Sarah A Childress was born on 13 November 1869 in Arkansas.1

Sarah A Childress married Edward L. Arnold, son of M. L. Arnold, on 11 November 1891.1

Sarah A Childress appeared on the census of 22 April 1910 at Big Bottom Township -- Sheet 6A, Newark town (Morgan Street), Independence County, Arkansas, She is listed as living in the household of James Childress (he and others are on page 5B of the census schedule). She is listed as Sarah A. Arnold, sister of James Childress.

Sarah A Childress married George McClellan Fields, son of William Charles Fields and Eira Keziah Jarman, on 20 September 1911 at Newark, Independence County, Arkansas. Their ages were listed as 49 and 41, respectively. Marriage was performed by H. M. McDoniel, Minister of the Gospel. Bondsmen were George McClellan Fields and B L Brown. "Family folklore" stories concerning this marriage, which Carl Fields heard at least third-hand as a boy, included that (1) Sarah A Childress had initially come into the household as a housekeeper (probably to help care for the younger sons after the death of George's first wife and teenage daughter) and (2) Sarah "negotiated" marriage terms by, for example, stating that she would not be able to marry unless she had a sewing machine (there were other conditions, which Carl could not remember). The sewing machine was in the posession of her daughter, Ruby Alice Fields, when Carl was growing up in the 1950s. It was originally a human-powered machine (via a foot treadke), but had (at some point) been converted to be powered by a small electric motor. The treadle was still attached ot the machine.3,4,2

Sarah A Childress and George McClellan Fields appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Newark, Independence County, Arkansas on Long Street, enumerated 14 January 1920. The home was listed as being owned with no mortgage. The official date of that census was 01 January 1920. Their daughter Ruby Alice Fields was listed as living with them. His children Virgil Aaron Fields, Ralph Fields and Robert Lacy Fields were also listed as living with them, along with Sarah's niece, Alma Childress (who is listed in the census as a servant). All of the members of the household age 12 and over were listed as being able to read and write, and all of the children (including Alma Childress) were listed as attending school.2

Sarah A Childress, referred to as Mrs G. M. Fields, and her "little daughter," Ruby Alice Fields returned to their home in Newark, Arkansas, on 14 August 1922, after "a pleasant visit with relatives in Oklahoma." They had left in late July.5

Ralph Fields, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, spent 23 and 24 Dec 1922 in Newark, Arkansas, visiting his parents, i.e., his father and stepmother, G. M. Fields and Sarah A Childress, (Mr and Mrs G. M. Fields).6

George McClellan Fields (listed as George Fields) and Sarah A Childress (listed as Sallie Fields) appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Newark Town, Big Bottom Township, Independence County, Arkansas, enumerated 9 April 1930. The official date of that census was 02 April 1930. Their ages were listed as 67 and 60, respectively, both listed as born in Arkansas (almost certainly incorrect for George, who is almost always listed as born in Missouri; his parent’s birth states are also almost certainly incorrect), ages at marriage (actually, the ages listed for them are the ages at the time of this second marriage for each of them) were listed as 49 and 42, respectively, both did not attend school the previous year, and both could read and write. The home was listed as owned and on a farm (although, except for small pasture, most land that the family farmed was not contiguous with the residence, and was some miles distant). No indication was listed as to whether or not a radio was present in the home (this line was blank for everyone on this page of the census schedule). George’s occupation was listed as Manager of a farm and he was listed as employed. No occupation was listed for Sarah. No military veterans were listed as living in the household. George’s adult son, William Orville Fields, and his family was listed as the next household on the same page of the census schedule.7

Sarah A Childress appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Newark, Independence County, Arkansas, enumerated 10 April 1940. The home was listed as owned, valued at $600, and not on a farm. The official date of that census was 01 April 1940. Two of her stepsons, Ralph Fields and Robert Lacy Fields, were listed as living with her. All household members were listed having lived in the same house on 1 Apr 1935. Sarah was listed as age 70, widowed, born in Arkansas, and not attending school in March 1940. Sarah was listed as having completed six years of school. Sarah was listed as doing housework the week of 24-30 March, and not working for wages or seeking such work. No occupation was listed for her. Sarah is listed as having no 1939 wage income but she did have other (non-wage) income in excess of $50. The schedule sheet indicates a farm schedule was prepared for this household.8

Sarah A Childress died on 26 September 1948 at Newark, Independence County, Arkansas, at age 78.1 She was buried at Blue Springs Cemetery, Newark, Independence County, Arkansas.9

George Franklin Fields was born on 4 December 1921 in Arkansas.2,3,4

Della Sarah Moore and her "little son," George Franklin Fields visited her sister in England, Arkansas, circa 21 October 1922.5

George Franklin Fields and Della Sarah Moore, her son, appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Madison Election Precinct, Maricopa County, Arizona at Indian School Road, enumerated 17 April 1930. Della Sarah Moore was listed as a female named "V A Fields", presumably meaning Mrs. V A Fields. The official date of that census was 02 April 1930. Della Sarah Moore's age was listed as 30, born in Arkansas, married, age at first marriage was 20, did not attend school the previous year and could read and write. She was listed as employed as a cook at a private residence: the household of Robert H and Mary M Fuqua (ages 51 and 48, respectively). The home was listed as owned, valued at $175,000, and on a farm (Robert Fuqua's occupation is listed as citrus farmer; it is unclear if the large value of the "home" is for the residence itself, or if it includes the value of adjacent citrus orchards). This residence was probably within what is now the city of Scottsdale. Others living in the household (in addition to Della and the Fuquas), included Della Sarah Moore's son, George Franklin Fields, age 8, Gertrude Washburn (age 27), a neice of Robert H Fuqua, and Will McGee (age 62), a guest. A farm census schedule was submitted for the Fuqua household.6

George Franklin Fields appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona in the household of his mother, Della Sarah Moore, and stepfather, Ernest W Wood, at 814 East Washington. The official date of that census was 01 April 1940. He was listed as: age 18, single, did not attend school during March 1940, had completed eight years of school, born in Arkansas, lived in same place on 1 Apr 1935, was not employed, was seeking work, and was listed as a new woker. No income was listed for 1939.7,8

George Franklin Fields initially enlisted in the US Army on 1 July 1940 at Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona. His (civilian) home address at that time was 814 E. Washington Street, Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona. He was described as 5 ft. 9.5 inches tall, weighed 138 pounds, shoe size 9C, and had blue eyes and brown hair. Prior to entering the military he had completed 9 years of schooling (8 years of grammar school and one year of high school; in a later interview – probably around 1946 – he indicated the grammar school had been in Phoenix Arizona, but the one year of high school had been in 1938 in “Monet” Arkansas, probably really Monette Arkansas; the later interview indicated he had also attended a “state vocational school,” studying auto mechanics, in Phoenix Arizona in 1939). His civilian occupation had been automotive mechanic. He had worked at that occupation for 2 years and had received pay of $7.50 per week (the later interview stated his employer in this 1939-1940 time period had been the Blare & Claver Company, 11th and Van Buren, Phoenix Arizona). He apparently enlisted directly into the 19th Coast Artillery Company(?) to serve for three years at Fort Rosecrans, which is near Point Loma, at the southern tip of the peninsula that forms the (outer) western boundary of San Diego Bay in the state of California. Since he was a minor at the time of his enlistment, his mother, Della Sarah Moore (giving her name as Della Wood) signed as consenting to his enlistment. His military serial number was 18 017 004.9

His basic military training in 1940 was apparently at Fort Rosecrans and appears to have been only four weeks in duration. He appears to have been transferred to Camp Callan, Californina, on 5 May 1941, which had been established earlier that year as a training center for long-range coastal artillery. It is unclear if he was sent there for additional training, or to serve as part of the cadre (staff) of the training facility. This ~1200 acre facility was several miles north of Fort Rosecrans, but still on the California coast. Camp Callan no longer exists (as this is written in May 2017). Parts of the site are occupied by portions of the Torey Pines Golf Course and by portions of the University of California at San Diego campus.10,11

He was transferred back to Fort Rosecrans, California, on 2 September 1941 to serve in Battery “D” of the 19th Coast Artillery.12

On 10 September 1941, he requested to be transferred to Luke Field, Litchfield, Arizona, which was an Army Air Force (AAF) base. This request initially seemed odd in that, as part of the request, he offered to pay his own travel and relocation expenses for this transfer. However, the matter-of-fact way that it is stated in the requesting document suggest it might have been a relatively standard practice in that era. This transfer became effective on 1 Oct 1941.12

He seems to have initially been assigned to the “544th School Squadron,” AAF, once he arrived at Luke Field, Litchfield, Arizona. On 3 June 1942 he was assigned to the 873rd Guard Squadron at Luke Field, Litchfield, Arizona. He was on furlough between 16 Dec 1942 and 29 Dec 1942.13

His mother, Della Sarah Moore, usually identified as Della Wood in his military records, seems to have been receiving an allotment of $22 per month as his dependent by at least 30 April 1943 (it may have begun earlier) and continuing until the end of his first enlistment. It is unclear when that allotment began.14

He was transferred to the 2053rd Ordinance Service Company (Aviation) on 14 May 1943 at Luke Field, Litchfield, Arizona. This unit seems to have been moved to Yuma, Arizona in October 1943. He also seems to have been assigned to several other units in the US during the next few years. These included: the 3036th AAF Base Unit (BU), Yuma, Arizona (1 May 1944), the 4052nd AAF BU, Fresno California (28 Oct 1944) and Flora, Mississippi (13 Nov 1944), 989th Air Engineering Squadron, 559th Air Service Group, McCook, Nebraska (12 Mar 1945), the 4136th AAF BU, Tinker Field, Oklahoma (15 Apr 1945), the 1010th Air Service Group, also at Tinker Field, Oklahoma (16 May 1945), and the 367th Air Service Group, Victoria, Kansas (9 Jun 1945). He was on furlough between 22 Sept 1943 and 6 Oct 1943, and between 19 Feb 1945 and 22 Mar 1945.

His grade shifted between private and corporal multiple times between 1941 and 1943. On at least two occasions, the promotion to corporal was indicated to be temporary. Various standing orders (identified only by numbers) are listed as the authorities for the various in grade. It is not clear if his performance had something to do with any of the reductions in grade, or if they were due to things such as organizational restructurings.15

The 1945 Phoenix Arizona city directory (published by Phoenix Directory Company) indicated George Franklin Fields (listed as Geo F Fields) lived at 416 N 16th Street and his occupation was listed as USA (US Army). He was probably actually elsewhere on military duty at that time.16

He left Seattle, Washington, on 8 August 1945 for service in the Pacific Theater, arriving on Guam on 9 Sept 1945. Combat in the Pacific Theater had ended while he was in transit to Guam. He left Guam (APO 237) on 23 Oct 1945. He arrived in Saipan on 24 Oct 1945. He left Saipan on 3 Nov 1945 and arrived at “LAPE” (Los Angeles Port of Entry?) on 17 Nov 1945. His overseas service is confusing. He seems to have been in the 501st Bomb Group (APO 182, 12 Sept 1945), the 497th Bomb Group (this one was APO 237), and the 873rd Bomb Squadron of the 498th Bomb Group (also APO 237, 26 Oct 1945).17

His first enlistment ended on (separation date) 20 November 1945 at Separation Center, Fort McArthur, California, as a private in the regular army (although he had briefly held the grade of corporal on three occasions during this first enlistment). His military occupational specialty was Airplane Mechanic (747). He held an Army Air Force (AAF) Tech Badge with a Mechanic Bar. He had not participated in any battles or campaigns and had not been wounded. He had been awarded the American Defense Service Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Victory Medal. He stated that he intended to travel to 416 North 12th Street, Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona to pursue civilian employment. He was paid $177.52 at the time of the separation, which included $22.45 in travel pay. The “organization” listed in Box 6 of his Separation Papers is the first organization he was assigned to after his transfer to the AAF (in the autumn of 1941); his actual first military organization or unit (in July 1940) was a coast artillery company at Fort Rosecrans.18

George Franklin Fields reenlisted for another three years in the Army Air Force on 3 December 1945 at Phoenx, Maricopa County, Arizona, requesting to be assigned only to duty stations in the United States. In the papers associated with this 1946 enlistment, he said his civilian occupation (prior to his initial enlistment in 1940) had been automotive mechanic, he worked at that occupation for two years, and his weekly wage was $20 per week. He listed one dependent, his mother, Della Sarah Moore, whose name is listed on in the documentation as “Della NMN Wood” (where NMN means no middle name). His height is listed as 70.5 inches (5 ft, 10.5 in) and his weight is listed as 159 pounds. Hair color is brown, and eye color is grey. He appears to have received a re-enlistment bonus of $250 and also an immediate re-enlistment furlough of 90 days, so he apparently did not actually report for duty until early March 1946.19

HisA summary military "army enlistment record" available on Ancestry.com (separate from his overall military personnel file) is dated 3 December 1945. His enlistment location is given as Phoenix, Arizona, which is also given as his residence. He is listed as being in the Air Corps, as a private, first class, in the Hawaiian Department, regular army. He is listed as born in 1921 in Arkansas. His education was given as one year of high school, civilian occupation: auto mechanic, and he was listed as single, with dependents. The spaces labled for height and weight on the "form" (apparently the information was really originally on an IBM card) were apparently used for special codes (such as Military Occupational Specialty). The date and grade shown listed in the "enlistment" source document seem like a situation during his service, or from the time of his discharge. They would not seem to correspond to someone of his background just entering the army (it seemed something more like a draftee re-enlisting into the regular army. This information was located before the OMPF became was obtained. When the OMPF did become available, it became clear that the card did indeed represent a re-enlistment.20

His initial assignment for this second enlistment seems to have been at the 3028th AAF BU at Luke Field, Litchfield, Arizona, starting on 14 March 1946. He was promoted to corporal on 31 May 1946.21

He was later (9 July 1946) assigned to the 3010th (?) AAF BU at Williams Field, Chander, Arizona, (Williams Fields actually seems to be a few miles east of Chandler, Arizona). He also seems to have had several short assignments at the 3502nd AAF BU at Chanute Field in Illinois. These may have been temporary assignments for various types of training (possibly as an aircraft instrument mechanic).22

During this second enlistment, George Franklin Fields had a $22.00 per month deduction for his mother between 1 April 1946 and 31 Oct 1946. He instituted a $22.00 per month allotment commencing circa October 1946 for his wife Aline Amelia (--?--), listed here as Aline Amelia Fields, suggesting they married in September 1946.23

On 10 December 1946, while stationed at Williams Field, Chandler, Arizona, he requested an early discharge, giving his recent marriage as a primary reason for the request.24

He seems to have enlisted in the Army Air Force reserves on 20 December 1946 at Williams Field, Chandler, Arizona, for three years. The rationale for requesting a discarage on December 10th and then re-enlisting for three years on December 20th, is that it seems to be a way of leaving full-time active duty and then entering the inactive (or only part-time active) reserves.

It appears that sometime during this 1946-1949 enlistment (and during a subsequent enlistment, below, his “paperwork” began to be routed through Hamilton Air Force Base in California. Williams Field may have closed (or changed to a different mission) during this time period. He may have also, at times, reported to a training center at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Arizona. During these reserve enlistments, it is likely that he would have had to report for duty and training on only infrequent occasions. It is also possible that he was just on a roster of names for possible callup during certain periods. During one communication with the air force during this enlistment (on 25 Nov 1948), he gave his permanent address as 416 N. 12th Street, Phoenix Arizona, but indicated he could be reached at a temporary address of P. O. Box 552, Davis Dam, Nevada.25

He reenlisted for an additional three year term in the (now) Air Force reserves on 20 December 1949 (the Air Force had become a separate branch of the military in 1947, in effect, spun off from the US Army). The official “location” of this enlistment seems to have been Hamilton Air Force Base in California, but it is unclear if he ever reported there in person. Las Vegas Air Force Base, Nevada, is also mentioned in some of the paperwork dealing with this enlistment. His permanent home address was listed as 1147 East Taylor St, Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona (c/o Pearl Fields), during this period.26

Around 1952 he stated that he had obtained a private pilot’s license during August 1950 by taking lessons at the Kingman Flying School. He also indicated that had attended Joyce Flying School in pursuit of a commercial pilot’s license, but had not year completed the training. He indicated he had flown the following types of aircraft: BT 13, Cessna 140, Arcona 85, and (Piper?) Cub (some or all of these may have been flown as a student pilot). At this time, he was unemployed, but regarded his occupation as a carpenter, heavy construction. He had also previously worked as a truck driver (semi-trailer dump truck) and an auto mechanic (service and overhaul).27

On 5 January 1953, he provided information to the air force indicating he had worked as an auto mechanic for about six years. At that time he was employed by Gene Hartman, whose address was given as at the intersection of 20th and East Roosevelt in Phoenix Arizona. He listed the following other occupations since leaving active duty military service in late 1946: carpenter, truck driver, well drill helper, and mechanic. He listed his air force grade as Airman, first class, and his address as 1146 E. Taylor, Phoenix.28

On 1 May 1953, he gave his USAFR grade as corporal. Height listed as 5 ft 10.5 inches. Weight 155 pounds.29

A set of USAFR orders dated 30 May 1953 indicated he had been discharged from the USAFR on 19 Mar 1953 due to reaching the end of his term of service. His grade was referred to as Airman, second class, in these orders. His permanent residence effective the date of his discharge was listed as c/o Pearl Fields, 1146 E Taylor, Phoenix AZ.30

George Franklin Fields and Aline Amelia (--?--) were divorced in 1956 in Arizona.31

George Franklin Fields died on 20 March 1979 at Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona, at age 57.32,2 He was buried at Greenwood Cemetery, Phoenix, Arizona.33

George Franklin Fields's Social Security Number was 527-16-8876, issued in Arizona before 1951 (last residence/benefit was Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona.)2

His paternal uncles (William Orvile Fields, Virgil Aaron Fields, Ralph Fields, and Robert Lacy Fields) generally referred to him as "Little Virgil" (apparently to distinguish him from Virgil Aaron Fields).2 Virgil Lindsey Fields was born on 15 September 1914 at Newark, Independence County, Arkansas.3

Virgil Lindsey Fields appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Newark, Independence County, Arkansas in the household of his parents, Clarence Fields and Mamie Howard Chamberlain, on College Street.1

Virgil Lindsey Fields also appeared on the census of 1930 at 811 North Third Street, Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona.4 He was listed as a newsboy, working for a newspaper, in the 1930 census.4

Virgil Lindsey Fields appeared on the census of 1930 at Del Rey Election Precinct, 2245 East Washington, Maricopa County, Arizona.5

Attended Phoenix (Arizona) Union High School. Left school in November 1931. Attended a barber college for approximately 6 months. He later indicated that, as of 1943, he employed his barber skills only as a hobby (this was probably a useful skill when he was a member of work crews at remote construction sites).6

The 1931 Phoenix Arizona city directory (published by Arizona Directory Company) indicated Virgil L. Fields lived at 2229 W Madison and his occupation was barber.7

The 1932 Phoenix Arizona city directory (published by Arizona Directory Company) indicated Virgil Lindsey Fields lived at 911 W. Washington. His occupation was listed as a barber at Moler Barber College.8

Between 1934 and 1943 he was primarily a construction worker, apparently doing various kinds of work on several projects at several different locations, although he later listed his main occupation as structural-steel worker. The skills and work experience he later claimed to have acquired during this time period included: construction, demolition, pipes, timbering, cribbing, sealing, rigging, assembly of truss members, rivet gang driver, dry dock construction, along with some welding and setting of heavy equipment. He also claimed some “working knowledge” of Arabic, Italian, and Spanish languages.9

On 19 February 1935, it appears that Virgil Lindsey Fields (listed as Virgil L Fields) and Rose Daly filled out an affidavit for a marriage license in Yuma County, Arizona. The affadivit was apparently not signed by the county clerk. There is no known specific documentation indicating that a marriage license was ever issued or that a marriage between these two individuals ever took place. BUT, A Virgil Fields (who seems to correspond to this individual) was listed as divorced in the 1940 Census. Both Virgil and Rose stated they were residents of Indio, California (giving the same specific mailingaddress, where the certificate was to be sent following a wedding, of Box 95F, Indio, California). The affidavit gives there ages as 24 and 20, respectively, and their places of birth as Arkansas and Arizona, respectively. Virgil Lindsey Fields's occupation is listed as Steel Worker. Except for his indicated age (24, when at that time he was 20), the information matches up quite well with Virgil Lindsey Fields. However, there is a possibility this license application was filled out by a different person, with a similar name.10

Virgil Lindsey Fields married Elinore Louise Oakley, daughter of Bryce Oakley and Ellen Cora Grant, circa 1941 possibly in New York state. She had two sons from a prior marriage, Robert Alfred Caggiano (born 13 Feb 1934) and James Gary Caggiano (born 26 June 1937).11

During June 1941, he appears to have lived in Macon County, North Carolina, in the town of Nantahala (or possibly in Franklin).12

Between Mar 1942 and May 1943 he was in Eithrea (in Africa) working to dismantle an Italian Army base. He was apparently a foreman on a construction gang responsible for dismantling water tanks and a distillation plant on the former base. Eritrea had been an Italian colony from around 1889 until 1941. The British Army expelled Italy following the Battle of Kerem in 1941 and took over administration of the country. His job in Eritrea included serving on guard details between Sept 1942 and April 1943 in (or "as an") “A. V. G.” (possibly armed volunteer guard?).6

From June 1943 to August 1943, immediately prior to entering the Navy, he had been employed doing concrete tunnel labor related to a “Denver Ordannce Plant”, “Denver” (presumably Colorado) appears to be his work location. That pre-induction employer is listed as McGraw Construction Company, Alcoa New Construction, Phoenix, Arizona. His family lived at in Phoenix at that time.13

Inducted (or enlisted) into US Navy at a recruiting station on 28 August 1943 in Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona. He was immediately placed on a short leave and told to report for duty on 3 Sept 1943. His initial salary as an Apprentice Seaman was $50/month. At the time he entered the navy, he was listed as having blue eyes, light brown hair, was 5 ft 10.5 inches tall, weighed 172 pounds, tatoo ("Duke") on upper right forearm, religious preference was Presbyterian, and his blood type was A. He also indicated he had been involved in amateur boxing and had a hobby of taking and developing photographs. His address at the time of his induction was 310 East Rose Lane, Phoenix, Arizona. His service number was 882-55-45.14

His duty assignments while in the Navy (prior to beginning transit back to the US for discharge) were:
8/28/1943 to 8/28/1943 NRS, Phoenix Arizona

]9/4/1943 to 11/4/1943 USNTS, San Diego California (on leave in US 9/23/43 to 11/1/43)

11/4/43 to 1/17/44 NavRepBase, San Diego California (on leave in US 9/23/43 to 11/1/43)

1/18/44 to 6/30/44       Lion 4

7/1/44 to 10/20/44 LCRU, Navy 3205

10/20/44 to 10/13/45 Repair Unit, Navy 3205 (on leave in Sydney, Australia, 6/14/45 to 6/24/45)

In the above, NRS probably means Navy Recruiting Station, USNTS is probably United States Navy Training Station, NavRepBase is probably Navy Repair Base, and LCRU is Landing Craft Repair Unit. Lion 4 appears to be the code name for a certain type of (large) naval base (described below). IF the dates for the leave starting 9/23/43 are correct, it would seem his “basic training” was surprisingly brief. It is possible the US leave really began on 10/23/1943. Subsequent to 10/13/45, he was probably in transit to the US for discharge (listed below).15

He was promoted from S 2rd class (SR) to SF 3nd class (SR), effective 15 Dec 1943, going from (basic) Seaman (S) 2nd class to a higher (petty officer) “rating” in his occupational specialty as Shipfitter (SF) 3rd class, in Ship Repair (SR), as a subspecialty. His monthly salary increased at that time, possibly from $54 to $78.16

He probably left the continental US for service in the Asiatic-Pacific Area on 27 March 1944, crossed the Equator on 3 April 1944 (on board U. S. A. T. – U. S. Army Transport -- Sea Flasher, a transport ship), crossed the International Date Line on 9 April 1944, and qualified for an Asiatic-Pacific Area Campaign Medal on 5 May 1944. However, his military record also contains information indicating the four dates for these events were: 27 April, 5 May, 11 May, and 5 June (all in 1944) and the ship was U. S. A. T. “Sloterdjk” (really the Sloterdijk, a Dutch-owned ship apparently operated by a British Crew during World War II). His ship was probably the Sea Flasher (and with the corresponding dates listed above for Sea Flasher), based on Virgil Lindsey Fields listing 27 March 1944 as the date when he left the US in his request for a 10-day annual leave made in April 1944. However, it is possible that part of his transfer to the Southwest Pacific was aboard one of these ships and part of it was aboard the other.17

The majority of his time in the Navy was spent in “Navy Base 3205”. This is probably a code name for a location that was classified at that time. A list of locations available in November 2016 indicates that Navy Base 3205 (a Fleet Post Office designation) was Manus Island, in the Admiralty Islands, which are north of the west end of New Guinea. The base was on the east end of Manus Island, with a portion of the base – apparently including some of the repair yards -- on Los Negros Island, which is immediately east of Manus Island, and separated from it by a channel a few hundred feet wide (the two islands may have been connected by a bridge). The picture (below, right) contains an insert (upper right corner) showing Manus Island in its entirity. The main part of the map shows the western end of Manus Island and Los Negros Island, which is very near to Munus.18
Map of East End of Manus Island and Los Negros Island

As indicated above, his military record shows transfers (1) from “Lion 4” to the LCRU on Navy Base 3205” and (2) from the “LCRU on Base 3205” to the “Repair Unit on Base 3205”. It is unclear if these: (1) were “real” transfers, (2) units merged, or (3) units were redesignated. “Lion” was the code designation for several large naval bases, with “Lion 4” being one of these. “LCRU” is an abbreviation for “Landing Craft Repair Unit”. It is possible that that men and equipment for the base were gathered together on the US West Coast and shipped to the Pacific under the designation “Lion 4” and then the unit was designated Navy Base 3205 after it was set up on Manus Island. It is unclear if the “LCRU” and the “Repair Unit” were two different organizations that existed simultaneously on Manus Island, or if the LCRU somehow evolved into a (more general) Repair Unit as the series of target island in the US "island hopping" campaign moved farther from Manus Island, so that the ships under repair at that location changed from mostly landing craft to mostly other types of ships and boats.19

He was promoted from Shipfitter (SF) 3rd class Ship Repair (SR) to SF 2nd class (SR) (T), effective 2 Oct 1945. The “(T)” might mean “temporary”. His monthly salary increased at that time, possibly from $78 to $96.20

He applied for discharge 13 October 1945, while still stationed at Navy Base Manus Island. The time between the approval of this application and his actual discharge (or separation) on 2 Dec 1945, was probably spent in transit back to the United States.21

His unit received a commendation, sent to All Hands in Repair Unit, Navy 3205, 18 October 1945 from Commander, Seventh Fleet, for “Maintenance of a highly important Naval Base for the Supply and repair of fighting ships and service to the Fleet with the utmost efficiency, which contributed to the successful operation of Allied Forces in the Southwest Pacific during the period March 1944 to February 1945."22

He received an honorable separation from US Navy 2 December 1945 San Pedro, California. Received payment of $162.04 at time of discharge, including $22.35 for mileage allowance for travel to his home in Phoenix Arizona. His separation papers suggested he planned to undertake training in the area of photography after leaving military service.23

The 1945 Phoenix Arizona city directory (published by Phoenix Directory Company) indicated Virgil Lindsey Fields and Elinore Louise Oakley (listed as Elinore Fields) lived at 310 Rose Lane and his occupation was listed as USN (US Navy). He was probably actually on overseas duty during much of 1945.24

Virgil Lindsey Fields died on 22 July 1982 at Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona, at age 67.25,3 He was buried at Greenwood Cemetery, Phoenix, Arizona.26

Virgil Lindsey Fields's Social Security Number was 526-09-1077.3

R. G. Fields was apparently primairly known as R. G. throughout his entire life. There is a family legend that his name (from birth) truly was "R. G.", but that he himself had assigned the names Richard George to his initials at some point in his life. If this is true, the self-assignment apparently came at a fairly early point in his life, since he was listed as "Richard G. Fields" in the 1920 census, when he was age 7 and 2 months. As of January 1920, the time of the 1920 census, Jeannette Rankin Fields was apparently also known as Ada G. Fields, the name used for her in that census.2 She was born on 15 November 1916 in Arkansas.1,3

Jeannette Rankin Fields appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Newark, Independence County, Arkansas in the household of her parents, Clarence Fields and Mamie Howard Chamberlain, on College Street.2

Jeannette Rankin Fields appeared on the census of 1930 at 811 North Third Street, Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona.4

Jeannette Rankin Fields also appeared on the census of 1930 at Del Rey Election Precinct, 2245 East Washington, Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona.5

The 1936 Phoenix Arizona city directory (published by Arizona Directory Company) indicated Jeannette Rankin Fields (listed as Jeanette R Fields) lived at 312 Laurel Avenue and her occupation was listed as clerk at J C Penney.6

Jeannette Rankin Fields married William Henry Pucek, son of (--?--) Pucek.

Jeannette Rankin Fields and William Henry Pucek appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Redding, Shasta County, California at 1377 Willis Street, enumerated 5 April 1940. The home was listed as owned, valued at $1000, and not on a farm. The official date of that census was 01 April 1940. Also in the household were William's brother, Alvin Pucek, and a lodger, Mora Decker. William was listed having lived in Indio, Riverside County, California on 1 Apr 1935 (not on a farm). Jeannette was listed having lived in Phoenix, Arizona on 1 Apr 1935 (not on a farm). William and Jeannette were listed as ages 29 and 22, respectively, both married, and not attending school in March 1940. William was listed as having completed 8 years of schooling and born in Texas. Jeannette was listed as having completed 4 years of high school and born in Arkansas. Both William and Jeannette were listed as employed and not seeking work the week of 24-30 March. He worked 40 hours that week and his occupation was listed as shovel operator on a tunnel construction project. She worked 40 hours that week and her occupation was listed as waitress in a coffee shop asa private industry worker (as was Mora Decker's). Both were listed as working in private industry. He reported 48 weeks worked in 1939, wage income of $1500, and other income (other than wages and salary) in excess of $50. She reported 52 weeks worked in 1939, wage income of $600, and also had other income (other than wages and salary) in excess of $50.7

The 1949 Redding California city directory (published by R L Polk) indicated Jeannette Rankin Fields and William Henry Pucek lived at 377 Willis and his occupation was carpenter.8

The 1951 Redding California city directory (published by R L Polk) indicated Jeannette Rankin Fields and William Henry Pucek lived at 958 Lincoln and his occupation was listed for either of them.9

The 1953 Redding California city directory (published by R L Polk) indicated Jeannette Rankin Fields and William Henry Pucek lived at 937 Gold and his occupation was carpenter.10

Jeannette Rankin Fields died on 28 December 2005 at North Bend, Oregon, at age 89.1,3 She was buried on 21 January 2006 at Redding Memorial Park, Redding, California.1

Jeannette Rankin Fields's Social Security Number was 569-12-1736, issued in California before 1951 (final residence is listed as Redding, Shasta County, Californina).11

Jannette Rankin was the name of the first woman elected to the United States congress (from Montana), in an election held about a week prior to the birth of Janette Rankin Fields. The election returns could have been finalized and the news of Janette Rankin's election known in rural Arkansas within a week (even in a era before regular radio broadcasts, newspapers from, say, Little Rock, Memphis, St. Louis, and New Orleans, would almost certainly be available in Newark via rail no more than a day after they were published). However, the use of the name "Ada G" at the time of the 1920 census suggests that the name Janette Rankin Fields may have been assigned some time after her birth. Ada is the name of the maternal grandmother of Jeanette Rankin Fields.

Mary M. Stephens was born on 22 January 1859 in Missouri.2

22 June 1859 is an alternative date for this birth.3

Mary M. Stephens died on 15 August 1859 at Missouri.4 She was buried at Stephens-Fields Cemetery, Osage County, Missouri. This is a family cemetery on what was formerly the Fields Family property in Osage County (and on a portion of that land later sold to Mary Elizabeth Fields and her husband Thomas Allen Stephens). This cemetery is now overgrown with trees. The name of the cemetery was "assigned" by members of the Osage County Historical Society based on the names on the one marker in the cemetery with legible words engraved on it.5,4

Mary M. Stephens (listed as Mary M Stephens) appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Taylor Township, of Greene County, Missouri in the household of her parents, Thomas Allen Stephens and Mary Smith. She was listed as age 14, born in Missouri. No occupation was listed for her. She did not attend school within a year prior to the official census date. She was listed as able to read and write. No disabilities or other special situations were listed for her. Her father was listed as born in Missouri (while her mother was listed as born in Tennessee.

The handwritten census schedule for this household lists the state of birth of each person in the household. The boys (all born after the marriage of Thomas and Mary) are all listed with both parents born in Tennessee. However, the oldest child (R:withMother) is has her father listed as born in Missouri. This marks her as having a different father, so she is the daughter of the deceased first husband of Mary Smith, who died while in military service in the US Civil War. In her father’s Civil War pension file records, her name is given as Mary Margarett William Reid (and Mary M W Reed on the 1870 census schedule). The placement of her name following her younger brothers (sons of both Thomas and Mary) also suggests that she is not a biological child of the head of the household Thomas Allen Stephens.6

The official date of that census was 15 April 1910. The home was listed as owned, mortgaged, and (apparently) not on a farm (that portion of the handwritten filled-out census schedule is difficult to read; there is something written in the block reserved for the “farm question,” but it appears to be some kind of notation made while processing and/or tabulating the census data). Lindsey Waters Fields and Martha Ann Tayloe were listed as ages 51 and 49, both born in Missouri, both married for 28 years, both in first marriage, and both spoke English as their native language. Both were listed as able to read and write. Lindsey’s occupation was listed as a Sawmill Operator (on his own account, self-employed). No occupation was listed for Martha. Henry Clarence Fields appeared on the census of 1930 at McKinley Township, Douglas County, Missouri.14 He was listed as a retail merchant, general merchandise store in the 1930 census.14

He is said to have had both a store and a lumber yard during this time. He set up a dry kiln, which allowed him to buy green lumber and then dry it or season it. He also planed pieces of lumber and shaped them for use in building houses. The lumber yard is said to have run into financial problems, first from the economic decline following the stock market crash of 1929, and then from restrictions (codes) established by the National Recovery Administration (NRA) under the National Industrial Recovery Act (NIRA) during the Roosevelt administration. These restrictions were apparently an attempt to raise commodity prices. In the lumber industry, the codes clearly raised costs to producers, but it was never clear if they would have eventually raised the prices received by producers. One of these codes prohibited delivering finished lumber more than two miles from where it had been finished (planed, etc.) This was a problem for Henry because the business was located in the country, eight miles from town. He initiated several types of business activities to raise money to pay off bills (and was sucessful in getting all his debts paid off). These businesses -- based on the store -- (apparently) included setting up a food stand at picnics (and other events), where he sold items such as burgers and ice cream.15

Cecil Ambrose Fields was also known as Ambrose Cecil Fields, with his (apparent) first and middle names reversed (the California Master Death Index is an example of where the names are listed in this "reversed" manner).2,3 He was born on 18 May 1905 in Missouri (the California Master Death Index lists his place of birth as Arkansas, which is apparently incorrect).4,2

Cecil Ambrose Fields appeared on the census of 1910 at McKinley, Douglas County, Missouri.5

Cecil Ambrose Fields (listed as Cecil J Fields) appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of McKinley Township, of Douglas County, Missouri in the household of his parents, Lindsey Waters Fields and Martha Ann Tayloe. The official date of that census was 15 April 1910. He was listed as age 4, born Missouri and single.6

Cecil Ambrose Fields appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Rock Creek Township, Searcy County, Arkansas in the household of his parents, Lindsey Waters Fields and Martha Ann Tayloe.1

Cecil Ambrose Fields appeared on the census of 1930 at Okemah, Okfuskee County, Oklahoma.7

Cecil A Fields appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Econtuchka Township, Seminole County, Oklahoma in the household of his sister, Ida May Fields. He was listed as age 24, single, did not attend school, able to read and write, born in Missouri. His occupation was listed as a roustabout in an old field as a worker, but he was not at work the last normal work day prior to when the enumerator visted the household. He seems to have been counted twice in the 1930 census.8

Cecil Ambrose Fields married Della Minick circa 1931.9

Cecil Ambrose Fields and Della Minick appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California at 3688 Sepulveda Boulevard, enumerated 8 April 1940. The home (which may have been a trailer in a "trailer camp") was listed as owned, valued at $200, and not on a farm. The official date of that census was 01 April 1940. Their son Glendale C Fields was listed as living with them. All household members were listed having lived in Seminole, Oklahoma on 1 Apr 1935. Cecil Ambrose Fields and Della Minick were listed as ages 34 and 27, respectively, both married, born in Missouri and Oklahoma, respectively, with 8 and 10 years of schooling, respectively, and not attending school in March 1940. Cecil was listed as unemployed and seeking work the week of 24-30 March, and had been unemployed for three weeks (the form looks like his information was originally written on the wrong line and the schedule was corrected later). His occupation was listed as oil field work in oil fields as a private industry worker. He reported 49 weeks worked in 1939, $1259 in wage income, and had no other income (other than wages and salary) in excess of $50. Della is listed as doing housework, not employed for wages, and not seeking such employment. No occupation was listed for her. No 1939 wage income was reported for her and she did not have non-wage income in excess of $50 in 1939. The population schedule indicates a farm schedule was not filed for this household. Virgil Eugene Fields was listed on at least one document as Virgil N Fields.5 He was probably born on 5 July 1908 in Missouri.1,4 His death certificate (perhaps incorrectly) indicates he may was born on 13 August 1908 in Douglas County, Missouri.2

Virgil Eugene Fields appeared on the census of 1910 in McKinley, Douglas County, Missouri.6

Virgil Eugene Fields (listed as Virgil Fields) appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of McKinley Township, of Douglas County, Missouri in the household of his parents, Lindsey Waters Fields and Martha Ann Tayloe. The official date of that census was 15 April 1910. He was listed as age 1 9/12 (but as only 1 by the Ancestry transcriber), born Missouri and single.7

Virgil Eugene Fields appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Rock Creek Township, Searcy County, Arkansas in the household of his parents, Lindsey Waters Fields and Martha Ann Tayloe.5

Virgil Eugene Fields appeared on the census of 1930 at Okemah, Okfuskee County, Oklahoma.8

Virgil Eugene Fields lived circa 1935 at Possum Trot, Missouri.9 Virgil Eugene Fields's was a preacher circa 1935.9

Virgil Eugene Fields died on 3 May 1936 at Texas County, Missouri, at age 27. His death certificate indicates the cause of death was from injuries from an automobile accident and was instantaneous. However, a news article from the 7 May 1936 issue of The Willow Springs News indicates the death certificate is somewhat misleading. The news story states he had been in an altercation at Hartley's filling station and cafe near Mountain Grove, Missouri. He was stabbed "near the heart" during the altercation. The article seems to indicate he had been driving around with "relatives and friends", but it contiues that he drove off (apparently alone and apparently to seek medical attention in or near Cabool). He was then in the fatal accident, running into the rear of a truck. The death certificate indicates he was buried in Seminole County, Oklahoma. However, that might have been the location (e.g., rail station) his remains were shipped to.2,10

Carl Fields located his death certificate (indicating only that he had died in a automobile accident) several years before coming upon the news article that indicated a stabbing during an altercation prior to the fatal accident. Carl was aware of the family legend concering his death. The version Carl had heard was that he had died in Oklahoma in the parking lot of a bar (roadhouse) in Oklahoma from injuries from a fight. In addition, Carl Fields has a vague recollection of hearing or reading this event occurred in 1931 (which would have been during prohbition). This legend is inconsistent with information on his death certificate -- and somewhat inconsistent with the news article, although the news article seems closer to the family folklore. Before finding the news article (in May 2015), Carl suspected (incorrectly) the family folklore story might have developed from confusion with his nephew, Earl Casey, who died in what may have been a similar roadhouse altercation a few months later in 1936.11,10 Virgil Eugene Fields's occupation was listed as laborer, oil fields on his death certificate.2

Virgil Eugene Fields may have married a woman named Faye (--?--). Virgil Eugene Fields's death certificate indicated he had been married to a woman whose first name was Faye, and who had predeceased him. As of Jan 2016, Carl Fields has not found any additional information about her, including any confirmation she ever existed. At least one of the few family members with direct memories of him surviving in 2016 doubted that he was ever married.2,12
