5 Nov 2013 (Tuesday) – Uluru Australia (Ayres Rock)
Beginning of trip from Sydney to Uluru (Ayres Rock). This was the day of the Melborune Cup, a horse race (and a BIG deal in Australia -- and probably New Zealand too). These comedy actors were doing some kind of promotion at the airport that was tied to the race. (IMG_4951.A495.JPG)

From the airplane. Not a great photo. This was taken after we flew past the Blue Mountians, flying westward. The area here was desert. However what could be seen on the ground (and what I was trying to show in this photo) is that the ground was laced with dry channels. This indicated that there were heavy rains in the area at times. Later, as we got closer to Ayres Rock, there were no channels like this.(IMG_4953.A495.JPG)

Sign in the airport in Uluru. Saw a dingo in the Blue Mountains (and also one in captivity at Featherdale), but not any in Uluru. Couldn't get a good photo of the one in the Blue Mountains because of shrubery in front of it (and it blended in REALLY well). Couldn't get a good photo of the one in Featherdale because it was constantly moving (and seemed to try to follow a path so there was stuff between it and the people in the viewing area, as much as possible). 6 Nov 2013 (Wednesday) – Uluru Australia (Ayres Rock)
This is the next day -- at the base of the rock. First three photos are signs.
Note that this sign does not show the trail on (up) the rock itself. They seem to do everything they can to discourage people from climbing the rock without actually prohibiting it (but they may prohibit hiking ON the rock within a few years -- more on that in the written trip log). The entry point to the climbing trail is at the group of 5 symbols on the left side of the rock on the map (below the "You Are Here"). (IMG_4999.A495.JPG)

6 Nov 2013 (Wednesday) – Uluru Australia (Ayres Rock)
On this day, climbing (hiking to the top of the rock) was prohibited due to heat. It WAS hot that day (I believe it actually got to 40 C that day, which is about 104 F). However, my impression is that they close the trial to the summit on just about any excuse that can find -- part of the general discourgement for being on the rock.(IMG_5016.A495.JPG)

The vertical dark streak is a place water runs off during rains. There are apparently some depressions on the top where water collects duriing rains (and fish live in them). However, it's a ROCK, so, during rains, almost no water can soak in. It almost all runs off (at grooves and natural channels on the rock surface) at essentially the same rate it falls on the rock. This was a pretty odd sign in the middle of a VERY dry desert. However, this is apparently a place at the base of the rock where runoff water can collect and then stand for a few days after heavy rains. Then it evaporates and/or soaks into the soil. (IMG_5009.A495.JPG)
