Introduction and Background for David Evan Philips and Johanna Ernestina Hecker

This narrative section is for one of two individuals, David Evan Philips and Johanna Ernestina Hecker, who were married to each other for probably 12-or-more years and had several children. However, the records concerning them (at least those that have been located as of June 2020) are fragmentary and confusing, which causes these two individuals to seem mysterious. One of several “mysteries” associated with them is: "Where were they born?" Some sources indicate both were from the US (born in Pennsylvania), while other sources suggest he was born in Wales and she was born in what is now Germany (either what was Prussia or Bavaria at the time of her birth).

Johanna Ernestina Hecker died in 1891, at about age 36, leaving behind several small children (the youngest only 3 or 4 months old). Her death (understandably) created a family crisis, after which some of the children seem to have remained with their father, some lived with another family member, and some were cared for by people who appear to have been unrelated (the children may have been “assigned” to not-family guardians by a court, as “wards”). Some of the children assumed the surnames of the families that raised them, which greatly complicates researching the family. Since some children were separated from others in their family at a young age, they would (understandably) not have known much about their biological parents. This may have contributed to the creation of later records containing inconsistent information about David Evan Philips and Johanna Ernestina Hecker (including where they were born).

The relatively common names of David Evan Philips and his parents (especially in Eastern Pennsylvania, where he first appears in public records) is another factor in making this family difficult to research. There appear to have been several people with similar names, and of a similar age, living within a few-county coal-mining region. One would think Johanna Ernestina Hecker is a relatively rare name, making her relatively easy to trace, but that has (thus far, as of June 2020) not proved to be true.

Among the many things that are uncertain are (1) if the parents of David Evan Philips ever immigrated to the United States (and, if they did, where did they reside) and (2) the identity of the biological parents of Johanna Ernestina Hecker.

The individual-person narrative for Johanna Ernestina Hecker lists a woman with a similar name (Johanna Ernestine Hecker) as her adoptive mother, but this is inferred; the older woman might have been her biological mother. In several places in this narrative, the daughter has the term "the younger" attached to her name, while the term "the elder" is attached to the mother's name in order to help distinguish one from the other.

Another of the (several) mysteries associated with David Evan Philips concerns his brothers. In addition to (at least) one full brother, William Philips (born c1865), he had a (half?) brother named Daniel Williams, mentioned in one source document that has been located thus far (as of 28 June 2020). Curiously, Daniel seems to be between David and William in birth order. A second Williams-surnamed brother (this one explicitly identified as a half brother), Thomas Williams (birth year unknown), also appears in a single as-yet-located source document. It is not impossible that Daniel Williams and Thomas Williams might some day be determined to be the same person (perhaps he was sometimes known by a first name and other times known by a middle name). The sketchy information concerning the connections between David Evan Philips and the Williams brother (or brothers) suggests the possibility of some type of informal adoption, something that seems to be unusually common in this family. Additional research on these family relationships would be useful.

For now (as this is written in late June 2020), "both" half-brothers (assuming they are, indeed, two distinct individuals) have been arbitrarily assumed to be related to the two known "full" bothers (David Evan Philips and William Philips) by only their mother.3,4

Start of Chronological Narrative for this individual.

At least one source document lists his name as David Edward Phillips (different middle name).5

David Evan Philips was born on 17 July 1855 at Blossburg, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, although some sources list his birthplace as Wales.6,2,5,7

An individual who could be the David Evan Philips of concern in this narrative appeared (listed as David Philips) on the 1870 Federal Census of Lackawanna Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania in the household of Jane Jenkins and William Jenkins, enumerated 9 August 1870. The official date of that census was 01 June 1870. He was listed as age 17, born in Wales. An occupation of “Driver” was listed for him. He did not attend school within a year prior to the official census date. He was listed as able to read and write. No disabilities or other special situations were listed for him.

The name David Philips was relatively common in this section of Pennsylvania at this time (in part because the local region has a relatively large number of Welsh immigrant families, many of whom worked in the coal mining industry). It is unclear if this particular David Philips in the 1870 census is the same person as the David Evan Philips of interest in this narrative. However, he is is relatively close in age and geographical location to the David Philips listed in the 1880 census (whose location of birth is uncertain, despite it being listed as Pennsylvania in that 1880 census, due to conflicting information in various other later source documents).

(Later Note by Compiler (29 June 2020) -- This 1870 census entry was added for David Evan Philips when I believed he was born in Wales. This seemed to be the closest fit for him in the 1870 census on that basis. I now suspect he may have been born in the US, in Pennsylvania, (or, at least, later in life, usually pretended he was born there, whenever he had to list a place of birth in a government document). It seems to have been his descendants who sometimes listed their father's place of birth as Wales on census forms (and possibly other forms). Some of these entries by descendants were made several years after his death. Thus, I'm now even less certain it is the "correct" David Philips on this 1870 census schedule. Will someday try to make another "run" at him in the 1860 and 1870 censuses, especially now that I am aware of the existence of his brother William and that he had at least one half-brother.)8

David Evan Philips married Johanna Ernestina Hecker, daughter of Fredrich Schreivogel and Johanna Ernestine Hecker.9

David Evan Philips (listed as David Phillips) and Johanna Ernestina Hecker (listed as Annestena Phillips) appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Cherry Township, Sullivan County, Pennsylvania, enumerated 28 June 1880. The official date of that census was 01 June 1870. David’s age was listed as 26. Johanna’s age was listed as 24. They were both listed as having been born in Pennsylvania and as being husband and wife. The two adults in the household were listed as being able to read and write. David’s occupation was listed as Miner. Johanna’s occupation was listed as keeping house. His parents were both listed as born in Pennsylvania. Her parents were both listed as born in Bavaria. Their daughter, Anne Philips (age 6 months, born January 1880), was listed as living with them. No one was listed as attending school. The two parents were listed as being able to read and write. In the census, the surname for all members of the family is spelled with two “L’s”.7

His wife, Johanna Ernestina Hecker, died on on 4 August 1891, probalbly in Sullivan County, Pennsylvania. Her death left him with 6 young children. The age of each child and where the appear on some later censuses are described in the Notes and Observatons Section, below.10

David Evan Philips (listed as David Philips) appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of German Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, enumerated 22 June 1900. The official date of that census was 01 June 1900. David’s age was listed as 44 (born July 1855). This census is unique (up to that time) in that month and year of birth were requested for each individual, in addition to age at the official census date. He was listed as born in Pennsylvania. His father and mother were both listed as born in Wales. He was listed as a widower, who had apparently been married for 10 years prior to his late wife’s death (but this “10” was crossed out, possibly because the number of years widows and widowers had been married was not a category of information that was requested or recorded during this 1870 census). His occupation was listed as Carpenter.

Three of his children Jennie Philips, William Charles Phillips and John Arthur Philips (ages 19, 17, and 15) were listed as living with him. The family surname is spelled as Phillips (with two “L’s”) in this census. Ancestry’s transcriber incorrectly recorded the name of one of these children, William, as “Matthew”. The handwriting in this section of the census schedule is somewhat unclear. All members of the household were listed as being able to read, write, and speak English. The residence was listed as rented and not on a farm.11

David Evan Philips married Amelia Hager, daughter of George Washington Hager and Virginia (--?--), on 24 August 1903 at Uniontown, Fayette County, Pennsylvania. The license (Fayette County #13905) had been issued on 20 August 1903. The marriage was performed by William Truitt (probable spelling). The source document does not provide any indication as to whether he was a minister, a justice of the peace, or an alderman. David Evan Philips was listed as age 48, born in Blossburg (Tioga County) Pennsylvania, resident of Uniontown, parents names were John and Mary, his prior wife had died on 6 Aug 1891, and his occupation was Carpenter. Amelia Hager was listed as age 33, born in Brownsville Pennsylvania, resident of Uniontown, parent names were George and Virginia, no prior marriage, and her occupation was Dressmaker.2,12

His second wife, Amelia Hager, died on 7 October 1905.12

No record for David Evan Philips has yet been located in the 1910 US Federal census.

David Evan Philips married Emily J Miller.13,14

When his son, William Charles Phillips, registered for the World War 1 draft on 12 September 1918, he listed David Evan Philips as his nearest relative. The address he listed for David at that time was Portland, Oregon (with no street address provided).15

David Evan Philips (listed as David E Phillip – with no “s” at the end of the surname) and Emily J Miller (listed as Emily J Phillip – with no “s” at the end of the surname) appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Denver, Denver County, Colorado at 2140 Champa Street, enumerated 8 January 1920. The official date of that census was 01 January 1920. The home was listed as rented and not on a farm (no agricultural census schedule was associated with this household). David Evan Philips and Emily J Miller were listed as ages 64 and 41, both born in Pennsylvania, both married, and both native English speakers. Both were listed as able to read and write. David’s occupation was listed as a Carpenter in the housing industry (and as a paid worker). No occupation was listed for Emily. No one in the household was listed as attending school. His parents were both listed as born in Wales. Her father was listed as born in Pennsylvania, while her mother was listed as born in West Virginia.13

David Evan Philips and Emily J Miller (listed as Emily J Phillips) lived at 41 E Church Street, Pennsylvania, circa 1923 according to the Uniontown Fayette County city directory. His occupation was listed as a carpenter.14

David Evan Philips died on 13 February 1925 at Muse, Cecil Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, at age 69. His death certificate indicates he died of a probable cerebral hemorrhage, after a brief acute illness of only about 15 minutes. The death certificate lists chronic interstitial nephaitisas (at type of kidney failure) over about a 5 year period as a (possible?) contributing factor to this death. The death certificate indicates he was employed as a laborer at National Coal Company at the time of his death. Muse was apparently a company village near the entrance to a coal mine. The informant on his death certificate was his son, William Charles Phillips, who was apparently a resident of Muse.

The names and birthplaces of David's parents are listed as "unknown" on the death certificate, so William was apparently unaware of their names (or did not have that information readily available to him). A date of birth does appear on the death certificate, so William may have known that (or possibly it was avaiilable from employment records, if David was employed at Muse, not there for just a brief visit). The physician signing the death certificate, whose address was also Muse, indicates he had treated Philips between 1 June 1924 and the time of his death. This suggests that Philips may have been an employee living in Muse for the last several months of his life.

The death certificate indicates he was married at the time of his death, but does not list the name of his wife (or indicate clearly if she was also residing in Muse at the time of David's death).6,5

David Evan Philips was buried at Park Place Cemetery, Uniontown, Fayette County, Pennsylvania. An obituary indicated the death occurred suddenly at the home of his son William Charles Phillips, whose address was House 173, in Muse Pennsylvania. The funeral was to be held on 16 Feb 1925 in Uniontown, David Evan Philips's former home town. The obituary indicated he was a member of the Central Christian Church (in Uniontown presumably); Local 1010, Carpenters and Joiners, of Uniontown; and the Knights of Malta, of Kent, Ohio. Survivors include his wife (whose name is not listed), and (quoting from the newspaper article): "Mrs. C. G. Dessenbaugh, Mrs Edward Johnson, both of Masontown, Pa; Miss Mabel Phillips (and) W. C. Phillips, Muse; J. A. Phillips, Uniontown, Pa; Arthur L. Phillips, Lopez, Pa; and Leon David Phillips, residence unknown. One brother, William Phillips, resides on a ranch in South Dakota. A half-brother, Thomas Williams, also survives." In the year 2020, this obituary proved to be an important document for locating records of (some) family members.

The obituary seems to indicate that he lived in Muse at the time of his death (primarily because that is listed as the residence of his youngest daughter, Mabel, and Uniontown is referred to as his former home). It is not clear if he lived there with his son, William (whose home he died at) or if he had a separate residence in Muse. Also the obituary does not explicitly state that his wife lived in Muse. Based on the way William's address is stated (a house number in a town, not a house number on a specific street), Muse seems to be a "coal mine village," where the mining company has built several cabins near a mine entrance, which are rented to employees. The obituary also suggests David had resided for a time in Kent, Ohio. As this is written (28 June 2020), no records have yet been located about a period of residence in Kent, Ohio (or in Portland, Oregon, which is mentioned on the 1918 World War I draft registration documentation of his son, William Charles Phillips.5,4

Notes and Observations:

The research on the family history of David Evan Philips and Johanna Ernestina Hecker (and their descendants) has been complicated by the family seeming to “shatter” following the death of Johanna Ernestina Hecker in August 1891 (probably in Sullivan County in Eastern Pennsylvania). The following table attempts to provide a brief summary of “what happened” to their children (to the limited extent that it is known in June 2020) by listing (1) their birth dates, (2) their ages at the time of their mother's death, and (3) their locations at the time of the 1900 census, and (4) providing certain additional information in the Comments column.

Her grandmother died 28 Dec 1901. She might have had some type of not-yet-located “ward” relationship for a time after her grandmother’s death, similar to her younger brother Arthur (see Comment below). At time of 1910 census, she lived in household of her then-married sister Jennie in German Township, Fayette County PA (using Philips as her surname on that census). She appears to have sometimes used Seeman as surname until her marriage in 1913. Two children reached adulthood.

Additional Comments on Above Table:

1. German Township is in Southwest Pennsylvania.

2. Jefferson County is in Western Pennsylvania, somewhat northeast of the Pittsburgh area, and almost due north of Fayette County.

3. The elder Ernestine (Seeman was her married surname after about 1875) is listed as (maternal) grandmother in this table. Some evidence suggests she might have been an adoptive parent to the younger Ernestina (Johanna Ernestina Hecker), not a biological parent. “Seeman” is the spelling of the surname used in the 1901 census and also the spelling that shows up in later records (after the grandmother’s death) relating to Lela and Arthur. However, the original “Germanic” spelling seems to have more likely been “Seemann”. The younger Ernestina apparently never used Seeman (or Seemann) as a surname, at least not in the few records that have been found for her.

4. Family folklore is that Lela Mae Philips was unable to get married until some type of financial obligation had been satisfied. This might be somehow connected with debts stemming from a ward-type relationship (similar to the relationships her two younger brothers had), if she was placed in a relationship of that type following the death of her grandmother in 1891.

5. There is a lot of variation in how “Philip” and “Philips” are spelled in various records. Sometimes one “L” used and other times two “L’s”are used in the names.

6. David E Philips had one known child (a daughter) by a later wife (not listed in the above table). She had one known child who reached adulthood.

Philip Edward Johnson was born in July 1886 at Pennsylvania.3,4

Philip Edward Johnson (listed as Phillip E Johnson) appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Nicholson Township (Voting Pricinct Number 1), of Fayette County, Pennsylvania in the household of his parents, David Martin Johnson and Frances (--?--). The official date of that census was 01 June 1900. He was listed as age 25, single, born in July 1886 in Pennsylvania. This census is unique (up to that time) in that month and year of birth were requested for each individual, in addition to age at the official census date. No occupation was listed for him. He attended school for 2 months the previous year. He was listed as able to read and write and speak English.3

Lela Mae Philips listed as "Lela Phillips Seeman" and also as "Lela (Phillips) Seeman: married Philip Edward Johnson, daughter of David Evan Philips and Johanna Ernestina Hecker, on 16 April 1912 at Masontown, Geman Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania.2,1

Philip Edward Johnson (listed as Edward Johnson) and Lela Mae Philips (listed as Lela Johnson) appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of German Township (Precinct #6), Fayette County, Pennsylvania, enumerated 27 January 1920. The official date of that census was 01 January 1920. The home was listed as rented and not on a farm. Philip Edward Johnson and Lela Mae Philips were both listed as age 33, both born in Pennsylvania, married to each other, and both able to read and write and to speak English. Philip’s occupation was listed as merchant with a grocery store (and an employer). No occupation was listed for Lela. Both of their fathers and mothers were listed as born in Pennsylvania. Their children, Irene Johnson and Pearl May Johnson (ages 5 and 11/12s), were listed as living with them. All of the members of the household age 10 and over were listed as being able to read and write. Neither child was listed as attending school after September 1, 1919.4

Philip Edward Johnson lived in July 1921 at Masontown, Fayette County, Pennsylvania.5 He lived in July 1921 at Masontown, German Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania.5

Philip Edward Johnson (listed as Edward Johnson) and Lela Mae Philips (listed as Lela Johnson) appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of German Township, Fayette County, Pennyslvania The official date of that census was 02 April 1930. The home was listed as owned, valued at $5500, and not on a farm. A radio was present in the home. Their ages were both listed as 43, both born in Pennsylvania, both married 19 years, both first married at age 25, both did not attend school the previous year, and both could read and write. Their fathers were listed as born in Pennsylvania and Wales, respectively. Both of their mothers were listed as born in Pennsylvania. Their children, Irene Johnson and David Edward Johnson (ages 15 and 7) were listed as living with them.. The older child (a daughter) was listed as being able to read and write. No indication was listed concerning the literacy of the younger child (a son). Quite likely the instructions to census takers was that this question was not applicable to children under age 10. Both children were listed as attending school after September 1, 1929.6

Philip Edward Johnson (listed as Edward Johnson) and Lela Mae Philips (listed as Lela Johnson) appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of German Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania at 140 Cedar Avenue, enumerated 9 April 1940. The home was listed as owned, valued at $4000, and not on a farm. The official date of that census was 01 April 1940. Their children, Irene Johnson and David Edward Johnson (ages 25 and 17), were listed as living with them, along with a grandson Thomas Kelly (age 4). Their adult daughter was originally listed in the handwritten filled-in form as Irene Kelly, with the surname Kelly later crossed out (but she was listed as married). All household members were listed having lived in the same house on 1 Apr 1935, 5 years previously, (which was stated to not be on a farm), although this was probably incorrect for the grandson, Thomas Kelly, since he was listed as only age 4.

Philip Edward Johnson and Lela Mae Philips were listed as ages 53 and 54, respectively, both not attending school in March 1940, and both having completed 8 years of schooling. Both were listed as born in Pennsylvania. Philip was listed as employed, not seeking work, and had worked 40 hours the week of 24-30 March. His occupation was listed as a plumber with his own shop working on his own account (self-employed). He worked 52 weeks in 1939, had no wage earnings, but had other income (other than wages and salary) in excess of $50 (presumably including profits from his business). Lela is listed as doing housework, not employed for wages, and not seeking such employment the week of 24-30 March. No 1939 wage income was reported for her and she did not have non-wage income in excess of $50 in 1939. The population schedule indicates that a farm schedule was not filed for this household.7

Ruth Adel Powers was born circa 1908 in Massachusetts.3

Ruth Adel Powers married Clifford Henry White circa 1927.

Ruth Adel Powers appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts at 6 Water Street, enumerated 23 April 1940, The home was listed as rented for $20 per month and not on a farm. The official date of that census was 01 April 1940. , Ruth was listed having lived in Redwood, Madera County, California on 1 Apr 1935. Ruth was listed as age 32, married, born in Massachusetts, not attending school in March 1940, and having completed 4 years of high school. Ruth was listed as not employed for wages, keeping house, and not seeking work the week of 24-30 March. No occupation was listed for her. She reported 0 weeks worked in 1939, no wage income, and other income (other than wages and salary) in excess of $50. The population schedule indicates a farm schedule was not filed for this household. It is possible her husband was not at home when the census enumerator visited because he was working on a ship (freighter). Boston seems to have at least two different Water Streets. The one of interest here is in the Neponset District of the city, near the south end of the city. It is a few blocks east of Garvey Park and a few blocks south of Tenean Beach (these are 2016 names for these landmarks; they may have had different names in 1940).. This appears to be the family of Clifford Henry White, even though his is not listed with them. The location of the family's residence, near a waterfront, suggests that he could have been in military service or working in the merchant marine at this time.4

Ruth Adel Powers and Clifford Henry White appeared on the 1945 Florida State Census of Lake Wales (Precinct 28), at Polk County, Florida. The residence was outside of Lake Wales. Their children Clifford Henry White Jr., Irene Vivian White, June Leona White, Donald Robert White, Lorraine Anita White, Thomas White, Luella White and Clinton White were listed as living with them. Clifford and Ruth were listed as ages 36 and 37, respectively, and born in Missouri and Massachusetts, respectively. He was listed as having a high school education and employed in the US Merchant Marine. She was listed a having a college education and employed as a cook.3

Ruth Adel Powers married Marvin Jewel Fields, son of Charles Anson Fields and Zona Collins.1
