The row on the census form for Stephen Kass, son of the head of household, seems to indicate he may have provided some information for members of the household. However, the form also apparently indicates he was two months old. Therefore, that is probably a stray mark.

All the residents of the institution (including staff, or that portion of the staff that apparently lived within the compound) were treated as a single household. Staff members were listed first, then patients, who were listed in several groups, with each group listed in alphabetical order by surname. This suggested the patients names (and possibly other information) came from a some type of records, such as a roster. Philip Levine was not listed as head of a household.

  • [S1036] Abraham Pavlovsky grave marker, Congregation Shari Tephalo/Congregation Beth Mordecai/Hebrew Progressive Cemeteries, Florida Grove Road, Perth Amboy, New Jersey; read by Carl Fields, approx 2006.

    There are three adjacent Jewish cemeteries at this location, some of which have had more than one name during their history (so the current name may not correspond to the name on, say, an older death certificate and burial record). The three cemeteries have separate gates and exterior wall designs (for the walls facing Florida Grove Road), but once inside a gate, there are (as of 2013) no internal barriers separating one cemetery from the others. Thus, in some cases, it is unclear which of the three cemeteries a specific grave "belongs" to. The three cemeteries appear to be inside the current (2013) city limits of Perth Amboy. However, they are probably close to a city limit and may be in an adjacent municipality. It is likely they were outside the Perth Amboy city limits (possibly in Woodbridge Township) at the time of the earliest burials. Also, the street name (Florida Grove Road in 2013) may have been different in a earlier era (e.g., circa1920s). The southwest corner of the cluster of three adjacent cemeteries is at the northwest corner of the intersection of Florida Grove Road and Bingle Street.

    At least one of these three cemeteries (Congregation Shari Tephalo Cemetery) is maintained by Friends for Preservation of Middlesex County Jewish Cemeteries, Inc.; P. O. Box 306; Moorestown, NJ 08057; phone: 856-222-1418; (http://www.friendsofjewishcemeteries.org : accessed 25 July 2013). This is one of several articles accessed by Carl Fields via microfilm at the Perth Amboy New Jersey public library on 30 Aug 2011. Most (but not all) of these articles were obituaries or death notices. Digital photographs were taken off the microfilm viewer viewscreen. In a few instances, Carl neglected to record the page number of the issue of the newspaper where the article appeared (or else the page number is uncertain for other reasons). In some cases, obituaries and death notices may have been confused with one another. In a few instances, the same issue of the newspaper contained both a death notice and an obituary (usually on the same page). The name of the newspaper changed a few times starting in the 1960s, apparently due to reorganizations and mergers. The dates in these citations refer to when the news article appeared, which was almost always at least a day after the event described in the article took place.

    Microfilm images from issues published between approximately mid-1922 to mid-1923 were examined by Carl Fields at the Independence County library around June 13, 2015. Items relating to individuals and families covered in this database were photographed. The reason Carl was examining these particular issues was that they included issues from 1923. Carl was interested in finding an obituary for Alma Childress (whose married surname was Craig). He knew (from a grave marker) that she died in 1923, but probably did not previously know her actual date of death. Digital images (from photographs) are retained in Carl Fields electronic/digital files (TMG Version 9.05 Exhibits Folder). As this is written (24 Aug 2015), Carl hopes to return to the Independence County Library some future time to examine microfilm images of additional issues of this newspaper.

    Hi Carl - Yes, Ira was a teacher at Clemson He was fun to be with. I didn't see much of him. He did some quirky things which he told me himself - such as the time he departed a bus dragging a leg, drawing sympathy from the passengers. As soon as he reached the ground, he ran parallel to the vehicle in effect telling them "ha, ha" "fooled you".

    The few times he was in NJ, with us, he spent most of his time with my brother Howard.

    Sorry that my bad memory can't think of anything else -age lapse. I hope you and your family are well. Stan

    I wonder if you remember anything about Ira Slobodien (1925-1998). He was the son of Jacob (Jack?) Slobodien.

    I ran across something yesterday indicating he graduated from Clemson University (here in South Carolina, where I live -- but not close; Clemson is probably a 2.5-hour drive away) in (I think) 1947 (his undergrad career was interrupted by Navy service in WW2).

    The info I received from you a few years ago gave occupation as college professor. I have (from somewhere) that he lived in Berkeley CA and Oakland CA, perhaps in the 1970s and 1980s.

    I wondered if he taught at UC Berkley. It occurred to me that my sister may have attended Berkeley as a student and he might have been on the faculty at the same time (and, I suspect, they would have been unaware of each other's existence).

    I have no idea what he would have taught. The stuff I saw yesterday indicated he received his undergrad degree at Clemson with a major in General Science. But the next year he was an Instructor at Clemson in the English department!

  • [S1583] Robert Hampton Wiggins Jr., Editor-in-Chief, Taps (South Carolina: Clemson University, 1947).

    This book was viewed as a pdf downloaded from the following web site: (https://archive.org/stream/taps1947clem/… : accessed 1 Aug 2016). The site initially "came up" in text-only format (some type of an OCR conversion, apparently). However, by scrolling to the beginning of the file, there were "buttons" that allowed switching to other document formats, including pdf, which provided page images, including photos. The pdf version is located at: (https://ia601701.us.archive.org/5/items/taps1947clem/… : accessed 1 Aug 2016). The book could also be accessed (and downloaded as a pdf) via the following web site in February 2017: http://tigerprints.clemson.edu/yearbooks/45/. In the 1940s, Clemson was apparently a military school (at least in part). The college seems to have basically "emptied out" of civilian students during World War 2 and (it appears) no yearbooks were published. The 1947 yearbook includes those few students who graduated in 1944, 1945, and 1946 (all of whom seemed to have been in the military at the time of their graduation).

    What follows is the text of what appears associated with the photo of Ira Slobodien (Class of 1947 -- apparently no yearbook edition was published in 1944, 1945, or 1946; graduates from those years seem to have been "picked up" in the 1947 yearbook):

    "IRA SHELDON SLOBODIEN "Slo"

    Plainsville, New Jersey

    CANDIDATE FOR BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREE IN GENERAL SCIENCE

    Private; Corporal; First Lieutenant; Veteran; "Tiger" Staff 4; Brandeis 1, 2, 3, 4;
    Clemson Forensic Society 2, 3; Carnegie Music Society 2, 3, 4; Tiger Platoon 2, 3;
    Honors 1, 2, 3."

    Clemson was then an all-male "military school" (which apparently meant that all -- or perhaps almost all -- student had to also be in the ROTC corps of cadets). The "Private; Corporal; First Lieutenant" in his summary of activities (above) apparenlty reflects his grades in the Clemson Corps of Cadets. His actual military service during World War II was in the Navy, which has different grades.

  • [S1713] Clemson Agricultural College Record: Fifty-Fifth Year: Catalog Number1947-1948: Preliminary Announcements 1948-1949, New Series XXII, No. 1 (South Carolina: Clemson University, April 1948).

    This book was viewed as a pdf downloaded from the following web site: (https://archive.org/stream/taps1947clem/… : accessed 1 Aug 2016). The pdf version is located at (http://tigerprints.clemson.edu/clemson_catalog/103/: accessed February 21).

    This seems to basically be the college "catalog". It contains, among other things, a list of faculty members effective November 1, 1947. It also described awards for academic achivement made during the 1946-1947 academic year.
