This was the lowest elevation we stayed at (by far). This lodge was built someone other than Serena. It was purchased by Serena a few years back, they remodeled.
As usual, many of these "lodge shots" are shown out of sequence to group the related-topic photos together. That grouping of out of sequence shots also applies to certain other photos taken around the lodge, such as the photos of lizards and of animals visiting the water hole.
Many of these were taken around noon and in the early afternoon in the break between the two game Vantage game drives this day (in the safari jeeps Vantage had contracted for). They offered a mid-day game drive (to make up for the late afternoon game drive missed the previous day, due to the trip by road from Nairobi taking so much longer than planned). Howeve, we turned that down, hanging around the lodge was nicer (and there were probably as many animals visible from the lodge -- those visiting the water hole -- as we would have seen from jeeps, since midday is not when animals are typcially most active). Did do a third game drive on this day, but after dark -- using the hotel's jeeps, not the Vantage jeep.

Another wall map from near the reception area. This one concerned the railroad from Mombassa (on the Indian Ocean), across Kenya, to Uganda between about 1896 and 1902. At the time of the constuction of this railroad, what is now Tanzania was a German colony.
After returning to the US, watched a Michael Douglas movie from around 1996 called "The Ghost and The Darkness." It was about two male man-eating lions that preyed on workers building that railroad (The Ghost was the name given to one of the lions and The Darkness was the name given to the other, while they were both still active). After these lions were killed, their hides were preserved and used as rugs in a home for many years. Later, the hides were sold to the Field Museum in Chicago, where they were mounted and are apparently still on display there.
The lions in this area are a separate species or subspecies where the males have very light manes.
The Tsavo station on the original railroad (shown on this map) was about the ninth station west from Mombassa (on the Indian Ocean coast). The park lodge is below the "T" in Tsavo, about 1/4-th of the way between that "T" and the border with what was then the German colony to the south.

That "Most Recent" Cinder Cone
Viewed from a different elevated viewpoint. We had been partway up this cone in the jeeep in the morning game drive here. Somewhere during this post-trip extension, I got a view where I could see this cinder cone and what appears to be the most recent lava flow were not connected (although that lava flow passed close to this cone). Thus, I suspect there may have been a somewhat more recent eruption that what formed this one. Nice looking cone, well separated from the others.

My memory is that we did not see many elephants in this park (or large numbers of animals of any kind -- except that the water hole by the lodge did OK). I heard there had been a drought here a few years back, and the animal populations were still recovering.
When we were at the elephant orphanage in Nariobi (several days earlier) there had been mention of a lot of poachers (ivory hunters) at one of the Tsavo parks, but I think it was Tsavo East moreso than here at Tsavo West.
