Herman David Bob was born on 8 October 1882 in Russia.3,5 One source places the location of his birth as Poland. Others list him as born in New York.

Herman David Bob immigrated in 1894 to the United States.6

Herman David Bob married Sadie Slobodien, daughter of Joseph Slobodien and Fannie Ziegelnietski, on 3 June 1906 at Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.1

Herman David Bob appeared on the census of 1910 at 439 Jefferson Avenue, Brooklyn, Kings County, New York.7 He was listed as a manufacturer, shirts, in the 1910 census.7

Herman David Bob and Sadie Slobodien appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Brooklyn, Kings County, New York at 1703 Avenue K, enumerated 19 February 1920. The home was listed as owned (unknown if it was mortgaged). The official date of that census was 01 January 1920. Their children Madeline E Bob and Irving Jay Bobb were listed as living with them, along with Elizabeth Keane, a private nurse, and Katherine Syrak, a servant, both listed as single. All of the adult members of the household were listed as being able to read and write. Both children were listed as attending school after September 1, 1919.2 Herman David Bob was listed as a manufacturer (and an employer), shirts, in the 1920 census.2

Herman David Bob appeared on the census of 1930 at 1703 Avenue K, Brooklyn, Kings County, New York.6

Herman David Bob and Sadie Slobodien appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of the Borough of Brooklyn (New York City), Kings County, New York at the Granada Hotel, enumerated 2 April 1940. The home was listed as rented, but no monthly rental amount is given. The official date of that census was 01 April 1940. A notation on the sheet is apparently intended to indicate all household members were listed having lived in the same place on 1 Apr 1935 (as, indeed, was everyone on that sheet of the census schedule, which invites a bit of skepticism). Herman David Bob and Sadie Slobodien were listed as ages 57 and 53, respectively, both not attending school in March 1940. Herman is listed as having completed 1 year of formal schooling, born in Poland, and being a naturalized citizen. Sadie is listed as having completed 4 years of high school, born in Russia, and being a naturalized citizen. Herman was listed as working 48 hours the week of 24-30. His occupation was listed as an executive in the shirt manufacturing industry as a private industry worker. He is listed as having been employed for 52 weeks in 1939 and had salary in excess of $5000. He is listed as having other (non-wage) income in excess of $50. Sadie was listed as doing housework and not working for wages or seeking such work. No occupation or 1939 wage income is listed for her, but she is listed as having non-wage income in excess of $50.

The census schedule does not seem to give the street address of the Granada Hotel. However, a brief Internet search indicated it was at 268 Ashland Place at or near the intersection of Ashland and Lafayette Avenue (and across the street from the Brooklyn Academy of Music). A few web sites containing information about the hotel were located in early August 2012, including: (http://easybeinggreene.wordpress.com/2007/10/22/past-uncovered-the-hotel-granada : accessed 4 August 2012 by Carl Fields). The 15- or 16-storey-tall hotel apparently had both apartments for long-term rentals and transient rooms and suites (baseball teams visiting Brooklyn to play the Dodgers are said to have sometimes stayed there in the 1930s and 1940s). It is unclear if the Bob family household had a longer-term apartment, or if they were there for only a short stay at the time of the census. The building was completed around 1927 and demolished in 1994.8

Herman David Bob died on 9 September 1941 at his home at 41 5th Avenue, Manhattan, New York, New York, at age 58. An obituary indicated he died after a long illness. His death certificate indicated he was treated by his personal physician (who signed the death certificate) from 1 Jan 1941 until the date of his death (the exact cause of most deaths in New York at that this time was apparently recorded only in a confidential medical report that is not included with copies of the death certificate).4,3,9,5 He was buried at Mount Lebanon Cemetery, Glendale, Queens County, New York. His obituary indicated he was president of the H. D. Bob Company, shirt manufacturers. The address of the company was listed as 261 5th Avenue, Manhattan. He was said to be a former trustee of the Federation of Jewish Charities and a former vice presiednt of the Brooklyn Branch of the federation; a former trustee of the Jewish Hospital in Brooklyn; and a former trustee of the Union Temple of Brooklyn.4,9

Notes and Observations: He is listed as a shirt manufacturer in the 1910, 1920, and 1930 censuses. Family folklore is that he owned the Arrow Shirt Company, but his ownership of that particular company (or a period of time when his business may have been producing shirts under that particular brand name) may have been only during a portion of the 1910-1930 time period.

Herman David Bob's Social Security Number was 061-07-9732.3

Lucy B Sills was born on 14 March 1814 at Halifax, North Carolina.4

Lucy B Sills lived between 1831 and 1835 at Newyork?, Montgomery County, Tennessee, (this was likely the nearest post office).1

Lucy B Sills married John Jarman, son of Josiah Jarman, on 1 September 1831 at Clarksville, Montgomery County, Tennessee.1

Lucy B Sills lived between 1835 and 1857 at Livingston County, Kentucky, (probably in or near Salem -- although the 1840 census has the family listed in Smithfield, which is essentially across the county from Salem). Surviving Livingston County tax records list polls (and usually taxable property) for her husband John Jarman for the years 1835-1838, 1840-1844, 1846, and 1848-1857 (a poll seems to be a unit for counting a free, white, adult male -- an eligible voter and/or a potential militia member, perhaps). Tax records for several of these years also list children (of various age ranges) in the household for several of these years (names of minor children are not listed in the tax records). Although Lucy is not explicitly listed in these tax records, it is almost certain she was also present in the household during this time.

Thomas B. Sills, who may have been a brother of Lucy Sills, the wife of John Jarman, also paid taxes on land on the Sandy Creek watercourse in Livingston County, Kentucky, for several years (between 1839 and approximately 1846 – he also appeared on tax rolls in some earlier years, when he did not own land). William C. Fields, whose wife was probably John Jarman’s sister, appears on the tax rolls of Livingston County, Kentucky, for the years 1841, 1842, 1843, 1844, and 1845, although he was never taxed for any land holdings. The names of other taxpayers in this county with the surnames Jarman, Fields, and Sills are listed in the “full” endnote cited for this paragraph. That endnote citation contains a lengthy description of the content and format of these tax records.1

Lucy B Sills probably appeared among the number of individuals in various age-gender groups on the census of 1840 at Smithland Township, Livingston County, Kentucky, numbered among those in her husband's household.5

Lucy B Sills and John Jarman appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Livingston County, Kentucky, enumerated 28 August 1850. The real estate associated with the household was listed as having a value of $100. The official date of that census was 01 June 1850. Their children Joshuea Jarman, Henry Jarman, Josiah T. Jarman, John H Jarman, William B Jarman, Catherine Jarman, Benjamin F Jarman and Samuel Jarman were listed as living with them. The children's ages were: 16, 15, 13, 11, 10, 5, 3, and 1, respectively. Both John Jarman and Lucy B Sills were listed as persons over 20 unable to read or write. No children were listed as having attended school within a year of the census date.3

In addition, Charles A Stephens, believed to be a son, is listed as a member of the household, but was apparently residing in a separate dwelling. The household was listed as having real estate worth $2000 and personal property worth $1500. No members of the household were listed as attending school within the last year. The census information suggests all members of the household could read and write (as could every adult listed on this census form sheet, so the enumerator may not have been diligent in asking that question).2

An alternative source gives the maiden name of Susan Williams (married surname Stephans) as the mother if Thomas Allen Stephens.3

Mary Smith1,2,3

F, b. April 1838, d. 21 December 1920
MotherMargarett (--?--)
Mary Smith was born in April 1838 in Alabama (the 1870 census indicates she was born in Tennessee).4,5

Mary Smith married William C Reid on 12 May 1864 in Phelps County, Missouri.1

Mary Smith lived in 1865 at St. James, Phelps County, Missouri.1

Mary Smith lived in 1867 at Knob View, Phelps County, Missouri.6

Mary Smith married Thomas Allen Stephens, son of John Hubbard Stephens and Mary (--?--), on 14 March 1869 in Douglas County, Missouri.7,2

Mary Smith and Thomas Allen Stephens appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Wood Richland Township, Texas County, Missouri at Houston (Post Office), enumerated July 1870. The real estate associated with the household was listed as having a value of $250 and personal effects were listed as having a value of $335. The official date of that census was 01 June 1870. Their children James Thomas Stephens and John William Stephens were listed as living with them, as were Mary's daughter, Mary Margarett William Reid, and Thomas Allen's daughter, Arah Stephens.2 Mary Smith was listed as a housekeeper in the 1870 census.2

Thomas Allen Stephens (listed as T A Stephens) and Mary Smith (listed as Mary Stephens) appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Taylor Township, Greene County, Missouri, enumerated 14 June 1880. The official date of that census was 01 June 1870. Thomas’s age was listed as 45. Mary’s age was listed as 42. They were both listed as having been born in Tennessee, with both of his parents listed as born in Virginia and both of hers born in . Tennessee. Their occupations were listed as Farmer and Keeping House, respectively. Their children John William Stephens, James Thomas Stephens, Carrol Stephens, Newton Cass Stephens and Lewis Siemon Stephens were listed as living with them. Her daughterMary M. Stephens (listed here as Mary M Stephens) was also listed as living in the household. No one was listed as having been married within a year prior to the date official census date. None of the children were listed as attending school within the year prior to the official census date. The two adults were listed as able to read and write, as was the younger Mary. None of the sons was listed as able to read and write (although these tick-marks were crossed out on the form for all but the two older – twin – boys; the question was apparently intended to be asked for children under the age of ten). No one was listed as attending school during the year prior to the census date.

One member of the household, Thomas Stephens (this probably referred to him having lost the sight in one eye due to an accident – which was apparently unrelated to his military service). The household had no male citizens over the age of 21 whose right to vote was denied or abridged due to reason other than rebellion.

The handwritten census schedule for this household lists the state of birth of each person in the household. The boys (all born after the marriage of Thomas and Mary) are all listed with both parents born in Tennessee. However, the oldest child (R:withMother) is has her father listed as born in Missouri. This marks her as having a different father, so she is the daughter of the deceased first husband of Mary Smith, who died while in military service in the US Civil War. In her father’s Civil War pension file records, her name is given as Mary William Reid. The placement of her name following her younger brothers (sons of both Thomas and Mary) also suggests that she is not a biological child of the head of the household Thomas Allen Stephens. The placement of her name following her younger brothers (sons of both Thomas and Mary) also suggests that she is not a biological child of the head of the household Thomas Allen Stephens.

The absence of Arah Stephens in (who, if alive, would be around age 17) in the household at the time of the 1880 census suggests she died between 1870 and 1880. There is some chance that she left the household (perhaps to get married) while very young. No record has been found of either a death or a marriage for her in the 1870-1880 time period.8

Mary Smith and Thomas Allen Stephens appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Mountain Grove Township, Wright County, Missouri, enumerated 13 June 1900. The residence was listed as a farm and was owned with a mortgage. The official date of that census was 01 June 1900. This census is unique in that month and year of birth were requested for each individual, in addition to age at the official census date. Their children John William Stephens, Newton Cass Stephens and Samuel H Stephens were listed as living with them. Everyone in the household was listed as being able to read, write, and speak English. No one was listed as attending school (the youngest member of the household was 22). Mary Smith was listed as the mother of eight children, with seven of them living as of the date of the census.3,9

Mary Smith and Thomas Allen Stephens appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Mountain Grove Township, Wright County, Missouri at East Eighth Street, enumerated 15 April 1910, The home was listed as owned, mortgaged, and not on a farm. The official date of that census was 15 April 1910. Their son John William Stephens was listed as living with them. Thomas A Stephens and Mary Smith were listed as ages 75 and 72, respectively, born in Tennessee and Alabama, respectively, both married (for at least the second time) for 40 years, both could read and write, and neither attended school. Thomas's occupation was listed as "own income" (possibly referring to his Civil War pension, but he might have had other income too). He was listed as a veteran of the Union Army. Mary's occupation was listed as "none." She was listed as having had 7 children, of whom 6 were still living. The population schedule indicates a farm schedule was not filed for this household.5

Mary Smith (listed as Mary Stephens) and her son, John William Stephens, (listed as John Stephens) appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Mountain Grove City (4th Class City), Mountain Grove Township, Wright County, Missouri, enumerated 15 January 1920. The official date of that census was 01 January 1920. The home was listed as owned with no mortgage (and apparently not on a farm). Mary Smith was listed as age 81, born in Alabama, and a widow. John William Stephens no age was listed for John William Stephens, who was listed as born in Missouri and single. John William Stephens’s occupation was listed as Real Estate and he was listed as a worker (not self-employed). Mary Smith was listed as having no occupation. Her son, John William Stephens, was listed as living with her Both members of the household were listed as being able to read, write, and speak English, and did not attend school after September 1, 1919. John was age 49 (one day short of age 50) on the official census date. However, he had turned 50 by the date the census enumerator had visited the household, 15 January 1920. It could be that confusion over this was why his age was left blank in the handwritten census schedule. The census schedule referred to Mountain Grove City as “4th Class,” which was apparently a type of community under Missouri statutes.10

Mary Smith died on 21 December 1920 in Missouri at age 82.11
