Daniel Williams (listed as Daniel Williams) appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Siem Precinct, Butte County, South Dakota in the household of his brother, William Philips, and sister-in-law, Maria (--?--). The official date of that census was 01 June 1900. He was listed as age 34, single, born in May 1866 in Pennsylvania. This census is unique (up to that time) in that month and year of birth were requested for each individual, in addition to age at the official census date. His occupation was listed as a Quartz Miner (with four months of unemployment during the previous year). He was listed as able to read and write and speak English. His father and mother were listed as born in Wales.1

Thomas Williams1

Mother | Mary (--?--)2 |
Another of the (several) mysteries associated with David Evan Philips concerns his brothers. In addition to (at least) one full brother, William Philips (born c1865), he had a (half?) brother named Daniel Williams, mentioned in one source document that has been located thus far (as of 28 June 2020). Curiously, Daniel seems to be between David and William in birth order. A second Williams-surnamed brother (this one explicitly identified as a half brother), Thomas Williams (birth year unknown), also appears in a single as-yet-located source document. It is not impossible that Daniel Williams and Thomas Williams might some day be determined to be the same person (perhaps he was sometimes known by a first name and other times known by a middle name). The sketchy information concerning the connections between David Evan Philips and the Williams brother (or brothers) suggests the possibility of some type of informal adoption, something that seems to be unusually common in this family. Additional research on these family relationships would be useful.
For now (as this is written in late June 2020), "both" half-brothers (assuming they are, indeed, two distinct individuals) have been arbitrarily assumed to be related to the two known "full" bothers (David Evan Philips and William Philips) by only their mother.2,1
