S. Department of Homeland Security, P. O. Box 648010, Lee's Summit, Missouri.

This file/package contains several items: (1) a certificate of naturalization (No. 218771), dated 21 June 1912, which mentions he is age 32, 5 ft, 5 1/2 in tall, dark complexion, brown hair, brown eyes, married to Annie (age 26, address: 444 Amboy Avenue, Perth Amboy NJ), also has children Sarah (age 5) and Ida (age 3), both ar same address (which is also given as Harry's address), and that he was formerly a citizen of Russia; (2) a second certificate of naturalization (No. 1328565), dated 13 May 1920, which contains information similar to the first one, except that dates and locations of birth of daughters Sarah and Ida are included (this information appears to be 15 Feb 1907 in Perth Amboy for Sarah, and 17 March 1909 with location illegible for Ida -- the location for Ida might be Newark NJ), no information given for Israel, born 1914); (3) petition for naturalization (copied on two sheets), which is largely illegible, but which appears to be associated with the second certificate of naturalization, the petition appears to contains several serial numbers, but the only one that is legible is 202501, near the bottom of the second sheet), the names of two witnesses seem to be partially legible, that are Abe Levy, a merchant from Perth Amboy, and someone with given name Morris, whose surname is illegible, who might be a butcher from New Brunswick; and (4) what appear to be carbon copies used to fill out two pre-printed forms (both dated 13 Jan 1920) that apparently sent information about Certificate 218771 to the clerk of the court of common pleas in New Brunswick NJ and to some agency in Philadelphia.

  • [S1044] Annie (Koltuinoff) Goldstein grave marker, Congregation Shari Tephalo/Congregation Beth Mordecai/Hebrew Progressive Cemeteries, Florida Grove Road, Perth Amboy, New Jersey; read by Carl Fields, approx 2006.

In this instance, the surname listed on the grave marker is Goldstein. If this is indeed the person originally known as Annie Koltinoff, the surname Goldstein is likely her stepfather's surname (and he mother's surname for most of the time her mother lived in the US), rahter than a married name. Research done as of July 2013 has not uncovered that Annie Koltinoff "Goldstein" was ever married.

There are three adjacent Jewish cemeteries at this location, some of which have had more than one name during their history (so the current name may not correspond to the name on, say, an older death certificate and burial record). The three cemeteries have separate gates and exterior wall designs (for the walls facing Florida Grove Road), but once inside a gate, there are (as of 2013) no internal barriers separating one cemetery from the others. Thus, in some cases, it is unclear which of the three cemeteries a specific grave "belongs" to. The three cemeteries appear to be inside the current (2013) city limits of Perth Amboy. However, they are probably close to a city limit and may be in an adjacent municipality. It is likely they were outside the Perth Amboy city limits (possibly in Woodbridge Township) at the time of the earliest burials. Also, the street name (Florida Grove Road in 2013) may have been different in a earlier era (e.g., circa1920s). The southwest corner of the cluster of three adjacent cemeteries is at the northwest corner of the intersection of Florida Grove Road and Bingle Street.

At least one of these three cemeteries (Congregation Shari Tephalo Cemetery) is maintained by Friends for Preservation of Middlesex County Jewish Cemeteries, Inc.; P. O. Box 306; Moorestown, NJ 08057; phone: 856-222-1418; (http://www.friendsofjewishcemeteries.org : accessed 25 July 2013). This organization was formed around 2005 and focuses on maintaining landscaping, etc. They probably have access to few, if any, burial records.

  • [S1067] Harry Goldstein Cemetery Marker, Hebrew Fraternity Cemetery, New Brunswick Avenue, Fords, New Jersey; read by Carl Fields, approx2006.

The front gate of this cemetery is on New Brunswick Avenue (the street address might be approximately 260 New Brunswick Avenue). Because of parking limitations, the cemetery seemed to often (in the 2006-2010 era) be more easily accessed by a small side gate from Oregon Avenue, which runs approximately north from New Brunswick Avenue, from perhaps 60-80 feet approximately west of the cemetery gate. The path from this gate seems to extend perhaps 25 feet through a very small (separately fenced) cemetery immediately west of Hebrew Fraternity Cemetery, before reaching the western fence for Hebrew Fraternity Cemetery. The significance of this smaller cemetery is unknown.

Hebrew Fraternity Cemetery appears to be inside the community of Fords, New Jersey, which seems to be an unincorporated community within Woodbridge Township, New Jersey. The name Hopewell also seems to be associated with the area where the cemetery is located. Hopewell may represent a current or former community or neighborhood.

Hebrew Fraternity Cemetery appears to be the southeasternmost of a group of cemeteries on both sides of Oregon Avenue (which seems to exist only to provide access to the various cemeteries. Maps on the Mapquest web site seem to refer to this entire group of cemeteries as a Hungarian Cemetery. However, in reality, the area seems to contains several cemeteries associated with various nationalities (and possibly more religions that just Catholic and Jewish).

This cemetery is maintained by Friends for Preservation of Middlesex County Jewish Cemeteries, Inc.; P. O. Box 306; Moorestown, NJ 08057; phone: 856-222-1418; (http://www.friendsofjewishcemeteries.org : accessed 25 July 2013). In a few instances, Carl neglected to record the page number of the issue of the newspaper where the article appeared (or else the page number is uncertain for other reasons). In some cases, obituaries and death notices may have been confused with one another. In a few instances, the same issue of the newspaper contained both a death notice and an obituary (usually on the same page). The name of the newspaper changed a few times starting in the 1960s, apparently due to reorganizations and mergers. The dates in these citations refer to when the news article appeared, which was almost always at least a day after the event described in the article took place.

  • [S1770] "Official Military Personnel File (OMPF), Coleman L Goff, Serial Number 32 084 248 (US Army, Active Service Began 3 Apr 1941)"; National Personnel Records Center (National Archives); 1 Archives Drive, St Louis, Missouri. About 75% if the records for veterans of the US Army (and Army Air Corps) during World War I and World War II (and the period between these wars) were lost due to a large fire in this facilty in 1973. However, this loss did not affect US Navy and US Marine Corps records.

The file was received from the National Archives branch in St Louis, Missouri. It contains 13 pages and appears to be limited to documents related to a request by Goff (apparently made in September 1945) to be considered for a partial disability (and associated benefits). There is also a supplemental form dated 16Jan 1946, but that may have been an internal army document, prepared without input from Goff). About half of the 13 pages appear to be older documents collected in response to that request Each of the pages seem to have been damaged by fire along the top and the right hand edge. It is not the full OMPF.

The information on what is apparently part of his initial clain within the file indicates his serial number was 32 084 298, he served from 3 Apr 1941 (begining at "N. Y.") unitl 1 Sept 1945 (discharged at Fort Dix, N. J.), his grade at discharge was Technician 5th grade (T/5, effectively a corporal), he was a member of the Headquarters and Service Company of the12th Engineer Batallion at the time of his discharge, his discharge was honorable for the purpose of demobilization. The intial disability claim appears to be related to dental treatment at the 12th (or possibly10th or 13th) Infantry Regiment "Disp." (Dispensary) at Fort Jackson SC and at Fort Leonard Wood MO when he was a member of the 8th Infantry Division. In both cases the number of the division is uncetain, as the type number (probably from a carbon copy) is not fully legible. The 12th Engineer Batallion was attached to the 8th Infantry Division. There are also confusing references in the documentation to a 12th Engineers Dispensary and to treatment at Camp Forrest, TN.

He also appears to have been treated for something in December 1943 at a dispensary on the S. S. Athos II. The Athos II (incorrectly referred to as Athos I on one page of the file) was a French ship that was used by th e US as a troop transport, making one trip from New York to the United Kingdom during World War II, in December 1943 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Athos_II_(1925) : accessed March 2017; most of the remainder of the Athos's service while it was under US control was associated the Pacific theater).
  • [S1771] Friends of the Eighth Division, "8th Infantry Division in WW2," Eighth Division Archives (http://www.fatherswar.com/8thinfdiv/ : accessed 23 March 2017).

The "main" website (reached by the URL listed above) leads to a multi-page web site. One of those linked sub-pages (whose title is also listed above) concerns World War II (WW2), which, in turn, has several sub-links of its own. The entire "Eighth Division Archives" web site seems to be (as of March 2017) a sub-unit (or perhaps an "adoptee") of the "Our Father's War" web site, which, in turn, seems to be associated with Jonathan Gawne (who may also go by the name Jon Green), the author of several books, including one titled Finding Your Father's War. There is also a related www.fatherswar.com web site.

In addtion, information about the 8th division can be found from MANY other web sites and publications, some of which are identified in the 8th Division Archives web pages. A short history of the division's combat role in World War 2 appears on the web site at the following url: (http://www.history.army.mil/html/forcestruc/cbtchron/cc/… : accessed 23 Mar 2017), from the US Army Center for Military History. This short history appears on several other web sites that were examined duirng late March 2017.
