Nicholas Slobodien1

M, b. 2 June 1890
Nicholas Slobodien is listed in several primary documents with the surname Slobodien. According to Philip R. Slobodien (in a phone conversation with Carl Fields, around 2006), family folklore is that Nicholas was an orphan who was taken in by one of the Perth Amboy Slobodien families in the early 1900s (probably the family of the elder Philip Slobodien). One item that makes this story suspect is his stated immigration date of 1912. If both that date and his age are approximately correct, he came to the US at around age 22, which is a bit old to be what is most commonly thought of as "taken in" as a "orphan." There may be a somewhat more complicated "story" here -- one undiscovered, as yet.

His original surname (if it is different from Slobodien) is unknown (as of June 2013). If that surname is different from Slobodien, there is a possibility he may not have have been of Jewish ethnicity. He seems to have been using the Slobodien surname by 1917. He was born on 2 June 1890 at Curzk?, Russia. This location might possibly be Kursk, the site of an historic tank battle between Nazi Germany and the USSR during World War II.1

Nicholas Slobodien immigrated circa 1912 to the United States.2

Nicholas Slobodien married Mary (--?--).2

Nicholas Slobodien lived in 1917 at South River, New Jersey.3 He was apparently in the grocery and butcher business in 1917 at South River, New Jersey.1

Nicholas Slobodien and Mary (--?--) appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of South River, Middlesex, New Jersey at 60 Whitehead Avenue, enumerated 5 January 1920. The home was listed as owned and mortgaged. The official date of that census was 01 January 1920. Their children John Slobodien, Ann Slobodien, Michael Slobodien and Peter Slobodien were listed as living with them. All members of the household were listed as being able to read and write. No children were listed as attending school.

Ann was apparently several years older than him and he seems to be only about 14 years older than the oldest child in the household. It is possible some of the older children in their household in the 1920 census were her children from prior to their marriage, even though that census record indicates all the children were using the Slobodien surname.2 Nicholas Slobodien was listed as a grocery merchant working on his own account in the 1920 census.2
