>From my Oct 20 visit to the NC State Archives.

There were two documents in the file. Attached images are of each side
of each document.

Second document seems to me to say widow's name was Theney(?) and that
there were two minor children (but doesn't list their names). I may
have other things on this estate from the county court minute books.

CCF Note (4/30/2008) -- E-mail added to capture my descriptions of documents photographed in 2006 at NC State Archives:

This is the first of what will probably be several e-mails sending photos of selected pages of Tyrrell County Court Minutes. I think what I had in mind was to see if these minutes would note when the court awarded the funds from estates to the widow for her one or two years of support, and thereby (hopefully) find or confirm the names of various widows from that entry.

I haven't yet looked thru all of these systematically, but it appears that I also took photos of a few pages that weren't related to estates, but rather were for other types of cases, but involving names that seemed familiar to me. Also, while going thru these, I apparently forgot that the date is sometimes difficult to find. What I should have done is that, when I photographed an interesting entry, I should have gone back a few pages and then photographed the entry for the beginning of that term of the court. That's generally the only place where one can get a full date (month, day, and year). Thus in several of these these entries (perhaps most or all of them), I don't have a date (other than the range of years for the entire volume).

Also, it looks like the pages have been removed from the original books and rebound, probably into different size books (different number of pages) than the original volumes. The page numbers at the bottom of each page (or perhaps each odd-numbered page) were apparently put in when the pages were rebound.

I just realized (from looking thru my printouts off the Archives web site involving Tyrrell County) that they have something about widows support dowers in their electronic "card catalog" -- and that's what I'm probably really looking for. However, I don't remember seeing anything like that in the "paper" card catalog when I was there. Based on something else I have (probably from the Tyrrell County web site), it might be that these "support" records exist for only one or two years --and all from the 1900s.

The images attached to this e-mail are from "Tyrrell County Court Minutes, 1803-1808, CR 096.301.9". I believe the "9" at the end of this "catalog number" means this is the 9th volume of these minutes, but I'm not sure (the "CR" probably means "county record").

Image 3246 (page 145 of the bound volume of minutes -- 3rd item from bottom of page) seems to be a page I photographed because it mentioned a case involving John Clayton (posting bond for support a child borne by Nancy Liverman). Next item on that page involves a William Clayton.

Image 3248 (bottom of page 148) involves the estate of John Cullipher.

Image 3249 (top of page 149, two entries) involves estate of John Cullipher. On this page you can see an example of how they record adjourning for the day, and then reconvening the next day, without recording the date.

The images attached to this e-mail are from "Tyrrell County Court Minutes, 1803-1808, CR 096.301.9". As with the stuff sent in the previous message, I wasn't smart enough to capture dates or the specific court sessions (such as spring or fall).

The first two images that I've attached (3250 and 3253, pages 163 and 169 from the book of court minutes) seem to indicate that Pethina(?) Cullipher was the widow of "Jno" (probably John) Cullipher.

The third image(3252, which is of page 168 of the volume) seems to indicate that Ann Cullipher was the widow of Henry Cullipher.

These images are from NC Tyrrell County Court Minutes, Volume 10, 1808-1811 (CR 096.501.10).

Image 3269 (if I'm reading it correctly) seems to appoint Josiah Jarman as overseer (?) of the Frying Pan Road in room (?) of John Sykes (?). I wonder if "in room of" might mean "in place of". This is page 31 of Vol 10.

Image 3270 provides for 12 pounds (money) to the widow (name not given) of John Cullipher for 2 years support of his children. I think we also saw this in an estate document -- and maybe a transcription is on the Tyrrell County web site. My photo missed much of the page number on the adjacent odd-numbered page. This John Cullipher item might be on page 76.

Image 3271 contains two items dealing with Henry German/Jarman as administrator of the estate of Isaac Sawyer. One also mentions Josiah German/Jarman (as sort of a bondsman, I think). Was Isaac Sawyer the father-in-law of Henry Jarman? I have Ruth Sawyer as the name of Henry's wife, but I don't have parents listed for her. My photo missed the page number totally on this one.

Image 3272 seems to appoint 3 or 4 people to settle a dispute between Josiah Jarman and John Simmons involving the boundary between their property (I'm pretty uncertain about the reading of this one). Again, looks like the photo missed the page number. He was born between 1755 and 1774.1,7,8

John Cullifer witnessed the will of James Lary on 8 September 1775 in Tyrrell County, North Carolina. Others who witnessed the will were Mary Cullipher and John Jarman (there were variant spellings in the names of the witnesses).9,10 John Cullipher lived in 1779 at Tyrrell County, North Carolina.1,11

John Cullipher married Pethina (--?--).

John Cullipher owned 12 acres in 1784 at Tyrrell County, North Carolina.1,12

John Cullipher owned 60 acres in 1786 at Tyrrell County, North Carolina.13

John Cullipher was recorded as a head of household in the in 1790 census for at Tyrrell County, North Carolina. The official date of that census was 02 August 1790. The census information indicated the household consisted of the following (free white) individuals: 1 male age 16 or above (born before c1775) and 2 females.14

John Cullipher transfered a land grant for 300 acres at Tyrrell County, North Carolina, to John Jarman (Grant 634, Warrant 11). The actual transfer was dated July 29, 1793, but the land grant was not issued until 16 July 1795.15,16,17

John Cullipher was recorded as a head of household in the in 1800 census for at Tyrrell County, North Carolina. The official date of that census was 4 August 1800. The census information lists two John Cullipher ("Cullifer") households, each with the same number and age distribution of males and females. These are believed to be duplicate entries for a single household. The census information indicated the household consisted of the following (free white) individuals: 1 male age 0-9 (born between c1791 and c1800), 1 male age 26-45 (born between c1755 and c1774), 3 females age 0-9 (born between c1791 and 1800), 1 female age 10-16 (born between c1784 and c1790), and 1 female age 26-45 (born between c1755 and c1774).1,8

John Cullipher was granted 100 acres of land (co-owned with Henry Cullipher) in 1805 at Tyrrell County, North Carolina.4

John Cullipher died circa 1806 at Tyrrell County, North Carolina.1,2

His estate was probated circa 1808 at Tyrrell County, North Carolina.3 His estate continued in probate in 1809 at Tyrrell County, North Carolina.2,6 His estate was probated after 1809 at Tyrrell County, North Carolina.2,6

There is a record of a person named George Jarman, died 22 June 1907, buried in the Mountain Home National Cemetery, Johnson City, Washington County, Tennessee. That burial is likely a different person, since the George Jarman of interest to this family would have been too young to serve in the Civil War and likely too old to be the Spanish American War.2

There are two indexes, one where transactions are listed by buyer and the other where they are listed by seller. These indexes do not provide any detailed information, such as the amount of acerage or location or arrangement of the property. In several instances the microfilm photographs of the actual deed books was overexposed, so that only a fraction of the words on the pages giving the detailed descriptions could be deciphered.
