November 24, 2011 – Coptic Christian area of Cairo, including Coptic Museum and synagogue.
This starts a set taken the next day. The original plan had been for several of us to go on an extra-cost excursion to Alexandria. However, a couple places on the tour there (including the library) were closed due to political unrest. It was judged to not be worth traveling that distance given that those two key places were closed.
This day we went to the Coptic Christian area in Cairo, which was also the site of a synagogue. There is no longer a congregation there. My understanding was that most of the Jews who still reside in Egypt are members of two large (and wealthy) families, who mostly live in and around Alexandria. They pay to maintain this synagogue (and may own it).
