A digital image of a newspaper cllipping was attached to this e-mail as was a copy of his death certificate. The clipping was from: the Willow Springs News, page 1 of Volume 5, No. 36, dated 7 May 1936.

The text of the e-mail is as follows:

This is a second e-mail relating to newspaper stories I recently located at the microfilm room of the Missouri Historical Society (that's a guess at it's actual name) on the University of Missouri campus in Columbia.

Several years ago I heard a family folklore story that Virgil Eugene Fields (a first cousin of my dad's, and a son of Lindsey W Fields) had been killed in a fight (perhaps in the parking lot of a roadhouse) in the early- or middle-1930s . The exact story is hazy in my memory (and, of course, I heard perhaps a fourth-hand retelling, 60 to 70 years after the event).

When Missouri death certificates came online a few years ago, I found a record for his death. It indicated he had died in an automobile accident. I just assumed, at the time, that the "folklore" story I had heard earlier somehow mixed him up with another family member (or perhaps someone who was not related). A copy of that death certificate is attached to this e-mail. I'll add here that I found his Missouri death certificate wholly by accident (while looking for the certificate for someone else, probably), because the version of the story I'd heard indicated he had died in Oklahoma. That confusion is understandable, since the death certificate indicates his remains were transferred to Oklahoma for burial.

One of my objectives at Columbia on the recent trip was to look for a newspaper story that might give details about his fatal accident. I found it (it is the second attachment to this e-mail). The news article indicates there was a strong element of truth in the original story I'd heard. He had apparently been stabbed in an altercation in (or near) a roadhouse, and was later (the same night) killed in the accident while on the way to obtain medical attention (driving himself, apparently). From the death certificate, looks like the accident was shortly after midnight.

Unfortunately, I had searched for (and located) this newspaper item near the end of my time in the microfilm reading room in Columbia (I had to leave for the Kansas City airport later in the day, also my parking meter time was about to expire). If I ever go back, I want to look at the next several issues of this newspaper to see if there was any follow-up investigation. Also, I'd like to look for newspapers in nearby towns (such as Mountain Grove and Cabool) to see if they have stories about this incident.

I'd suspect it would be difficult for anyone to have been prosecuted for his death (as, say, a manslaughter case) since the death certificate clearly states his death was by accident. However, it's not impossible there could have been a prosecution for something like assault or disturbing the peace. If a legal case was pursued, it might have triggered additional news stories with more details about the incident.

The attached article is from the Willow Springs News, page 1 of Volume 5, No. 36, dated 7 May 1936. The newspaper page looked a bit odd. The newspaper's page 1 "header"seemed to include the Willow Springs Republican and the Willow Springs Advocate (the result of mergers, I presume), with separate volume and number citations for those two apparently-merged newspapers. It was the multiple volume and number citations that seemed odd.

It looks like the news story contains at least one error. It seems to list a surviving brother named I. L. Fields. I believe that should have been J. L. Fields.

There is a second mystery concerning Virgil E Fields. His death certificate indicates he was a widower and his wife had been named Faye. I've never located any records relating to this Faye or to a marriage involving Virgil E Fields.
  • [S1516] Bonnie Heenan, Gassville, Arkansas, to Carl C Fields, e-mail, "Re: Death of Earl Casey (apparently aka Earl Southard) -- August 1936" (providing additional information on this death, including reaction of Earl's mother, Mary Southard, and follow-up on person arrested in conjunction with Earl's death), 9 July 2015; privately held by Carl Fields, Aiken, South Carolina, Computer Files (e-mails, Genealogy, or "Gene," section of Local Folders, and also in TMG Note-FTM for Eleanor Siegel).

    Text of e-mail message follows:

Thank you so much. Very interesting. I have heard the story by word of mouth all of my life. It was quite a shock to the family, then and always. Grandma Mary Southard had to go to stay in Oklahoma to try to recover. In a letter that she wrote home, at that time, she said, she had heard that the Rodney neighbors were passing a petition around to try to get the killer out of jail. That hurt her a lot.

He served a short sentence and was released, but did not live a long life. He had a adopted son, who was mentally challenged, who ended up killing him. I believe with a gun.

Text of e-mail message follows (slightly edited from original):

Cecil Ambrose Fields built a motel in Reedley right after WWII the same time Dad was building our house. Uncle Cecil was able to buy two front doors with glass panes and let Dad have one. They owned and ran the College Motel for years. We had a close relationship with Uncle Cecil Mom's dads brother. He was the one responsible for my dad going into construction first working in the San Francisco bay on Angel Island then going to Boulder City, Nevada and working on a pipe line project for water from Lake Meed to Henderson Nevada for a magnesium plant. Dad was drafted and Uncle Cecil bought out a grocery store and ran it in Boulder City until the war was over.

    Text of e-mail message follows:

My Mom, Shirley Southard Shelton, doesn’t think that Virgil ever married. Thank you so much for all of your research. This means that Mary Jane Fields Southard lost her brother and her son the same year. Her family sent her to Oklahoma to be with her family, she was so disraught. I read a letter that she wrote back home to Grandpa Southard about it. Thanks again. Bonnie.
