Elephants and Hyenas
I'm going to use this caption for several photos taken around the same place and the same time. Both types of animals were near one another in this place, but only one type or the other shows up in most of these photos.
Hyenas are supposed to be ferocious, but we did not see any kills (or attempted kills) -- by any predator animal. Generally when we DID see hyena (or lion or chetah or jackel) near other animals, they predator and potential prey kept a pretty close watch on one another. These elephants were an exception -- they seemed to ignore they hyenas. I suspect, however, that if I had looked closely, the elephant mothers probably arranged things so they were between the hyenas and the baby elephants.

Snowcap.
I called this a snowcap, but it might be a glacier. After returning home, I found some information (maps and annotated aerial photos) for this mountain. However, I've not been able to firmly connect in my mind what is shown in these photos to that information. There apparenlty are two things labled "glacier fields" on the southwest and south side of the mountain (this highest peak or summit of the mountain). I believe from Amboseli, we were viewing the mountain from roughly north northwest. This view may include those glacier fields, but I'm not certain.
I'm also confused about sun angles. In the US (well into the northern hemisphere), snow and ice most likely to collect (and stay into summer, or year-around) on the north sides of mountains. Here, (slightly) in the southern hemisphere, and near the equator, I have no idea.
Also, I'm not sure "seasons" here are really the same thing as in the temperate zones (well away from the equator). They seemed to refer to dry season and wet season moreso than (aay) summer and winter. They seemed to have at least two wet seasons -- one with long-duration rains (like a monsoon) and one with short-duration rains.

Potential Lion Food
Usually when a lion was around, the potential prey animals tried to keep an eye on it. This wildebeest did not. Later heard their vision is not great and they (the wildebeests) rely more on their sense of smell.
One driver guide said the lions cannot catch a running gazelle, and they usually don't even try, It is the chetahs who eat gazelles.

Lion is not in this photo, but it is in the seqence I took while we were following the line. Most of these animals seemed aware the lion was around. They kept an eye on it, rather than trying to move away. I suspect if one had started to run, that might trigger a chase reaction in the lion.
I said they "kept and eye" on the lion. That may not be the case for the wildebeests. I heard later their eyesight is not good. They sense predators largely by smell -- and by reacting to other animals near them. If the other guys move away, the wildebeests move away too, even if they don't smell danger.

I like these cases where I could get several different kinds of animals in the same photo.
Note the pattern on the side of the wildebeest. Sometimes these stripes were visible and sometimes not. I'm not sure if the stripes are more pronounced on some of them, or it is the view angle (that is, if the stripes are more easlily visible from certain angles -- and maybe it also depends on the sun angle and how the animal is standing).

This is the first of four photos taken by others. This one (and the next two) show the complex arrangement of nested volcanic craters at the summit of the highest peak or cone (i suspect the largest of these should probably be called a caldera, rather than a crater).

This photo was taken by Kyle Mijlof from an airplane. The date is uncertain, but it appears to have been posted on his web site in March 2012: (http://kylemijlof.blogspot.co.uk/2012/03/blog-post.html : accessed 28 Jan 2013). The original blog post containing this photo seems to have been modified in June 2012 to incorporate a second version of the photo.
These last three photos all seem to me to indicate more snow on the sides of the mountain than in October 2012, when I visited. However, it may be difficult to judge what the snow cover on the side of a mountain would look like from a photo taken from above. Also, it is possible the various faces (sides) of the mountain may get different amounts of snow.
My understanding is that to go to the summit is a hike (but not an easy hike). It is not a “technical climb” that requires experience using ropes, ice axes, etc. Apparently the only way it is possible to hike on the mountain is with an organized party (guide, porters, etc.). The trip to the summit (and back) takes 7-10 days (with the longer duration allowing more time for altitude acclimatization). Information on the internet suggests a 7-10-day excursion to the summit would cost roughly the same as the about-3-week trip that I took.

This was probably taken from the opposite of the mountain from when I was. It shows a larger amount of snow cover than when I was there. I'm not sure if this is due to time of year, varying amounts of snow on different sides of the mountian, climate change, year to year variations, or something else (or maybe all of the above).
This photo is from Colin de la Rue’s , “Eight Up” web site: (http://www.eightup.co.uk/eight-climbs/mount-kilimanjaro : accessed 28 Jan 2013). There does not seem to be a date associated with it. This photo is included because it clearly shows more snow on the sides of the mountain than in October 2012. As indicated above, his photo may have been taken from the opposite side of the mountain from the side visible from the two parks in Kenya (I visited several parks in Kenya and Tanzania, but the mountain was visible from only Amboseli and Tsavo West, both in Kenya).
