Gail Horton's name was listed as Gayle Horton in at least one source document.5 He was born on 23 February 1916 in Missouri.4,5

Gail Horton appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Sanger, Fresno County, California at 1307 A Street (rear), enumerated 12 April 1940. The home was listed as rented for $8 per month and not on a farm. The official date of that census was 01 April 1940. His parents, Albert Horton and Mary J (--?--) and his brother Basil Horton were also in the household. All household members were listed having lived on a farm in rural Miller County, Missouri on 1 Apr 1935. Gail was listed as age 24, single, born in Missouri, not attending school in March 1940, and having completed eight years of schooling. He was listed as employed, not seeking work, and having worked 84 hours(!) the week of 24-30 March. His occupation was listed as a farm hand on a ranch (private industry worker). During 1939 he worked 46 weeks, earned $600, and did not have non-wage income in excess of $50.5

Gail Horton married Lois Belle Fields, daughter of Henry Clarence Fields and Flora Collins, on 5 June 1941 at Carson City, Nevada.1

Gail Horton lived in 1942 at Las Vegas, Nevada.1 He was working as a laborer at Engineers Limited. In the early 1940s, he worked construction (at different times) on a project on Angel Island (in San Francisco Bay) and in Boulder City, Nevada. One (or both) of these locations may have been the Engineers Limited employment in 1942.1

Gail Horton was in military service between November 1942 and November 1945 in the US Army (working in bomb disposal -- USAAF?)1

Cecil Ambrose Fields and Gail Horton (and probably their families) both lived in Boulder City, Nevada, during the early years of the US involvement in World War II. They were working the construction of a pipeline to bring water from Lake Mead to a magnesium project in Henderson, Nevada. Later, Gail Horton was drafted and Cecil Ambrose Fields was said to have bought a grocery store in Boulder City, Nevada. He was said to have run the store until the war ended.6

Gail Horton lived in 1943 at Albany, Oregon.1 He lived in 1945 at Great Falls, Montana.1 He lived in 1945 at Yakima, Washington.1

Gail Horton lived in November 1945 at Sanger, Fresno County, California, (probably as a civilian, at that point).1

Gail Horton was a cement worker circa 1948.1

Gail Horton lived in 1968 at Sanger, Fresno County, California.2

Gail Horton died on 29 November 1986 in Califronia at age 70.4 He was buried at Sanger Cemetery, Sanger, Fresno County, California.4

Margaret Jane Pease was apparently most commonly known as Jane.2,3 She was born on 24 August 1901 at Blandville, Ballard County, Kentucky.1,4

Margaret Jane Pease married Allen Francis Johnson, son of Henry Wood Johnson and Ruth Ellen Rankin, on 15 March 1918 in Independence County, Arkansas.5

Margaret Jane Pease and Allen Francis Johnson appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Pleasant Plains, Independence County, Arkansas, enumerated 21 January 1920. The home was listed as being on a farm that was rented. The official date of that census was 01 Janurary 1920. Their son Maurice Johnson was listed as living with them, Both adult members of the household were listed as being able to read and write.3

Margaret Jane Pease was member of the Pleasant Plains Church of Christ.1

Margaret Jane Pease appeared on the census of 1930 at Pleasant Plains, Independence County, Arkansas.6 She was listed as a postmaster, US Post Office, in the 1930 census.6,1

Margaret Jane Pease and Allen Francis Johnson appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Pleasant Plains, Independence County, Arkansas, enumerated 24 April 1940. The home was listed as owned, valued at $800, and on a farm. The official date of that census was 01 April 1940. Their son Maurice Johnson was listed as living with them. All adult household members were listed having lived in the same house on 1 Apr 1935 (which was stated to be on a farm). Allen Francis Johnson and Margaret Jane Pease were listed as ages 42 and 38, respectively, both not attending school in March 1940, Allen having completed 7 years of schooling and Margaret having completed 9 years of schooling. Allen was listed as having been born in Arkansas and Margaret was listed as having been born in Kentucky. Allen was listed as employed, not seeking work, and had worked 48 hours the week of 24-30 March. His occupation was listed as the operator of a service station and sandwich shop. He worked 52 weeks in 1939, earned $1000 in wages and had other income (other than wages and salary) in excess of $50. Margaret is listed as doing housework, not employed for wages, and not seeking such employment the week of 24-30 March. No 1939 wage income was reported for her and she did not have non-wage income in excess of $50 in 1939. The population schedule indicates that a farm schedule was not filed for this household. This sheet of the census schedule lists both the town of Pleasant Plains and Fairview Township, suggesting the possibility that some households on the page could be outside the city limits.7

Margaret Jane Pease probably died on 31 December 1997 at Walnut Ridge, Lawrence County, Kentucky. However, the year listed on her grave marker is 1977 (this is probably an error, since the Social Security death index seems to support the 1997 date). She died in a nursing home. She may have moved to Walnut Ridge, from Newport, Arkansas, only shortly prior to her death. Her Social Security death index entry suggests her last benefit was paid to Newport and her obituary indicates her surviving daughter Juanita, living in Walnut Ridge, was "formerly of Newport."1,4 She was buried at Pleasant Plains Cemetery, Pleasant Plains, Independence County, Arkansas.1

Her obiturary indicated she was survived by her daughter, Juanita Blagg, 5 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.1

Her Social Security Number was 548-34-8559, issued in California before 1951 (last benefit paid to Newport, Jackson County, Arkansas) at Newport, Jackson County, Arkansas.4

Opal Henry Johnson died on 12 August 1983 (6:45pm) at Merced Community Medical Center, Merced, Merced County, California, at age 73.5,2,3 He was buried at Merced District Cemetery, Merced, Merced County, California. His death certificate indicates he died from gastric contents, aspiration asphyxiation, apparently triggered by a pulmonary embolism (an autopsy was performed). His address at the time of his death was listed as 3947 Ida Street, Merced California (which was also listed as the address of his daughter, Glenda Faulkner, the informant on the death certificate). His occupation (or perhaps former occupation, given his age at death) was listed as foreman, California Canners and Growers, in the food processing industry (California Canners and Growers, which apparenlty went bankrupt in the mid-1980s and no longer exists, it seems to have operated faciilities at several locations in California). Thus it is unclear if he worked for them in Merced or at another location and moved to Merced later in his life.3

Opal Henry Johnson's Social Security Number was 568-34-3899, issued in Califronia before 1951 (last benefit was in Merced, Merced County, California.)5,2,3

George A. Payne was born circa 1873 in Ohio (his daughter's death certificate lists the location of his birth as Florida).2

George A. Payne married Ida May Fields, daughter of Lindsey Waters Fields and Martha Ann Tayloe, on 28 October 1909 at Mountain Grove, Wright County, Missouri.1

George A. Payne and Ida May Fields appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Palestine, Anderson County, Texas at 9 Combination Street, enumerated 18 April 1910. They were listed as "roomers" in the household of L. J. Chamberlin. The residence was listed as not on a farm. The home was owned with no mortgage. Six others lived in the household: L. J. Chamberlin, four of her relatives, and a servant (a cook). The official date of that census was 15 April 1910. George A. Payne and Ida May Fields were listed as ages 37 and 23, respectively, born in Ohio and Missouri, respectively, both married (first marriage for both), and having been married for 6 months. The birth place of George A. Payne's parents was listed as only "United States," suggesting the person providing information to the census taker was unaware of where his parents had been born. Both were listed as being able to read, write, and speak English. George A. Payne was listed as being employed as a clerk on a steam rail road. He was employed on the date of the census and reported zero weeks of unemployment during 1909. Ida May Fields was listed as having no children, living or dead, as of the date of the census.2

Her first name was most often spelled Rubye. Ruby Payne was born on 22 May 1911 in Missouri.3,4

Ruby Payne appeared on the census of 1920 at Beaver, Searcy County, Arkansas.5

Ruby Payne appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Econtuchka Township, Seminole County, Oklahoma in the household of her mother, Ida May Fields, and stepfather, Linus Henry Baldwin. She was listed as age 19, single, attended school, able to read and write, born in Missouri, and with no occupation listed.6

Ruby Payne married Merwin Eberle, son of W. S. Eberle and Gertrude Merwin, on 28 August 1941 at St. John's Church, 3125 Classen Blvd, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma County, Oklahoma. The application for their marriage license gives his age as 35 and his address as 712 NW 41st Street, Oklahoma County, Oklahoma. The application gives her age as 28 and her address as 512 NW 9th Street, Oklahoma County, Oklahoma. The certificate of marriage further identified the church as Protestent Episcopal and stated the marriage was performed by Paul R Palmer, Rector. The certificate indicated the marriage was performed in the presence of Elmer Dowler and Marnelyn Rene Wilson (?)7,8

Ruby Payne lived in April 1942 at 651 Wright Building, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.9

Ruby Payne (Rubye Eberle) lived in June 1976 at Pasadena, California.10

Ruby Payne lived in January 1989 at LaVerne, Califronia.11 Another address listed for Ruby Payne was at 4095 Fruit Street, La Verne, California.4

Ruby Payne died on 21 February 1999 at Pomona Valley Hospital, 1498 N. Garey Avenue, Pomona, Los Angeles County, California, at age 87. She died of congestive heart failure due to arteriosclerotic heart disease.3,2 She was cremated and her ashes deposited in the sea off the coast of Los Angeles County (arranged by the Neptune Society of Burbank, California). Her usual occupation (listed on her death certificate) was property management. Her employer (or previous employer) seems to have been listed as Trustor Realtor. Her death certificate mentioned she had 15 years of schooling. Her residence was listed as 4095 N. Fruit Street, La Verne, Los Angeles County, Califonia 91750. She had lived in Los Angeles County for 53 years.2

Early research incorrectly associated her with a different person whose married name was Ruby Eberle and who was recorded as liveing in central Oklahoma in the 1940 census. This "other" Ruby was married to a Herman Eberle. It appears that both women named Ruby Eberle later moved to Southern California with their families.

Ruby Payne's Social Security Number was 442-14-9529, issued in Oklahoma before 1951 (last residence was La Verne, Los Angeles County, California).3

She was born on 2 August 1918 at Marshall, Arkansas, (based on her grave marker; her death certificate puts her date of birth as 12 Aug 1918, and lists only Arkansas for the birthplace).1,3

Wylo Dean Baldwin died on 2 December 1935 at Seminole, Oklahoma, at age 17 (based on her grave marker; her death certificate lists her date of death as 1 Dec 1936, at 6 PM).1,3 She was buried at Highland Cemetery, Okemah, Okfuskee County, Oklahoma. Her death certificate lists her cause of death as pneumonia, with a contributory cause of "organic heart (mitral regurgitation)". The death certificate lists her occupation as "schoolgirl". It lists "city" of death as Seminole (followed by a number, "6758" whose signifigance is not known, but "67" seems to a numeric designation for Seminole County). This may indicate a mailing address (i.e., the nearest mailing address), since it also seems to provide "coordinates" for a location outside of town, "mile W, 1/2 So". These "coordinates" differ somewhat from those listed on the death certificate of her father, L. H. Baldwin, who died in 1942. The informant on the death certificate is Ruby Payne, her half sister (no address listed).1,3

He was known Moshe Leib Segal within his family after coming to the United States. Prior to coming to the US, the family name was Ziegelneitski (sometimes with alternative spellings such as Ziegelneitsky or Tzieglneithsky).19 Moses Segal's date of birth is generally listed as on 20 September 1848 in Lithuania, which was then part of the Russian Empire. In this context,"Lithuania" may refer to regions that were once part of historic Lithuania of the 1600s and 1700s, which was much larger than the smaller country with that name in the 20th century and the early 21st century.18,19

Moses Segal immigrated circa 1867 to Berdjansk, Russia, which is on the north shore of the Sea of Azov -- part of the Russian Empire; it is now in Ukraine, but was in Taurdia Gubernia of Russia in the late 1800s.19

Moshe Leib Segal married Reisel Golosoff, daughter of Leo Golosoff and Ida Trivus, circa 1867 probably in or near Berdjansk, Russia, (and probably after Moses had immigrated to the Berdjansk region).19,20

His occupation in Russia prior to immigration has been described as a grocer in one source. However, a second source characterized it as owning a store near the waterfront that sold all types of supplies to boats and to seamen before 1906.21

Moses Segal entered the United States at New York, New York, on 3 March 1906 as part of an extended family consisting of Moses Segal, Reisel Golosoff, Harry Segal, Hannah Yowell, Constant Segal, Nathan Golosoff, Anna Segal and Jeannette Golosoff. They traveled on board the SS Chemintz, which was operated by the North German (Nord Deutsch) Lloyd line. They had sailed from Bremen, Germany on 17 February 1906. The Chemnitz passenger list indicates: (1) the group traveled as second class passengers; (2) they entered the US with $713 among them; (3) their final destination in the US was Perth Amboy, New Jersey; and (4) they intended to join a relative, Joseph Slobodien, a brother-in-law of Moses Segal, who lived in Perth Amboy, New Jersey.22 Moses Segal was listed as a merchant on the ship passenger list upon his entry to the United States.22

Moses Segal's lived in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, United States, after 1908. Circa 1910 he lived at 293 Hall Avenue (apparently above a dry goods store he operated at that time). In 1912 his residence was listed as 145 Smith Street (perhaps above the Slobodien Shoe Store). In 1912, he was listed as operating two different stores: a dry goods store at 293 Hall Avenue and apparently a store selling suits at 288 Smith Street, both in Perth Amboy.21,23,5

Moshe Leib Segal was listed as the contact in the United States when Rachel Golosoff, Sophia Slatkoff, Anna Slatkoff and Samuel Philip Slatkoff entered the United States on on 27 August 1912.24

Moses Segal's residence seems to have been listed as 419 Division Street, Perth Amboy, in 1913 and 415 Division Street in 1916. Moses Segal's residence was listed as 174 Broad Street, Perth Amboy in 1914 and 1915.

Moses Segal appeared on the New Jersey state census of 1915 at 419? Division Street (3rd Ward), Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.16 He was listed as a landlord in the 1915 New Jersey state census in 1915.16 He lived in 1916 at 415 Division Street, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.

In 1917 Moses Segal lived at 442 Amboy Avenue, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey. This location was probably in an apartment over the dry goods store operated by his sons, Harry and Constant Segal, about this time (the store address was often listed as 440-444 Amboy Avenue -- Harry seems to have sold out to Constant around 1918; Constant continued to operate the store into the 1950s).25

Between 1918 and 1920 Moses Segal lived at 164 Broad Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.

Moses Segal and Reisel Golosoff were apparently missed in the United States census of 1920.

Between 1921 and 1926 Moses Segal lived at 328 Elm Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.

Moses Segal died on 20 September 1926 at about 6:30 PM at 328 Elm Street, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey, at age 78.18,17,26 He was buried at Woodbridge (Perth Amboy), Middlesex County, New Jersey. His obituary indicated he died at home. He was survived by four sons, two daughters, twenty-one grandchildren, and three great-grandchilden, and was a member of Sharri Tefiloh.18,26 He was listed as a retired merchant on his death certificate.18

Personal recollections of Moses Segal and Reisel Golosoff are described in an end note.27
