Into the Crater

Ngorongoro Crater.

The first three photos in this album were taken around when we first arrived at the floor of the crater (some perhaps even while we were still on the way down)> It had been very foggy up on the rim when we first got up. I had feared the fog would be even more dense down on the crater floor. However, it turned out to be just the opposite. We had been "up on the clouds" on the rim.

In these first three photos (and in some others) the bottom surface of the "fog layer" (or "cloud layer") is visible partway up the crater wall. The fog cleared throughout our time on the crater floor.

This was the longest single game run of the trip in terms of elapsed time. We were probably inside the crater for close to 5 hours, and it was probably around 6.5 to 7 hours from entering the jeeps at the lodge until the return to the lodge.

Male Lions

Ngorongoro Crater.

The next several photos are primarily concerned with a group of male lions (only one of whom seems to be visible in this photo). I believe there were four male lions in all, but it seems the largest number that show up in any one photo is three.

It's apparently unusual to see groups of males with no females around. This could be a group of young males that had recently been expelled from the pride they were born in (and grew up in). If that is the case, they would be looking for an established pride (like a harem) they could take over (replacing and expelling the older males in that pride). I assume the attempt at taking over an established pride is pretty much a do or die thing.

Elephant Family

Note the larger one in the background seems to have the same type of gland secretion that was observed earlier in the other part. This one seems to be mixed in with a family. I thought only the bulls did this secretion thing. Perhaps my "understanding" (such as it is) on that is incorrect. Or perhaps this is a young bull who has not yet left the family, or an older one who is near the family, either by chance or for breeding.

As you can probably imagine, if there are this many elephants and they eat 15-16 hours per day, they pretty much destroy a lot of trees during a year. I suspect they seldom really kill a tree. However, they need a lot of room. I suspect it would be many months before thus tree recovered so that the elephant could come back to eat this same tree again.

Gazelles

Ngorongoro Crater.

I believe these are Grant's Gazelles (as is the one in the preceding photo). They have white fur higher up on their rear ends than the also-common Thompson's Gazelles, which we also saw a lot of. I understand there are several existing species of gazelles. However, Thomspson's and Grant's were the only two pointed out to us on this trip. If there were others, I missed them.

Not sure if I mentioned in a prevous description how the stripes on their sides seemed to show up on only a few of them. I wasn't sure if that was a real color difference among them, or if it depended on viewing angle and the lighting comditions.

Picnic Breakfast at the Hippo Pool

Ngorongoro Crater.

We left the lodge before breakfast was served. In place of that, we had sort of a "box breakfast" buffet in the jeeps. It was set out on picnic blankets near the hippo pool (another place in the crater we could leave the vehicles -- there were rest rooms there too).

I believe this photo is level. The shape of the far shoreline makes it SEEM to be a bit tilted.

The next several photos were taken at that breakfast stop.

And, just to be clear, it was the TOURISTS who were having breakfast here (even though it seems I didn't actually include any photos of people eating).

Weaver Bird

I'm pretty sure this is a weaver bird of some type. A bird book indicates there are perhaps 20 different kinds (although I suspect that's in all of Africa -- there may be fewer types commonly seen in Kenya and Tanzania). Some seen at other locations were much closer to Pittsburgh Steeler colors that this one.

These weaver bird photos were all at the breakfast stop.

Hippo Grazing

This is some distance from the "breakfast" hippo pool. This guy out grazing probably came from a different pool. The water in the background is the largest lake in the crater (in terms of surface ares). My memory is that we were told it is salty. I'm not sure if that prevents the hippo from using it.

The white birds in the lake are flamingoes. I apparently did not get a good photo of them.

Lake at distance, with birds. Apparently the distance overwhelmed the power of my zoom lens here. Note the amount of exposed lakebed surface. We were there neat the end of their dry season. Safari Tourists

Ngorongoro Crater.

This was a group of safari jeeps photographed from a distance (and shown here out of sequence). They are clearly looking at something. I suspect they were looking at the group of lions, who are shown in the following several photos. However, they might have been looking at something else, such as the two rhinos.

Note the road in the background. I'm pretty sure that is the two-way road we later took to leave the crater. It is about 180 degrees around from the one-way-downward road (near the lodge) we used to enter the crater. We had to spend close to an hour on a very rugged rim road to get back to the lodge.

There is a one-way-upward road that comes out near the lodge. However, it was closed for repairs (or perhaps a rebuild).

The dark area at the left center of this photo appears to be a cloud shadow. However, there was also an area in this part of the crater that had been blackened by a grass fire.

Looking Across the Crater

Ngorongoro Crater.

Looking back across the crater from the "lions in the road" stop. The horizontal dark "line" just below the center of the photo is herds of wildebeests and zebras. It's quite possible the lodge is somewhere up on the crater rim shown here, if I knew where to look for it.

Trees

Ngorongoro Crater.

This is on the way out of the crater. I think these trees are called sisal. If that's what they are, this is a type of tree used for making rope -- including the rough rope used on cat scratching posts.

Crater Floor Views From Rim

Ngorongoro Crater.

I believe all of the next several photos were taken after we got back to the lodge. The previous day, we arrived at the lodge late on a rainy afternoon. This was the first time we had seen the crater floor from here in sunlight (well, partial sunlight-- there are many cloud shadows on the crater floor).

Lake in Crater

Ngorongoro Crater.

The largest "lake" (at the low point of the crater, I imagine). The white are is exposed lake bottom (during dry season). The white color might be due to the salt content of the water in the lake (the salt having deposited as the lake water evaporated).

Lake in Crater

Ngorongoro Crater.

This is a high zoom setting photo of the lake area, taken from the crater rim. Here it is clear that the lake is mostly dry this time of year. If you look closely, there is a road just above the horizontal centerline of the photo and vehicle is on that road. I imagine that is about where our jeep was when the grazing hippo photo and the other lake photo from the crater floor were taken.

Crater Floor Views From Rim

Ngorongoro Crater.

Several cloud shadows in this photo.

The rest of this day, after lunch, we had pretty much free to enjoy the lodge, catch up on e-mail, etc. This particualr lodge had pretty good wi-fi reception down in the bar, if I recall correctly.

I also amused myself by taking photos of currency of both countries. They had nice engravings of animals on some bills. Thought it might be best not to include photos of currency here.
