Earl Casey was sometimes also known as Earl Southard.3,2 His name was listed as Earl T Southard in the 1930 census and as Earl Southard on his marriage license, death certificate, and grave marker. Southard, his stepfather's surname, may also have appeared on other documents.4 He was born on 18 July 1913 in Arkansas.2

Earl Casey appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of North Fork, Baxter County, Arkansas in the household of William Thomas Southard and Mary Jane Fields.1

Earl Casey appeared on the census of 1930 Norfolk, Baxter County, Arkansas.4 He was listed as a farm hand, on a farm, in the 1930 censis.4

Earl Casey married Octa Green on 11 October 1935 Baxter County, Arkansas.3,2

Earl Casey died on 28 August 1936 at 6:30 AM at Batesville, Independence County, Arkansas, at age 23. He apparently had been taken to Batesville for medical treatment after suffereing a fractured skull in a fight at Calico Rock, Arkansas on 26 Aug 1936. The death was listed as accidental on his death certificate (not a homicide).5,2 He was buried at Wayland Arbor Cemetery, Dolph, Izard County, Arkansas. His death certificate list burial site only as "near Rodney." His death certificate lists his normal occupation as farmer.2,6 Carl Fields located his death certificate (indicating only that he had died in a automobile accident) several years before coming upon the news article that indicated a stabbing during an altercation prior to the fatal accident. Carl was aware of the family legend concering his death. The version Carl had heard was that he had died in Oklahoma in the parking lot of a bar (roadhouse) in Oklahoma from injuries from a fight. In addition, Carl Fields has a vague recollection of hearing or reading this event occurred in 1931 (which would have been during prohbition). This legend is inconsistent with information on his death certificate -- and somewhat inconsistent with the news article, although the news article seems closer to the family folklore. Before finding the news article (in May 2015), Carl suspected (incorrectly) the family folklore story might have developed from confusion with his nephew, Earl Casey, who died in what may have been a similar roadhouse altercation a few months later in 1936.2,7

The other person involved in the fight that led to the death was said to be Elmer Stowers, age 19, a son of a man also named Elmer Stowers. The initial sources that were located (e-mails by Bera Reeves from 2003) mention that a trial was held (or might have been held), but gives no further information (i.e., nothing about date, location, charges, or outcome). Later (in 2015), two (Batesville Guard) newspaper articles were located. These had been published contemporary with Earl's death. These provide more information concerning Earl's death. The fatal confrontation was apparently the last of multiple incidents involving these men (and some other family members). The other person involved in the incident apparently served a relatively short prison sentence.

Earl's wife was pregnant at the time of his death. He is said to have been looking forward to the child's birth. The child, a daughter, born after his death was named for him: Earline.

As indicated above, in family folklore, the manner of his death is sometimes confused with the death of one one of his uncles, Virgil Fields, who died in an automobile accident in Missouri the same year.8,9,2,10,11,12,13

Lavon Southard was also known as Nancy Bounds (her professional name). She was born circa June 1928 in Arkansas.3

Lavon Southard appeared on the census of 1930 at Norfolk, Baxter County, Arkansas.3

While she was growing up, her family lived in Rodney, Norfork, and Mountain Home, Arkansas.4

Lavon Southard has credited Maude Washingon Author (a “godmother”) as a major influence in her life as she grew up -- both in her fashion sense and in encouraging reading and education (which, in Bounds case, may have largely been self-education).4

She claimed to have left home to go out in the world on her own at age 14, going first to Springfield, Missouri. She worked there as a waitress and cosmetics clerk and claimed to eventually get a job singing on live broadcasts from a local radio station a few times each week.4

Lavon Southard married for the first time at age 15. Her husband was in the US Army Air Force, but his name is currently (as of September 2016) not known to the compiler of this information. The marriage may have taken place in or near Springfield, Greene County, Missouri, but the compiler has (as of September 2016) not yet been able to locate documentation of this marriage in the records on Ancestry.com or FamilySearch.org (these records are incomplete for some Missouri counties – the status of records for Greene County, which includes Springfield, is not known). After her husband was transferred, she found she was pregnant. She claimed to have returned to Arkansas (for at least a brief time) but kept the marriage secret.4

Lavon Southard later left Arkansas again, this time moving to Wichita, Kansas, where she had family nearby (and where her daughter was apparently born).4

When her husband returned home from overseas service, they moved to his home state of Minnestoa for a time (with their daughter). However, the marriage broke up after about 3 months and she and the child returned to Arkansas. She later returned to Minnesota briefly for divorce proceedings, then went back to Wichita.4

Lavon Southard married an unknown person.

Lavon Southard formed a small band consisting of her as lead singer backed by a piano, bass, drums, and saxophone. The initially performed in the Wichita area, but then landed jobs in Colorado. After the band broke up (partly because some members wanted to return to Wichita), she performed as a singer in nightclubs in Denver and Estes Park, Colorado, Chicago, and Boston. She also worked as a dancer, model, and actress during this time, appearing in several plays for a repertory summer stock theater company in Boston over three seasons.4

During this period she married a man named Carmen (--?--), who was her dance partner. They moved back to Kansas, where they performed as a dance team. She auditioned for Xavier Cugat and performed with his orchestra for a time (as a singer/dancer, presumably).4

After her marriage to the dancer ended, she purchased “some” Fred Astaire (francisied) Dance Studios in Kansas.4

Lavon Southard married US Air Force Colonel Robert S Bounds and moved to Omaha, Nebraska, when he was transferred there. Bored with being “just” a military officer’s wife, she looked into working for a local Omaha modeling school. She soon became a manager at the school. Later, she purchased the controlling interest in a competing school in Omaha, which eventually became her namesake Nancy Bounds Modeling School. For a time, her school operated out of a penthouse quarters in Omaha’s Fontenelle Hotel (this was probably in the 1960s, when the hotel was past its prime – although it had been Robert Kennedy’s Nebraska campaign headquarters during the 1968 election).4

Her marriage to Robert S Bounds ended when he was transferred and she did not want to give up career in Omaha.4

She was married to Mark Sconce for 29 years, although that fourth marriage eventually also ended in divorce. He was her business partner in the modeling school, Nancy Bounds International Modeling Agency, and Nancy Bounds Studios. The modeling school eventually had franchise operations in Omaha, Norfolk (Nebraska), and Kansas City.4

Lavon Southard died on 13 March 2007 at Omaha, Nebraska.5

In 2013, Omaha writer Leo Adam Biga posted an article written late in her life on the internet. The article (based on an interview with her) was probably first published in a local Omaha magazine in the early 2000s. In the 2013 introduction to the republished article, Biga wrote “… Bounds was a much photographed stylish woman whose entire career was built on image enhancement work with aspiring models and actors. She was a personality and celebrity whose all about town comings and goings were grist for the Omaha society mill pages. She frequently appeared on television too….For 40 years, Nancy Bounds was Omaha’s saucy arbiter and symbol for goods looks and social graces. The owner of a string of modeling/finishing schools bearing her name, she applied her tastemaker’s role as television host, magazine columnist, pageant director and self-improvement guru. This former model, singer, dancer and actress best embodied her own beauty ethos.” The article also mentioned her “resplendent Dundee home”, her large collection of fashionable clothing, a chauffeur-driven limo, and her “broad smile, sparkling eyes, and sultry voice.”.4

As indicated above, in 2013 a previously-published article was placed on the internet. The article had originally been published some years earlier, prior to the death of "Nancy Bounds". The article is clearly based on a detailed interview with her. Several items based on this article (and sourced to it) have been entered in the narration for her (above). However, the article (and presumably the interview it is based on) seems to have been deliberately intended to vague in many respects, such as dates, and names of some of her former husbands. There are also some inconsistencies in the overall timeline. For example, the article suggests "Nancy Bounds" was around 15 at the time of the Berlin Airlift, which began in mid-1948. However, since her name was listed in the 1930 census, she had to have been at least around 18 at that time (also, her surname was not "Bounds" in 1948, she didn't become "Ms Bounds" unitl she married the man who she lists as her third husband). Also, it is doubtful that evidence exists that she was related to Geroge Washington. Also, she was probably the next-to-youngest member of her family, not the youngest. Ms Bounds may be viewed as what is -- in literary circles -- sometimes called an unreliable narrator.

While there is a good deal of information in the article, it is likely that a good deal has been left out (and possibly some unreliable "information" has been included). Some of the inconsitencies are, of course, likely to have resulted from having to respond to interviewer questions about events that happened perhaps 50-60 years previously with little reflection before responding questions. For example, one can imagine that (during an interview in, say, the early 2000s) she could have confused her first husband participating in bombing raids over Berlin (perhaps in 1944 or 1945) with him participating in the Berlin Airlift (in 1947-48). It is also possible that some errors and/or inconistencies could have been introduced by the author of the article or during the editorial process. This is likely the case for where the article mentions Norfolk Arkansas, instead of the actualy name of Norfork. The town is near the location where the north fork of the White River falls into the main branch of the White River. Most of the course of the north fork of the White River is in Missouri. In that state, the river is known as the North Fork River in some places.4

The Carmania passenger list indicates: (1) the group traveled as steerage passengers; (2) they apparently entered the US with $350 among them (but there is some uncertainty about this – notations on the list suggest that Michael -- or Michel -- may have had other funds); (3) they had lived in Mariupol (Ekaterinoslav Gubernia) prior to leaving Russia; (4) their final destination in the US was Perth Amboy, New Jersey; and (5) they apparently intended to join a relative, Nathan Golosoff, Mendel’s brother, who is identified only as “Brother Segal” on the passenger list (Segal was the Americanized version of Nathan's wife’s maiden surname). Mendel’s occupation is listed as merchant, Michel’s as locksmith, Soria’s as tailoress, Ethel’s apparently as housewife, and the other two are listed as children. Nathan's home address at that time is listed only as “365”; the street name may not have been known or was omitted from the passenger list.2
