Elizabeth Haws (listed as Elzphen Hawz, and listed as a male -- but presumed to be the same person as the female Elizabeth, listed as a member of this family in the 1860 census) appears in the1850 Federal Census of District 64, of Nodaway County, Missouri in the household of her parents, Solomon Haws and Elizabeth Johnson. She was listed as age 11, born in Alabama, no occupation was listed for her. She was not listed as attending school within a year prior to the official census date. The existence of an approximately 20-year-old female in the family (the younger Elizabeth) is not only approximately consistent with the 1860 with the 1850 census (although the “11-year-old” with a name roughly similar to Elizabeth in that 10-years-earlier census is listed as a male), but also roughly consistent with the presence of a female in the zero-to-5-year-old range in the 1840 census for “S Haws” in the 1840 census of DeKalb County Alabama. This set of alternative possible relationships (not presumed for this narrative, as of May 2020) is briefly described with respect to the 1840 census in the narrative for Solomon Haws.her.1

Sampson G Haws (listed as Sampson G Hawz)appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of District 64, of Nodaway County, Missouri in the household of his parents, Solomon Haws and Elizabeth Johnson. He was listed as age 6, born in Alabama, no occupation was listed for him. The columns related to being able to read and write were left blank. No disabilities or other special situations were listed for him.1

Sampson G Haws appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Texas Township, at Dent County, Missouri in the household of his parents, Solomon Haws and Elizabeth Johnson.3

He enlisted in Company D of the 48th Missouri Volunteer Infantry (Union Army) on 4 September 1864 at Rolla, Missouri. He served unitl 9 May 1865. His military record listed his height at 5 feet 10 inches, and stated that he had blue eyes, light (color) hair, a fair complection, age 20, and his previous occupation was farmer. It also stated he was born in "Calvin" County, Alabama (which may have been his closest understanding of his actual birth location, which was likely DeKalb County, Alabama). He was apparently a private throuhgout his army service.2

Sampson G Haws married Mary E Wallis on 23 July 1865 at Dent County, Missouri.2

By the 1870s or 1880s, he was a minister (of a yet unknown denomination). He appears to have often been referred to by the titles “Parson” and/or “Reverend” plus his last name.2

[On 5 November 1878 (5 Nov 1878) he was elected to a four-year term as the Douglas County, Missouri, Clerk of County Court and Clerk of Circuit Court. His term of office commenced on 26 November 1878. He was re-elected to these offices for a second four-year term on 7 November 1882, with the second term of office commencing 24 November 1882. Apparently he held two separate offices simultaneously. A list of Douglas County, Missouri, office-holders between 1857 and 1902 indicates individual person often held both of these offices concurrently, but there were two different office holders during certain terms. He was referred to the “Recorder” in at least source, perhaps reflecting these clerk positions accepted and “recorded” court records and other papers. However, there might be some confusion in this source document, because the county apparenlty established office called Recorder of Deeds, starting (apparently) in August 1894.

After the completion of his term, he was convicted for committing criminal offenses while in office (as indicated below). He was apparently a member of the Union Leader (political) Party. This may have been a local or regional Missouri political party. CCF speculates it would be (at least loosely) associated (in some way) with the national Republican, because (based on the name, and Haws’s Union Army service during the Civil War) it would seem to be descended from political organizations that wanted Missouri to remain in the United States (the “Union”) during the Civil War.4,2

Several of the following brief items are bases on what appear to be quotations of paraphrases of newspaper articles concerning criminal charges related to actions during Sampson G Haws’s term as an unknown place Recorder. Some of these have been edited slightly for clarity. The dates that appear in conjunction with these items are most likely the date that the newspaper sources for the items were published, not the actual date that the event occurred.2

The cases against S. G. Haws have been moved to Howell County on a change of venue (and, still later, seem to have been moved to Ozark County).2

Haws convicted: the case of the State against S. G. Haws for forgery, which was taken to Ozark County, on a change of venue, came up in the circuit court of that county Tuesday and this morning we learn that the jury returned a verdict of guilty and he was sentenced to two years in the (Missouri State) penitentiary. A similar article appeared in the Springfield Leader on 24 May 1888. That Springfield Leader article identified him as Reverend S. G. Haws, ex-circuit and county clerk of Douglas County, indicated that the forged items were “fee bills,” and referred to him as a “republican”. However, and (undated) article from the Ozark News called him a “dyed-in-the-wool democrat … elected by the democrats and independents”.2

The Marshal of the Supreme Court of Missouri was down last Sunday and took Parson Haws to the state pententiary at Jefferson City, where he will serve out a two years sentence for forgery.2

The friends of Parson Haws have been making an effort to secure his freedom and release from the penitentiary so far without success.2

He apparently had an advertisement published (probably in the Douglas County Herald): “I have a 240 acre tract of land six miles north of Ava, 125 acres in cultivation, for sale cheap or exchange for smaller farm. Call and see me. I must and will trade. Respectfully, S. G. Haws.”.2

The following item was published (probably in the Douglas County Herald): “Parson S. G. Haws, the leader of the Union Leader Party in Findley township, was in town Monday”. This apparently indicates he had been released from prison prior to the end of his 2-year sentence.2

Sampson G Haws died on 13 December 1916 at Wheeler County, Texas, at age 71.2 He was buried at Shamrock Cemetery (Block C, Lot 75, Space 4), Shamrock, Wheeler County, Texas.2

A discrepancy exists between the male “Aaron F Johnson” (age 2) listed for this household in the 1860 census and the female “Frances Johnson” (age 12) listed for the same household in the 1870 census. Based on the preponderance of information outside of these two censuses, it appears these entries relate to one male individual named Aaron Francis Johnson (1858-1911). For clarity, most of the information reported in the narrative concerning this individual taken from the 1870 census has been “adjusted” to reflect his male status. Care should be taken to avoid confusing the 1859-1911 Aaron Francis Johnson with his uncle (1837-1905) of the same name.3
