Freda Golosoff was born on 16 September 1914 in New Jersey (one source gives her date of birth as 6 Sep 1917).4,5

Freda Golosoff appeared on the New Jersey state census of 1915 at 174 Broad Street (Ward 3), Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.6

Nathan Golosoff and Anna Segal and their daughters Freda Golosoff, Jennette Golosoff, Rose Golosoff and Sadie Golosoff were apparently not recorded in the 1920 US census. They probably lived at either 112 Madison Avenue or 148 Madison Avenue, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey, at the time of the 1920 census. The above two candidate addresses are based on addresses listed for Nathan Golosoff in the 1920 and 1921 Perth Amboy city directories (the addresses of the entire family can probably be inferred from Nathan's address listed in city directories published between 1905 and the mid-1930s).7

Freda Golosoff appeared on the census of 1930 at 287 Smith Street, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.3

Circa 1935 Freda Golosoff lived at 111 Brighton Avenue, Perth Amboy, New Jersey. Her occupation was listed as a saleswoman.2

Between c1936 and c1951 Freda Golosoff primarily lived at 272 Market Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.

Freda Golosoff appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey in the household of her parents, Nathan Golosoff and Anna Segal, at 272 Market Street. She was listed as: age 25, single, did not attend school during March 1940, had completed four years of high school, born in New Jersey, lived in same house on 1 Apr 1935, was employed, worked 40 hours the week of March 24-30 1940, zero weeks of unemployment immediately prior to 1 Apr 1940; occupation was listed as milliner, listed as a private industry worker (but no industry or business listed). In 1939 she worked 52 weeks, earned $900, and did not have income in excess of $50 from sources other than wages or salary.8

Freda Golosoff married Coleman Louis Goff circa 1942.9 Circa 1942 Freda Golosoff's occupation was listed as a clerk at Perth Amboy, New Jersey.10

Circa 1951 Freda Golosoff and Coleman Louis Goff lived at Beaver Falls, Pensylvania.11

Circa 1952 Freda Golosoff and Coleman Louis Goff lived at Columbus, Ohio.12

Between c1952 and c1968 Freda Golosoff and Coleman Louis Goff lived in the Sacremento, California area. Circa 1955-1960, she lived at 5309 Monalee Avenue, in the River Park area of the city. After that, they lived on Castillija Court, in Carmichael California until Freda's death. Coleman lived at that residence for a time after her death.13

Later in her life, after her youngest child started school, she began teaching millinary techniques at a community college.14

Freda Golosoff died on 7 December 1968 at Sacramento, California, at age 54.4,5

Notes and Observations:

Fourth child of Nuna and Nissim Golosoff. Frieda studied millinery at a fashion school and later taught millinery in high school. After adopting Natalie they moved to Sacramento, California where her husband Coleman had obtained employment for the State of California as an architectural draftsman. (As related by her sister Sadie Gumenik).4

Her given name was sometimes spelled Frieda. Two editions of the Perth Amboy city directory listed a middle inital "J." for her. No other as-yet identified sources suggest she had a middle name. At least two sources give her birth year as 1917, one of them listing it as 6 September.10,15,5

Freda Golosoff's Social Security Number was 138-18-5258.5

Sonia Segal was born in July 1869 in Russia according to the 1915 New Jersey state census (most sources list -- or suggest -- only the year 1870 or circa 1870; it is only the 1915 New Jersey Census that indicates she was born July 1869).1,4,5,6,7

Sonia Segal married Samuel Koltunoff circa 1890 in Russia.1,8

Sonia Segal immigrated in 1906 to the United States.5,3

Sophia Segal entered the United States at New York, New York, (or possibly docks in Hoboken, New Jersey, which is part of New York harbor) on 24 February 1906 together with Ezra Mehaloff, Lucy Mehaloff, Lillian Mehaloff, Theodore Herzl Mehaloff, Freidal Segal, Sophia Segal, Ester Koltinoff and Annie Koltinoff. Their names listed on the passenger manifest as: Faund, Freide, Leibon, Lesbon, and Theador Michalowski and Schino, Ester, and Chais Kohlonan (as initially transcribed by Ancestry.com). They traveled on board the S.S. Breslau, which was operated by the North German Lloyd line. They had sailed from Bremen, Germany on 10 Feb 1906. The Breslau passenger list indicates: (1) the group traveled as second class passengers; (2) they apparently entered the US with $200 among them ($100 for each family); (3) they had lived in Berdyansk (Taurdia Guberniya) prior to leaving Russia; (4) their final destination in the US was Perth Amboy, New Jersey; and (5) they apparently intended to join a relative, Joseph Slobodien, a uncle, by marriage, of Friedal and Sonia. Joseph Slobodien lived in Perth Amboy, New Jersey; his home address at that time is listed as 127 Smith Street, Perth Amboy. Ezak Mehaloff’s occupation is recorded in the passenger list as locksmith. Sonia’s husband did not enter the US with the rest of his family. There is a cryptic (crossed-out) entry near the end of one of the sheets of paper making up the passenger list that initially suggested he may have initially been scheduled to come with the others, but did not board the ship. However, it is now believed this crossed out entry was the begining of an entry for Sonia, which was crossed out in order to be able to place her name at the beginning of a later page that contained enough room on it to list her entire family on the same sheet.9,10

In 1907 Sonia Segal lived at 657 State Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey, and operated a dry goods store at the same address (the living quarters were probably in an apartment over or behind the store).11

Sonia Segal married Harry Goldstein, son of Pearl (--?--), in 1909 at New Jersey.1,2,3,12

Sonia Segal appeared on the census of 1910 at Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.2

In 1912 Sonia Segal operated a dry goods store at 407 State Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.13 In 1915 Sonia Segal operated a cigar store at 343 Smith Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey. She also lived at this address at this time.14

Sonia Segal appeared on the New Jersey state census of 1915 at Perth Amboy, 5th Ward, Middlesex County, New Jersey.15

Between c1916 and c1918, Sonia Segal operated a dry goods store at 679 State Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.16 In 1918 Sonia Segal lived at 164 Broad Street, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.17

Sonia Segal and Harry Goldstein appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey at 99 Madison Avenue, enumerated 12 January 1920. The home was listed as owned and mortgaged. The official date of that census was 01 January 1920. Their daughter Dorothy Goldstein was listed as living with them, along with Ester Koltinoff and Annie Koltinoff, Sonia's daughters from her first marriage, both listed as single and as step-daughters of the head of household. All of the members of the household were listed as being able to read and write. Dorothy was listed as attending school after September 1, 1919.3 Sonia Segal was listed as being a naturalized citizen in the 1920 census (possibly as the result of her marriage to Harry Goldman, who was also listed a being a naturalized citizen).3

Sonia Segal appeared on the census of 1930 at 11 Yates Avenue, Newark, Essex County, New Jersey.5

Sonia Segal is believed to have died on 18 November 1935 at age 66.18 She was buried at Congregation Shari Tephalo/Congregation Beth Mordecai Cemeteries, Perth Amboy, New Jersey. The "Sophia Goldstein" in this burial plot is believed to be the family member of interest here. However, there is some uncertaintly, since the year of death on the grave marker (1935) is very different from the year listed in the Segal Family History book (1955), but that could be a typo in the book.18

Notes and Observations: between c1910 and c1917, the 1910 census and two editions of the Perth Amboy city directory (1916 and 1917) listed Sonia Segal as living at 679 State Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey, as did the 1915 New Jersey state census. In addition, in 1916 and 1917, Sonia Segal was listed as operating a dry goods store at that same address (the living quarters at 679 State Street may have been above a store). However, during this same period, she was listed as living at 100 Commerce Street in Perth Amboy in 1912, and at 343 Smith Street in Perth Amboy in 1915. The reasons for what appear to be back-and-forth moves are unclear, but she and her husband (her second husband) seem to have been operating at least two separate businesses in Perth Amboy in that era. The apparent changes in residences may have somehow been related to changing needs in supporting these businesses.
