Information About This Gallery

These are photos from what was primarily a photo safari trip to Kenya and Tanzania in October 2012. The trip was an escorted small group tour, arranged by Vantage Deluxe Travel. A day-by-day description of the trip appears in the Writing section of this web site.

The photos have been divided into three galleries. There are six albums in each gallery, with each album approximately corresponding to one day.

The two cameras used on this trip have built-in clocks and (during most of this trip) were set to place the date and time in the lower right-hand corner of each image. The clocks were set on US Eastern time (probably both of them to daylight savings time). They were not adjusted for the local time in Kenya and Tanzania (which do not employ daylight savings time -- since these countries are both near the equator, there is little change in the number of hours of daylight throughout the year).

As best I can tell, the times on the images are 8 hours “behind” the local time in Kenya and Tanzania. Thus a time on a photo of (say) 0300 (3 AM) corresponds to 11 AM local time (in East Africa). Also, when a photo lists a time of (say) 2300 on 16 October, that corresponds to a local time (in East Africa) of 0700 (7 AM) on 17 October (the next day). Photos are generally placed in an album for the day they were taken, not the date shown on the image (with certain exceptions, noted below).

Many of these photos have been cropped or both rotated slightly and cropped. This was sometimes done to (1) highlight (or “focus in”) some aspect of the photo (usually an animal or group of animals) or (2) omit distracting details (that is, to make the photo less “busy” – and, hopefully, to improve it). In many cases, the original image contained a horizon line (or something similar) that indicated (or suggested) the camera was not held precisely horizontal. In several cases the image was rotated to make the horizon nearly horizontal (or a vertical element, such as a tree or a giraffe, vertical). The photo was then cropped to remove the now-slanted edges of the images. East Africa contains a lot of horizons.

In several places the appearance of a date/time line which is not parallel to the edges of the image “gives away” that I used this rotate-and-crop technique. Also, the cropping process removed the date/time information from the visible image in many cases (but it should still be attached to the digital image, and visible in the Details view, or if you open the photo on your computer using other types of software).

In a few instances, both cropped and uncropped versions of the same image are included (where the cropped versions is intended to provide a “close up” of a certain portion of the image)

The photos are given in approximately chronological order. In a few places I adjusted the image order or sequence to put related shots together. For example, shots showing the interiors of a specific lodge have generally been placed together (to, hopefully, better “tell the story”) even if the photos were taken several hours apart (or even on different days). I suspect some photos may be out of sequence because I just plain goofed: there were a lot of photos and the differences in dates (due to time zone differences) kept confusing me as I was selecting, arranging, and annotating the photos on this site.

The general Introduction to photos on this web site describes the features of the gallery software I used to assemble these particular photos (including some of the idiosyncrasies of that software, such as how the album name does not seem to appear on most of the “page” formats).

A brief description of each day of the trip follows. As indicated above, each album roughly corresponds to a single day.
