The surnane of the first wife is taken to be the same as that of his second wife, who is believed to have been an older sister of his second wife, based on family folklore. Their maiden surname has sometimes been recorded as Frefon, possibly based on a misreading of some older handwritten documentation, including the marriage certificate to the second wife (which took place in New Jersey). Definitive docuementation that they were sisters has not yet been uncovered.

Charles I Bardin appeared on the census of 1910 at 101st Street, Manhattan, New York County, New York.17 His occupation was listed as "Hat Retail Store" in the 1910 census.17

Between c1917 and c1919 Charles I Bardin lived at 336 Maple Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey. Between c1917 and c1919 Charles I Bardin's occupation appears to have been a hat merchant or salesman at New York, New York. He was listed as a commerical trader for the Samuel Miller Company on 12 September 1918.7

Charles I Bardin and Sarah Slobodien appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey at 143 Smith Street (Ward 3), enumerated 8 January 1920. The home was listed as rented and appears to be an apartment over the Slobodien shoe store. The official date of that census was 01 January 1920. Their children Gladys R Bardin and Bernice Bardin were listed as living with them. Benjamin Franklin Slobodien, Sarah's brother (actually half-brother), was also listed as part of this household (Household 195). However, Benjamin is also listed as the head of a household, so it is unclear if Benjamin was part of the Bardin household or if he lived in a separate apartment above the shoe store. It appears that at this time Benjamin, a physician, maintained an office over the shoe store. His office suite may have included living quarters. Charles and Benjamin were explicitly listed as being able to read and write, but no entry was recorded in these columns for Sarah, Gladys, and Beatrice. Beatrice was listed as attending school after September 1, 1919 (but Gladys was not so listed).13 Charles I Bardin was listed as a hatter, wholesale (working on his own account), in the 1920 census.13

Personal recollections about James R Prince are described in an end note.8

Notes and Observations: Based on the 1900 and 1910 censuses, Carl Fields suspects the name of J R Prince's father was William Prince, whose father's name, in turn, might have been Nathan. Not only is this speculation, but there seem to have been two or three different William Princes and two or three different Nathan Princes in the Big Bottom Township area of Independence County, Arkansas in the late 1800s. A further confusion is that, despite the several people named Prince who lived in Big Bottom Township at the time of the 1870 census, several sources indicate this James Prince was born in Tennessee. This suggests his particular Prince family may have moved to Independence county when he was a very young child.
