith Street in the 1940 Peth Amboy city directory.17,8 He was a grocer in 1940 at 292 Smith Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey. When he filled out alien registration form on 18 Nov 1940, he stated that he had been in the food business for 18 years (since about 1922.)17,8

Ezra Mehaloff and Lucy Mehaloff, Joy Milwitt and William Milwitt were apparently not recorded in the 1940 United States census. They were living in a single household at 287 Smith Street, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey. This residence probably should have been recorded on microfilm roll 2361 for the 1940 census, in Enumeration District 12-106, page 4B. People living at 285 Smith Street and 289 Smith Street appear to be recorded on that page.

Their residence was on the second floor (one floor above the ground floor) in a commercial building. The apartment was directly above a saloon. The entry door to the stairs to the apartments were in an alcove or indented area that also contained the entrance to the saloon. It is possible the census taker did not realize the alcove area also contained an entrance to residences above the saloon. A second family, named Sandler, lived on the third floor. They are also not listed on the census sheet. An additional family, named Stark (one family member had the forename Alex) lived a few doors away (probably in a similar above-ground-floor residence), and they may also have been left out of the census.

In March 1941, the extended family moved to 280 Watson Avenue, Perth Amboy, New Jersey in April 1940 at 287 Smith Street, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.18,19

Between c1942 and c1945 Ezra Mehaloff lived at 280 Watson Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey. He was a grocer in 1942 at 292 Smith Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.20

Ezra Mehaloff lived in 1945 at 280 Watson Street, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.21 He was a clerk in 1945 at Pure Food Market, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.21

Ezra Mehaloff died on 26 June 1946, at 9:20 AM, at Perth Amboy General Hospital, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey, at age 74. He had been hospitalized for one day prior to his death.22,7 He was buried at Mount Lebanon Cemetery, Woodbridge, Middlesex County, New Jersey. His death certificate indicates that at the time of his death he was widowed, retired (with his pre-retirement occupation not listed), and resided at 198 Lewis Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey (which is the same address as the informant on the death certificate, Theodore Mehaloff. Cause of death was redacted from this death certificate. The space on the death certificate for Social Security number is blank.7

Additional Notes and Observations: Research on this individual is difficult because he seems to have been recorded in very few United States censuses (very few entries have been located as of August 2013).

Some of the citations "assigned" to this individual in the 1913-1923 time frame may be associated with a different person with a similar name. Except for the 1913, 1915, and 1923 city directory entries (which could be for a different individual with a similar name), he seems to have been absent from Perth Amboy from 1913 to 1926. Family folklore is that he may have had a relatively brief second marriage, perhaps during this time period. The second marriage is said to have ended in divorce.

Anoher bit of family folklore is that a fourth child was born in his first marriage. This child apparently died soon after its birth and nothing is known about it.23

Lillian Mehaloff was born on 2 August 1903 in Russia.7

Lillian Mehaloff entered the United States at New York, New York, (or possibly docks in Hoboken, New Jersey, which is part of New York harbor) on 24 February 1906 together with Ezra Mehaloff, Lucy Mehaloff, Lillian Mehaloff, Theodore Herzl Mehaloff, Freidal Segal, Sophia Segal, Ester Koltinoff and Annie Koltinoff. However, it is now believed this crossed out entry was the begining of an entry for Sonia, which was crossed out in order to be able to place her name at the beginning of a later page that contained enough room on it to list her entire family on the same sheet.8,9

Theodore Herzl Mehaloff lived in 1927 at 272 Market Street, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.6 He was listed as a clerk, working for Ezra Mehaloff, at 284 Smith Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey, in the 1927 city directory.6

Theodore Herzl Mehaloff married Florence Seader, daughter of (--?--) Seader.

Theodore Herzl Mehaloff was listed in the in 1940 Perth Amboy city directory as living at 559 Cornell, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.7

Theodore Herzl Mehaloff appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey in the household of his aunt and uncle, Harry Segal and Hannah Yowell, along with his wife, Florence Seader, and Judith Mehaloff, the daughter of Teddy and Florence, and his cousins, Israel Segal and Ruth Segal, at 198 Lewis Street. The official date of that census was 01 April 1940. He was listed as: age 35, married, did not attend school during March 1940, had completed four years of high school, born in Austria (likely an error), and lived in same place on 1 Apr 1935. He was employed and worked 60 hours the week of March 24-30 1940. His occupation was listed as a salesman working in a retail grocery as a paid worker. In 1939 he worked 52 weeks, earned $960, and did not have income in excess of $50 from sources other than wages or salary. His name randomly appeared on a line of census form so that additional information was recorded for him. This addiitional information indicated that both his parents were born in Austria (probably incorrect), his first langage was Hungarian (also probably incorrect), he was not a US military veteran, he had a social security card and social security taxes were deducted from his wages, and his usual occupation was retail grocery sales as a paid worker.8

Between 1942 and 1949 Theodore Herzl Mehaloff lived at 198 Lewis Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey. He was a pharmacist in 1949 at Hospital Pharmacy Inc, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.9

In 1974, Theodore Herzl Mehaloff lived in a condominium near Fort Lauderdale, Florida, probably in a community called Lauderdale Lakes, Florida.10

Theodore Herzl Mehaloff died on 7 June 1995 at Silver Spring, Maryland, at age 89.2

Joy Milwitt was born on 28 July 1922 at Perth Amboy, New Jersey.1,5

Joy Milwitt appeared on the census of 1930 at 915 West Front Street, Plainfield Township, New Jersey.2

Joy Milwitt and Ezra Mehaloff, Lucy Mehaloff and William Milwitt were apparently not recorded in the 1940 United States census.

In March 1941, the extended family moved to 280 Watson Avenue, Perth Amboy, New Jersey in April 1940 at 287 Smith Street, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.6,7
