They apparently rent out the grounds for various kinds of events. The tents were there temporarily for something planned for later that day.

There is a difficult-to-see dark range of hills immediately above the center of the photo (just above the treeline). This is a range of "mountains" whose name is the Swahili word for knuckles. These are mentioned near the beginning of her book, Out of Africa, when she describes her home in Kenya.
