Linus Henry Baldwin was born on 8 March 1882 in Velpin, Indiana.1,3 His grave marker is said to give his birth date as 6 March 1882.4

He apparently served two enlistments, each of 3-year duration starting in January1907. There is a separate entry for each enlistment. The one-line “record” for the 1907 enlistment is on Line 46 of page 96 of the entries for 1906-07. The corresponding record for the 1910 enlistment is on Line 52 of page 106 of the entries for 1910.
He was apparently enlisted and discharged at Fort Riley Kansas in both tours of duty. Several items in the handwritten records are difficult to decipher, in part, because of the handwriting, and, in part, because cryptic abbreviations are used in several places. He seems to have been recorded as having blue eyes, dark hair, a ruddy complexion, and was 5 feet, 7 inches tall (in 1910, he was listed as 5 ft 6.5 inches in 1907). The remarks upon discharge seem to reflect excellent service.5

Linus Henry Baldwin seems to have appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Fort Riley Military Reservation, Kansas, enumerated 28 April 1910. The official date of that census was 15 April 1910. No details are given for a specific domicile (he presumably resided in some type of barracks). Linus Henry Baldwin was listed as age 27, single, able to speak English, able to read and write, and not attending school. Linus’s occupation was listed as soldier in the army. This seems to be the correct Linus H Baldwin, since the age, birth location, occupation (and, apparently, the army base he was stationed at) are all consistent with other information concerning him at this time. However, this census indicates he was born in Massachusetts and his parents were born in Rhode Island, all of which is inconsistent with other information (although the census does have the correct general area of the US for these items). These are likely mistakes in data entry on the census schedule, but they could be indications this census record is for a different individual with approximately the same name and approximately the same age.6

Linus Henry Baldwin married Ida May Fields, daughter of Lindsey Waters Fields and Martha Ann Tayloe, on 26 March 1917 in Searcy County, Arkansas. They are both listed as residents of Harriett, Arkansas. His age was listed as 34 and hers was listed as 30.7

Linus Henry Baldwin lived in 1918 at Harriett, Searcy County, Arkansas.1 He was a laborer (employed by L. W. Fields) in 1918 at Harriett, Searcy County, Arkansas.8

Linus Henry Baldwin appeared on the census of 1920 at Beaver, Searcy County, Arkansas.9 He was listed as a farmer, general farm, in the 1920 census.9

Linus Henry Baldwin and Ida May Fields appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Econtuchka Township, Seminole County, Oklahoma, enumerated 19 April 1930. Their ages were listed as 48 and 42, respectively, born in Indiana and Missouri, respectively, ages at first marriage were 32 and 23, respectively, both did not attend school the previous year, and both could read and write. The home was listed as rented for $25/month and not on a farm. No indication was listed as to whether or not a radio was present in the home. The official date of that census was 02 April 1930. Their children Wylo Dean Baldwin and Maxine Hazel Baldwin were listed as living with them. Ida May Fields's daughter Ruby Payne was also listed as living with them, along with Ida's brother, Cecil A Fields. All members of the household age 10 and over were listed as being able to read and write. All of the children 19 and younger were listed as attending school after September 1, 1929.10 Linus Henry Baldwin was working at loading gasoline at a tank car "rack" as a worker.10

Linus Henry Baldwin and Ida May Fields appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of at Econtuchka Township, at Seminole County, Oklahoma, enumerated 12 April 1940. The home was listed as owned, value listed but essentially illegible (it might be $85), and on a farm. The official date of that census was 01 April 1940. Their daughter Maxine Hazel Baldwin was listed as living with them, along with Ida May Fields's father, L. W. Fields, and her neice, Jurdine Blankenship. All household members were listed having lived in the same house on 1 Apr 1935. Linus was listed as age 58, married, born in Indiana, not attending school in March 1940, and having completed six years of schooling. He was listed as employed, not seeking work, and having worked 42 hours the week of 24-30 March. His occupation was listed as a farmer working on a farm on his own account (self employed). During 1939 he worked 52 weeks, earned $50, and did not have non-wage income in excess of $50. Ida was listed as age 54, married, born in Missouri, not attending school in March 1940, and having completed ten years of schooling. She was listed as doing housework, not employed for wages, and not seeking such work the week of 24-30 March. No occupation was listed for her. During 1939 she did not work for wages, had no wage earnings, and did not have non-wage income in excess of $50. The population schedule indicates a farm schedule was submitted for this household.11

Linus Henry Baldwin died on 4 April 1942 (11 PM) at Seminole, Oklahoma, at age 60. Death was from cardiovascular-renal disease, which he had suffered from for 3 years.4,3 He was buried at Highland Cemetery, Okemah, Okfuskee County, Oklahoma.4,3

Linus Henry Baldwin was described as: short height, medium build, blue eyes, brown hair on his World War I draft registration card.1

Linus Henry Baldwin's Social Security Number was 43-09-9894.2
