Henry William Wood was born on 7 March 1795.1,2

Henry William Wood married Sarah Freeman, daughter of Aaron Posey Freeman and Alabeth Ball, before 1829 at Buncombe County, North Carolina.1,3,4

Henry William Wood is said to have had a "favorite" named Daniel Ledbetter. Daniel Ledbetter married a full-blood Cherokee and went from North Carolina to the Indian Territory about 1830. Daniel Ledbetter is said to have been killed while trying to keep two indians from fighting. In this context "favorite" could possibly mean "friend" or "associate," or it could be that the intent was "favorite cousin" or "favorite relative" and a word was inadvertently omitted.5,6

Henry William Wood appeared on the census of 1830 at Buncombe County, North Carolina.1

Part of the bed of a wagon owned by Henry W. Wood was used to make a coffin for use in the burial of James Freeman circa 1830s at Mt. Ararat Cemetery, in what is now Douglas County, Missouri.7,8,2

The Freeman/Johnson family tradition indicates Aaron Posey Freeman first came to the Ozarks, traveling down Indian Creek (and named it, for the Indian huts found along the creek) to where it enters the North Fork River (now in Douglas County -- Douglas County was formed from Ozark County in 1857; Ozark County had, in turn, been formed from Taney County in 1841). He came with two sons-in-law, William Clinton and Henry W. Wood. The Indians who had previously lived on the North Fork and on Indian Creek are said to have been the Delaware (it is unclear from the brief narrative if the indians had lived in the area and had moved, or if the huts were, in effect, hunting camps, that were used only at certain times during the year). Another tribe is said to have lived on a creek about 35 miles northwest called Jack's Fork (the Moses Johnson memoir identifies this second tribe as Seminoles, but they were more likely Shawnee).

The Wood family tradition (in the 1959 addendum to the published version of the Moses Johnson memoir titled "History") is generally consistent, but differs in some details. In this "Wood" version, the Wood family, of English descent, first migrated from North Carolina in 1839, first settling on the Meremac River in what later became St. Louis County. In the spring of 1840, Henry W. Wood, and "a friend, Posey Freeman, explored the North Fork (River) hills in search of land" where they could settle permanently. They returned to the "Meremac colony", loaded their families onto ox carts, and returned to the North Fork hills. This was a 25-day trip over ridges, hollows, and rivers. They are said to have pitched their first camp on the North Fork on March 10, 1840 (this date seems to refer to the return trip with families, but it might also refer to the initial exploration trip). This "Wood Family" version does not mention William Clinton and does not mention that the three men were related by marriages.5,6

Henry William Wood appeared on the census of 1840 at Taney County, Missouri.1

According to Moses Johnson: "In the early days of the Ozarks, the land was not considered worth entering unless it was best bottom on the creeks. ... Henry Wood, one of the first settlers of the Ozarks, was living on a selected piece of land where he intended to make his home, but the land was still government land and subject to entry. At the sun one evening (sundown?), one of his (Henry's) friends notified him that a man had started to Springfield, Missouri to enter the land that he (Henry) was living on. Then he got out one of his horses and borrowed some money that night, mounted his favorite horse (Barber) early the next morning, rode to Springfield, entered his land, then mounted the same horse and came back to a large spring about 5 miles east of Springfield to stay overnight. The travel amounted to about 90 miles that day. He (had) met the other man at the foot of the stairway as he (Henry) left the land office. The is the largest day's ride that we have any history of in the rough of this country." (The earliest land record for Henry Wood in the government land office computer data base.)8,2

Notes and Observations: Andrew Jackson Freeman of Carter County, Missouri, is said to have stated that Alabeth Ball's maiden name was Crabgrass and that [she?] was called Dolly. Based on other sources (such as the various depositions before the Dawes Commission circa 1903), this "Crabgrass" might refer to Andrew Jackson Freeman's mother or grandmother. This statement in Moses Johnson's memoir has the additional signifigance in that it suggests a relationship (kinship) between Alabeth Ball (called A. J. Freeman by Moses Johnson) and the Aaron Freeman family.3,4

James Freeman died circa 1830.5 He was buried circa 1830s at Mt. Ararat Cemetery, in what is now Douglas County, Missouri. He is said to be the first person buried in that cemetery and his burial location is marked by only a rock (not engraved). It is said that his friends cut a large pine tree and "dug a coffin out of it" (apparently a section of the trunk of the tree was hollowed out to form the coffin). Part of the bed of a wagon that belonged to Henry W. Wood was used to make a lid for the coffin. Carl Fields visited this cemetery in July 2000. It contains several graves that appear to be marked only by beach-ball-sized rocks. Most of these are in the southernmost (lower-elevation) portion of the cemetery.6,7,8

William Clinton was born circa 1790 at South Carolina.2,3

William Clinton married Elizabeth A. Freeman, daughter of Aaron Posey Freeman and Alabeth Ball, on 3 March 1834 at Crawford County, Missouri.1,2

This "Wood Family" version does not mention William Clinton and does not mention that the three men were related by marriages.4,5

Circa spring 1840, William Clinton settled at a spring on the west side of the North Fork River, near the mouth of Indian Creek. This area is now in Douglas County, Missouri, but in 1840 it was part of Taney County.4,5

William Clinton appeared on the census of 1840 at Taney County, Missouri.2
