Ira Sheldon Slobodien's name also appeared as Ira B Slobodien in at least one source document.3,4,5 He was born on 26 June 1925 at Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.1,2,6

Ira Sheldon Slobodien appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey in the household of his parents, Jacob Slobodien and Blanche Jonkler, at 109 Market Street.7

Ira Sheldon Slobodien appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Nachez, Adams County, Mississippi in the household of his parents, Jacob Slobodien and Blanche Jonkler, at 621 Washington Street. The official date of that census was 01 April 1940. He was listed as: age 16, single, attended school during March 1940, had completed two years of high school, born in New Jersey, and lived in Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey on 1 Apr 1935. He was not employed, or seeking employment, because he was a student. He reported no wages or non-wage income in excess of $50 in 1939.8

Prior to entering college, he had attended public schools in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Mississippi, Lousiana, and Georgia.9

He attended Clemson Agricultural College (now Clemson University). Clemson was then an all-male school, basically organized as a military school (almost the entire student body was in the Reserve Officer Training Corps and may have worn uniforms in public areas on campus even before the beginning of World War II).

He is said to have began studies at Clemson in September 1942 (“enlisted” at Clemson, in the jargon of the military school) and had completed six semesters when he was called to active duty in the US Navy in 1944 (which suggests he may have been attending college “full time”, i.e. including summers; alternatively the 1942 date could be a typographical error and he entered Clemson in 1941, but that is unlikely, since it would have meant he entered college only shortly after turning 16). He apparently would have graduated with the class of 1945 if his education had not been interrupted by military service.

He was an officer in the Clemson’s Calhoon Forensic Society (a public speaking organization) during the 1943-44 (corresponding secretary) and 1946-47 (treasurer) academic years. Clemson University was established, in part, by bequests from descendants of former US Senator and Vice President John C. Calhoon.

He apparently participated in intermural boxing during his first year at Clemson.9

When registering for the military draft circa 1943, Ira Sheldon Slobodien listed his residence as 602 E. Plum Street, Jessup, Wayne County, Georgia, and stated he was a student at Clemson University. He listed his mailing address as Box 604, Clemson, South Carolina. His Jessup Georgia phone number was given as 239-J. His draft card contains a "serial number" of W-116 and an "order number" of 11148.10

The 12 May 1944 issue of the college newspaper reported that he finished third in the completion for the Trustee Medal at the annual competition for best speaker among members of the Calhoon Forensic Society. The title of his speech was “Education vs Propaganda.” The 12 May 1944 issue of the college newspaper also indicated that he had been on the reception committee for the opening of a Recreational Reading Room in the Clemson Library.9

Entrered military service (U S Navy) 26 August 1944. In the Navy, he served in Maryland, New York (Midshipmen’s School at Columbia University), Bronx, Florida, California, and aboard the USS Bowdich, a hydrographic survey ship, which was part of the flotilla off Bikini Island preparing for Operation Crossroads, postwar tests of two atomic bombs. His duties included supporting oceanographic surveys of the Bikini Atoll region, which, in turn, provided support for the bomb test program. He was also on the staff of Crossroads, a newspaper circulated among the naval personnel stationed on and near the atoll for several months supporting the tests (which involved extensive preparations and follow-up surveys). He was transferred back to the United States for discharge (or more precisely, separation from active duty service) prior to the first detonation on July 1, 1946. His military "serial number" was 450947. An article describing some of the surveys performed by the USS Bowdich at Bikini Island was available on the internet in February 2017 at: https://naturalhistory.si.edu/onehundredyears/expeditions/bikini.html. This web article focuses on biological surveys performed by civilian scientists.6,9

The 16 Feb 1945 issue of the Clemson College newspaper indicated he had been named to the Honor List for the second (spring) semester of the 1943-44 academic year. The names on the Honors list for that semester had been announced at graduation ceremonies for the first semester of the 1944-45 academic year.9

The 5 October 1945 issue of the Clemson College student newspaper carried an excerpt from a letter he had written to the newspaper while he was serving in the US Navy, stationed in Moro Bay, California. He stated that although he was an “enthusiastic subscriber” to the newpaper and was homesick for Clemson.9

Released from US military (Navy) service 9 July 1946 as an ensign.6

He was on the staff of the student newspaper for a portion of his academic career, including part of the first semester of the 1946-47 academic year, when he was listed on the masthead as the Associate News Editor for several issues. Apparently, the only article that came out under his byline during this time was titled “’Major’ Martin Services College and Community for Half-Century,” which appeared in the 11 Nov 1946 issue.9

Ira Sheldon Slobodien graduated in 1947 from Clemson University, which, at that time, was called Clemson Agricultural College. His degree was in General Science. His formal (headshot) photo appeared at four places in college's yearbook (titled Taps) for his graduation year (1947): in the general list of candiidates for graduation, as a member of the Brandies Club (Jewish students), a member of the Calhoon Forensic Society (as described above), and a member of the Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Scholarship Fraternity. His "bio" bio page in the yearbook noted that (in addition to the items listed above) he was a military veteran, had (at various times) been on the staff of Tiger (the school newspaper, the school's mascot is a tiger, e.g., the athletic teams are the Clemson Tigers), a member of the Carnegie Music Society, a member of the Tiger Platoon (apparently an ROTC "fancy" drill team). The bio noted that he had achieved "academic honors" as a Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior (senior year grades were likely not yet available when the yearbook went to press). The "bio page" also contains an informal candid photo of him.1,11

He was listed as an Instructor in the English Department in the Clemson Agricultural College "Record" (apparently the college's "catalog") for the 1947-48 academic year. This catalog also documents that the had received the Arnold R. Boyd English Honor Key as the student in the 1947 graduating class who had received the highest average grade in English during his college career.12

During the 1947-48 academic year, when he was on the Clemson faculty as an Instructor in English, he was a member of the Clemson College Little Theater company. He played the role of Mr. Brook in the company’s production of “The Bishop Misbehaves” (performed November 14th, 1947) and the role of Wally Meyers in “The Male Animal” (performed April 29th and 30th, 1948 in the College Chapel). He was also an advisor to the Clemson Hillel-Brandies Club during the year he was on the Clemson faculty.9

Ira Sheldon Slobodien married Marianne Levy on 1 February 1948.1

His primary occupation during his life was college professor.1

Ira Sheldon Slobodien's cousin, Stanley Slobodien provided the following brief story about Ira: "He was fun to be with. I didn't see much of him. He did some quirky things which he told me himself - such as the time he departed a bus dragging a leg, drawing sympathy from the passengers. As soon as he reached the ground, he ran parallel to the vehicle in effect telling them "ha, ha" "fooled you".

"The few times he was in NJ, with us, he spent most of his time with my brother Howard."13

Ira Sheldon Slobodien married Audrey (--?--).

Ira Sheldon Slobodien lived on 27 December 1967 at San Francisco, California.5 He lived in July 1983 at Berkeley, California.14

He appears to have published a novel titled Doing Our Babbage in February 1992.15

Ira Sheldon Slobodien died on 28 February 1998 (Hebrew date: 2 Adar 5758) at Oakland, Alameda County, California, at age 72.16,1,17,6 He was buried at Mount Lebanon Cemetery, Glendale, Queens County, New York.17

Lazarus Isenberg was one of the organizers of the Young Men's Club, which was later incorporated as the Young Men's Hebrew Association (YMHA) at Perth Amboy (New Jersey). [The eventual (formally incorporated) YMHA may actually have descended from two or three different more informal clubs or associations.]16

He was also sometimes known by the given names of Eliazar and Lewis. He was born circa 1850 at Swualki, Russia.17

Lazarus Isenberg married Millie Borovsky, daughter of Gerson Barowsky and (---?--) (---?--), circa 1872.2 Lazarus Isenberg immigrated circa 1891 to the United States.2

Lazarus Isenberg is listed as a "pioneer member" of the Shaarey Tefiloh Congregation (synagogue) circa 1903.18 He was listed as a proprieter, liquor store, in the 1910 census.2

Lazarus Isenberg appeared on the census of 1910 at 1128 Blake Avenue, Brooklyn, New York.2 Between c1912 and c1914 Lazarus Isenberg lived at 276 Market Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey. Between c1912 and c1922 Lazarus Isenberg's occupation was listed as a bottler. He lived in 1916 at 211 Madison Avenue, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.9 As of between c1916 and c1919, Lazarus Isenberg lived at 211 Madison Avenue, Perth Amboy, New Jersey. Lazarus Isenberg died on 25 December 1922 at Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey, (the birth year of 1850, rather than 1850, which appears on his death certificate is probably a typogrpahical error.)4,5 He was buried at Congregation Shari Tephalo/Congregation Beth Mordecai Cemeteries, Florida Grove Road, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.5 His occupation was listed as retired at the time of his death.4

Lazarus Isenberg appears in an Isenberg Family photo that is included in the Perth Amboy Jewish History book. The photo was taken circa 1920.20

Notes and Observations: For several years around 1912-1916, several men with the surname of Isenberg operated a store in Woodbridge, New Jersey (but they resided in Perth Amboy -- most of them did). The given names of these men included Louis, Benjamin, Jacob, Moe, and Hyman. At least some of them were probably brothers, because the name "Brothers" appeared in the name of the store in at least one city directory. There may have been more than one store during this span of years. The living relatives known to Carl Fields as of around 2006 have not knowledge of these "other" Isenbergs. They are belieived to be a separate family (and the Louis Isenberg associated with this Woodbridge, New Jersey store is belived to be a separate individual from Lazarus Isenberg). However, the possibility of some as-yet-unknown connection between the families cannot be excluded with 100% certainty.
