Bow or prow of the war canoe. Apparently little is reliably known about the ocean-going canoes that the polynesians used to go between groups of islands -- voyages of perhaps hundreds of miles, or more,but they may have been somewhat more robust than these war canoes. As I understand it, the war canoes were something they might use to go perhaps 15 or 20 miles down the coast to raid a neighboring village. (IMG_4684.SX40.JPG)
