On 19 August 1809, Abel Sawyer, Samuel Sexton, Joseph Sawyer, Josiah Jarman, and Henry Jarman were recipients of a land grant of 65 acres on the east side of the Great Alligator River, opposite the north end of Wipping Creek Lake, in Tyrrell County, North Carolina. The tract was in the shape of a seven-sided polygon. The description in the survey report seems to imply that at least part of the westernmost boundary of the tract was adjacent to land owned by John Simmons (or perhaps it was adjacent to land surveyed by John Simmons). The sketch in the survey report is drawn in a conventional manner with north at the top of the sheet. This was Grant No. 829, Warrant No. 74. The grant was originally entered 4 September 1808. The land on the east side of the Great Alligator River is now (as this is written in 2016) within Dare County. Dare County was formed in the second half of the 1800s. Certain land east of the Great Alligator River was transferred from Tyrrell County to Dare County at that time.3,4

The home was owned with no mortgage and was on a farm. The official date of that census was 01 June 1900. This census is unique in that month and year of birth were requested for each individual, in additon to age at the official census date. James W Powers was listed as age 79 born in Tennesee in April 1821, married 8 years (for his then-current marriage), and employed as a farmer (both his parents were listed as born in North Carolina). Keziah Thomas Jarman was listed as age 47, born in Tennessee in June 1863, and married 8 years (both her parents were listed as born in Tennessee, which is probably incorrect, as is her reported birth year of 1863, which should be more like 1853 to be consistent with her reported age -- and also to be consistent with her having been listed in the 1860 census). She reported never having given birth to children. Her first name was garbled by the Ancestry.com transcriber; it is given as "Kasiars". The household also included Egbert Gilbert, a grandson of James W Powers, and Mary Jarman, a neice of Keziah Thomas Jarman. All members of the household age 10 and over could read, write, and speak English. No members of the household were reported to have attended school within the past year. An agricultural census schedule was returned for this household.8

Keziah Thomas Jarman may have died between 1900 and 1910. She appears in the 1900 census but has not yet been located on the 1910 census (as of June 2016).9

Notes and Observations: The year and location of her death is listed on some internet sites as 1927 in Kansas. This appears to be incorrect. A different individual with a similar name died in Kansas in 1927. The 1927 Kansas death seems to a person named Keziah (or Kezeah) Powers, whose burial site is listed on the "Find a Grave" web site (and perhaps other web sites). The 1920 census for Kansas (as listed on Ancestry.com), indicates "Kazeah" Powell (born about 1850) was living in Kansas, but she was married to a different Powers (not John W) and had been born in a different state (not Tennessee).9

George Wheatley was born circa 1819 at Newcastle, All Saints, Northumberland County, England.3

George Wheatley married Isabella Henderson, daughter of Andrew Henderson and Ann Henderson, on 22 March 1842 at All Saints, New Castle on Tyne, England.2 George Wheatley lived in 1842 at Dog Bank, New Castle on Tyne, Northumberland County, England.2 He's occupation was listed as a shipwright in 1842.2

George Wheatley appeared on the census of 1851 at Plumbers Char, Newcaste Upon Tyne, Northumberland County, England.3 He was listed as a pauper in 1851.3 He was listed as a ship wright in 1852.1

George Wheatley CCF Notes (3-12-2008) -- I'm bothered by various inconsistencies in this family over the years and suspect that I have at least one source document from some other family mixed in with the family I'm really concerned with. Also, it is possible that Andrew Wheatley (from 1851 census) might be the same person who is called George Wheatly in later source documents.

CCF Note (3-13-2008) -- There are also some confusing things concerning this family in the 1861 census. There is a George Wheatley married to an Isabel Wheatley living in Southwick. However none of their childred match up with the George and Isabella Wheatley I have located in previous censuses (although, only one of the three children listed in the 1861 census is old enough to have been listed in the previous census). In the same 1861 census, there is a Sewall Cains, living in Newcastle, who is married to an Isabella Cains, who seems to have a stepson named Thomas Wheatley living in his household. This could be the former Isabella Henderson, who has become widowed (or divorced) and then remarried.

Here is the 1861 census data for the Southwick Wheatley Family: 1861 England Census, RG9, Piece 3781, Folio 32, Page 37, GSU Roll 850882, Civil Parish: Southwick, Ecc Parish: Southwick, County: Durham, Reg Dist: Sunderland, Sub Reg Dist: Mond Wearmouth, ED 2. Household 218, Street (etc): Ogle Ter Bk?, George Wheatley (37, Earthenware Potter, born Northumberland County, Newcastle), Isabel Wheatley (37, born: Northumberland County, Newcastle), Margaret (11, Scholar, Durham County, Southwick), Mary A (8, Scholar, Durham County, Southwick), Ralph T (8 months, Durham County, Newcastle).
