Thomas Dodson was born on 14 May 1837 at Herman, Gasconade County, Missouri.11

Thomas Dodson appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Crawford Township, Osage County, Missouri, in the household of his mother, Matilda Shockley.7

Thomas Dodson served in the military between 1861 and 1864 in Company K, 26th Missouri Infantry (volunteers). At least one record associated with his military service indicates his residence prior to entering the army was Bayless Creek, Gasconade County, Missouri, and that he was mustered into service at New Madrid, Missouri. The Bayless Creek, Gasconade County location differs from any residence location listed by his two brothers, Uriah and Isiah, who served in the same military unit. However, the summary of detailed service for his regiment (given several paragraphs below) indicates they were at or near New Madrid during portions of Febryary and March 1862.1 He was a farmer at the time of his entry into the military in 1862.12

His military service record indicated that on 13 May 1862 he was reported for sleeping on duty.13

Thomas Dodson was promoted to corporal circa September 1862.14

Thomas Dodson fought in the battles of Corinth and Vicksburg at Mississippi circa June 1863.15

Thomas Dodson was on furlough (possibly more than 30 days) circa August 1863 (this would have been after the fall of Vicksburg, Mississippi, a campaign his unit participated in). Much of this furlough was spent in Osage County, Missouri. He was ill during part of this furlough.16

Thomas Dodson applied for a Civil War pension 2 September 1864 in Missouri. There is some confusion on this issue, however, because other records indicate he was "mustered out" (of Company I) in August 1865. August 1865 may have been the date the unit was inactivated and his "muster out" was done "on paper" with him still being carried on the regimental rolls as being inactive due to his wound (that is, word might not have reached his regiment -- out in the field -- that he had been discharged from a hospital; there is, however, a small possibility there could have been two men named Thomas Dodson in the regiment).

As the war progressed, the number of men in the regiment decreased due to casualties, since few, if any, were replaced (there seems to have been a tendency to form new regiments, rather than use replacements to bring existing regiments up to strength). Apparently, to avoid having extremely under-strength companies, the number of companies in the regiment was decreased (with some of them deactivated) as the war went on. Dodson seems to have been reassigned from Company K to Company I at some point, possibly in conjunction with consolidation of units within the regiment.

At least one regimental history exists for the 26th Missouri Volunteer Infantry Regiment, mostly in the form of memoirs of one of the senior officers (with shorter memoir-like sketches from a few others who served in the regiment). Dodson is not mentioned in the book, but it provides some insight into the types of experiences he would have had during the time he was on active duty.1,17

Thomas Dodson was wounded in the left forearm (gunshot wound) on 25 November 1864 at Mission Ridge, near Chattanooga, Tennessee. A casualty sheet in his service record indicates he was wounded at a location called something like "Tunnill Hil". This is probably Tunnel Hill, which was at the northern end of Mission or Missionary Ridge (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Missionary_Ridge : accessed 20 Aug 2013). There is some confusion about where the 26th Missouri Infantry Volunteers were in this battle. Some internet accounts indicate they were attached to the 17th Corps (which attacked near Tunnel Hill, and would seem consistent with the casualty report) and some say they were with the 15th Corps (which attacked more toward the center of the ridge). The regimental history (described below) is unclear, but the discussion of the events in the rifle pits would seem more consistent with the attack point being closer to the center of the ridge.

A standard reference work gives the following information for this Civil War military unit, which saw a great deal of action during the conflict (the remainder of this paragraph and the immediately-following five paragraphs quote -- with minor changes -- the Dyer volume cited below): The 26th Missouri Infantry was organized from recruits across the state of Missouri, September through December 1861 and mustered in for three years service under the command of Colonel George Boardman Boomer.

The regiment was attached to the Department of the Missouri to February 1862. 2nd Brigade, 2nd Division, Army of the Mississippi, to April 1862. 1st Brigade, 3rd Division, Army of the Mississippi, to November 1862. 3rd Brigade, 7th Division, Left Wing, XIII Corps, Department of the Tennessee, to December 1862. 3rd Brigade, 7th Division, XVI Corps, to January 1863. 3rd Brigade, 7th Division, XVII Corps, to September 1863. 3rd Brigade, 2nd Division, XVII Corps, to December 1863. 3rd Brigade, 3rd Division, XV Corps, to August 1864. 2nd Brigade, 3rd Division, XV Corps, to April 1865. 3rd Brigade, 2nd Division, XV Corps, to August 1865.

The regiment included two Independent Sharpshooters (ISS) companies: Company A formerly "Company A, Holman's Independent Battalion of Sharpshooters" and Company B (Captain John Welker) formerly "Company A, Birge's Western Sharpshooters". Company A was armed with Sharps carbines and Company B was armed (at least initially) with Dimick long rifles. These independent sharpshooters companies were used as dedicated skirmishing units and as snipers in static combat situations.

Companies A, B, C, D, E, F, and G mustered out of service November 4, 1864, to January 9, 1865. The remainder of the regiment mustered out August 13, 1865.

Casualties -- The regiment lost a total of 303 men during service; 6 officers and 112 enlisted men killed or mortally wounded, 2 officers and 183 enlisted men died of disease.

Thomas Dodson was on leave during August 1863, the time period when the unit was said (above) to be "at Vicksburg". He was, of course, no longer with the unit after being wounded on November 25, 1864. The detailed list of movements and battles indicates the unit "marched" from Memphis to Chattanooga between Oct 3 and Nov 19, 1863. However, it also mentions operations on the Memphis and Charleston Railroad during this same period (October 20-29, 1864). It is possible that rail transportation was used for a portion of the trip from Memphis to Chattanooga.18,6,19

Thomas Dodson lived in 1865 at Linn, Osage County, Missouri.20

Thomas Dodson married Arah Ann Davidella Fields, daughter of William Charles Fields and Eira Keziah Jarman, on 14 June 1865 in Osage County, Missouri. (The date of this marriage is listed as 22 Jan 1865 on one document in a Civil War pension file).21,22,23,24

This census is unique in that month and year of birth were requested for each individual, in addiiton to age at the official census date. Their children John R. Thomas and Arah were listed as being ages 63 and 53, respectively, born May 1837 and September 1847, respectively, both born in Tennessee, and both married for 31 years.
