John Arthur Philips was born on 29 December 1884 at Lopez, Sullivan County, Pennsylvania.4,2,1

John Arthur Philips (listed as John A Phillips) appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of German Township, of Fayette County, Pennsylvania in the household of his father, David Evan Philips, enumerated 22 June 1900. The official date of that census was 01 June 1900. He was listed as age 15, single, born in December 1884 in Pennsylvania. This census is unique (up to that time) in that month and year of birth were requested for each individual, in addition to age at the official census date. His father and mother were listed as born in Pennsylvania. His occupation was listed as Day Laborer. He was listed as able to read and write and speak English.2

Brothers William Charles Phillips (listed as William Phillips) and John Arthur Philips (listed as John Phillips) appeared as “roomers” in the household of Regis L Debolt on the 1910 Federal Census of Uniontown (Ward 3), Fayette County, Pennsylvania, enumerated 16 April 1910. The official date of that census was 15 April 1910. The home was listed as owned, not mortgaged, and not on a farm. William Charles Phillips and John Arthur Philips were listed as ages 27 and 25, respectively, both born in Pennsylvania, both single, and both able to speak English. Both were listed as being able to read and write. The occupation for both William and John was listed as carpenter in the “home industry” probably meaning the home-building industry. Both were listed as not at work the week prior to the census, but both indicated zero weeks of unemployment during 1909. No severe vision, hearing, or speaking disabilities were listed. Neither of them attended school.

Others in the household included Debolt’s wife, two children, a grandson, a servant, one other roomer. One other household on this census schedule page indicated they rented a room to a lodger.5

John Arthur Philips appeared on the 1930 Federal Census as a lodger in the household of Sam Ellomei of Uniontown, Fayette County, Pennsylvania at 30 Downer Avenue, enumerated 9 April 1930. The official date of that census was 02 April 1930. John’s age was listed as 46, born in Pennsylvania, single, did not attend school the previous year, and could read and write. John’s occupation was listed as Carpenter, general work (paid employee), and employed.

The home was listed as owned (by Sam Ellomei), valued at $5000, and not on a farm. No radio was present in the home. Sam Ellomei’s occupation was listed as proprietor of a barber shop (self-employed). His age was listed as 40. Others in the household included his wife, two step-sons, and two other lodgers. At least two other households on this page of the census schedule included lodgers.6

John Arthur Philips appeared on the 1940 Federal Census listed as a roomer in the household of Earl E LaClaw of Uniontown, Fayette County, Pennsylvania at 51 Morgantown Street, enumerated 13 April 1940. The home was listed as rented (by Earl E LaClaw) for $20 per month, and not on a farm. The official date of that census was 01 April 1940. Both household members were listed having lived in the same house on 1 Apr 1935. John Arthur Philips was listed as age 58, not attending school in March 1940, having completed 5 years of schooling. John was listed as born in Pennsylvania. John was listed as employed, not seeking work, and had worked 40 hours the week of 24-30 March. His occupation was listed as a Carpenter for a lumber company. He worked 25 weeks in 1939, earned $900 in wages and had no other income (other than wages and salary) in excess of $50.

Earl E LaClaw (age 50), listed as a steward at the Eagles Club, was the only other member of the household. However, a separate one-person household is listed on this page of the census schedule at the same street address (that is, same house number). The two households seem to have resided in a structure containing two residences. Some later source documents have John listed at basically this same address, but his (later) house number is listed as 51 ½, not (just) 51. Thus, it is possible that the structure had at least two units with separate entrances. It is unclear which “unit” he was living in at the time of the 1940 census.7

On 27 April 1942 John Arthur Philips registered under the Selective Service (military draft) Act for World War II at Local Board #77 in the Grange Building at 5801 N. Broad Street, Philadelphia Pennsyvlania. He gave is date of birth as 20 Dec 1889 (in Sullivan County, Pennsylvania), his address as 51 1/2 Morgantown Street, Uniontown, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, and his employer was Charles C Jones, Winchell Ave, Uniontown PA. For the name and address of someone who would always know his address, he listed Jennie Philips (listed as Mrs C G Deffenbaugh) at 170 Coolspring St, Uniontown Pennsylvania.1

John Arthur Philips died on 23 December 1961 at Uniontown, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, at age 76. He was dead on arrival at Uniontown Hospital (on Berkeley Street) followng an acute coronary occlusion. His death certificate lists his mailing address at the time of his death as 51 1/2 Morgantown Street, Uniontown. His usual occupation was listed as Carpenter and his Social Security Number was 178 05 9313. His parents were listed as Ernestina Heckler (slighly differnent spelling of each name that on source documents for other family members) and David Phillips. The informant was Juanita Hawthorne (possibly a neice).4,3

John Arthur Philips was buried at Park Place Cemetery (Section 1), Uniontwon, Fayette County, Pennsylvania.3

The official date of that census was 01 June 1870. Christopher’s age was listed as 30. Catherine’s age was listed as 23. They were both listed as having been born in Pennsylvania, with neither of their parents listed as born in a foreign country. Their occupations were listed as Farmer and Keeping House, respectively. The household was listed as having real estate worth $1000 and personal property worth $490. Their children, Jennie Florence Deffenbaugh, Martha Elzoe Deffenbaugh, Rebecca E Deffenbaugh and William Deffenbaugh (ages 5, 4, 2, and 8/12ths), were listed as living with them. No one was listed as having been married within a year prior to the date official census date. The adults in the household were listed as being able to read and write. The household had no male citizens over the age of 21 whose right to vote was denied or abridged due to reason than rebellion.3

Christopher Deffenbaugh (listed as Christopher Deffenbaugh) and Catherine Johnson (listed as Catherine Deffenbaugh) appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of German Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, enumerated 7 June 1880. The official date of that census was 01 June 1870. Christopher’s age was listed as 41. Catherine’s age was listed as 34. They were both listed as having been born in Pennsylvania and as being husband and wife. Everyone in the household over age 10 was listed as being able to read and write. The fathers and mothers of Christopher and Catherine were listed as born in Pennsylvania. Their children, Jennie Florence Deffenbaugh, Martha Elzoe Deffenbaugh, Rebecca E Deffenbaugh, Plesy W Deffenbaugh and Essie O Deffenbaugh (ages 14, 13, 11, 8, and 3) were listed as living with them. The oldest daughter (Jennie M Deffenbaugh) was listed as having “organic heart disease”. The two oldest daughters were listed as attending school. Note that son William Deffenbaugh (who was age 8 months in the 1870 census) is not listed in the household. He may have died in the 1870-1880 time period.4

Christopher Deffenbaugh (listed as Christian Desfenbaugh) and Catherine Johnson (listed as Kate Desfenbaugh) appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of German Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, enumerated 11 June 1900. The official date of that census was 01 June 1900. Christopher’s age was listed as 60 (born March 1839). Catherine’s age was listed as 53 (born September 1846). This census is unique (up to that time) in that month and year of birth were requested for each individual, in addition to age at the official census date. They were both listed as born in Pennsylvania, as were all four of their parents. They were both listed as married for 35 years. His occupation was listed as Farmer. No occupation was listed for her. Their children, Chauncey George Deffenbaugh, Homer Christian Deffenbaugh and Zefta K Deffenbaugh (ages 19, 17, and 15), were listed as living with them). Christopher’s brother, George Deffenbaugh (age 68), was also listed as living in the household.

All members of the household were listed as being able to read, write, and speak English. The younger two children were listed as attending school. All three of the adult children living in the household are listed as farm laborers. Catherine Johnson was listed as the mother of ten children, with seven of them living as of the date of the census. The residence was listed as owned with no mortgage and on a farm. The handwriting on this census schedule page image is very faint. Some information given in this narrative for the household for this census is uncertain because of this – especially the birth month abd year.5

Catherine Johnson died on 14 October 1910 at German Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, at age 63.1 She was buried on 16 October 1910 at Mennonite Cemetery, German Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania. Her death certificate indicates death was due to pheumonia. She died at 3:30 PM, after being ill for about10 days. The "informant" is listed as "Family Record," which probably refers to the information as to her date of birth and parents. The certificate was filed on the date of her burial (2 days after her death), so there should have been no need to refer to records to determine the date and location of her death.1

No one was listed as having been married within a year prior to the official census date. One child (John, age 8) was listed as attending school within the year prior to the official census date. The middle four (of the eight) children were listed as attending school. All of the children age 15 and over were listed as able to read and write. Mary F Johnson (age 13) was listed as “Idiotic” (mentally or intellectually handicapped in more modern terminology), not attending school, and as unable to read and write. Literacy information was apparently not officially tabulated for children age 8 and younger during this census. It is interesting that the occupation for all of the adult (and near-adult) children was listed only as “At Home.” One would expect that (in reality) at least some of the sons would be working be Farm Labor (or Farmers), especially given that David Johnson was at least partially disabled.3

Leon Philips was listed as age 28, born in Pennsylvania, single, a native English speaker, and able to read and write. Leon’s occupation was listed as a Civil Engineer in a coal mine (and as a paid worker). Both of his parents appear to be listed as born in Pennsylvania (this section of the schedule did not copy well and is difficult to read)

Phoebe A (--?--)’s occupation was listed as the Keeper of a boarding house (self-employed). Other members of the Phoebe A (--?--) household included a daughter (age 15), a grandson (age 9), and two other male boarders (both in their 50s). Both children were listed as attending school after September 1, 1929.8
