This is the first of several photos taken inside the Australia Museum in Sydney. This is a reconstruction of a diprotodon, sometimes called the giant wombat. They are now extinct but were still around when the first prehistoric settlements were made in Australia. Humans and this guy (and other large animals that are now extinct) probably coexisted for several thousand years there. Hard to see how big this is from this photo, but it's as large as a typical polar bear (but perhaps not as large as the largest polar bears)
The museum mostly covers natural history. The collection did not seem to me to be as extensive as the name and the size of the buillding would suggest. However, Sydney is not the capital of the country (it IS the capital of the state of New South Wales). I suspect the REAL national museums are located there. (IMG_4444.SX40.JPG)

This is a mounted (stuffed) Bowerbird. They are noted for the sophisticated "nests" (bowers) the male builds to attract a female. What I hadn't realized was that they have almost perfect Pittsburgh Steeler colors (this one does anyhow -- I believe there are several different kinds in Australia, each with its own style of bower, and perhaps different colors). Description on base of another stature (next photo). Flinders is holding a navigation instrument (probably a sextant) in the staute. Unfortunately the statue is placed and located such that it is difficult to get a good photgraph of it (at least that's the case for a photographer of my ability). This statue is located outside the State Library of New South Wales, which is the building in the background.
The several photos after the next one are of a nearby life-size staute of Trim, his cat (which is located and placed so that it is more photogenic). There's more about Flinders and Trim in the trip journal or log. Learning about Flinders and Trim on this trip was one of several things that made me really feel humble about knowing so little about Australia's culture and history. (IMG_4473.SX40B.JPG)

Yet another overlook. These are the Three Sisters (a "famous" rock formation, which, I've read, was not really all THAT "famous" until they starting getting a few tourists into the Blue Mountains and then began looking around for more and more things the tourists could "visit").
This photo is taken not taken from the main viewing area, but rather from the opposite side of the formation. Thus it looks a bit different from most other photos of the formation. What can be seen here (and perhaps not from the "normal" viewing area) is the quite impressive cliff below the Three Sisters.

This photo is out of sequence. It is the first (in this album) of about 14 taken at the Featherdale Wildlife Center. I put this photo first because it contains a partial view of a sign giving the name. The remainder of the photos in this album were taken at Featherdale.
Featherdale is a privately owned place that is basically a tourist trap petting zoo. However, it has apparently been around so long that it's a Sydney-area institution. It reminded me of Kennywood in Pittsburgh, in that apparently every child who has grown up in Sydney has been to Featherdale (probably several times -- some of them on school field trips).
