Martha McGill1

Martha McGill was born circa 1825 at Pennsylvania.2

Martha McGill married David Johnson.2

David Johnson (listed as David Johnson) and Martha McGill (listed as Martha Johnson) appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of German Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, enumerated 20 July 1860. The official date of that census was 01 June 1860. David’s age was listed as 38. Martha’s age was listed as 35. They were both listed as born in Pennsylvania. His occupation was listed as Farmer. No occupation was listed for her. The household was listed as having real estate worth $10,000 and personal property worth $1100. Their children, John Johnson, Elizabeth Johnson, David Martin Johnson and Nancy Johnson (ages 8, 6, 5, and 2) were listed as living with them, as was Solomon Watson (age 14), whose role in the household is unknown. No one was listed as having been married within a year prior to the official census date. One child (John, age 8) was listed as attending school within the year prior to the official census date. Both adults in the household was listed as being able to read and write. No disabilities or other special situations were listed for anyone in the family.2

David Johnson (listed as David Johnson ) and Martha McGill (listed as Martha J Johnson) appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of German Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, enumerated 11 June 1880. The official date of that census was 01 June 1880. David’s age was listed as 58. Martha’s age was listed as 53. They were listed as having been born in Pennsylvania and as being husband and wife. Their occupations were listed as Farmer and Keeping House, respectively. He was listed as able to read and write. She was listed as able to read but unable to write. Neither was listed as attending school. David was listed as being “disabled or maimed”, with “Rheumatism” identified as the nature of his disability.

Their children, Elizabeth Johnson, David Martin Johnson, George W Johnson, Isaac M Johnson, William U Johnson, Jacob N Johnson, Mary F Johnson and Lorettie M Johnson (ages 25, 24, 20, 18, 17, 15, 13, and 8), were listed as living with them. The middle four (of the eight) children were listed as attending school. All of the children age 15 and over were listed as able to read and write. Mary F Johnson (age 13) was listed as “Idiotic” (mentally or intellectually handicapped in more modern terminology), not attending school, and as unable to read and write. Literacy information was apparently not officially tabulated for children age 8 and younger during this census. It is interesting that the occupation for all of the adult (and near-adult) children was listed only as “At Home.” One would expect that (in reality) at least some of the sons would be working be Farm Labor (or Farmers), especially given that David Johnson was at least partially disabled.3

The census schedule does not seem to indicate if the home was or was not mortgaged.3

William Philips (listed as William Phillips) and Maria (--?--) (listed as Maria Phillips) appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Township 21-8, Harding County, South Dakota at Ralph Precinct, enumerated 10 May 1910. The official date of that census was 15 April 1910. The home was listed as owned, not mortgaged, and on a farm (specifically on a cattle ranch). William Philips and Maria (--?--) were listed as ages 45 and 37, born in Pennsylvania and Vermont, respectively, both married for 22 years, both in first marriage, and both able to speak English. Both were listed as being able to read and write. William’s occupation was listed as Rancher on a cattle ranch (on his own account, self-employed). No occupation was listed for Maria. The columns where mothers were asked how many children they have given birth to and how many are still living are blank for Maria for this census (buth that information had been supplied in the previous census).

Their children, Albert T Philips and Alice E Philips (ages 21 and 11), were listed as living with them. The father and mother of both children were listed as born in Pennsylvania and Vermont, respectively, which is consistent, with their parents being William and Maria. The occupation of the older child (a son) is listed as Farmer on a homestead (and self-employed – on his “own account”). As a homesteader, one might expect to see him listed as a separate household. However, he many not yet have a residence constructed on his homesteaded land. The younger child is the only member of the household listed as attending school. No one in the household was listed as a veteran of the Union or Confederate Army or Navy. No severe vision, hearing, or speaking disabilities were listed.1

William Philips (listed as William Phillips) and Maria (--?--) (listed as Maria Phillips) appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Haley Township, Bowman County, North Dakota, enumerated 3 February 1920. The official date of that census was 01 January 1920. The home was listed as owned and on a farm (an agricultural census schedule was associated with this household). William Philips and Maria (--?--) were listed as ages 55 and 48, born in Pennsylvania and Vermont, respectively, both married, and both native English speakers. Both were listed as able to read and write. William’s occupation was listed as a Merchant in a general store (and as an employer). No occupation was listed for Maria. No one in the household was listed as attending school. His parents were both listed as born in Wales. Her parents were both listed as born in Vermont. Their children, Albert T Philips and Alice E Philips (ages 30 and 20) were listed as living with them.

All of the members of the household were listed as being able to read and write. No one in the household was listed as attending school after September 1, 1919. Their son, Albert L Phillips, was also listed as a Merchant in a general store (and as an employer), suggesting father and son may have been in a partnership together (a neighbor, Ransom L Park, appearing the same page of the census schedule, was also listed as a Merchant in a general store, and as an employer, – which may be just a coincidence). Although no one in the household listed farming or ranching as an occupation, an agricultural census schedule was submitted for this household, suggesting that more-than-trivial income (or income equivalency) was derived from farm and/or ranch activities. Note that they have moved from one Dakota to the other since the 1910 census was taken.4

John Ward Seeman (listed as J Ward Seeman) appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Binghamton, Broome County, New York in the household of his parents, Pearle (--?--) and an unknown person , at 485 Chenango Stret[ ], enumerated probably April 1930. He was listed as age 9, single, born in Pennsylvania, and attended school. Apparently children under age 10 were not asked if they could read and write.2

John Ward Seeman (listed as John Ward Seeman) appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Gilbertsville, Otsego County, New York in the household of his parents, Arthur D Philips, enumerated 3 April 1940. The official date of that census was 01 April 1940. He was listed as: age 19, single, attended school during March 1940, had completed three years of high school, born in Pennsylvania, lived in same house on 1 Apr 1935. He was a student, not employed and not seeking work the week of March 24-30 1940. No occupation was listed for him. In 1939 he is said to have worked 40 weeks, but had no wages, and did not have income in excess of $50 from sources other than wages or salary (it’s possible his employment was unsalaried, working in a family business – there is notation on the census form apparently indicating his brother, Lucas A Seeman, was a non-paid worker, but no such notation was made for John Ward Seeman).1

In 1966 John Ward Seeman lived in Endwell, Broome County, New York.3
