In Transit to Ngorongoro Crater

This was an informal stop at a private residence. This property had apparenlty been owned by one family for several generations. There were three houses on the property that illustrated how construction techniques have changed (and improved) over the last 70-80 years (the time frame may be based on something they told us, or it may be a guess on my part).

This is the oldest of the three houses. It has a sod roof. I think the walls are a mud "plaster" over a "mat" made of tree branches woven together (for my engineer geek friends, it was like reban, but made of tree branches). Apparently, the soil here would dry into a cohesive plaster-like material, so they did not have to use cow dung as a construction material.

The family now lives in a modest "modern" house, which I apparenlty did not photograph.

I believe the write-up for this trip (in a differnt section of the web site) identifies the tribe this family belongs to. It might be something like Iraqw.
