Isabella Henderson CCF Notes (3-12-2008) -- I'm bothered by various inconsistencies in this family over the years and suspect that I have at least one source document from some other family mixed in with the family I'm really concerned with. Also, it is possible that Andrew Wheatley (from 1851 census) might be the same person who is called George Wheatly in later source documents.

Between 1910 and 1920 Abraham Pavlovsky's occupation was listed in various ways, all closely associated with the meat business. In 1910 the business was described as butchers. After that year, the nature of the business was generally described as "meat," up until 1929, when it was described as a grocer. Most years the business was called the Pavlovsky Brothers. In some years, the city directory included the names of the brothers as part of the name of the business, such as "(Louis and Abe)" or "(Abraham and Louis)". In addtion, three city directories (1916, 1917, and 1918) provided an additional business name, Economy Grocery Company.

The city directories for 1925 and 1926 mentioned the meat business, but did not provide a specific business name. Sophia Slatkoff was born on 10 November 1891 in Russia.3,4

Sophia Slatkoff entered the United States at New York, New York, on 27 August 1912 together with Rachel Golosoff, Sophia Slatkoff, Anna Slatkoff and Samuel Philip Slatkoff (the ship seems to have arrived in New York harbor one day earlier on 26 Aug 1912). They traveled (using the family surname transcribed as Zigalnitsky by ellisland.org and as Zlatkowska and Zlotkowska by Ancestry.com) on board the SS Neckar, which was operated by the North German Lloyd (Nord Deutcher Lloyd) line. They had sailed from Bremen Germany on 15 August 1912. The Neckar passenger list indicates: (1) the group traveled as steerage passengers; (2) they apparently entered the US with $5 among them (or possibly $51, the amount is difficult to read); (3) their “last permanent residence” had been Berdianski (Berdjansk); (4) their final destination in the US was Perth Amboy, New Jersey; and (5) they intended to join a relative, Moshe Leib Segal, Rose’s brother-in-law, who lived at 292 or 293 Hall Avenue (Moses was known as Moshe within the family; his first name is spelled “Moshy” in the response to the “US contact” question on the passenger manifest) and who had also apparently paid for their transatlantic passage. The listed occupation for Rose and Sophia (Yetta on the passenger list) is “seller.” The listed occupation for Sarah is apparently a laborer. The manifest mentions a person named Kaje Faraurnos (or something similar to that) as a contact back in their home country. He is apparently a brother (or possibly a brother-in-law) to Rose (Rose was also known as Rachel). Kaje is listed as living in Taurdia Guberniya, Russia in August 1912, but (as of October 2013) nothing else is known about him.5

Sophia Slatkoff married Boris Isidor Rabiner, son of Isidor Rabiner and Rose (--?--), in 1914 at New Jersey.6,1,7,8

Boris Isidor Rabiner's name was listed incorrectly in various documents, such as his surname (and, when the error was in a census form, the surname for everyone in the family) being listed as Robinson and Robiner.3 He was born on 25 July 1888 at Zaslan Wolhynia, Russia.4

Boris Isidor Rabiner immigrated circa 1906 to the United States.5,6

Between 1912 and 1918 Boris Isidor Rabiner lived at 159 Hall Avenue, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.

Between 1912 and c1926 Boris Isidor Rabiner's occupation was generally listed as druggist at 159 Hall Avenue, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey. He was apparently self-employed as the owner or co-owner of a business. In the 1912 and 1913 city directories, the name of the business was listed as Rabiner & Chess. In the 1922-1926 city directories, it seemed to be listed as owned by a partnership called Rabiner & Slatkoff, although the business was identified as Rabiner's Pharmacy in some of those city directories (Samuel Slatkoff, also a pharmacist, was the brother of Rabiner's wife). The 1914 city directory seems to suggest he owned a second drug store at that time, perhaps at 267 Smith Street, Perth Amboy. The 1923 and 1924 city directores also list him as the president of National Pharmacy Stores, Inc. During the years when the residence and business were at the same address, the family probably lived in an apartment over the store (commerical buildings of this type, many of which still existed as of c2005, were very common in Perth Amboy in the 1910-1930 era).

Boris Isidor Rabiner married Sophia Slatkoff, daughter of Pertiz Slatkoff and Rachel Golosoff, in 1914 at New Jersey.5,7,8,9

Pearl was not listed as attending school after September 1, 1919.7 Boris Isidor Rabiner was listed as a druggist, with this own store, in the 1920 census (despite this "own store" entry, the census seemed to indicate he was a "worker," rather than being self employed).7

Between 1920 and the end of his life, Boris Isidor Rabiner lived at 140 Kearney Avenue, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.

Between c1927 and the end of his life, Boris Isidor Rabiner's occupation was generally listed as operating at Hospital Pharmacy, at 471 New Brunswick Avenue, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey. The listings for this enterprise differed from year to year, sometimes listing the name (with no address), sometimes listing the address (with no name), and sometimes both the name and the address were listed. In several city directories (between 1935 and 1949), he was listed as the president-treasurer of Hospital Pharmacies, Inc.
