David Epstein1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9

M, b. May 1848, d. after 1925
ChartsDescendants of Harry Ziegelneitzky
David Epstein was born in May 1848 in Russia (birth dates of Mar 1850 and the years circa 1852 and circa 1859 can be inferred from information in other censuses).9

David Epstein immigrated circa 1886 to the United States.9

David Epstein is listed as one of the "newly arrived Jewish men" who "formed the First Perth Amboy Hebrew Mutual Aid Society. This group was a fraternal association that provided varous mutual benefits to its members. Its first meetings were held in the home of Morris Slobodien at 79 Smith Street." This organization apparently evolved into the Shaarey Telfioh congregation, although the congregation seems to have met at private homes for some years until the first building with that name was constructed in 1891.10

The 1920 census indicated David Epstein was naturalized in 1893. However, the 1900 census had indicated he was an alien. It could be he completed his first papers at the earlier date.8,9

David Epstein married Rose Ziegelneitski, daughter of Harry Ziegelneitski and Doba Rosumski, circa 1895.9

David Epstein and Rose Ziegelneitski appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Perth Amboy, at Middlesex County, New Jersey at 37 Hall Avenue, enumerated 6 June 1900. The residence was listed as a rented home. The official date of that census was 01 June 1900. This census is unique in that month and year of birth were requested for each individual, in additon to age at the official census date. Both members of the household were listed as being able to read and write. David was listed as able to speak English, but Rose was listed as unable to speak English. Rose Ziegelneitski was listed as the mother of two children, with both of them living as of the date of the census.9 David Epstein was not listed as having an occupation in the 1900 census, but his wife seems to be listed as owner/operator of a dry goods store. Presumably, they operated this store together.9

David Epstein is listed as a "pioneer member" of the Shaarey Tefiloh Congregation (synagogue) circa 1903.11

David Epstein appeared on the census of 1910 at 207 Hall Avenue, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.3 He was listed as a retail merchant, dry goods, in the 1910 census.3

David Epstein lived in 1912 at 207 Hall Avenue, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.1 His occupation was listed as dry goods in 1912 at 207 Hall Avenue, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.1

David Epstein appeared on the New Jersey state census of 1915 at Perth Amboy, 2nd Ward, Middlesex County, New Jersey.7 He was listed as retired in the 1915 New Jersey state census.7

David Epstein and Rose Ziegelneitski appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of at Perth Amboy, at Middlesex County, New Jersey at 236 State Street (rear), enumerated 6 January 1920. The home was listed as owned with no mortgage. The official date of that census was 01 January 1920. Both members of the household were listed as being able to write and to speak English (the "able to read" column is unclear for David and blank for Rose). They apparently lived in a separate structure at the same address as Rose Ziegelneitski Epstein's daughter, Sophia Levine Kramer. The separate structure was at the rear of the lot, while the main house (the Kramer home) was closer to the street. One bit of family folklore (of uncertain provanence) to explain the two structures that the Epstein's kept their home more kosher than the Kramer's did. No occupation is listed for either Epstein in the 1920 census. The separate structure at the rear of the main house still existed at this address when Carl Fields visited Perth Amboy around 2005. At that time, the rear structure appeared to have been heavily damaged by a fire.8

Circa 1925 David Epstein lived at 236 State Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.6

The Epsteins moved to Israel (then British Mandate Palestine) circa 1925. Family legend is that their decision may have been, in part, because they were ardent Zionists.

David Epstein died after 1925 in Israel (British Palestine).12 Probably between 1925 and, the interval during which he died, David Epstein lived at Jerusalem, Palestine.13

Rose Ziegelneitski died on 16 February 1943 at 26 Menahem Street, Kerem Quarter, Jerusalem, Palestine, Israel (British Palestine), at age 86 (name reported as Rose Epsten). Cause of death listed as general debility, marasmus senilis, as reported by the attending physician, Dr. L Majaro, 9 Sepat Emet Street, Jerusalem. The report lists a friend as (perhaps) a witness to the death, or the person who notified the consulate. That person was Mr Abraham Jeshaia Shapira, 22 Chefetz Chaim Street, Zichron Mose Quarter, Jerusalum. The report indicates she was also known by the names Deborah Rachel (Rose) Epstein. William Smith appeared on the census of 1891 at 32 Ellison St, Jarrow, County Durham, England.3 He was Coal Trimmer in 1891.3

William Smith married Jane Johnson, daughter of Robert Johnson and Elizabeth White, on 15 April 1893 at South Shields, County Durham, England.5 William Smith was Trimmer in 1893.5 He lived in 1893 at 32 Ellison Street, Jarrow, County Durham, England.5

William Smith lived in 1895 at 21 James Street, Jarrow, County Durham, England.9 He was Coal Trimmer in 1895.9 He lived in 1900 at 48 Clayton St, Jarrow, County Durham, England.7 He was Coal Trimmer in 1900.7

William Smith appeared on the 1901 United Kingdon Census of Jarrow, Durham, England at 48 Clayton Street. The home was listed as containing three rooms. The official date of that census was the night of 31 March/1 April, 1901. His children Robert William Smith and Mary Elizabeth Smith were listed as living with him, along with his late wife's sister, Ann Johnson, listed as Annie Carter (sister-in-law). William Smith was listed as age 32, a widower, born in Jarrow, County Durham, England. His wife had died the previous year. William was listed as a coal trimmer (ships). A coal trimmer is normally a person who worked in the cargo hold of a ship keeping the coal pile spread out as it was loaded into the hold.2 He was Coal Trimmer in 1901.2

William Smith married Hannah Isobel (--?--) circa 1903.8

William Smith and Hannah Isobel (--?--) appeared on the 1911 Census of Jarrow, England at 44 Clayton Street. The home was listed as containing four rooms. The official date of that census was the night of 2 April, 1911. Their children Aaron Smith, Margaret Smith and Dora Smith were listed as living with them, along with two of William's children from a previous marriage, Robert William Smith and Mary Elizabeth Smith. William Smith and Hannah Isobel (--?--) were listed as ages 42 and 40, respectively, both married (to each other) for 8 years, and both born in Jarrow, Durham County, England. William was listed as a coal trimmer employed at a firm or location that appears to be "Slaiths" or "Slaith's" (possibly the name of a family or firm that owned a dock -- a coal trimmer is normally a person who worked in the cargo hold of a ship keeping the coal pile spread out as it was loaded into the hold). No occupation was listed for Hannah. She was listed as the mother of five children, all still living as of the census date (The elder two children living i tnhe household at the time of the 1911 census were stepchildren of Hannah Isobel. It is unclear if these two are counted among her "five," or if she had two older children not in her 1911 household.)

The 1911 census form (filled out by a member of the household) pretty clearly indicates that the residence is located on "Clayton" Street. Modern-day (2017) maps of Jarrow do not seem to list a "Clayton" Street, but the community does have a "Claytor" Street. Any signifigance to this is not clear because the geography and layout of the community seems to have changed drastically over the ~100 years between when the Smith and Moody families lived there and now (2017). For example, several ohter streets (such as Ellison Street) seem to have vanished.8
William Smith was Coal Trimmer in 1916.4
