Lots of images taken at the zoo follow. In several cases, photos are shown out of sequence. Some animals were in more than one area (for example, we were on a "backstage tour," which included visitng animals of some species in the zoo's "backstage" area -- these were in addition to the animals of the same species on public display.
Generally, animals of a specific type are groupled together.

Several places in the zoo have tremendous views of the downtown skyline on the other side of the harbor. This is a giraffe, of course (close up view in the next photo).
I was a the zoo primarily to see animals that are native to Australia. However, thinking about it, their major mission is to serve people who live in Australia. I guess they need a collection of non-Austrailan animals for that part of their mission. (IMG_4829.A495.JPG)

I believe this is a quokka, This is primarily based on comparing photos with those in a guidebook, Wiildlife of Australia" by Campbell and Woods (Pocket Guides, 2013, Princeton University Press). I'd sort of remembered it as being called a quoll. However, according to the photos in the book, the quoll has a longer snout (next photo is of this same animal). Australia has several interesting animals. In a way, it's kind of a shame that koalas, kangaroos, and Tasmanian devils have gotten all the publicity.

Possibly a possum sleeping inside a hollow tree. Whatever it is, is nocturnal, but many (probably most) native animals in Australia are.

Bilby. This is (to my thinking) the coolest Australian animals, but, sadly, probably the least photogenic. This photo was taken indoors -- in an area with subdued light -- with no flash (they are nocturnal). It's one of several photos I took, all like this, or worse. The next image here is this same photo, but I tried to do stuff to improve it with the digital photo editor (with limited sucess, if any).
After the trip, I looked on the web for other photos. The ones I found were better than these, but still don't do them justice.
People on the backstage tour got to feed this guy. He eats LIVE mealworms.

These are called Little Penguins and/or maybe Fairy Penguins (I think that's 2 names for the same thing, but I'm not sure). These are native to Australia (and New Zealand too). They are endangered. The guys here are in some kind of breeding program and most will be released into the wild eventually.
They had several kinds of penguins on exhibit, including some great underwater viewing windows. Under water, however, they move so quickly that I couldn't photograph them (even with video). (IMG_4850.A495A.JPG)

Leaving the botanical gardens walked past the back side of the opera house. More steps. Apparently in the past this area has been used as sort of an outdoor ampitheater (with seating on the steps). There is construction going on there now (the construction area and office trailers were behind me when I took this photo). It's possible they will no longer be able to use it for performances when the construction project is finished. I forget exactly what they are changing or adding. (IMG_4918.A495.JPG)

There are some exhibits on landings as one goes up the steps inside the pylon. The following one contains a photograph showing the area where the opera house is now (it's in the area shown at the lower right in the next photo). I think the building on that site when this photo was made was a municipal bus garage (or something like that). This is the first of several photos taken from the observation area on top of the bridge pylon. Some show the steel frame of the bridge with "climbers" on it. I passed on the climb.
