Esta Barton1,2

F, b. July 1869
Her maiden name was recorded as Esta Barba on her death certificate.3 Esta Barton first name was also spelled as Estha on some documents.4 She was born in July 1869 in Missouri. At least one source gives the place of her of birth as Ohio.4,3,5

Esta Barton married Steve Lawrence Miczanko, son of John Miczanko and Emma Bodnor, circa 1887.3

Esta Barton and Steve Lawrence Miczanko appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of West Port Township, Jackson County, Missouri, enumerated 18 June 1900. The home was owned with no mortgage and was not on a farm. An agricultural census schedule was not filed for this household. The official date of that census was 01 June 1900. This census is unique in that month and year of birth were requested for each individual, in additon to age at the official census date. Their children George W Miczanko, Gladys Miczanko and Edward L Miczanko were listed as living with them. Steve Lawrence Miczanko was listed as age 36 born in Austria, married 13 years, and employed as a fireman (brick kiln, this is presumably someone who provides fuel and/or controls temperature in a kiln, not someone who puts out accidental fires). He was listed as having immigrated to the US in 1881, lived in US 19 years, and was a naturalized citizen. Esta Barton was listed as age 30, born in Ohio, and married 13 years. She reported giving birth to 3 children, all of whom were still living. All members of the household age 10 and over could read, write, and speak English. The family surname was spelled Miczanks for this census.5

Esta Barton and Steve Lawrence Miczanko appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Denver, Denver County, Colorado at 4250 Tejone Street, enumerated 18 April 1910. The home was listed as owned and was mortgaged. It was not on a farm. The official date of that census was 15 April 1910. Their children Gladys Miczanko, Edward L Miczanko, Alfa E Miczanko, James S Miczanko and Baby Miczanko were listed as living with them, Steve Lawrence Miczanko and Esta Barton were listed as ages 46 and 40, respectively, born in Hungary (Slovak) and Ohio, respectively, both married for 22 years, both in first marriage, and both able to read, write, and speak English. Steve was listed as being employed as a burner at a tile company (a worker, not self-employed). He was employed on the date of the census and reported zero weeks of unemployment during 1909. He was reported as having immigrated to the US in 1882 and being a naturalized citizen. No occupation was listed for Esta. She was reported to have given birth to seven children, six of whom were still living. All of the members of the household age 8 and over were reported as being able to read, write, and speak English.6

Esta Barton and Steve Lawrence Miczanko appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Denver, Denver County, Colorado at 1107 17th Street, enumerated 6 January 1920 The ages of Steve and Esta were listed as 62 and 56, respectively, born in Hungaria (Magyar) and Ohio, respectively, both did not attend school the previous year, and both could read and write. The home was listed as rented and not on a farm.. The official date of that census was 01 January 1920. Their daughter Ruth C Miczanko was listed as living with them. Steve's occupation was listed burner, clay, working in a factory. Esta's was listed as being the proprietor of a barber shop (working on her own account). Three of this couple's adult children were listed in the 1920 census as residing in Houston, Texas in the household of Fielding Harvey Chelf (Mrs Fielding Harvey Chelf was the Miczanko's adult daughter, Gladys Miczanko). The census information for those three adult children was recorded in the applicable census schedule for Chelf's Texas residence, not in the schedule for their parent's Denver residence.7

Estha Barton appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Houston, Harris County, Texas in the household of Felding Harvey Chelf and Gladys Miczanko, at 617 Arlington. She was listed as age 60, married, born in Ohio, not attending school and able to read and write. She was listed as the self-employed proprieter of a barber shop.4

Esta Barton and Steve Lawrence Miczanko appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Denver, Denver County, Colorado at 4250 Tejon Street, enumerated 11 April 1940. The home was listed as owned, valued at $2500, and not on a farm. The home was listed as valued at $2500 and owned with no mortgage. It was not on a farm. The official date of that census was 01 April 1940. Steve Lawrence Miczanko and Esta Barton were listed having lived in the same "place" (same city, not necessarily the exact some dwelling) on 1 Apr 1935. They were listed as ages 76 and 70, respectively, both married, not attending school in March 1940, and having completed 8 years of schooling. He was listed as born in Austria and being a naturalized US citizen. Steve and Esta were both listed as not working or seeking work, both with zero hours of work the week of 24-30 March, zero weeks of unemployment immediately prior to 1 April 1940. He was listed as unable to work, while she was listed as doing housework. Both reported no occupation and no weeks worked (or wage income) during 1939. He reported non-wage income in excess of $50. She did not. Two lodgers, James B Furgeson (age 27) and his wife, Anna M (--?--) (age 30, listed as Anna M Furgeson), were listed as living with them. This appears to be the same address where the family lived at the time of the 1910 census, thiry years earlier (although they had lived at other locations at the time of the intervening censuses). This suggests the property at this address might have been owned continously during the entire thirty year period (and possibly rented to others) at times between 1910 and 1940.8

Esta Barton also appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of at Pueblo, at Pueblo County, Colorado, enumerated 20 April 1940. She was listed as an inmate (which is census terminology for a resident or patient in an institution and does not necessarily imply any type of involuntary committment). No information was listed about the nature of the "home" (i.e, no rental or ownership information). The form has the word "Francisco" in the location that would normally contain the name of a street. However, no street number is listed. The official date of that census was 01 April 1940. Esta Barton was listed having lived in Denver Colorado on 1 Apr 1935. She was listed as age 70, married, not attending school in March 1940, having completed 4 years of schooling, and born in Ohio. No information was provided concerning employment, occupation, or income.9

George W Chelf appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Magnolia Precinct, Larue County, Kentucky in the household of his parents, Elza C Chelf and Mary Elizabeth Clopton. He was reported as age 10, born in Kentucky, single, and attended school for 5 months the previous year.2

George W Chelf and Felding Harvey Chelf, who were brothers, appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Denver, Denver County, Colorado at 2115 Curtis Street, enumerated 21 April 1910. They were listed as roomers in the household of David M Whitney. The home was owned (by Whitney) and was mortgaged. The official date of that census was 15 April 1910. Felding Harvey Chelf and George W Chelf were listed as ages 24 and 19, respectively, born in Kentucky, both single, and both able to read, write, and speak English. Felding Harvey Chelf was listed as being employed as a barber (and a worker, not self-employed). He was employed on the date of the census and reported 16 weeks of unemployment during 1909. George W Chelf's occupation was listed as a farmer (and in the "out" industry -- possibly meaning he was normally employed "out," away from his residence?). He was not employed on the date of the census and reported 9 weeks of unemployment during 1909. Others listed in the household (in addition to the head of household, Whitney) are Caroline C (--?--), Myrtle E Nokes, Estella (--?--), Jennie G (--?--), William X Moxon, Edward Anderson, Arthur Anderson, Marie E Fay, Herman J Gabrielson, Allie W Giles, Mary K Bottorff and James J Meighen. All of the members of the household appear to have been able to read and write. Several of the above-listed people are roomers, similar to the Chelf brothers. Some relationships (to the head of household) listed on the census form are difficult to read because some type of notation has been written in this column, over the relationship. The notation seems to be used for adult women who have had children, but who are not married to the head of household.1

Steve Lawrence Miczanko's first name was also sometimes listed as Stephen after he entered the United States.3 Steve Lawrence Miczanko was also known as Steve Zanko.4 He was born on 19 August 1863 in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Several different locations for his place of birth appear in various documents, all of them related to Austria and/or Hungary. He was born prior to the official formation of the Austro-Hungarian Empire (in 1867), but Austro-Hungarian was the designation used when he entered the US, and for several decades thereafter, when records were created in the US. It is unclear (as this is written in August 2015) which nation-state the city or village of his birth was in after 1918, when boundaries in that region were changed. It is also unclear what nation-state the location is in August 2015.5,3,6,2,1

Steve Lawrence Miczanko's immigration was recorded at having occurred in several different years in various federal censuses: 1881 (in the 1900 census), 1882 (in the 1910 census), 1885 (in the 1920 census), and (apparently) 1895 (in the 1930 census). The date of entry to the US was not among the questions asked in the 1940 census. As this is written (April 2015) the "closest match" to him that has been located in US immigration records is a Stephan Muczuka, who entered the US at New York on 26 December 1885. He had traveled from Bremen on board the SS Main as a steerage passenger (Steerage Hold C). His age was listed as 24 (which would put his year of birth around 1861). He was listed as being from Hungary -- and was a Hungarian citizen (but no location within Hungary is listed). He had no baggage (a question which might refer to something like "checked baggage") and intended an "extended sojurn" in the United States. His occupation was listed as worker. No family members seem to have been traveling with him.

New York entries in 1885 were at Castle Garden, which was run by the state of New York (or possibly by the city; this was before the federal government began controlling entry to the US and before the Ellis Island facility began operations around 1892). The information recorded about each immigrant was less detailed in 1885 that it was in years after 1892. The facility known as Castle Garden through much of the 1800s has now (2017) had an even earlier name (Castle Clinton) restored to it.7

The census information for those three adult children was recorded in the applicable census schedule for Chelf's Texas residence, not in the schedule for their parent's Denver residence.9

Steve Lawrence Miczanko appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Denver, Denver County, Colorado at 515 Marion, enumerated 12 April 1930. His age was listed as 67, born in Austria (native language was listed as German!), age at first marriage was 22, did not attend school the previous year, and could read and write. The home was listed as rented for $22 per month, and not on a farm. A radio was not listed as being present in the home (only two radios appear for the approximately 22 households listed on the page). The official date of that census was 02 April 1930. Steve was listed as employed as a clay burner in the clay industry as a worker (not self-employed). He is listed as having entered the US in 1885 and his citizenship status is listed as having completed his "first papers". The census schedule line for him indicates he was not a military veteran.10

Steve Lawrence Miczanko and Esta Barton appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Denver, Denver County, Colorado at 4250 Tejon Street, enumerated 11 April 1940. Steve Lawrence Miczanko died on 17 April 1942 at Methodist Hospital, Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California, at age 78. He died from effects of a fracture of his right hip caused by a fall to the floor in his home. The accident occurred on 15 April 1942. He had surgery following the fall.5,3,2 He was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Glendale, Los Angeles County, California. The specific plot he is buried in is Graceland: Lot 3419-2. His death certificate indicates his usual occupation was brick burner in a brick factory. His usual address was listed as 1311 West 82nd Street, Los Angeles, California. This same address is listed for his son, James S. Miczanko, who was the informant for information on the death certificate. Steve's wife was apparently still living at the time of his death. The death certificate contained information about his father, but his mother's maiden name and birthplace were listed as unknown. An autopsy was performed. The autopsy observed he suffered from generalized arteriosclerosis. There may be several cemeteries in the Los Angeles area with similar names. He is buried in the one in Glendale.5,2
