  • [S1411] Bureau of Land Management, "Land Patent Search," digital images, General Land Office Records, (http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/PatentSearch : 1 Jan 2015) Thomas M Johnson, (Missouri, Douglas County), 2911 (Doc. No.), AR5860_.312 (Acc/Ser No), 2619 (Misc Doc No). The entire file for this Homestead Land Grant was obtained from the US National Archives in the form of digital images mailed to Carl Fields on a compact disc.

The land was granted by the Springfield, Missouri land office. The application number was 2619 and the final certificate number was 2911.

The grant seems unusual in that it involves plots in two separate sections (Sections 29 and 32) of a specific township. However, the two sections are adjacent to one another so the homestead appears to be one contigious piece of land.

The file contained several items which are listed below in approximately chronological order (which is different from the order in which they appear on the conpact disc).

    1. Homestead Application 2619 for Springfield Land Office dated 4 Aug 1869. Land is the East 1/2 of Southwest Quarter of Section 29 and East 1/2 of Northwest Quarter of Section 32. Both are in Township 27 of Range 11. Grant contains 160 acres. Homestead applicatons are under provisions of act of Congress approved May 20, 1862 (some printed forms in the file also mention a March 21, 1864 congressional approval date and at least on also refers to Section 2291 of the Revised Statutes of the United States).

    2. Affadavit by T M Johnson dated 4 Aug 1869 relating to Application 2619. States he is citizen, head of a family, actually intends to settle on, reside on, and work the land, and that application is for sole benefit of him and his family. Also states he is a resident of Douglas County, Missouri.

    3. Two copies of receipt for $14 related to Application 2619 (one copy with final certicate number of 2911 also written on it).

    4. Final Affadavit Required of Homestead Claimants by Thomas M Johnson dated 6 April 1876. States he is citizen and head of a family and has resided on the land since 4 Aug 1869. Also he has never before had benefit of the Homestead Law. This document appears to give his mailing address (probably nearest post office) as Hickory Springs, Wright County, Missouri.

    5. Supporting affadavit (Final Homestead Proof?) by William Creasy and Marion Trusty dated 6 April 1876 (both of men providing this supporting information signed via a mark, attested by Thos. M Grant). They indicate they have known Thos. M Johnson for 7 years past, he is head of a family with a wife and seven children, is a citizen, and no other person has resided on this land and is entitled to the right of homestead or presemption. They say his has settled on the land since 4 April 1869 and has built "a log hewed house 18 x 20 feet, plank floor and shingle roof, stone chimney, two doors, and is a comfortable house to live in". Also, "since said settlement, he has plowed, fenced, and cultivated about 20 or 25 acres of said land, and has made the following improvements thereon, to wit: frame kitchen, 18 feet square, log store house 16 feet square, and planted about twenty five fruit trees."

    6. Two copies of receipt dated 6 Aug 1876 (Final Receiver's Receipt 2911, Receiver's Office, Springfield, Missouri) indicating Thomas M Johnson of Wright County, Missouri has paid $4, being the balance of payment associated with Application 2619. One of these receipts is stamped indicating it is a duplicate and a second stamp indicating that (illegible) was delivered by R. R. The abbreviation "R.R." is likely for "railroad". The illegible word might be something like "pat." (for "patent", perhaps), or possibly an abbreviation for "payment".

    7. A copy of a certificate dated 6 April 1876 (Final Certificate 2911 relating to Application 2691, Springfield, Missouri Land Office) indicating that all requirments have been completed and that, upon presentation of this certificate, Thomas M Johnson shall be entitled to a patent for the tract of land. The 6 April 1876 date appears on the "front side" of the certificate. An image of what is apparently the back side of this certificate also contains this date. It contains the additional information that the document was approved on 18 May 76 and that the patent was recorded in Volumen 6, Page 312 on 10 June 1876. This "back side" also contains the notation "8-23-", whose meaning is unknown (but a similar notation appers on the reverse side image of at least one other document in the file).

    8. A note (or possibly an image of the back side of one of the other sheets) indicating the patent for the homestead of Thomas M Johnson (No. 2911) was delivered to William Wood, August 7, 1880. Apparently, Wood was going to be in Springfield and Johnson had given him the certificate and asked him to pick up the actual patent while he was there.

  • [S1529] Delmer Horton, Sanger CA, to Carl C Fields, e-mail, "Re: Otha L Baldwin" (concerning health of Lois Fields Horton, Miles Baldwin, and 1940-era resistance to "Oakies" entering California), 1 March 2014; privately held by Carl Fields, Aiken, South Carolina, Computer Files (e-mails, Genealogy, or "Gene," section of Local Folders, and also in TMG Note-FTM for Eleanor Siegel).

Text of e-mail message follows (slightly edited from original):

    Carl--

I know it has been a while since I answered you. We have been in Sanger for the past six months providing care for Mom, Lois Fields Horton. She fell and broke her hip in June and spent 100 days in a rehab facility then came home for us to care for. It has been a 24/7 job and part of the time especially at bedtime taking three of us. We committed to six months and that time would be up March 1st. Mom has deteriated a lot both physically and mentally. We have good days and bad days. Unfortuately two weeks ago this coming Sunday Mom woke up in her chair and thought she could still walk and fell and broke her right ankle in two places. Wanda and I had stepped out to visit one of mom's first cousins on the Fields side in the mobile home part where they live and while gone for a few minutes that is when the accident happened. Mom is now in a skilled nursing facility and this will be long term.

I had made a copy of your e-mail 4 Jan 2014 and on one of Mom's good days asked if she could remember anything about the incident of Otha Baldwin's death. She said when they came to Sanger in 1939 they stayed in one of Miles Baldwins cabins. His brother was married to her aunt Ida Fields Baldwin her dad's sister. She said she had no recollection of the event and did not know of Otha Baldwin. Miles and Linus were brothers and Mom knew them from Missouri.

You were amazed at how many people were related that were in Sanger. Mom left Missouri in 1939 and the night before they left they decided to go to Idaho instead of California not knowing at the time that the LA police had posted men at the entrance to California and by force were not allowing the Okies into the state because they were undesirables. Idaho had no such policy and they were accepted. While in route to Idaho they stopped and picked fruit or vegitables any where they could find a job. When the fall of the year came is when they came into Sanger. The gathering place was around the city park. Mom said when they drove up there were several people she had know in Missouri. They had a country store there and knew a lot of people. My Dad's family came by a similar route first going to Idaho then coming into Sanger in 1938. I have never found out who in the families were the first to come to Sanger but there was quite an influx of people clear back in the early twenties before the Great Depression.

On occasions I can still get some information from Mom and I have noticed that some of the stories are changing. It makes me to know that if I am going to write my own history I had better get on with it. We have moved back to our trailer at our daughter's for the first time in six months. I now have privileges of the Internet and we will probably stay here till the first week of April before returning to our home in Montana.

Maybe I will have a little time to explore the Internet and see if I can find some more family information. Stay in touch one of your distant cousins Delmer Horton.

  • [S2097] Jane Johnson, (11 Mar 1865 (from index card)), US Civil War Pension File (Widow), Cert # 130,892 (widow of Harvey Johnson, Pvt., Company A (or possibly Company B), "Bowen's Brigade", later designated as part of 10th Missouri Volunteer Cavalry Reigment, Civil War), pension case file, widow's pension application 85,768, filed 11 Mar 1865, certificate 130.892 (there had been a later application numbered 140,310, which seems to have been merged into 85.768) ; Civil War and Later Pension Files; Department of Veterans Affairs, Record Group (RG) 15; National Archives, Washington, D.C..

The original pdf file obtained from NARA contained 88 items (page images). These were marked to show the original page-image sequence using a handwritten sequence number in an approximate handwritten circle. The page-images were then re-arranged into an approximate chronological sequence. The items were then numbered in this sequence using handwritten sequence numbers inside an approximate handwritten square. These "square box" sequence numbers were incorporated into individual file names when the images were converted to jpg format. Images in this chronological sequence are cited within the narratives for various individuals as "Items" within the pension file.

A few dates were indeterminate. A few page-images appear to be correspondence or action logs (or something very similar), where several dates appear on the same page-image. In addition, some page images contained incomplete information, duplicate information, or information not considered useful. Several of these low-value page-images were not included as data base exhibits. These items were omitted from the image exhibits attached to the long-format sources citation in this database.

Nelson *~* (contributor 46924235). This "page" (as viewed on 26 Oct 2021) seemed to have issues. The death location shown on that view-date was "Raymah, Yemen," which is almost certainly an "autocorrect" error of some type. It should have been Raymonville MO. In addition, the William L Musgrove and Thomas William Johnson are probably the same indiividual (he apparently from his mother's second marriage, but was incorrectly listed with the surname Musgrove in the 1850 census).
