He had no middle name.3 Clint Henson was born on 18 October 1915 in Oklahoma. (His death certificate lists his date of birth as 2 Oct 1915.)1,2,3

Clint Henson appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Sanger, Fresno County, California in the household of his parents, Art Henson and Rose P Harvey, at 620 J Street. The official date of that census was 01 April 1940. He was listed as: age 23, single, did not attend school during March 1940, had completed eight years of schooling, born in Oklahoma, lived in rural Comanche Oklahoma 1 Apr 1935, was employed, worked 60 hours the week of 24-30 March, zero weeks of unemployment immediately prior to 1 Apr 1940; occupation was listed as laborer working in a pharmacy as a private industry worker. Clint Henson died on 26 November 1986 at 12:40 AM, at Valley Medical Center, 445 S. Cedar, Fresno, Fresno County, California, at age 71. He apparently died from sepsis related to lung cancer. He had been dependent on a ventilator for some time before his death.1,3 He was buried at Sanger Cemetery, Sanger, Fresno County, California. His death certificate indicated his usual address at the time of his death had been 3554 N. Duke, Spot 148 (a mobile home park), Fresno, California. His occupation had been mill worker at Ranchers Cotton Oil, a cotton oil refinery. He had held that occupation for 25 years. His wife, Maxine Henson, was the informant on the death certifiate.1,3

John Clayton1,2

MotherRebecca Wood2
John Clayton was born circa 1750 at Perquimans County.2

John Clayton married Susan Sutton circa 1783 at Perquimans County, North Carolina. She may have previously been married to an older brother of John Clayton, so it could be that her name was Susan Clayton at the time of her marriage to John Clayton. John and Susan Clayton were probably separated by 1797, and may have separated even a few years earlier.2 During a court session October 1795, John Clayton acknowledged a land sale to Russel Armstrong at Tyrrell County, North Carolina. Also, in this same session, the court ordered that William Clayton be appointed overseer of the road in the "Roome" (place?) "and district of John Clayton."3

Allegedly, John Clayton and Betsy Jarman (whose surname was also sometimes given as German) lived together in Clayton's house from January 1800 until at least some time in 1813. They were said to have had "several" children, including two who were legitimized by an act of the North Carolina legislature.2,4

John Clayton was recorded as purchasing one or more items at the sale of personal property belonging to the estate of John Jarman in 1806 in Tyrrell County, North Carolina. He purchased a frying pan.5

John Clayton was recorded as purchasing one or more items at the sale of personal property belonging to the estate of Henry Cullipher in December 1806 at Tyrrell County, North Carolina. Items that he purchased included: a chisel, a coffee mill, and 4 hogs.6

John Clayton was recorded as purchasing one or more items at the sale of personal property belonging to the estate of David Cooper on 17 February 1808 at Tyrrell County, North Carolina. Items that he purchased included: one lot of copperware.7

John Clayton was fatally shot on the night of 23 August 1814 at Tyrrell County, North Carolina. An individual named Barney Jones was convicted of murder in conjunction with John Clayton's death. Jones was executed by hanging (apparently in early 1815). This shooting appears to have been the culmination of a dispute between John Clayton and Barney Jones that extended over a several-month time period. Other persons were indicted in conjunction with John Clayton's death (some as assessories and some for perjury for testimony given at a trial related to the case), but it is unclear if there were any additional convictions.8,9

Personal property belonging to the estate of John Clayton was inventoried and sold in the autumn of 1814. An estate sale was held on 22 Oct 1814. Items listed in the inventory and the sale list included: 1 horse, sheep, cows, tools, furniture, farming implements, tools, and housewares (this is not a complete list, some items omitted here for brevity and some because the handwriting could not be deciphered). at Tyrrell County, North Carolina. Persons recorded as purchasing items at the estate sale included: Joseph Godfrey, Thomas Sykes, William Liverman, Bets Jarman, Thomas Liverman, Isaac Sawyer and Joab Sawyer. The amounts received for sales items are listed in units of dollars and cents. The total proceeds from sale were about $245. The horse brought the largest amount (about $35) with a lot of cows, yearlings, and a bull bringing in the second largest amount (about $24). A lot of beds, furniture, and a table apprears to have brought $21.55. The word "lot" is used here in the sense of a collection of items sold together as if they were a set or a single unit.8

Joseph Sawyer

M
On 19 August 1809, Joseph Sawyer, Josiah Jarman, Henry Jarman, Abel Sawyer, and Samuel Sexton were recipients of a land grant of 65 acres on the east side of the Great Alligator River, opposite the north end of Wipping Creek Lake, in Tyrrell County, North Carolina. The tract was in the shape of a seven-sided polygon. The description in the survey report seems to imply that at least part of the westernmost boundary of the tract was adjacent to land owned by John Simmons (or perhaps it was adjacent to land surveyed by John Simmons). The sketch in the survey report is drawn in a conventional manner with north at the top of the sheet. This was Grant No. 829, Warrant No. 74. The grant was originally entered 4 September 1808. The land on the east side of the Great Alligator River is now (as this is written in 2016) within Dare County. Dare County was formed in the second half of the 1800s. Certain land east of the Great Alligator River was transferred from Tyrrell County to Dare County at that time.1,2

Frances Fortune's full name may have been Mary Frances Fortune (based on her being listed as "Mary F Fortune" in the 1910 census).3 She was born on 5 September 1903 in Washington.4

Frances Fortune appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Spokane (Ward 5), Spokane County, Washington in the household of her parents, Easter Elizabeth Johnson and James W. Fortune, at 210 Montgomery Avenue.3

Frances Fortune appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Spokane (Dodd District), Spokane County, Washington in the household of her father, James W. Fortune, at 1507 North Wall Street.1

Frances Fortune married Donald W Wilson, son of Harry S Wilson and Helen (--?--), circa 1926. The date of their marriage is estimated based on Frances' death certificate, which indicates she had worked at her occupation, housewife, for 8 years at the time of death in 1934.5,4

Frances Fortune and Donald W Wilson appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Spokane, Spokane County, Washington at 2017 York, enumerated 10 April 1930. Their ages were listed as 29 and 26, respectively, born in Pennsylvania and Washington, respectively, ages at first marriage were 25 and 22, respectively, both did not attend school the previous year, and both could read and write. The home was listed as owned, valued at $2500, and not on a farm. A radio was present in the home. The official date of that census was 02 April 1930. Their daughter Beverly R Wilson was listed as living with them, Both adults in the household were listed as being able to read and write. Donald was listed as employed and working as a salesman in the insurance industry as a private industry worker. No occupation was listed for Frances.6

Frances Fortune died on 5 December 1934 at Deaconess Hospital, Spokane, Spokane County, Washington, at age 31. She died from acute caridac dialation apparently caused by chronic myocarditis. Her address was listed as 2017 York (or perhaps West York), Spokane. The brief newspaper report of her death said only it had occurred at "a local hospital". She was said to have lived in Spokane for 25 years at the time of her death. The death certificate indicates she last worked at her occupation (housewife) on 15 Nov 1934, about 3 weeks prior to her death. This may indicate the length of her final illness.7,8,4 She was buried at Riverside Park, Spokane, Washington.4

Lucile Cameron appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Everett, Snohomish County, Washington in the household of her parents, George E Cameron and Maude (--?--), at 1710 Hoyt Avenue. She was listed as age 9 and single.1

Lucile Cameron married Austin Johnson Fortune, son of James W. Fortune and Easter Elizabeth Johnson, on 29 November 1919 at Yakima, Washington.2,3

Lucile Cameron and Austin Johnson Fortune appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Spokane, Spokane County, Washington at 1507 North Wall Street, enumerated 12 January 1920. The home was listed as rented. The official date of that census was 01 January 1920. All members of the household were listed as being able to read and write.2

Lucile Cameron and Austin Johnson Fortune appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Seattle, King County, Washington at 7200 5th Avenue Northeast, enumerated 15 April 1930. Their ages were listed as 32 and 29, respectively, both born in Washington, ages at first marriage were 22 and 19, respectively, both did not attend school the previous year, and both could read and write. The home was listed as rented for $25/month and not on a farm. No indication was listed as to whether or not a radio was present in the home. The official date of that census was 02 April 1930. Their children Donald Fortune and Joyce Fortune were listed as living with them. All members of the household age 7 and over were listed as being able to read and write. The 7-year-old son was listed as attending school after September 1, 1929. Austin was listed as employed and working as a dispenser at a malted milk shop. No employment or occupation was listed for Lucile. Austin was incorrectly listed on the census form as not being a military veteran (it is possible the person supplying the information was not aware of his military service, or did not realize he could be a "war veteran" even though he had apparently never been stationed outside the United States during his service between 1917 and 1919).4

Lucile Cameron appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of at Everett, at Snohomish County, Washington at 35232 Wetmore Avenue, enumerated 2 April 1940. The home was listed as rented for $22 per month and not on a farm. This appears to have been one of four households living at the same street address. The official date of that census was 01 April 1940. Her children Donald Fortune, Joyce Fortune and Samuel Fortune were listed as living with her, All household members over age 5 were listed having lived in the same place (same city) on 1 Apr 1935. Lucile Cameron was listed as age 39, divorced, born in Washington state, with 8 years of schooling, and not attending school in March 1940. Lucile was listed as unemployed and not seeking work the week of 24-30 March. No occupation was listed, but she was listed as doing housework. She reported zero weeks worked in 1939, no wage income, and had other income (other than wages and salary) in excess of $50. The population schedule indicates a farm schedule was not filed for this household.5

Mary (--?--) was born circa 1883 in Russia.1

Mary (--?--) immigrated circa 1899 to the United States.1

Mary (--?--) married Nicholas Slobodien.1

Mary (--?--) and Nicholas Slobodien appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of South River, Middlesex, New Jersey at 60 Whitehead Avenue, enumerated 5 January 1920. The home was listed as owned and mortgaged. The official date of that census was 01 January 1920. Their children John Slobodien, Ann Slobodien, Michael Slobodien and Peter Slobodien were listed as living with them. All members of the household were listed as being able to read and write. No children were listed as attending school.

Ann was apparently several years older than him and he seems to be only about 14 years older than the oldest child in the household. It is possible some of the older children in their household in the 1920 census were her children from prior to their marriage, even though that census record indicates all the children were using the Slobodien surname.1

All of the children listed in the 1920 census are shown with the surname Slobodien. However, given the age of the children, relative to the age of Nichalos Slobodien, it seems possible that at least some of them may be her children from an earlier marriage -- or an earlier relationship. The three children seem to have been given the same "middle name" of Schemick. This might be a clue to the surname of an earlier husband of Mary's.

Lelia Moore Smith was born on 4 December 1895 in Cherokee County, Iowa.1

Lelia Moore Smith married Byron Fields, son of John Hartwell Fields and Mary Elizabeth Johnson, on 13 February 1913 at Ben Claire, South Dakota.2,3

Lelia Moore Smith and Byron Fields appeared on the South Dakota state census of June 1915 at Corson Post Office, Brandon Township, Minnehaha County, South Dakota. He was listed as a farmer, age 30, born in Missouri, married, and had lived in South Dakota for 7 years. He did not own his home or farm. He could read and write and had a grade school education. His wife's maiden name is listed as Lela Moore and they were listed as having been married in 1912. Corson is a small community roughly a mile north of Brandon (now a town), which is, in turn, about 5 miles east of Sioux Falls.4

Lelia Moore Smith and Byron Fields appeared on the 1920 Federal Census at Brandon, Minnehaha County, South Dakota, enumerated circa 3 January 1920. The residence was listed as rented. The official date of that census was 01 Janurary 1920. Their children Leroy W. Fields, Vearl Claud Fields and Lloyd Fields were listed as living with them. Both adults in the household were listed as able to read and write. No one in the household was listed as attending school.2

Lelia Moore Smith and Byron Fields appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Mounton Township, Murray County, Minnesota, enumerated 3 April 1940. The home was listed as rented for $10 per month and on a farm. The official date of that census was 01 April 1940. Their children Vearl Claud Fields, Doris Elizabeth Fields, Irvin John Fields, Clifford Fields and Darryl Fields were listed as living with them. All household members were listed as having lived on a farm in rural Rock County, Minnesota on 1 Apr 1935. Byron Fields and Lelia Moore Smith were listed as ages 54 and 44, respectively, both married, and not attending school in March 1940. Byron was listed as having completed 6 years of schooling and born in Missouri. Lelia was listed as having completed 8 years of schooling and born in Iowa. Byron was listed as employed, having worked 60 hours, and not seeking work the week of 24-30 March. His occupation was listed as a farmer on a farm and working on his own account (self-employed). He reported 52 weeks worked in 1939, no wage income, and had other income (other than wages and salary) in excess of $50. Lelia is listed as doing housework, not employed for wages, and not seeking such employment. No occupation was listed for her. No 1939 wage income was reported for her and she did not have non-wage income in excess of $50 in 1939. The population schedule indicates a farm schedule was filed for this household. A document in the mid-1940s military personnel file for one of their sons indicates the farm associated with this household was a 360-acre dairy farm.5,6

Two of the sons of Byron Fields and Lelia Moore Smith, Daryl Eugene Fields and Leroy W. Fields, were injured in a serious truck accident near Hebron, Nebraska, during the early morning hours of 6 July 1948; Daryl's injuries were fatal. Byron Fields and Lelia Moore Smith had moved from Luverne Minnesota to Colorado circa 1947. They were visiting family members in the Luverne area in early July 1948. They drove to the Hebron, Nebraska, area immediately after learning of the accident to attend to their injured son and make arrangements concerning the remains of the son who had died.7

Lelia Moore Smith died on 26 September 1962 at age 66.8,1 She was buried at Maplewood Cemetery, Luverne, Rock County, Minnesota. His burial plot said to be in fourth division of the East Section.8

Leroy W. Fields was apparently more commonly known as Roy.4 He was born on 21 June 1913 at Ben Claire, Minnehaha County, South Dakota.1,2,3

Leroy W. Fields appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Brandon, Minnehaha County, South Dakota in the household of his parents, Byron Fields and Lelia Moore Smith.1

Leroy W. Fields married Dorothy Sena Willroth, daughter of Earnest John Willroth and Margaret D (--?--), on 6 September 1936 at Luverne, Minnesota.2

In the early morning hours of 6 July 1948 brothers Daryl Eugene Fields and Leroy W. Fields were in a serious truck accident about six miles north of Hebron, Nebraska. Daryl Eugene Fields was killed. Leroy W. Fields suffered painful, but not life-threatening or permanently disabling injuries. At that time, both brothers lived in Luverne, Minnesota.

They were transporting two farm tractors and other farm machinery in a flat-bed tractor and semi-trailer rig from Luverne to Medford, Oklahoma. They had left Luverne about 5 PM on Monday, July 5th. The accident took place around 2:50 AM. At that time, Daryl was driving, while Leroy was sleeping inside an army sleeping bag under one of the tractors on the semi-trailer.

Daryl is believed to have fallen asleep while driving. The rig ran into a deep ditch, likely killing Daryl instantly (a newspaper article describing the accident suggested the rig may also have sheared off a wooden utility pole alongside the highway and noted that the accident took place at one of the relatively few locations in that stretch of highway where a deep ditch is alongside the road). A heavy-duty wrecker had to be brought in to remove the wrecked trailer (and its load) in order to reach the cab containing Daryl's body. The article refers to Leroy W. Fields as Roy Fields.

The parents of the two brothers, Byron Fields and Lelia Moore Smith, had moved from Luverne Minnesota to Colorado circa 1947. In July 1948, they were visiting family members in the Luverne Minnesota area. They drove to the Hebron, Nebraska, area after learning of the accident.4

Leroy W. Fields married Lucille Ruth Brikhous, daughter of Ervin Brikhous and Grace Pearl Chase, on 4 February 1950 at Luverne, MInnesota.2

Leroy W. Fields died on 15 August 1996 at Denver, Colorado, at age 83. Shortly before his death, he lived in Commerce City, Adams County, Colorado 80022.2,3
