Kenya and Tanzania -- Oct 2012 -- Part I of III

This was taken thru the window of the moving safari jeep. This is a pretty typical roadside in a small village or community. There was an unpaved setback for perhaps 35 feet from the edge of the pavement (pavement not shown in this photo, but it's off the left hand side of the photo). This setback region was a parking lot, walkway, animal grazing area, space for kiosks (discussed next), and whatever else was needed. There would often be open kisok-type stands, like those shown here, sometimes well-built, often pretty crude. The more permanent buildings (usually commercial) were located beyond the setback area (often behind the kiosks).
