CAUTION

Family history information for this indivudual is still under construction. It is possible that two of more people have inadvertenly and incorrectly been combined into a single individual in this family history web site.

Come back in a few months to (hopefully) learn more about this individual.

She was born between 1775 and 1784 at Perquimans County, North Carolina.2

Allegedly, John Clayton and Betsy Jarman (whose surname was also sometimes given as German) lived together in Clayton's house from January 1800 until at least some time in 1813. They were said to have had "several" children, including two who were legitimized by an act of the North Carolina legislature.1,3

Bets Jarman was recorded as purchasing one or more items at the sale of personal property belonging to the estate of John Jarman in 1806 in Tyrrell County, North Carolina. Items that she purchased included: a cow, one piece of woodware, and six spoons.4

Bets Jarman was recorded as purchasing one or more items at the sale of personal property belonging to the estate of John Clayton in 1814 at Tyrrell County, North Carolina. Items that she purchased included: bed and furniture (2 lots), 3 chairs, 2 pewter plates, 2 pails, 1 water pot, 2 combs, 8 ducks, 12 geese, and 1 bushel of wheat.5

Betsy Jarman died before 1830 in White County, Tennessee.6,7

This narrative is for a woman called "Betsy Jarman" in three articles written in the 1995-1996 era by Edwin A. Norman. There are several other references to this woman -- or possibly some or all of these references are to another woman with a similar name who lived in the same area around the same time (or to other women with similar names who lived in the same area around the same time). These other names included Elizabeth Jarman, Elizabeth German, Bets Jarman, Eliza Jarman, and Eliza Clayton. In other words, it there were indeed two (or more) women with similar names lviing in that are (at that time), it is quire possibly their life stores could be comingled in this narrative.1,8,3

Catherine (--?--) CCF Note (3-13-2008) -- In this household in the 1881 census, there is a Margret E Borrowdale (age 7, born in Liverpool), who is listed as a niece. It is not clear how she fits in. I suspect she is related to Catherine, but, even if that is correct, it is not clear if she is daughter of Catherine's brother (which suggests Catherine's maiden name is Borrowdale) or daughter of a sister (which gives no direct information as to Catherine's maiden name). Similarly, there is a Margret Henderson (age 16, born South Shilelds) in this household, who is listed as a servant. Not clear if she is also a relative. There is another Margaret Henderson, of about the same age, who IS related, but she appears elsewhere in the 1881 census. She was born circa 1845 at Bishop Auckland, County Durham, England. The 1871 census of England listed her location of birth as "Cumberland Scotby."2
