Peru -- Primarily Machu Picchu (Dec 2010)

Aguas Calentes is the small town at the base of the road to Machu Picchu. The train trip is something like 114 km, and they provide a printed "program" describing sights on each section of the road.

These windows are up near the roofline and in the roof of the rail car.

I was (and still am) confused by this trip. The year we went there seemed to be three classes of service, with the top level called something like the Vista Trail. We took the middle of the tree levels. Because we were not on the "vista" train, I wasn't expecting to be a car which had these windows that allowed passengers to look upward toward the mountain peaks (the train goes thru steep-walled narrow valleys for much of its route). However, we were in that car. I think the top class of service may have included a hot meal and entertainment in the cars during the trip.
