Anna Segal was primarily known as Nuna by family members after coming to the United States, but the given name Anna appears to have been used for all formal purposes (census registry, city permits, city directory, etc. -- additional comments on her name are near the end of this narrative). She was born on 17 April 1882 at Berdesnak, Tauritcheskai (Taurida), Russia.6,7

Anna Segal married Nathan Golosoff, son of Nachman Golosoff and Chiah (--?--), circa 1902.8

Anna Segal lived circa 1905 at Alexandrowsk (or Alexandrovsk), Ekaterinoslav Guberina, Russia (an area that is now in Ukraine). This is probably the city now called Zaporizhia.9

Her home was invaded during a pogrom, probably in Zaporizhia, on 4 November 1905 (a corrected "new style" date).

Anna Segal entered the United States at New York, New York, on 3 March 1906 as part of an extended family consisting of Moses Segal, Reisel Golosoff, Harry Segal, Hannah Yowell, Constant Segal, Nathan Golosoff, Anna Segal and Jeannette Golosoff. They traveled on board the SS Chemintz, which was operated by the North German (Nord Deutsch) Lloyd line. They had sailed from Bremen, Germany on 17 February 1906. The Chemnitz passenger list indicates: (1) the group traveled as second class passengers; (2) they entered the US with $713 among them; (3) their final destination in the US was Perth Amboy, New Jersey; and (4) they intended to join a relative, Joseph Slobodien, a brother-in-law of Moses Segal, who lived in Perth Amboy, New Jersey.10

Anna Segal appeared on the census of 1910 at 180? Main Street, Tottenville, Richmond, New York.11

Anna Segal appeared on the New Jersey state census of 1915 at 174 Broad Street (Ward 3), Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.12

In 1918 Anna Segal lived at 340 New Brunswick Avenue, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.13

Nathan Golosoff and Anna Segal and their daughters Anna Segal, Jennette Golosoff, Rose Golosoff, Sadie Golosoff and Freda Golosoff were apparently not recorded in the 1920 US census. They probably lived at either 112 Madison Avenue or 148 Madison Avenue, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey, at the time of the 1920 census. The above two candidate addresses are based on addresses listed for Nathan Golosoff in the 1920 and 1921 Perth Amboy city directories (the addresses of the entire family can probably be inferred from Nathan's address listed in city directories published between 1905 and the mid-1930s).14

Anna Segal joined Hadassah in 1925 (presumably the Perth Amboy chapter). Hadassah is the Women's Zionist Organization of America, an American Jewish volunteer women's organization. In the United States, Hadassah (as of 2013, according to Wikipedia) promotes health education, social action and advocacy, volunteerism, Jewish education and research, and connections with Israel (Zionist activity was probably a larger factor in 1925, before the establishment of the nation of Israel).15

In 1927 Anna Segal lived at 182 Market Street, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.16 Her occupation was listed as "del and mlnry" in the city directory, which evidently means a delicatessen and millinery business (a shop combining the two things), at 460 Amboy Avenue, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.17

In 1929 Anna Segal lived at 384 Washington Street, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.18

Anna Segal appeared on the census of 1930 at 287 Smith Street, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.8

In 1931 Anna Segal lived at 287 Smith Street, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.3 In 1935 Anna Segal lived at 111 Brighton Avenue, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.4

Between c1935 and c1952 Anna Segal lived at 272 Market Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.6,19

Anna Segal apparently completed the initial application to become a US citizen on 30 September 1938, but no record has been found of any additional steps being taken.15

Anna Segal and Nathan Golosoff appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey at 272 Market Street, enumerated 21 April 1940. The home was listed as rented for $40 per month and not on a farm. The official date of that census was 01 April 1940. Their children Jeannette Golosoff, Rose Golosoff, Sadie Golosoff and Freda Golosoff were listed as living with them. All household members were listed having lived in the same house on 1 Apr 1935. Nathan Golosoff and Anna Segal were listed as ages 61 and 57, respectively, both married, not attending school in March 1940, having completed 2 years of schooling, having been born in Russia, and having completed first papers for citizenship. Nathan Golosoff and Anna Segal were listed as not working or seeking work, both with zero hours of work the week of 24-30 March, zero weeks of unemployment immediately prior to 1 April 1940, unable to work and doing housework, respectively, no occupation was listed for them and no income was reported for them. The amount listed for rental of the home is puzzling because Jeannette Golosoff, living in the home, had apparently purchased the house in 1939. Perhaps the others (or, at least, her employed sisters) paid rent to Jeannette. The census notation that they lived in the "same house" in 1935 suggests they might have been renting the home prior to Janette purchasing it.20

Anna Segal probably visited her daughter, Jeannette Golosoff, and her daughter's family, who lived at 71 Garfield Avenue, Detroit, Michigan, circa late 1944/early 1945 and also circa April 1947.1

She lived in Sacramento, California, for at least a few months circa 1955. Her youngest daughter, Freda Golosoff lived in Sacramento at that time. Carl Fields remembers she had a small apartment with a Murphy bed (a fascinating thing to a 10-year-old boy).1

Anna Segal lived between c1956 and 1965 at 120 Woodnor Ct, New Brunswick, New Jersey.21,7

Anna Segal died on 23 December 1965 at Parker Nursing Home, New Brunswick, Middlesex County, New Jersey, at age 83.7,22 She was buried on 24 December 1965 at Hebrew Progressive Cemetery, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey. Her permanent address at the time of her death was listed as 120 Woodnor Court, New Brunswick NJ. She had lived in New Brunswick for 13 years. She was survived by three daughters, six grandchildren, and a brother (Dr Isadore Siegel, of Perth Amboy).7,22 Her death certificate stated that during her life her primary occupation was a milliner in the clothing industry.7

She was apparently known by the given name Anna (or sometimes Annie) for formal (public) purposes, but was generally known as Nuna within the family. Her given name prior to immigration was apparently Necham. Her maiden surname is listed as Segal here for consistency, although she married prior to immigration, and thus would have seldom used the Americanized maiden name.23

However, on the few occasions when her maiden surname has been encountered (after immigration), it is given as Segal, the "americanized" surname (and spelling) two of her brothers adopted after coming to the US. Several versions exist for Latin-alphabet spellings of the version of her maiden family name as it was used in Russia/Ukraine (that name appears infrequently after the family moved to the US, and then only in conjunction with other family members). Ziegelneitsky may be the most common Latin-alphabet form for that original maiden surname (this is probably a phonetic transliteration; the name may have seldom been written in the Latin alphabet prior to the family's move to the US). Her name is listed as Necham Golossoff on the ship manifest when she entered the US in March 1906. Her first name was listed as Annie on a few documents.

Some variations of the married surname Golosoff have appeared, most notably Golossoff in the immigration ship manifest (note the double-s in the surname in this spelling.)

Personal recollections about Anna Segal are described in an end note.24

It seemed to have living quarters behind the "store" area, with a separate street entrance north of the main (storefront) entrance. This separate entrance did not seem to have a street number associated with it in 2006, but it might have been the "462 Amboy Avenue" address listed for Rose Golosoff in college documents around this time. Francis Pavlovsky lived at 441 Amboy Avenue around this time (he was then around age 12 or 13). He has stated that he recalled seeing the Golosoff daughters going past his house to their residence near this family business. The 384 Washiington address listed for Anna around this time was also in this area (Washington Avenue intersects Amboy Avenue). Carl Fields once thought the Washington Avenue address might be for an alternative entrance to the rear portion of this same building (460 Amboy Avenue may be on a corner). However, the best maps available to Carl as of August 2013 suggest this "alternative entrance" theory is not viable.

Aaron Francis Johnson was born on 1 September 1837 in Alabama -- the death certificate of one of his sons gives the location of birth as Salem, Decalib (DeKalb) County, Alabama.6,7,8,9 Several sources indicate he was born in a different year: 1839.10,11,5

Aaron Francis Johnson married Alabeth Wood, daughter of Henry William Wood and Sarah Freeman, circa 1859 in Missouri.12,10,13,14,15

Aaron Francis Johnson and Alabeth Wood appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Sherrill Township, Texas County, Missouri at Licking (Post Office), enumerated 10 July 1860. The official date of that census was 01 June 1860. Their son, Moses F. Johnson, was listed as living with them. as well as Charles Stinnett (about age 9), whose role in the household (and whose relationship, if any, to the others) is unknown as this is written in 2009. The household was listed as having real estate worth $600 and personal property worth $375. Charles Stinnett was listed as attending school within the last year (the other child in the household, Moses, was an infant). The census information indicates both adults in the household could read and write.3 His occupation was listed as farmer in the 1860 census.3

Aaron Francis Johnson was granted 80 acres of land on 1 August 1860 in Texas County, Missouri. The specific location was in Section 9, of Township 33-N, Range 9-W. The patent was for the West 1/2 of the Southwest Quarter of Section 9.16

He lived at home (probably Texas County, Missouri) during the early part of the Civil War until all of his personal property was "taken from him" (probably requisitioned or confiscated by one side or the other of the two opposing armies). Then he went to Rolla, Missouri, and worked with the "government train" until the spring when peace was made (probably Spring 1865 -- "train" probably refers to a railroad, but it could refer to some kind of supply train employing horse- or mule-drawn wagons). He then moved to the North Fork in Douglas County and lived there the remainder of his life.13,14

Aaron Francis Johnson and Alabeth Wood appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Wood Richland Township, Texas County, Missouri at Houston (Post Office), enumerated July 1870. The real estate associated with the household was listed as having a value of $400 and personal effects were listed as having a value of $600. The official date of that census was 01 June 1870. Their children Moses F. Johnson, Henry Wood Johnson, Isaac Monroe Johnson and Lovy Jane Johnson were listed as living with them.2 Aaron Francis Johnson was listed as a farmer in the 1870 census. The 1870 census was taken during an approximately two-year period when several townships "normally" at the eastern end of Douglas County had been transferred to Texas County. These "transferred" townships included this Wood Richland area where this family lived. The apparent move from Douglas County (circa 1868) to Texas County (in 1870) and then back to Douglas County (in later years) is an artifact of the changes in county boundaries. The family did not really move.2

Aaron Francis Johnson was granted 120 acres of land on 30 October 1874 in Douglas County, Missouri, under the Homestead Act of May 20, 1862 (Homestead Certificate 1736) from the Land Office at Springfield Missouri. The patent was for 80 acres in Section 32 of Township 27-N of Range 11-W. The specific portions of Section 27 were: the NW 1/4 of the NE quadrant and the SE 1/4 of the NW quadrant. He had actually settled on (or began occupying and working) the land in early 1868.

The final steps in the administrative process to obtain this patent (i.e., legal title to the land) apparently began in August 1874. On August 3, two men William Henry Wood and John Zachary Taylor Nelson made an affidavit stating: (1) they had known Aaron Francis Johnson for eight years; (2) he was the head of a family consisting of a wife and six children; (3) he had lived on the tract of land since April 20, 1868; (4) he had built a hewed log house measuring 18 ft by 18 ft; (5) he had cultivated about 10 acres; (6) he has also built a log smoke house measuring 14 ft by 14 ft, a log stable 10 ft by 20 ft, and a log corn crib 10 ft by 20 ft; and (7) he had planted 25 fruit trees. The house was said to have a plank floor, a board roof, two doors, one window, and a stone chimney and was said to be quite a comfortable house to live in. The integrity of the two men making these statements was apparently confirmed by the Registrar of the Springfield Land Office. The "six children" mentioned on this 1874 affidavit is consistent with six known children born between 1859 and 1873.

Aaron Francis Johnson submitted a separate "Final Affidavit" certifying that he was the head of a family, a citizen of the United States, had settled on the land in question, and had not previously had benefit of the 1862 Homestead Law. Aaron Francis's affidavit was apparently made in person at the Land Office in Springfield (and involved the payment of a $2 fee). The affidavit has a notation giving an address (P. O. Hickory Springs, Texas County, Missouri), which was apparently Aaron Francis Johnson's mailing address at that time. Post offices a considerable distance from one another may have been common, so it may not have been unusual for someone living in Douglas County to receive their mail in the adjacent county. (William C. Fields had been granted a homestead land grant patent in Eastern Douglas County a few weeks earlier. He also listed is mailing address as Hickory Spring, but he thought it was in Wright County.)

Aaron Francis Johnson stated that he had homesteaded this land for the "use and benefit" of adjacent farm land he already owned at the time he began cultivating the claimed land (20 Feb 1868, the date of the original application, which was number 1230). The adjacent farm occupied the NE quarter of the NE quadrant and the SW quarter of the NE quadrant of Section 32 (thus the two quarter quadrants granted under the Homestead Act would give him the entire NE quadrant of Section 32). He further stated that "some time" in April 1868 he moved his residence from land on the original farm to the NW quarter of the NE quadrant "for the reason that the house site suited me better." John Zachary Taylor Nelson, his nephew, and William Henry Wood signed a affidavit confirming the improvements he had made on the homesteaded land.17

Aaron Francis Johnson became postmaster for Florilla, Douglas County, Missouri, on 28 October 1885, succeeding William Charles Fields.18,19

Aaron Francis Johnson, recorded as A. F. Johnson, was listed as owning taxable personal property in Cliinton Township of Douglas County Missouri in 1885. The taxable property consisted of: Livestock: 3 horses valued at $135, no asses and jennies, 1 mule valued at $30, 12 neat cattle valued at $100, no sheep, and 20 hogs valued at $20; Money, notes, bonds, and other credits: $1; and all other personal property $1502; giving a total value of $1787 for all taxable personal property (since the listed sum is $1 less than the actual sum, the $1 value for “Money, etc.” may actually be a stray mark on the page). The taxes were for property held on 1 June 1885, but the assessments were apparently made in 1886 (and taxes were apparently due in 1886). The county courthouse burned on 26 April 1886. Since these records survive, they were apparently compiled (or completed) after that date. The term “neat cattle” seems to refer to what nowadays (as this is written in 2015) are just be called “cattle”. However, Carl Fields saw a few references on the internet which suggest the term might have sometimes (or in some portions of the US) referred more specifically either to oxen (cattle used as draft animals) or to dairy cattle.20

Aaron Francis Johnson lived in 1886 at Florilla, Douglas County, Missouri.19

Aaron Francis Johnson was succeeded as postmaster at Florilla, Missouri, by James H. Bittick on 1 November 1889.18

Aaron Francis Johnson was elected to a four-year term as presiding judge of Douglas County, Missouri, 4 November 1890.21,22 He was presiding judge at Douglas County, Missouri, between 1890 and 1894.23

A statewide database of Missouri legal case files indicates Aaron Francis Johnson (along with others) was sued by the estate of J. S. Alsup, J. H. Martin, Administrator, during 1894 in the Douglas County, Missouri, Circuit Court. The subject of the action was listed only as "Account". All of the defendents were Douglas County officials (judges and the County Treasurer). (William C Fields, the father-in-law of Aaron Francis Johnson's, daughter, Sarah Johnson, also had a run-in with members of the Alsup family in the 1870-1880 era.)24

Aaron Francis Johnson appeared on the census of 1900 at Clinton Township, Douglas County, Missouri.25 He was listed as a farmer in the 1900 census.25

Aaron Francis Johnson died on 1 January 1905 at Douglas County, Missouri, at age 67.13,14 He was buried at Mt. Ararat Cemetery, McKinley Township, Douglas County, Missouri.6,5

The town of Florilla (which may have been on property owned by Aaron Francis Johnson) is said to have been named after one of the three daughters of "old Judge Johnson". Three daughters are known (Lovy Jane, Sarah Clementine, and Easter Elizabeth), but (as of June 2014) no record has been uncovered associating the name Florilla with any of the three. It is possible there way a fourth daughter who died young and did not appear in any censuses (or other records that have as yet been uncovered). A grave marker for one child who died young is known, but the marker indicates this was an infant son, not a daughter. The first known use of the name Florilla is when a post office was established there in 1879. Thus this speculative daughter would have been born before that year.26

Notes and Observations (Burials in Fairview Cemetery):

The Douglas County cemetery book contains some interesting material about Fairview Cemetery in Clinton Township in Dpuglas County Missouri. It apparently once served the town of Ann, Missouri, which no longer seems to exist. Interestingly, the cemetery has perhaps 4 or 5 burials as recently as 1995 and later, including one (a Fleetwood) as recently at 2019.
Several Johnsons, Elliott’s, and Stillwell’s are buried there.
William Fields’s second wife (Eva Amanda Elliott Fields) is buried in Row 7. Her grave marker mentions that she was the wife of W. C. Fields (she was his wife #2). In addition, the cemetery book suggests a marker (with no information other than a name) might exist for him adjacent to Eva Amanda (and probably a space exists there too). The location of Eva Amanda’s first husband, Robert Boring, is unknown.

W C (William Charles) is buried at Mount Ararat, adjacent to Keziah Jarman Fields -- his wife # 1.

His wife #4 was Cynthia Elliott Stillwell (Fields). She is also buried in Row *7 (apparently some distance from Eva Amanda). She is buried adjacent to her first husband. In the transcription, or “reading,” in the book her first name is spelled starting with an “S” (Synthia). However, the photo on Find-a-Grave seems to show it is spelled with a “C” (Cynthia) on her grave marker. Amanda and Cynthia were sisters.
CCF does not know where WC’s wife #3 (Mary Williams) was buried. It is not known if Williams was her maiden surname or if it is a previous husband’s surname.

In addition, several Johnsons are buried in this cemetery, including three infant children: one of Henry Wood and Ruth Ellen Rankin Johnson (listed in the cemetery book as “H. W. & E. R.”), one of (probably) Aaron Francis and Alabeth Wood Johnson (listed as “A. F. & E.” – there is some indirect evidence that Alabeth was her middle name and her first name was “Elnora”), and one of “M. F. & L.” (these parents are uncertain, but this might be evidence of an as-yet-undiscovered first marriage of Moses Francis Johnson, born in 1859, but whose only, thus far, known marriage was in 1893, when he was about 34 – the Douglas County courthouse burned in 1886 destroying all (or almost all) earlier marriage records).

Two Johnson family members are buried in Row 12, Louisa Loveth (Lovie) Johnson, wife of John Johnson, and Cordelia Nelson, “Lovie’s” granddaughter, the daughter of “James Sylvester and Martha Jane” (Johnson) (Nelson). There are apparently three graves (or grave sites?) near (or perhaps immediately adjacent to) the one for Cordelia, two of which are marked by rocks and one of which is unmarked. It is possible that one or more of these three are burial locations of others related to the Johnson family.27
