Daryl Eugene Fields was born on 6 January 1927 in Minnesota.4,1,3

Darryl Fields appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Mounton Township, Murray County, Minnesota in the household of his parents, Byron Fields and Lelia Moore Smith. The official date of that census was 01 April 1940. He was listed as: age 13, single, attended school during March 1940, had completed six years of schooling, born in Minnesota, and lived on a farm in rural Rock County, Minnesota on 1 Apr 1935.4,5

Between approximately 1943 an (ages 14-18), while living at Luverne, Rock County, MInnesota, he worked for his father as a farm hand. He later stated he was paid $20 per week for this. The farm was described as 320 acres and included a dairy. His duties included planting, harvesting, operating a tractor, and caring for animals. He was said to have been a member of the Minnesota State Guard from 1943 until 1946. This was apparently a largely standby state defense force organized to provide protection and security, as needed, during World War II, when the Minnesota National Guard had been federalized and was assigned to duty outside the state.6

Daryl Eugene Fields entered military service in the US Navy on 15 March 1946 at Mankato, Minnesota. His home address at that time was Luverne, Rock County, Minnesota (sometimes the mailing address was listed as Route 1, Luverne and sometimes General Delivery, Luverne). The military records are unclear as to whether he had completed 8, 9, or 10 years of school as of that time. His religion was listed as Protestant. His military serial number was 787 45 11.

A physical examination at that time (when he was 19) indicated he was 5 ft 4.5 inches tall and weighed 125 pounds. It also indicated he had blue eyes, blond hair, a “ruddy” complexion, normal color perception, and 20/20 vision in both eyes, at both near and far distances (he still had the perfect eyesight at the end of his service almost two years later). His wisdom teeth had apparently been removed prior to him entering the military. Some additional dental work was done soon after he entered the Navy but the nature of it is unclear. Records from physical exams at different times during his service in the Navy are unclear as to whether his blood type was “O” or “A”.

He went through Navy Recruit Training in San Diego with the rating of Apprentice Seaman (AS, salary: $50 per month). That training was completed on 17 May 1946, at which time he was promoted to Seaman 2nd Class (S2C).

It was apparently normal to be granted leave (furlough) to return home for perhaps two weeks at the end of Recruit Training. However, this was not granted when he finished training because of the unusual circumstance of a nationwide rail strike in progress. The leave was deferred until “the earliest practicable convenience”. However, he was apparently never able to take that leave. He may have been discharged some weeks before the end of his (nominally) “2-year” enlistment to compensate for this.

Instead of being granted leave, he was apparently sent to Treasure Island in the San Francisco area to await transport to his first assignment, which was shore duty at the Naval Supply Center at Guam (and which turned out to be his only “permanent” assignment). He left for Guam on 9 July 1946. His specific duties at Guam are not specifically given in his personnel records. While there, he received small arms training. He also passed the course to qualify as a Seaman First Class (S1C) and was promoted to that grade.

His time on Guam “counted” as “sea duty and/or duty outside the continental US”. In addition, the US was still technically at war with Japan and Germany throughout 1946, so his service during that year technically qualified him as a World War II veteran. He was awarded the Victory Medal (apparently the only medal he received).

He left Guam on 27 Nov 1947 to return to the US for discharge. He was discharged at Alameda Naval Air Station on 2 Jan 1948 (although he was apparently paid for time up until 9 Jan 1948). His final pay upon discharge was $476.61, which included $102.70 for “mileage” to cover his travel back to Minnesota (and may have also included pay for some of the leave time he was unable to take earlier).7,8

In the early morning hours of 6 July 1948 brothers Daryl Eugene Fields and Leroy W. Fields were in a serious truck accident about six miles north of Hebron, Nebraska. Daryl Eugene Fields was killed. Leroy W. Fields suffered painful, but not life-threatening or permanently disabling injuries. At that time, both brothers lived in Luverne, Minnesota.

They were transporting two farm tractors and other farm machinery in a flat-bed tractor and semi-trailer rig from Luverne to Medford, Oklahoma. They had left Luverne about 5 PM on Monday, July 5th. The accident took place around 2:50 AM. At that time, Daryl was driving, while Leroy was sleeping inside an army sleeping bag under one of the tractors on the semi-trailer.

Daryl is believed to have fallen asleep while driving. The rig ran into a deep ditch, likely killing Daryl instantly (a newspaper article describing the accident suggested the rig may also have sheared off a wooden utility pole alongside the highway and noted that the accident took place at one of the relatively few locations in that stretch of highway where a deep ditch is alongside the road). A heavy-duty wrecker had to be brought in to remove the wrecked trailer (and its load) in order to reach the cab containing Daryl's body. The article refers to Leroy W. Fields as Roy Fields.

The parents of the two brothers, Byron Fields and Lelia Moore Smith, had moved from Luverne Minnesota to Colorado circa 1947. In July 1948, they were visiting family members in the Luverne Minnesota area. They drove to the Hebron, Nebraska, area after learning of the accident.8

Daryl Eugene Fields died on 6 July 1948 about six miles north of Hebron, Nebraska, at age 21. He is believed to have died around 2:50 AM.1,2,3,8 He was buried at Maplewood Cemetery, Luverne, Rock County, Minnesota.1,9,3,10

This address had been the residence of Miles Baldwin at the time of the 1930 census (with Raymond Theis then living in the home as a boarder). Miles Baldwin does not seem to have been listed in the 1939 city directory for Sanger (his wife had died in 1937).4

Raymond Russell Theis and Sarah Elizabeth Johnson appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Fresno, Fresno County, California at 1224 Ville Avenue (rear), enumerated 12 April 1940. The home was listed as rented, for $8 per month, and not on a farm. The official date of that census was 01 April 1940. Raymond was listed as unemployed and seeking work the week of 24-30 March, and had been unemployed for 24 weeks. His occupation was listed as a laborer in road construction as a private industry worker. He reported 29 weeks worked in 1939, $560 in wage income, and had no other income (other than wages and salary) in excess of $50. Sarah is listed as doing housework, not employed for wages, and not seeking such employment. No occupation was listed for her. No 1939 wage income was reported for her and she did not have non-wage income in excess of $50 in 1939. The population schedule indicates a farm schedule was not filed for this household.5

Lee Scott married Ruth May Fields, daughter of Charles Anson Fields and Zona Collins, on 25 May 1938, possibly in Howell County, Missouri. The marriage license was issued in Howell County, which is adjacent to Douglas County. One source (based on memories long after the wedding) gives the location as near a community called Possum Trot, probably in south-central Missouri, where Henry C (Bill) Fields had a store and lumber yard. This is almost certainly a different "Possum Trot" than the apparently-better-known former community in Southwest, Missouri, near Springfield.1,2

Lee Scott and Ruth May Fields appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of at Clinton Township, Douglas County, Missouri, enumerated 22 April 1940, The home was listed as rented for one dollar per month, and on a farm. The official date of that census was 01 April 1940. Their son Glenn Scott was listed as living with them His son Glenn Scott was listed as living with him, Both adult household members were listed having lived in the same house on 1 Apr 1935 (although they did not marry until 1938). Lee Scott and Ruth May Fields were listed as ages 23 and 22, respectively, both married, born in Colorado and Missouri, respectively, with 8 and 9 years of schooling, respectively, and neither attended school in March 1940. Lee was listed as employed in emergency work (W.P.A), with a period of unemployment listed as 38 weeks. His occupation was listed as laborer on road construction and doing government work. He reported no weeks worked in 1939, no wage income, and no other income (other than wages and salary) in excess of $50. Ruth is listed as doing housework, not employed for wages, and not seeking such employment. No occupation was listed for her. No 1939 wage income was reported for her and she did not have non-wage income in excess of $50 in 1939. The population schedule indicates a farm schedule was not filed for this household.3

His is said to have been descended from some of the oldest settlers in the Eastern Douglas County area.2
