Peru -- Primarily Machu Picchu (Dec 2010)

More of those stone "tie bars," but these seem to have some different function. They are lower from the roof line than the others and seem to project out further. Also, they are not on the roof gable like the others. Finally, they seem to be on the inside of the building, while the others are on the outside.

I believe all the things that seem to be "windows" here are actually small alcoves (similar to the one in the background). Perhaps a wooden shelf of some kind (or possibly a loft) rested on the cylindrical stones projecting out from the wall.
