Della Minick married Cecil Ambrose Fields, son of Lindsey Waters Fields and Martha Ann Tayloe, circa 1931.4

Della Minick and Cecil Ambrose Fields appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California at 3688 Sepulveda Boulevard, enumerated 8 April 1940. The home (which may have been a trailer in a "trailer camp") was listed as owned, valued at $200, and not on a farm. The official date of that census was 01 April 1940. Their son Glendale C Fields was listed as living with them. All household members were listed having lived in Seminole, Oklahoma on 1 Apr 1935. Cecil Ambrose Fields and Della Minick were listed as ages 34 and 27, respectively, both married, born in Missouri and Oklahoma, respectively, with 8 and 10 years of schooling, respectively, and not attending school in March 1940. Cecil was listed as unemployed and seeking work the week of 24-30 March, and had been unemployed for three weeks (the form looks like his information was originally written on the wrong line and the schedule was corrected later). His occupation was listed as oil field work in oil fields as a private industry worker. He reported 49 weeks worked in 1939, $1259 in wage income, and had no other income (other than wages and salary) in excess of $50. Della is listed as doing housework, not employed for wages, and not seeking such employment. No occupation was listed for her. No 1939 wage income was reported for her and she did not have non-wage income in excess of $50 in 1939. The population schedule indicates a farm schedule was not filed for this household. Cecil's name appears on a line of the schedule that caused several supplementary questions to be asked of him. In response to these, he stated that both his parents were born in Missouri, his native language was English, he was not a veteran, he did not have a social security card, payments for social security were not withheld from his wages, and his usual occupation was oil field work in oil fields as a private industry worker.5,6

The Chemnitz passenger list indicates: (1) the group traveled as second class passengers; (2) they entered the US with $713 among them; (3) their final destination in the US was Perth Amboy, New Jersey; and (4) they intended to join a relative, Joseph Slobodien, a brother-in-law of Moses Segal, who lived in Perth Amboy, New Jersey.33 Harry Segal was listed as a merchant on the ship passenger list upon his entry to the United States.33

Between c1910 and c1920 Harry Segal's occupation was listed as the owner-operator of a dry goods store at 444 Amboy Avenue, Perth Amboy, New Jersey. The store seems to have carried the name "Segal Brothers" during at least c1917-1919. It seems to have been described as a dry goods and clothing store in the 1915 New Jersey census. It was apparently operated as a partnership between Harry and his younger brother Constant for part of this time.

Harry Segal appeared on the census of 1910 at 264 Washington St, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.13 He was listed as a merchant, dry goods, in the 1910 census.13

Between c1912 and c1920 Harry Segal was recorded as living at 444 Amboy Avenue, Perth Amboy, New Jersey. This was probably an apartment above the store he operated with his brother during a portion of this time.34

Harry Segal became a naturalized US citizen on 21 June 1912, while he was residing at Perth Amboy, New Jersey, (Certificate 218771). However, a second Certificate of Natuarlization also exists for him (Certificate 1328565, dated 13 May 1920). Naturalization is generally a two-step process, but the text of the 1912 certificate does not mention the first step, declaration of intent (sometimes called "first papers").27,29

Harry Segal appeared on the census of 1915 at 444 Amboy Avenue, Perth Amboy, 6th Ward, Middlesex County, New Jersey.20 He was was apparently listed as operating a dry goods and clothing store in the 1915 state census.20

Harry Segal was a dry goods storekeeper (self-employed) in 1917 at 444 Amboy Avenue, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.35

In 1920 and 1922 Harry Segal's occupation was listed as Treasurer, Raritan Investment Company at 414 Raritan Building, Perth Amboy, New Jersey. This appears to have been a real estate investment company. The Raritan Building is probably the about-four-story office building at 175 Smith Street.

Harry Segal and Hannah Yowell appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey at 444 Amboy Avenue, enumerated 3 January 1920. The residence was listed as owned and mortgaged. They apparently lived above the dry goods store in one of two apartments listed in the 1920 census for the dwelling portion of that street address (it is unclear if there were only two apartments in the "upstairs" portion of the building or if there could have been more). The official date of that census was 01 Janurary 1920. Their children Sarah Segal, Ida Segal and Israel Segal were listed as living with them. Everyone in the household age 10 and above was listed as being able to read and write and to speak English. All of the children were listed as attending school.29 Harry Segal was listed as a dry goods merchant (self employed) in the 1920 census.29

Between c1921 and c1934 Harry Segal lived at 272 Market Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey. Between c1922 and c1923 Harry Segal's occupation was listed as an employee of (or possibly as operating) the American Food and Drug Company (wholesale drugs) at 294 Market Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.36,11

Isadore Siegel (under the name Isaac Siegel) was listed as president of the American Drug and Food Company at 294 Market Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey, for a few years around 1925. This seems to have been a medical supply wholesale distribution company of some type. Harry Segal, Isadore's brother, was also an officer in this business.37

Between c1924 and c1930 Harry Segal's occupation was listed as the secretary of the New Jersey Milk and Cream Company at 195 New Brusnwick Avenue, Perth Amboy, New Jersey, (telephone number: 122). Other officers of the company were Julius Shulman (president) and Philip Levine (treasurer). He was listed as a wholesaler, dairy, in the 1930 census.14

Harry Segal appeared on the census of 1930 at 272 Market St, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.14

In 1931 Harry Segal's occupation was president of Segal's Service Station Inc. at 167 Fayette Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.28

Between 8 December 1931 and 19 December 1931 Harry Segal and Hannah Yowell were traveling from Naples, Italy to New York aboard the ship M/N Vulcana. The passenger list documents the origin (Naples) of the portion of the trip that terminated in New York. The starting point of the westbound trip was probably British Palestine (Israel) with a change of ships in Naples.

Between c1934 and c1937 Harry Segal and Hannah Yowell lived in British Palestine (Israel).16

Harry Segal and Hannah Yowell traveled on 2 June 1937 from Trieste to New York aboard the Vulcania (this is probably the second leg of a trip that started in British Palestine, with a change of ships -- or possibly an intermediate stop -- in Trieste).24

In 1937 Harry Segal lived at 440 Amboy Avenue, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.24

Between 13 July 1938 and 30 June 1941, he was employed by the US federal government’s Work Progress Administration (WPA) at various projects in Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey, and vicinity. His jobs at the initial work assignments were listed as laborer, but in the last assignment he was listed as a watchman. His initial pay rate was $0.50 per hour. Later, the pay rate was listed as $52.80 per month. During this later time interval (beginning around January 1940), a month may have referred to a 4-week period, rather than an actual calendar month, and may have been on the basis of a 30-hour work week (the sketchy personnel file obtained from the US National Archives is somewhat unclear).

Projects that he worked on (or that his time was charged to) included work at Raritan Arsenal and “improve Perth Amboy parks” (possibly including Washington Park, based on a “foot of Lee Street” work location he was directed to report to in one of the documents in his personnel file). However, the personnel file lists several other project numbers. The file does not include descriptions or work locations for these other project numbers. As of March 2017, no research has yet been done by this compiler (CCF) to attempt to locate additional information about these WPA projects.

The WPA documentation indicates he had been assigned an Identification Number of 12-7203. He also seemed to have been assigned “case number” of 8864. A cryptic note on the earliest document in the WPA personnel file (“Formerly on OP5-13-2-293”) suggests he might have been previously employed in a different government program.38

In 1940 Harry Segal lived at 198 Lewis Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.22

Harry Segal and Hannah Yowell appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey at 198 Lewis Street, enumerated 8 April 1940. The home was listed as rented for $45 per month and not on a farm. The official date of that census was 01 April 1940. Their children Israel Segal and Ruth Segal were listed as living with them, as well as Harry Segal's nephew, Theodore Herzl Mehaloff, and his nephew's wife and daughter, Florence Seader and Judith Mehaloff. All adult household members were listed as having lived in the same place on 1 Apr 1935. Harry Segal and Hannah Yowell were listed as ages 60 and 56, respectively, both married, born in Russia, naturalized citizens, not attending school in March 1940, and both having completed one year of high school. Harry Segal was listed as unemployed and seeking work the week of 24-30 March. He is listed as having been unemployed for 35 weeks. His occupation was listed as laborer on a W. P. A. project as a government worker (this was probably his most recent employment prior to the census). During 1939 he worked 26 weeks, had wage income of $370, and he had other (non-wage) income in excess of $50. Hannah Yowell was listed as keeping house, not working for wages, and not seeking such work the week of 24-30 March. No occupation was listed for her. She did not work in 1939 and had no wage income, but she did have other (non-wage) income in excess of $50.39

Harry Segal's World War II draft resistration record from 1942 indicates he lived at 198 Lewis Street, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey. However, the Perth Amboy city directory for 1942 gives his address as 105 Jefferson Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey. One would expect the 1942 city directory to be based on information collected in 1941 (but this is not necessarily always the case). The signifigance, if any, of these two different "1942" addresses is unclear.40 In 1942 Harry Segal's World War II draft registration indicated he was a "canvasser," in dry goods (self-employed -- his business address was the same as his home address). The Perth Amboy city directory for 1942 described his occupation as a peddler at Perth Amboy, New Jersey.26

Harry Segal died on 12 September 1949 (at 3:15 PM) at 199 Bergen Street, Woodbridge, Middlesex County, New Jersey, at age 69.31 He was buried at Beth Israel Cemetery, Woodbridge, New Jersey. His death certificate lists his occupation as retired. His residence was listed as 199 Bergen Street, Woodbridge, New Jersey, at the time of his death.31

Harry Segal's Social Security Number appears to have been 155-03-8491.38

Personal recollections about Harry Segal are described in an end note.41

Andrew Wheatley CCF Notes (3-12-2008) -- I'm bothered by various inconsistencies in this family over the years and suspect that I have at least one source document from some other family mixed in with the family I'm really concerned with. Also, it is possible that Andrew Wheatley (from 1851 census) might be the same person who is called George Wheatly in later source documents.

CCF Note (3/13/2008) -- In 1881 Census, there is another family living next door to Ann Henderson (and in same dwelling as Andrew Wheatley), that MIGHT be another married daughter of this Ann Henderson. That family name is Patterson. Try to look at marriage records to see if this is a relation.
