Several variations of her given name appear in various records, including Sadye, Sarah, and Sonia, with Sadye the most common later in her life. Sadie Slobodien is said to have been born on 11 May 1887 in Russia. The earliest records indicate she was born in Russia and immigrated as a child, but some later records list the location of her birth as New York and as New Jersey. The 1900 census indicates she was born in May 1886 in Russia.4

Sadie Slobodien immigrated in 1888 to the United States from Russia.3

Sadye Slobodien entered the United States at New York, New York, on 6 June 1888 together with Joseph Slobodien, Fannie Ziegelnietski and Jacob Slobodien. They traveled (under a surname Ancestry.com transcribed as Stobogen) on board the SS State of Nevada, which was operated by the State line. They had sailed from Glasgow, Scotland. The State of Nevada passenger list indicates: (1) the group traveled as steerage passengers; (2) they planned to settle permanently in the United States; and (3) they had one piece of luggage among them (this may have referred to something like “checked” luggage that traveled in the ship’s hold). Joseph and Jacob both seem to be listed as merchants. They arrived before the US federal government began to control immigration (and opened Ellis Island to facilitate control). Fewer items of information were recorded about each person entering the US under this older system of state (or possibly city) immigration control.

They had left Hamburg, Germany for Scotland (traveling under a surname Ancestry.com transcribed as Slabogen) aboard a ship called Cumberland on 18 May 1888, going to Leith, on the east coast of Scotland (near Edinburgh). Cumberland apparently did not have cabin classes (and may not have had cabins at all; it may have been more like a an overnight or perhaps multiple-night ferry. They probably crossed Scotland by train, but this is not certain. The passenger list (written in German) for the trip outbound from Germany listed their previous residence as “Bobrausk, Russland” and the occupations of Joseph and Jacob as “Händler” (which can mean merchant –- among other related meanings).5

Sadie Slobodien appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey in the household of her parents, Joseph Slobodien and Fannie Ziegelnietski, at 3 Hobart Street (Ward 3)..3

Sadie Slobodien appeared on the New Jersey state census of 1905 at Perth Amboy, 3rd Ward, Middlesex County, New Jersey.1

Sadie Slobodien married Herman David Bob, son of Gedalle Bob and Ida Goldman, on 3 June 1906 at Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.4

Sadie Slobodien appeared on the census of 1910 at 439 Jefferson Avenue, Brooklyn, Kings County, New York.7

Sadie Slobodien and Herman David Bob appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Brooklyn, Kings County, New York at 1703 Avenue K, enumerated 19 February 1920. The home was listed as owned (unknown if it was mortgaged). The official date of that census was 01 January 1920. Their children Madeline E Bob and Irving Jay Bobb were listed as living with them, along with Elizabeth Keane, a private nurse, and Katherine Syrak, a servant, both listed as single. All of the adult members of the household were listed as being able to read and write. Both children were listed as attending school after September 1, 1919.2

Sadie Slobodien and Herman David Bob appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of the Borough of Brooklyn (New York City), Kings County, New York at the Granada Hotel, enumerated 2 April 1940. The home was listed as rented, but no monthly rental amount is given. The official date of that census was 01 April 1940. A notation on the sheet is apparently intended to indicate all household members were listed having lived in the same place on 1 Apr 1935 (as, indeed, was everyone on that sheet of the census schedule, which invites a bit of skepticism). Herman David Bob and Sadie Slobodien were listed as ages 57 and 53, respectively, both not attending school in March 1940. Herman is listed as having completed 1 year of formal schooling, born in Poland, and being a naturalized citizen. Sadie is listed as having completed 4 years of high school, born in Russia, and being a naturalized citizen. Herman was listed as working 48 hours the week of 24-30. His occupation was listed as an executive in the shirt manufacturing industry as a private industry worker. He is listed as having been employed for 52 weeks in 1939 and had salary in excess of $5000. He is listed as having other (non-wage) income in excess of $50. Sadie was listed as doing housework and not working for wages or seeking such work. No occupation or 1939 wage income is listed for her, but she is listed as having non-wage income in excess of $50.

The census schedule does not seem to give the street address of the Granada Hotel. However, a brief Internet search indicated it was at 268 Ashland Place at or near the intersection of Ashland and Lafayette Avenue (and across the street from the Brooklyn Academy of Music). A few web sites containing information about the hotel were located in early August 2012, including: (http://easybeinggreene.wordpress.com/2007/10/22/past-uncovered-the-hotel-granada : accessed 4 August 2012 by Carl Fields). The 15- or 16-storey-tall hotel apparently had both apartments for long-term rentals and transient rooms and suites (baseball teams visiting Brooklyn to play the Dodgers are said to have sometimes stayed there in the 1930s and 1940s). It is unclear if the Bob family household had a longer-term apartment, or if they were there for only a short stay at the time of the census. The building was completed around 1927 and demolished in 1994.8 She lived on 9 September 1941 at 41 Fifth Avenue, New York, Manhattan Borough, New York.9

Sadie Slobodien died on 12 December 1947 at age 60 (the location of her death is unknown as of June 2014; a search performed by the New York Archives failed to locate a death certificate for either a Sadie or Sadye Bob for a death in either Manhattan or Brooklyn).10 She was buried at Mount Lebanon Cemetery, Glendale, Queens County, New York.10

The 1915 census and city directory suggest he managed a shoe store at 362 State Street (not the address of the long-time family-operated Slobodien Shoe Store). His 1917 World War I draft registration suggests he was a self-employed merchant. The 1918 Perth Amboy city directory indicates he managed, was employed by, or was associated with two stores, a shoe store at 174 Smith Street and a men's furnishings store at 275 Smith Street.

Notes and Observations: Her death date is unknown. A woman named Rose Schwartz is listed in the Social Security Master Death Index (SSDI, Social Security Number 145-09-4454) with a birth date of 18 February 1893 (consistent with the Rose Slobodien Schwartz). The Rose Schwartz listed in the SSDI died in September 1993 (at age 100!), with her last known residence listed as Columbia, South Carolina. It is believed this South Carolina Rose Schwartz was not Rose Slobodien Schwartz. Stanley Slobodien told Carl Fields (in a phone conversation) around 2007 that he thought his (Stanley's) Aunt Rose had died many years prior to 1993. The Fannie Slobodien will, written in 1944, does not mention her daughter Rose, nor does that will list Rose's son, Harold Schwartz, as among her grandchildren. The will does mention Fannie's daughter Sadye Bobb (even though nothing was left to Sadye in the will) and it also mentions son, John Slobodien, who was deceased in 1944.15

His residence was listed in 1918 as 109 Market Street, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey. This probably represents a permanent home address.1

Jacob Slobodien was born in December 1864 in Russia (the 1905 New Jersey state census puts his birth as Jan 1865).2,11,9

Jacob Slobodien entered the United States at New York, New York, on 6 June 1888 together with Joseph Slobodien, Fannie Ziegelnietski and Sadye Slobodien.

The passenger list (written in German) for the trip outbound from Germany listed their previous residence as “Bobrausk, Russland” and the occupations of Joseph and Jacob as “Händler” (which can mean merchant –- among other related meanings).12

Jacob Slobodien appeared on the New Jersey state census of 1895 at 2nd Ward, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.6

Jacob Slobodien was associated with his brother, Joseph Slobodien, in the shoe store business in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, during much of the time from the early 1890s until approximately the mid-1910s at Perth Amboy, New Jersey.

Jacob Slobodien appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey in the household of Joseph Slobodien and Fannie Ziegelnietski, at 3 Hobart Street (Ward 3)..9 Jacob Slobodien was was listed as a shoe dealer in the 1900 census.9

Jacob Slobodien is listed as a "pioneer member" of the Shaarey Tefiloh Congregation (synagogue) circa 1903.13

Jacob Slobodien appeared on the New Jersey state census of 1905 at 127 Smith Street (3rd Ward), Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.5 He was listed as a shoe dealer in the 1905 New Jersey state census.5

Jacob Slobodien appeared on the census of 1910 at 143a Smith Street, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.15 The address, 143a Smith Street, is probably the same building as the one listed as 127 Smith Street the previous few years. Many (perhaps all) Perth Amboy street numbers changed around 1908. He was listed as proprietor, shoe store in the 1910 census. His occupation was listed as J Slobodien and Bro., Reliable Shoes, 143 Smith Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey, in the 1910 Perth Amboy city directory.15

Jacob Slobodien married Sophia Finklestein, daughter of (--?--) Finklestein, on 23 March 1911.11,10,16

Phillip Slobodien was born on 13 October 1861 at Harkov, Russia, (see the note near the end of this narrative about "Harkov.")8

Phillip Slobodien married Chava Zatulovsky, daughter of Aaron Zatulovsky and Bella (?), on 17 February 1882 at Bobryck, Russia.8

Phillip Slobodien immigrated circa 1885 to the United States from Russia.10

Phillip Slobodien is listed as one of the "newly arrived Jewish men" who "formed the First Perth Amboy Hebrew Mutual Aid Society. This group was a fraternal association that provided varous mutual benefits to its members. Its first meetings were held in the home of Morris Slobodien at 79 Smith Street." This organization apparently evolved into the Shaarey Telfioh congregation, although the congregation seems to have met at private homes for some years until the first building with that name was constructed in 1891.11

Phillip Slobodien was naturalized in 1895.8,9

Phillip Slobodien appeared on the New Jersey state census of 1895 at 2nd Ward, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.5 He is believed to have been a blacksmith in the 1890s.8

Phillip Slobodien and Chava Zatulovsky appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Carteret, Woodbridge Township, Middlesex County, New Jersey, enumerated 8 June 1900. The residence was listed as a home (not a farm) and was owned with a mortgage. The official date of that census was 01 June 1900. This census is unique in that month and year of birth were requested for each individual, in additon to each individual's age at the official census date. Their children Sophia F. Slobodien, Isaac Slobodien, Ina Slobodien, Bessie Slobodien, Rose Slobodien, Abraham Slobodien and Isabelle Slobodien were listed as living with them. Everyone in the household age 10 and over was listed as being able to read, write, and speak English. The three oldest children in the household were listed as having attended school 10 months the previous year, while the youngest child, Rose (age 6) was listed as having attended 6 months. Chava Zatulovsky was listed as the mother of seven children, with all of them living as of the date of the census.10 Phillip Slobodien was listed as a saloonkeeper in the 1900 census.10

Phillip Slobodien was a founding member (circa 1903) of B'nai Zion Camp No. 20, "the first organization in Perth Amboy that supported both education and Zionism. Their first project was a Hebrew school that would teach children the Hebrew language exclusively -- rather than Hebrew translated into Yiddish, as was customary in those days." This school was named the Hebrew Institute of Perth Amboy, located in a former Baptist church on Fayette and Mechanic Streets.12

Phillip Slobodien is listed as a "pioneer member" of the Shaarey Tefiloh Congregation (synagogue) circa 1903.13

From between 6 June 1903 and 9 June 1903, Phillip Slobodien, Philip Levine, and A. Beckhoff attended the sixth annual convention of the Federation of American Zionists as delegates from Perth Amboy, New Jersey. This convention was held at Turners Hall, Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, (with Pittsburg apparently spelled without the letter "h" at the end, at that time). Turners is a set of German-ethnic meeting halls that normally include athletic facilities. Many urban areas in the northern US had Turners (or Turner's) Halls around the beginning of the 1900s.14

In 1904 he was involved in a legal case in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, that had an unusual ruling. One of the witnesses was an known athiest. When he was sworn in to testify (using the phrase, "so help me God"), one of the attorneys objected to allowing him to testify, since (the attorney claimed) the witness's oath could not be relied on, because he (the witness) did not believe in God. The judge allowed the testimony on the grounds that the witness considered that the oath bound him to testify truthfully. This was an unusual enough situation that it was reported in at least one "our of town" newspaper. This may have been the same court case (involving a thrown bottle of beer) that is discussed below).15

On 27 February 1905 the Supreme Court of New Jersey ruled against Phillip Slobodien and in favor of Nathan Roth in a civil suit to recover damages for an assault and battery committed by Phillip Slobodien in throwing a beer bottle at Nathan Roth. This ruling affirmed a previous decision by the district court of Perth Amboy. The text of the ruling is rather puzzling (as, indeed, much of the case may have been) and gives few details of the circumstances (nor does it give the date of the original incident). The court noted that "the battery seems to have been committed after much provocation" but that did not provide justification "in the eyes of the law". This ruling (about provocation not providing justification) seems to have been cited as a precedent in many other cases since 1904. The case has been described in varying degrees of detail in several law textbooks written during the 20th century.16

In late February 1907 (on or about the Washington's Birthday holiday), Phillip Slobodien was a guest speaker at the celebration of the "tenth birthday" of Local 81 of the Bartender's Union, in or near Holyoke, Massachusetts. He was introduced as the new proprietor of the Empire Hotel (formerly the Becker) in Holyoke. He said in his speech that in his earlier days he had been deeply interested in the welfare of labor unions. (This heading of this article contains an apparent typographical error: "Miss." should almost certainly be "Mass.")17

Phillip Slobodien appeared on the census of 1910 at Rahway Avenue, Roosevelt Boro, Middlesex County, New Jersey.18 He was listed as a hotel keeper in the 1910 census.18 He was listed as a manager in the 1912 Perth Amboy city directory.4

Phillip Slobodien lived in 1912 at 322 Fayette Street, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.4

Phillip Slobodien owned Eagle Wine and Liquor, a store, probably circa 1914 in Colorado?8

Phillip Slobodien and Chava Zatulovsky appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Newark, Essex County, New Jersey at 71 Runyon Street, enumerated January 1920. The home was listed as rented (and was apparently an apartment; the census listed two other households as the same street address). The official date of that census was 01 January 1920. Their children Erica (Ema) Slobodien, Abraham Slobodien, Isabelle Slobodien, Leo Slobodien, Mildred Slobodien, David Slobodien and Saul Slobodien were listed as living with them. All of the members of the household were listed as being able to read and write. David, Leo, Mildred, Saul, and Erica were listed as attending school after September 1, 1919.9 Phillip Slobodien was listed as a merchant doing business on his own account in the 1920 census.9

Phillip Slobodien and Chava Zatulovsky were separated circa 1920.8

Phillip Slobodien died on 9 March 1925 at Kansas City, Missouri, at age 63.8 He was buried on 30 December 1925 at Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey. His grave marker identifies the year of his death as 1926.8,7

Notes and Observations: Family folklore is that he was a blacksmith (before 1900), a store owner (deparment store or general store), and a hotel and saloon keeper at various other times in his life.

This name likely refers to the area historically known as Kharkov (Russian name) or Kharkiv (Ukranian Name). It is currenlty (2017) in northeast Ukraine. However, in the 1800s it was within the Russian empire.

This town is not close to the other towns associated with this family, which are in current-day (2017) Belarus. It is possible, of course, that travel (or relocation for a few years) could have led to one child in a family being born in a town distant from other children in the same family. However, it is also possible that the birthplace "Harkov" could have incorrectly become associated with Philip Slobodien due to confusion among his descendents and/or later later family history researchers.

The city of Kharkov (Kharkiv) is currently in a oblast (province) now knonw as Kharkiv. However, between apbut 1765 and 1835,this region was known as Sloboda Ukraine Gubernia. After 1835, until at least the end of the 1800s, it was known as Kharkov Gubernia. The word "sloboda" is sometimes said to mean "freedom," but a more precise definition is something like "settlement or area free tax obligations or urban regulations".

Because of the name associations described in the preceding paragraph, it is possible that the family name "Slobodien" was somehow incorrectly associated with the "Harkov" (Kharkov) city and/or region.19

Morris Slobodien appears to have been recorded under the name Harry Slobodien in the 1900 US census.37 He was born on 1 March 1858 at Bobryck, Russia.2,33

Several documents list either the month and year of birth (or his age, from which an approximate year of birth can be inferred). These documents provide a range of birth years between 1856 and 1862, although several different documents seem to agree that his birth month was March. One document (a certificate for his second marriage) lists his birth location as "Murick," which might really be Minsk. Both Minsk and Bobryck are now (2013) in Belarus.

Morris Slobodien is believed to have married (--?--) Trifon, possibly the, daughter of Aaron Trifon and Bassoa (--?--), before 1885 in Russia.33

Morris Slobodien immigrated circa 1886 (various documents show inconsistent immigration dates of 1886, 1887, and 1888). A ship manifest has been located for a Moses Slobatkin, born about 1858, who entered US on 22 Dec 1886 on the ship Furnessia after sailing from Glasgow and Moville. This individual is probably Morris Slobodien. If it is, he entered the United States at New York, New York, the United States, on 22 Dec 1886 . He traveled (under a name Ancestry.com transcribed as Moses Slobatkin for the US entry passenger list) on board the SS Furnessia, which was operated by the Anchor line. They had sailed from Glasgow, Scotland. The Furnessia passenger list indicates: (1) he traveled as a steerage passenger; (2) he planned to settle permanently in the United States; and (3) he had six pieces of luggage among them (this may have referred to something like “checked” luggage that traveled in the ship’s hold). He seems to be listed as a laborer on the US entry passenger list. He arrived before the US federal government began to control immigration (and opened Ellis Island to facilitate this). Fewer items of information were recorded about each person entering the US under this older system of state (or possibly city) immigration control.

He had left Hamburg, Germany for Scotland (traveling under a surname Ancestry.com transcribed as Slabotkin) aboard a ship called Prague on 4 December 1886, going to Leith, on the east coast of Scotland. Prague apparently did not have cabin classes (and may not have had cabins at all; it may have been more like a ferry). He probably crossed Scotland by train, but this is not certain. The passenger list (written in German) for the trip outbound from Germany listed his previous residence as “Minsk, Russland” and his occupation of as “Kaufmann” (which usually means seller or salesman –- among other related meanings). One wonders if some of those six pieces of luggage could have been merchandise, or merchandise samples. Several of the people on the Prague passenger list indicated they were immigrating to the US from Minsk Russia.35,38

Morris Slobodien was naturalized in 1887 at New York, New York, (or possibly the date was circa 1893, which is more consistent with the "wait time" period following his arrival in the US -- the 1887 date could have been for the "first papers").33

In 1889 Morris Slobodien lived at 71 Smith Street, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.28

Morris Slobodien married Sophia Triffon, daughter of Aaron Trifon and Bassoa (--?--), on 15 March 1889 at Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey, (family folklore is that she was a sister of Morris Slobodien's first wife, but no documentary evidence of this has yet been uncovered).2,28

Between c1890 and c1917 Morris Slobodien's occupation was listed as a blacksmith (and also the horseshoeing business for at least part of this time). Business locations listed for him in Perth Amboy during this period inlcude 49 New Brunswick Avenue (c1907), 179 New Brunswick Avenue (c1910), and 229 New Brunswick Avenue (c1912-c1917); the Perth Amboy house numbering system seems to have been changed in the 1905-1915 time period; the latter two addresses probably represent the same actual location within at Perth Amboy, New Jersey.

Morris Slobodien may have lived in 1891 in South Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey. However, another (secondary) source lists his address as 79 Smith Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey around that year.39,40

Morris Slobodien appeared on the New Jersey state census of 1895 at 2nd Ward, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.25

Morris Slobodien is listed among the "pioneering members of Beth Mordecai" congregation (Temple Berh Mordecai) circa 1897 at Hobart Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.41

Between c1899 and c1900 Morris Slobodien lived at 53 New Brunswick Ave, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.

Morris Slobodien and Sophia Triffon appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey at 53 New Brunswick Ave, enumerated June 1900. Morris was called Harry in this census. The residence was listed as a home (not a farm) and was owned with a mortgage. The official date of that census was 01 June 1900. This census is unique in that month and year of birth were requested for each individual, in additon to age at the official census date. Their children Michael Slobodien, Bessie Slobodien and Benjamin Franklin Slobodien were listed as living with them, as well as Sarah Slobodien, Morris's daughter from his first marriage. Everyone in the household age 10 and over was listed as being able to read, write, and speak English. The two oldest children in the household were listed as having attended school 10 months the previous year. Sophia Triffon was listed as the mother of five children, with four of them living as of the date of the census. This census information for the number of years the principals had been married and the number of living childen for Sophia at the time of the census is inconsistent the family "lore" that (1) Sophia is the second wife of Morris and (2) Sarah's mother was the first wife. The number of years married listed for both principals might be based on the year of Morris's first marriage.37 Morris Slobodien was listed as a blacksmith in the 1900 census.37

Morris Slobodien is listed as a "pioneer member" of the Shaarey Tefiloh Congregation (synagogue) circa 1903.42

Between c1905 and c1907 Morris Slobodien lived at 49 New Brunswick Avenue, Perth Amboy, New Jersey. The Perth Amboy house numbering system seems to have changed some time between 1905 and 1910, thus the change from 53 New Brunswick Avenue to 49 New Brunswick Avenue might not represent an actual change in location. However, in this case, it appears that it was a change. The family seems to have moved from over the blacksmith shop to over a saloon.

Morris Slobodien appeared on the New Jersey state census of 1905 at Perth Amboy, 3rd Ward, Middlesex County, New Jersey.22 He was listed as a blacksmith in the 1905 state census in 1905.22

Morris Slobodien appeared on the census of 1910 at 332 Oak Street, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.24 He was listed as a blacksmith in the 1910 census and in the 1910 Perth Amboy city directory. The city directory included the addtional information that his business address was at 179 New Brunswick Avenue, Perth Amboy, New Jersey. This is probably the same building that had earlier been listed as 53 New Brunswick Avenue (many -- perhaps all -- Perth Amboy street numbers were changed circa 1908.24

Between c1910 and c1914 Morris Slobodien lived at 332 Oak Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.

Morris Slobodien served as president of the United Chesed Shelemis of Perth Amboy. During the period between 1912 and 1920, this organization "pledged donations toward the purchase of a motorized hearse" to be used by the organization at all Jewish funerals.43

Between 1912 and 1916 Morris Slobodien's occupation was listed as listed as a blacksmith at 229 New Brunswick Avenue, Perth Amboy, New Jersey, in Perth Amboy city directories. This is probably the same building that had earlier been listed as 179 New Brunswick Avenue (many -- perhaps all -- Perth Amboy street numbers were changed circa 1908).

Between c1915 and c1917 Morris Slobodien lived at 336 Maple Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.

Morris Slobodien appeared on the New Jersey state census of 1915 at 336 Maple Street, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.23 He was listed as a blacksmith in the 1915 New Jersey state census.23

Between c1916 and c1922 Morris Slobodien lived at Cutter Road, Woodbridge, New Jersey, (the street name is sometimes called Cutter's Road). The streets and roads in this area have been shifted somewhat since the 1916-1922 era. A portion of what used to be called Cutter Road is now known as Florida Grove Road. He is also listed as residing at the 336 Maple Street address in the 1916 city directory (information for the 1916 city directory may have been collected during the last half of 1915).

Between 1916 and 1922 Morris Slobodien's occupation was listed as proprieter of Spa Spring House (a hotel) on Cutters Road, Woodbridge, New Jersey. The Spa Spring House appears to have been located on a property at the southeast corner of the intersection of Cutter (or Cutter's) Road and Amboy Avenue, in Woodbridge (or Woodbridge Township), a few miles north of Perth Amboy. This location appears to be what is now (2013) the northeast corner of the intersection of Amboy Avenue and Cutter's Dock Road. In the 1916 Perth Amboy city directory, "Slobidien & Rotenbursky" are listed as owners. Only Morris Slobodien is listed as the owner of this establishment in the next several city directories during this time period. The Spa Spring House appears to have had a bar. Laws prohibiting the sale of alcoholic beverages (implemented in 1920) may have decreased the value of this business (just as -- one might speculate -- the increasing use of automobiles may have decreased the value of his earlier blacksmith/horseshoeing business). Morris Slobodien is listed as both a blacksmith and as an owner of this hotel in the 1916 city directory.

Morris Slobodien and Sophia Triffon appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Woodbridge, Middlesex County, New Jersey at Cutters Road, enumerated 2 January 1920. The residence was listed as owned with no mortgage. The official date of that census was 01 January 1920. Their children Bessie Slobodien and Michael Slobodien were listed as living with them. All members of the household were listed as being able to read and write.36 Morris Slobodien was listed as a hotel keeper (owner, working for his own account) in the 1920 census.36

Between c1923 and c1925 Morris Slobodien lived at 143 Smith Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey. This address appears to be an apartment above the Slobodien Shoe Store, which was owned during this time by Morris's brother Joseph and/or his nephews Jacob and Leo (Albert Leon). Perth Amboy city directories published for the years between 1923 and 1929 do not list an occupation for him.

Between c1926 and c1935 Morris Slobodien lived at 107 Market Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.

Between c1930 and c1935 Morris Slobodien's occupation was generally listed as a "gateman" (bridge tender) at the Woodbridge Creek Bridge at Middlesex County, New Jersey.

Morris Slobodien and Sophia Triffon appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of at Perth Amboy, at Middlesex County, New Jersey at 107 Market Street, enumerated 2 April 1930, Their ages were listed as 72 and 67, respectively, both born in Russia (both with first language Yiddish), both married, ages at first marriage for both was 26, both did not attend school the previous year, and neither could read or write English, although both could speak English. The census schedule indicates Morris became an naturalized citizen in 1887 and Sophia became a naturalized citizen in 1889. The home was listed as rented for $100 per month (with rent apparently paid by son Benjamin), and not on a farm. A radio was listed as being present in the home. The official date of that census was 02 April 1930. Their children Michael Slobodien, Benjamin Franklin Slobodien and Bessie Slobodien were listed as living with them, Morris was listed as employed as a bridge tender for Middlesex County (as a worker). No occupation was listed for Sophia. Morris’s nephew, Jacob Slobodien, and several members of his family lived next door (Household 4 on the same census schedule page). The home was one unit of a two-family home. Since Jacob was listed as a home owner, and Morris’s household was listed a renting, Jacob was probably his Morris’s family’s landlord.44 Morris Slobodien was listed as a bridge tender in Middlesex County (and Middlesex County government may have been his actual employer) at the time of the 1930 census.26

Between c1940 and c1942 Morris Slobodien lived at 233 High Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.

Morris Slobodien and Sophia Triffon appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of at Perth Amboy, at Middlesex County, New Jersey at 233 High Street, enumerated 15 April 1940. The home was listed as owned, valued at $12,000, and not on a farm. The official date of that census was 01 April 1940. Their children Michael Slobodien, Benjamin Franklin Slobodien and Bessie Slobodien were listed as living with them, along with Julia Stephens, listed as a maid, and possbily Edward P Brinkman, who seems to be included in same dwelling as the Slobodiens, but is listed as head of his own household (but a separate household number is not assigned for him in the census listing). All household members were listed having lived in the same place on 1 Apr 1935, with the exception of Edward P Brinkman, who was listed as living in the same house on 1 Apr 1935. Morris Slobodien and Sophia Triffon were listed as ages 82 and 77, respectively, both married, not attending school in March 1940, having completed 8 years of schooling, having been born in Russia, and both naturalized US citizens. Morris was listed as not working or seeking work the week of 24-30 March, with the reason for not working listed as "other". His occupation was listed as a blacksmith, private company on his own account (this probably refers to his previous occupation). He is listed as not having worked in 1939, with no wage income reported, but he did have other income (other than wages or salary). Sophia seems to be listed as doing housework, not working for wages, and not seeking work the week of 24-30 March. No occupation was listed for her. She is listed as not having worked in 1939, with no wage income reported and she had other income (other than wages or salary).45

Morris Slobodien died on 13 September 1944 at 233 High Street, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey, at age 86. He died at his home.33,46 He was buried at Mount Lebanon Cemetery, Woodbridge, New Jersey. His obituary indicates he worked as a blacksmith up until his retirement 16 years prior to his death, which would have been 1928, when he was 70 (this omits his time as owner of the Spa and his job as a bridge tender). Obituary indicates he was survived by his wife, four children, two grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.46

An informal essay-type end note describes the use of Sandborn Maps as a source of 1information about Perth Amboy, New Jersey, in the c1900-c1920 era. Morris Slobodien's places of business and residences during this time were used in the essay to illustrate the types of information that can be gleaned from these maps.47

An essay-type endnote provides additional background information about certain European locations associated with this individual.48

His immigration date is from this document. As of Jan 2017, Carl Fields has been unable to locate him on an ship manifest landing in the United States on or near this date. Several variations of "Philip" and "Levine" were considered (since the family name might have been revised after entering the United States). Also, searches were performed based on the family structure (although it is not know for certain that the family members arrived on the same ship). Several other potential immigration years can be inferred from information entered on other documents, such as the forms used for some censuses. The 1891 date is before the US federal govenment began keeping these records (in 1892, prior to that, they were state or city records). Also, he was naturalized before the federal government took over control of naturalization (in 1906, prior to that, it is doubtful that the immigration date would have been confirmed from records as part of the naturalization process).

Sophia Triffon1

F, b. 15 January 1862, d. 6 June 1972
FatherAaron Trifon
MotherBassoa (--?--)
ChartsDescendants of Labo Slobodien
Handwritten entries of her surname in two source documents have been transcribed as Freefan and as Frefon.2,3,4,5,6,7 Sophia Triffon was born on 15 January 1862 in Russia (several other birth years and birth month-year combinations appear in other source documents; these include Feb 1863, Dec 1865, and Dec 1869 -- her 1889 marriage return lists 1869 in "Murick" Russia, which may be Minsk Russia, now in Belarus).8

Sophia Triffon immigrated in 1889 to the United States.9,10,11,6,7

Sophia Triffon married Morris Slobodien, son of Solomon Slobodien and Meenyx Fayweshovitz, on 15 March 1889 at Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey, (family folklore is that she was a sister of Morris Slobodien's first wife, but no documentary evidence of this has yet been uncovered).2,12

Sophia Triffon lived in 1891 at South Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.13

Sophia Triffon was naturalized in 1893 (probably as the result of the naturalization of her husband, in accordance with laws in effect at that time, i.e., 1890s).6

Sophia Triffon appeared on the New Jersey state census of 1895 at 2nd Ward, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.14

Sophia Triffon and Morris Slobodien appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey at 53 New Brunswick Ave, enumerated June 1900. The number of years married listed for both principals might be based on the year of Morris's first marriage.7

Sophia Triffon appeared on the New Jersey state census of 1905 at 49 New Brunswick Avenue (3rd Ward), Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.9

Sophia Triffon appeared on the census of 1910 at 332 Oak Street, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.15

Sophia Triffon appeared on the New Jersey state census of 1915 at 336 Maple Street (3rd Ward), Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.10

Sophia Triffon and Morris Slobodien appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Woodbridge, Middlesex County, New Jersey at Cutters Road, enumerated 2 January 1920. The residence was listed as owned with no mortgage. The official date of that census was 01 January 1920. Their children Bessie Slobodien and Michael Slobodien were listed as living with them. All members of the household were listed as being able to read and write.6

Between 1927 and 1930 Sophia Triffon lived at 107 Market Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.

Sophia Triffon appeared on the census of 1930 at 107 Market Steet (Ward 2), Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.11

Sophia Triffon and Morris Slobodien appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of at Perth Amboy, at Middlesex County, New Jersey at 107 Market Street, enumerated 2 April 1930, Their ages were listed as 72 and 67, respectively, both born in Russia (both with first language Yiddish), both married, ages at first marriage for both was 26, both did not attend school the previous year, and neither could read or write English, although both could speak English. Since Jacob was listed as a home owner, and Morris’s household was listed a renting, Jacob was probably his Morris’s family’s landlord.16

Between 1940 and 1949 Sophia Triffon lived at 233 High Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.

Sophia Triffon and Morris Slobodien appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of at Perth Amboy, at Middlesex County, New Jersey at 233 High Street, enumerated 15 April 1940. She is listed as not having worked in 1939, with no wage income reported and she had other income (other than wages or salary).17

Sophia Triffon died on 6 June 1972 at Perth Amboy Hospital, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey, at age 110 (a death notice or obituary appeared in the newspaper along with a second notice giving a revised location for her funeral -- one of these gave her date of death as 5 June 1972).5,18,19 She was buried at Mt Lebanon Cemetery. At the time of her death, she resided at 233 High Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey. She was said to be survived by two children, two grandchildren, and one great-grandchild (the grandchildren and great-grandchild were probably descended from her late stepdaughter, Sophia Slobodien Bardin (who, according to family folklore, may also have been a neice).19

Sophia Triffon's Social Security Number was 151-42-0218, issued in New Jersey in 1966 (last residence was Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey).18

Notes and Observations: Certain additional information is available about the Triffon (or Trifon) family. Two brothers, Barry and Howard Aronoff have done research on their ancestors, one of whom was apparently a sibling of this Sophia Triffon Slobodien. They have documented their research on a fascinating (and quite informative) web site: (https://sites.google.com/site/aronoffsussmangenealogy : accessed -- most recently as this is written -- 12 October 2013). Eventually, that web site will probably be used as a source document for adding more information about the Triffon's to this web sire). For example, the Aronoff's seem to have located the manifest where Sophia entered the US (in 1882, several years earlier than reported on several documents cited in the database summarized on this web site). Also, they mention they remember (as young boys) visiting this Sophia (who was their grandmother's aunt) in Perth Amboy and they mention at least one of their relatives who listed "M Slobodien" (the Aronoff relative's Aunt Sophia's husband) as his "US contact" when entering the US on 27 Dec 1905.

Sarah Slobodien lived on 12 September 1918 at 336 Maple Street, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.9

Sarah Slobodien and Charles I Bardin appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey at 143 Smith Street (Ward 3), enumerated 8 January 1920. The home was listed as rented and appears to be an apartment over the Slobodien shoe store. The official date of that census was 01 January 1920. Their children Gladys R Bardin and Bernice Bardin were listed as living with them. Benjamin Franklin Slobodien, Sarah's brother (actually half-brother), was also listed as part of this household (Household 195). However, Benjamin is also listed as the head of a household, so it is unclear if Benjamin was part of the Bardin household or if he lived in a separate apartment above the shoe store. It appears that at this time Benjamin, a physician, maintained an office over the shoe store. His office suite may have included living quarters. Charles and Benjamin were explicitly listed as being able to read and write, but no entry was recorded in these columns for Sarah, Gladys, and Beatrice. Beatrice was listed as attending school after September 1, 1919 (but Gladys was not so listed).1

Between c1926 and c1930 Sarah Slobodien lived at 106 Madison Avenue, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.

Sarah Slobodien appeared on the census of 1930 at 106 Madison Avenue, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.10 Her occupation was was listed as "None" in the 1930 census (but, she was listed as a census enumerator for the district she lived in.)10

Sarah Slobodien lived in 1940 at 123 Lewis Street, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.11

Between c1942 and c1949 Sarah Slobodien lived at 148 Kearney Avenue, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.

Between c1945 and c1949 Sarah Slobodien's occupation was listed as owner/operator of a gift shop (either called The Fashion Bar, or within a larger shop that was called The Fashion Bar) at 280 Hobart, Perth Amboy, New Jersey. The address of her business in the 1945 Perth Amboy city directory contained the notation "R419". It is unclear what this meant (perhaps it identified a suite within a multi-tennent building at the 280 Hobart Street address).12,13,14

Sarah Slobodien died on 4 June 1969 at age 84.7 She was buried at Congregation Shari Tephalo/Congregation Beth Mordecai Cemeteries, Florida Grove Road, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.7

Between c1910 and c1915 Michael Slobodien lived at 332 Oak Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey. In 1910 and 1915 Michael Slobodien's occupation was listed as a collector.

Between 1912 and 1949 Michael Slobodien's occupation was most often listed as a clerk, presumably at Perth Amboy, New Jersey, during much of this time. Many of these "clerk" positions are believed to be employment as a sales clerk and/or manager in liquor stores (although he was also listed as a clerk in the 1923-1929 city directories, when prohibition was in effect). The city directories and censuses generally do not identify his specific employer for these clerical positions. Several editions of the Perth Amboy city directory (including the 1921 and 1922 editions, and all three editions published during the 1930s) do not list any occupation for Michael Slobodien. He was explicitly listed as the manager of a liquor store on his 1917 World War I draft card.

Michael Slobodien appeared on the census of 1915 at 336 Maple Street (3rd Ward), Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.22

Between c1915 and c1918 Michael Slobodien was listed as living at 336 Maple Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey, in Perth Amboy city directories (he was also listed as living at the Spa Spring House in Woodbridge Township, as indicated below). He was listed as a clerk and as a bartender in the 1916 city directory. The bartender listing suggests the Spa Spring house may have had a bar, which, in turn, suggests their business might have been adversely affected by the enactment of prohibition. He was listed as the manager of a liquor store in the 1917 city directory.12

Between c1916 and c1922 Michael Slobodien lived at Spa Spring House, Cutter's Road, Woodbridge, New Jersey. This period includes the time when Michael was in the military duing World War I. Presumably, during the time he was in military service, the Spa Spring House residence represented his permanent home address, not his actual place of residence, which was probably an army post. He was listed twice in the 1916, 1917, and 1918 city directories for Perth Amboy (which also covered certain nearby communities, including Woodbridge Township), living at both the 336 Maple Street, Perth Amboy address and at the Spa Spring House, Woodbridge Township (the Woodbridge Township establishment was referred to as Cutter House in the 1917 city directory).

Michael Slobodien served in the US Army during WW I, circa 1918.25,36

Michael Slobodien appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Woodbridge, Middlesex County, New Jersey in the household of his parents, Morris Slobodien and Sophia Triffon, at Cutters Road.32 Michael Slobodien was listed as a census enumerator, employed by the US government, in the 1920 census.32

Between c1923 and c1925 Michael Slobodien lived at 143 Smith Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.

Between c1926 and c1935 Michael Slobodien lived at 107 Market Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.

Michael Slobodien appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey in the household of his parents, Morris Slobodien and Sophia Triffon, at 107 Market Street. He was listed as age 39, born in New Jersey, single, not attending school, and could read and write English. No occupation was listed for him. He had been unemployed for two months and was a veteran of the World War (later known as World War I).37

Michael Slobodien appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey in the household of his parents, Morris Slobodien and Sophia Triffon, at 233 High Street. The official date of that census was 01 April 1940. He was listed as: age 49, single, did not attend school during March 1940, had completed eight years of schooling, born in New Jersey, lived in the same place on 1 Apr 1935, was unemployed, worked zero hours the week of March 24-30 1940, 104 weeks of unemployment immediately prior to 1 Apr 1940; occupation was listed as clerk in a private office. In 1939 he worked zero weeks, had no wage earnings, and did not have income in excess of $50 from sources other than wages or salary.38

Between c1940 and c1949 Michael Slobodien lived at 233 High Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.

Michael Slobodien's 1942 World War II draft registration record indicates his employer was his brother, Benjamin Franklin Slobodien. The employer address was given as 233 High Street, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey, which was the home address for both of them at that time. Since Michael Slobodien was often employed as a store clerk/manager (most often in liquor stoes), this suggests the possibility Benjamin Franklin Slobodien may have owned (or been an investor in) a store at that time (possibly a liquor store), which Michael managed.39

Michael Slobodien died on 31 March 1953 at Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey, at age 62.27,40

Michael Slobodien was described as being of medium height and medium build, with light brown eyes and dark brown hair in 1917 (on a World War I draft registration record.) His Social Security Number was 142-18-4286.41

From c1914 until after 1949 Benjamin Franklin Slobodien's occupation was a physician at Perth Amboy, New Jersey. His business address (office) was generally the same as his home address. From c1915 until c1919, the street address of his office was listed as 336 Maple Street (although he served as a physician in the United States army during World War I, which took place during a portion of this time interval). From c1920 until c1925 the street address of his office was 143 Smith Street (probably above the Slobodien Shoe Store). From c1926 until c1935 the street address of his office was 107 Market Street. From c1940 until at least 1949 the street address of his office was 233 High Street.

Known postings were at Embarkaton Hospital #2, Secaucus New Jersey and Disembarkation Hospital #3, New York City (his obiturary, over 50 years later, indicated he had been in charge of the hospital at Secaucus).5,12

Benjamin Franklin Slobodien appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey, possibly in the household of Charles I Bardin and Sarah Slobodien, at 143 Smith Street (Ward 3). The Bardin residence was apparently an apartment over the Joseph Slobodien shoe store Joseph was an uncle to both Benjamin and Sarah. Benjamin is also listed as the head of a household in this census, so it is unclear if Benjamin was part of the Bardin household or if he lived in a separate apartment above the shoe store. It appears that at this time Benjamin, a physician, maintained an office over the shoe store. His office suite may have included living quarters.13 Benjamin Franklin Slobodien was listed as a doctor, practicing medicine, in the 1920 census.14

In 1920 he held membership in the following organizations: Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, Prudence Loddge # 204; Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, Caldwell Consistory; Royal Arch Masons, Amboy Chapter, No. 41; Benevolent and Protective Oder of Elks, Lodge # 784; Clinical Society of the Elizabeth General Hospital; Middlesex County Medical Society; New Jersey State Medical Society; Perth Amboy Medical Society; Phi Delta Epsilon Fraternity; and the Jewish Synagogue of Shaary Tfilloh (Perth Amboy).

He was listed as age 38, born in New Jersey, single, not attending school, and could read and write English. He was employed and his occupation was listed as physician, medical, working on his own account. He was listed as a veteran of the World War (later known as World War I).15 Benjamin Franklin Slobodien was listed as a physician, medical, in the 1930 census.16

Between c1940 and c1949 Benjamin Franklin Slobodien lived at 233 High Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.

Benjamin Franklin Slobodien appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey in the household of his parents, Morris Slobodien and Sophia Triffon, at 233 High Street. The official date of that census was 01 April 1940. He was listed as: age 48, single, did not attend school during March 1940, had completed five years of college, born in New Jersey, lived in the same place on 1 Apr 1935, was employed, worked 54 hours the week of March 24-30 1940, zero weeks of unemployment immediately prior to 1 Apr 1940; occupation was listed as a medical doctor in private practice on his own account (self employed). In 1939 he stated that he worked zero weeks, had no wage earnings, and had income in excess of $50 from sources other than wages or salary.17

Michael Slobodien's 1942 World War II draft registration record indicates his employer was his brother, Benjamin Franklin Slobodien. The employer address was given as 233 High Street, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey, which was the home address for both of them at that time. Since Michael Slobodien was often employed as a store clerk/manager (most often in liquor stoes), this suggests the possibility Benjamin Franklin Slobodien may have owned (or been an investor in) a store at that time (possibly a liquor store), which Michael managed.18

He had served as a consultant to the Robert Wood Johnson Hospital and to Roosevelt Hospital. He had been a member of the Middlesex County Medical Society since 1935, serving as vice president in 1939, president in 1940, and as a member of the Board of Trustees. He was also a director emeritus and consulting surgeon at Perth Amboy General Hospital, past president of the staff at that hospital, and an honorary surgeon at John F Kennedy Medical Center in Edison. He had practiced medicine for 64 years prior to his retirement in 1976. Finally, he was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons, Rariton Lodge 61 and the Elks NPOE 734 of Perth Amboy.20,12 He may have lived at Virginia late in his life, before the time of his death.6

Family folklore is that, although he never married, he had a number of romances over the years (he was known as a "ladies' man"). There is a second family legend that Benjamin Franklin "Hawkeye" Pierce, a character in the "M.A.S.H" TV series (also a book, film, and play), may have been partially based on B. F. Slobodien (who had been a WWI physician/surgeon; "B. F. Pierce" was a Korean War physician/surgeon).
