Oldupai Gorge

This is the area where some important discoveries have been made involving early human ancestors. There is a modest museum on the rim of the gorge.

The name is more commonly spelled as Olduvai (a "v" instead of a "p") outside of East Africa. Apparently the first academic publications were in German when Tanzania was a German colony. That initial publicaton used the "v" spelling, and it has tended to stick. The "p" spelling is probably closer to the original name in Swahili.

Interior of the museum.

The sloped exhibit is a replica (made from a casting) of a set of humanoid tracks made in a layer of volcanic ash (which apparenlty later hardened into a rocklike material. The actual prints are perhaps 40 miles away (and have now been re-covered by protective layers of soil and and rock (and perhaps some materials to reduce rainwater infiltration and damage from tree roots).

The musum "covers" items found in the general area, not just from down in this particular gorge.

Monument is at right. This shows the area around it. This "cove" has been dug out by their excavations.

It's desert-like and the gorge has steep walls. Apparently during their wet season, there are torrential rains, which causes soil erosion. This is what exposed fossils, which told them where to dig for more fossils.

While we were down in the gorge, listening to a talk by the museum director, I looked down an saw a rock with a bit of fossil bone embedded in it. The fossil is at the top left edge of the rock, with the linear features that run roughly "northwest to southeast". The rock is about the size of a set of brass knuckles.

I'm guessing the fossil is a rib bone from a deer-like creature.

After leaving the park entrance complex, we drove for probably more than 1.5 hours without the roof up (and with only a few brief stops to look at interesting animals and birds). There were relatively few animals in that (probably) southeast section of the park this time of year. Then, we put top up and did a slower game drive for probably the last 20-25 miles into the lodge.

I'm not sure which of the next several photos was taken in which part of that drive between the park entrance and the lodge.

The jeeps are more people looking at the chetahs. I was probably more interested in the clouds here. We got some pretty good (but biref) rains later that night. Clouds

Serengeti National Park. Still at the chetah site.

I may have already written this someplace, but (if so) I'll write it again here. (I had a bit of a computer glitch -- a user glitch really -- while adding these descriptions and had to type some of them in twice. I may repeat myself in some spots because of that glitch.)

The clouds over the almost-flat plains were fascinating to me. I tried to get a photo of the effect I was seeing, Turned out, that effect did not come out well in photos (which surprised me). This is one of the better ones.

What we are looking at here is a series of clouds, with the more distant clouds closer and closer to the horizon with distance. Lookiing at these, I could almost "see" the bottom surface of the clouds forming a dome. Thus it seemed, I was seeing the curature of the earth -- but in the form of the curved lower surface of the bank of clouds. I'm guessing the lower surfaces of all of those clouds were about the same elevation above the ground, and the ground elevation was pretty constant.

Of course, I was looking at this with the background of someone who "knows" (has been taught) the earth is a sphere. I'm not sure I would have really "seen" that curved-earth-surface effect (impressed on the cloud layer) if did not have the advance knowledge the earth was spherical.

This photo (along with the next three) shows vultures who were waiting for the lions to eat that hippo. They they would get leftovers.

Later: I'll keep the caption, but after looking at these closely, as I was going thru the photos a second (or third!) time, adding animal IDs, it looks like there was a mixture of vultures and storks in the area. The ones with the longer bills (like the one in this photo) are storks, probably open-billed storks. The other are probably Lappet-faced vultures

This guy is really a stork. It was in the group with the vultures (and other cranes), near the dead hippo the lions were apparently waiting to start eating. This is probably a Marabou Stork. The same kind of stork is also in the tree in the preceeding photos.

Saw several (actually probably several dozen) of these storks a day or so later at a fishing village on the shore of Lake Victoria. I somehow edited out all of the photos of storks taken at the lake, so this one will have to do double duty.

There were weaver bird nests on small trees just off that entranceway.

The hollow cylinder that seems to hang downward is apparently the entrance to the nest. One bird book suggested there were perhaps 20 different varieties of weaver birds in East Africa. I suspect there are almost as many types of nests.

Guest rooms were in these "huts". There were two guest rooms on the lower level of each hut and one up "inside" the dome. These are a bit like the hotel at Lake Maynara, but the thatched roofs were more dome-like. They were more conical at the other lodge.

View of main building from the grounds (probably taken while I was standing near one of the guest "huts"). The dark areas are like porches where covered tables were located (but no wall on one side -- open to the outside). That's probably the bar area on the right and the dining area on the left.

This was in the diring area, which was a combination inside/outside area (with the "outside" part covered by a roof, but open on one side).

I don't recall any insect issues in these semi-open-air dining areas.

Taken sitting on the room balcony. There were no fences around the lodges in Tanzania to keep animals from coming VERY close to the guest areas.

At this lodge (and at the tent camp, where we stayed the two following nights), they wanted people to get security escorts when going between the guest area and the main building after dark. The security escorts were armed with flashlights.
