This is the Auckland Sky Tower (or something like that). This photo is out of sequence. It is shown here because several photos that follow this one (after the next photo) were taken from the top of this tower. This is in downtown Auckland.
People can sort of bunge-jump/skydive from the top of this tower. It's not a free fall. They are attached to a cable system that seems to provide a constant (semi-terminal) drop rate, but it looked pretty fast. The also cable has some kind of damping system that ensures a soft landing. The cables shown in this photo are part of that system. There are also guide cables that prevent the jumper from striking the side of the tower structure on the way down. The jump feature was not used much. Only one person jumped while I was watching and I was messing with the camera, trying to get it on video. I didn't look closely at the process.

Auckland is major historic volacanic area. The island on the horizon was produced by the most recent volcanic eruption, around the year 1500, a time when the island was inhabited by Polynesians. They did not have a written record, but some artwork that still exists and legends that have come down to the present day that appear to refer to this eruption.(IMG_5050.A495.JPG)

This is the first of several photos taken inside the Auckland Museum. A primary aspect of the Moari (Polynesian) culture in New Zealand seemed to be intricate wood carvings. The musuem had carved boats and buildings -- along with a lot of what I'd call totems, such as this one. Next photo is a close up of a portion of this totem.
All but a few of the carved objects in the were done after the Moari culture encountered Europeans. After that encounter, metal carving tools were available. Prior to that, the Moari had carved these figures with edged stone carving tools. The museum had a few older items carved with stone tools. The older objects were slightly less intricate than those carved with metal tools -- but only slightly so. (IMG_4670.SX40.JPG)

Bow or prow of the war canoe. Apparently little is reliably known about the ocean-going canoes that the polynesians used to go between groups of islands -- voyages of perhaps hundreds of miles, or more,but they may have been somewhat more robust than these war canoes. A kiwi, the NZ national symbol. This is a stuffed (mounted) one.
They are not extinct, but perhaps soon will be. Heard that most New Zealanders have never seen one in the wild. This is partly because they are now rare and partly because they are nocturnal.
